3. Braking Charm

It was Slytherin v. Gryffindor. The fights in the hallway, the abuse, and the back-stabbing, all of it came to a head on the Quidditch field, the one place where they were allowed to hurt each other. Regulus met his brother’s eyes as their captains shook hands. Sirius twirled his bat and smirked; Regulus swallowed hard, gripping his broom tightly.

The game went smoothly until the second half. At first, Regulus thought he was only having trouble slowing down, and that maybe the braking charm on his broom had worn off. Then, he realized that he could hardly turn. Regulus glared, immediately assuming Sirius, then saw the bludger coming at him. His heart jumped straight into his throat. Eyes shut as he waited for pain, he felt something wooshing past him and heard a crack.

“I don’t believe it! Sirius Black has just hit a bludger away from the Seeker of the Slytherin team! Who happens to be his brother. His team’s not gonna like this!”

Regulus turned to Sirius, seeing James putting away a wand and Sirius screaming at him. Suddenly, Regulus could feel his broom stop fighting him just in time to dive after a glittering, golden ball.
