"Anyways...enough about me," he said with a fake smile, but with a more cheerful tone.
Rafe looked down at her thigh. Inside he was aching. How could someone do something so horrible? He tried to fight through the hurt on his face. "Well, then...that's not so bad." Rafe reached out and lightly traced his fingers over the scar. Rafe thought it looked like a mountain...and a famous one at that and thought brought a smile to his face. "My mom and I liked to travel a lot when I was little, " he said as he began to rub the cream on her thigh, "And I would always beg her to go to Greece and we would. I was always fascinated by the mythology and wanted to live among the gods," he grinned, "So every time I had to climb Mt.Olympus and I always figured they were never home. I never gave up and even though my mom told me it was a fool's errand, I just had to climb that mountain every time." Rafe finished, and then closed the container and handed it to her, "Finished. Keep trying it and if it doesn't work we'll find something else to try and cover it up. Either way, you're still as beautiful as the day I met you."
Rafe then leaned back and waited for her question. He just smiled. He figured it would only be a matter of time before someone brought to Marilyn's attention that he was gone as well. "So you ladies talk about me?" he laughed. "And to answer your question I was summoned, had a duty that sought immediate attention and required my services away from school." He wasn't lying. His duty was to find Marilyn, not out of obligation, but for love.
Marilyn was anxious about him putting the cream on her leg. The intimacy of it did not escape her...but the words he chose to say while doing so...Well, was royally upsetting her.
"Rafe, shut up. Seriously, stop talking like that." She glared at him, thinking he was still as gorgeous as he'd been when they first met.
"It's not all about looks."
Her anger was quickly replaced by embarrassment.
"Yes, I talk about you..." She'd figured his father had summoned him...Knowing so made her think about something else. Things hadn't worked between his father and mother because of the whole wolf thing. Marilyn was naive to think it'd work for her and Rafe.
This only strengthened her resolve. They weren't doing themselves any services thinking they could pretend. The situation was best as it was...
