Selective Letters From Ava:

1/1
Happy New Year's! Even as I write fireworks are going off on the grounds and somebody's hosting a party down in the common room. McGonagall wasn't too happy to find that Weasley Wizard Wheezes products were being set off, but I suppose she didn't have the heart to ruin our spirits. Don't worry, if she doesn't, Filch will. Despite the festivities, I thought I'd jot a few things down before heading down to the party. Lest I forget.

Holiday went better than I'd anticipated. Dumbledore invited me to his Christmas feast, and I actually got presents- which was incredibly surprising. Mabel was here too, and as much as her squeaky little voice drives me bonkers, it was nice to have some company, though I never did figure out exactly why she didn't go home. I think it was something about her parents having too much to deal with. The girl's got like eight siblings, I probably would've kicked her out too. In any case, we had a spectacular time visiting around the castle. The Christmas trees here are huge.

This year has been nearly as bland as my first, and I'd say I was glad it's almost over except for the fact that I have absolutely no idea what's going to happen to me over the summer. I suppose I'll just stay here, but Professor Dumbledore hasn't been looking particularly outstanding on the rare occasions that I've seen him. One of these days we're all going to find out that that man is a hundred and eighty six or something. I can't be off by much...

Since Christmas, I've been eagerly trying to decode Professor Slughorn's letter. I think it's a clue as to how I'm supposed to get my box open, but as of yet, I haven't found anything. I wish he'd just tell me. I can tell that Dumbledore has spoken to some of the professors about my father, or at least that they know something about him and won't tell me. I don't get it. Obviously my mother didn't like him, but if my options are between being an orphan and having a father, I'll take the latter. I don't think a person can be that bad. But maybe protecting me from him was mother's dying wish or something... Even still, I'd kill to know who he is. He can't be any worse than mum.

Earlier today Gryffindor won the Quidditch cup! They were playing against Slytherin, but I still can't help but feel excited. This is the house I'm stuck in, after all. It was a good match, and an even better party. The match was rather boring, except for my marveling at the players' ability to stay on a broom for that long, and laughing whenever somebody got hit by a bludger. Quidditch is really a rather comical sport. But great game equals great food, and it seems like everybody in this house knows how to get into the kitchens without causing suspicion. I myself helped out a bit transporting food up to the common room. All in all, I have to say that things have definitely not been as I expected. Gryffindor really isn't that bad.

It's late. Nearly midnight. And something's going on downstairs. But the only thing that matters is I've done it. I've gotten it open. And there's someone I've got to find.
