28. Nox

“Nox.” Now, life was only darkness. Each time he closed his eyes, the faces of the dead flashed before him, mixing in to and swirling with the static of light spots behind his eyelids. When he opened his eyes to the pitch blackness of his room, it was no better.

He could hear laughter outside and could picture the small group of friends walking past the house that they could never see. They were most likely muggle, dressed in jeans and t-shirts, their hair messy and their minds innocent, unknowing, completely unaware of their worst enemies lurking around them.

This wasn’t what Regulus wanted. He wanted his people to stop needing to hide. He wanted children to be allowed to defend themselves from muggles who saw what they could do and called them freaks. He didn’t want to kill and to torture.

He didn’t want to feel haunted whenever the lights were put out. He didn’t want to see children crying, mothers screaming, fathers turned white with fear. He didn’t want to know what shocked eyes looked like as their life was stolen. He wanted darkness to become again what it had once been: nothing but blackness, empty of guilt.
