'Nice to meet you Jonathan, I'm Thea.' ...And a first year. He could probably tell that anyway.. Merh! The girl handed Jonathan a spare quill... really??? As soon as he shook her hand he said "Pleasure Thea and please, you can keep your quill" there was no harm done. "I have spares in my trunk back at the common room" he told her. See? No need to get all panicky about it. It's just a quill after all. Plus, he could certainly buy one at Hogsmeade if ever he doesn't have a spare one.
"I see... Gryffindor" he smiled at her. There has been a lot of first year Gryffindors nowadays, Slytherins too. Jonathan can only imagine the common room filled with first years roaming around and getting themselves lost. "How's school so far?" he can already tell she's a first year. First years usually have their own aura. You can really tell if they are.
