“What is this about, Black?” Severus asked, remaining standing as always, and looking at him with almost no expression.

Regulus took a breath. “I think you already know that. You’re a Legilamens, and I’m a terrible Occlumens… when it comes to you at least.”

“Only because deep down, you always want me to know,” Snape remarked.

Regulus smiled weakly. “The fact that you know that proves it.”

“Yes.” There was a silence before Severus seemed to realize that Regulus saw no point in saying it aloud. “You’re a fool to even think it. One slip and the Dark Lord will have you.”

“I know.” Regulus’ voice was soft enough to betray his emotions, something that rarely occurred, especially now when he was constantly in such a delicate position. Working ~~with~~ for the Dark Lord was like walking bear-foot on the edge of a knife: even if you managed to not fall off, you still got cut.

Severus could only turn away to hide his fear when Regulus finally said aloud, “He’s wrong. I know it’s selfish to tell you this and hope that you won’t let him know. But I have to say it to someone. He’s wrong.”

“I know.”
