Just after he took the first bite of his sandwich, Ian heard her voice again as she asked him about school. He opened his mouth to answer before he thought about it and all the came out was a muffled, half gagging sort of sound as the bite lodged at the back of his mouth. His face turning what he was sure was an awful shade of red, he grabbed his water, took a large swallow and opened his throat as wide as he could manage to get the bread and meat to slide down to his belly. He felt the lump travel through his chest and took a moment to breath before glancing up quickly and nodded and then looked at the table space between them.
