29. Obliviate
Regulus had listened anxiously to screaming all day. His brother and mother had been stepping over each other’s toes, and their arguments were crossing the line between just ignore it and sigh and God, I can’t take it anymore.
“That’s it! I’ve had it, you bloody old hag! I’m leaving!”
“Good! Leave! You are no son of mine.”
Footsteps slammed to Sirius’ room, and Regulus held his breath. He could hear shuffling, scuffing and curses, all different than Sirius’ usual tantrum which often consisted at throwing things at his walls.
Regulus gulped and got off of his bed, closing his door behind him when he stepped into the hallway. He crept nervously toward his brother’s door just as it swung in and Sirius stepped out, wand and rucksack in hand.
“You can come with me,” Sirius said, no doubt one last plea left over from the days at school when Sirius had taken to pulling Regulus aside and talking long about a war Regulus wasn’t sure he understood yet.
“No I can’t.”
As Regulus watched his brother walk out of the door, he wondered if it were possible for him to wipe his own memory. “Obliviate,” he whispered. It wasn’t.
