"The homework will be may submitted to myself anytime before finals week," Hadley explained, before using a duplicating charm for the assignment to appear on the board:

Quote:
* Write a poem (paragram) that has some underlyng theme(s) present related to your house and/or its characteristics/values.

* Remember to use the Pythagorean Number System, as found in chapter two of the textbook, to add up the values of each line. You might need to tweak certain words/grammar in order to get the desired symmetry, but there should be some sort of pattern in the numerical value of each line.
Lame Example:
ALL HOUSES ARE GREAT (70)
PROVIDING YOU WITH FUN (114)
READ A BOOK; DON'T BE LATE (70)
As you can see, the first and third lines have equivalent numerical values. They happen to rhyme too, but that isn't really necessary (more of an added bonus)

* Minimum 6 lines recommended
* Worth 10 points, but opportunity for extra credit points for OUTSTANDING efforts.
* Due by Finals Week, so you have some time to think on this assignment since it will be time consuming and should take some creativity/effort with regards to word usage =)
* Follow all Arithmancy homework submission guidelines found in my announcements thread
Moving toward the door, as she set a basket of peppermints for them to take one (or a couple) on their way out. "Thank you all for an enjoyable lesson and class dismissed." Until next time, at least.

Zara quickly jotted down notes on the homework, and added a few more information. Whew, class was over. That was fast, but fun indeed.

She looked over at a quick scan of her notes, seeing if she had missed anything.

First Year – Gryffindor
Lesson One – Paragram

Number Mysticism ~ began in Ancient Greece hundred of years ago; 6th century BC
Pythagoras ~ he began the number mysticism
***Numbers have power; but do not control events
***Coincidences happen
Mere Coincidence ~ two different events happening that seem to have a connection to each other
***Good example by Head Boy Finlay: “I might have life path number of 1 = life takes me down at road of independence. My life could go that way, but it could be a coincidence and not just because of my life path number.” <<Whew, it was hard to write that one, had to write fast.
Paragram ~play on words (wordplay); imply words to be graceful and is commonly used in literature like in poetry where all lines have same sum
***According to a student: adding numbers would equate to Numerology and Arithmancy
***Studying about coincidences associated with minor art form w/c is not used anymore
Gematria ~ what Ancient Greeks call Arithmancy; where the practice of assigning numbers to letters and words to understand mystical significance

Five Words Synonymous To Me
1. G+R+I+F+F+I+T+H+S
7+9+9+6+6+9+2+8+1=57

2. P+I+A+N+O
7+9+1+5+6=28

3. E+I+R+W+E+N
5+9+9+5+5+5=38

Music is my life; and playing the piano is my passion.
MUSIC ~4+3+1+9+3=20

MY ~ 4+7=11
LIFE ~ 3+9+6+5=23
AND ~ 1+5+4=10
PLAYING ~ 7+3+1+7+9+5+7=39
THE ~ 2+8+5=15
PIANO ~ 7+9+1+5+6=28
IS ~ 9+1=10

PASSION ~ 7+1+1+1+9+6+5=30

20+10+11+23+10+39+15+28+10+11+30

Total: 207

Additional about Paragrams
~ more about symmetry like in poetry (all lines have same sum; same construction of parallel passages)
***This lesson focused on symbolism only.
***Today, practices transferring letters to numbers to discover numerical value of words and sentences

Reminder: Homework #1 ~ Write a poem/paragram.
Theme: Gryffindor/My house
Use Pythagorean Number System (Chapter 2 of textbook)
*Must have pattern in numerical value of each line i.e. 70, 144, 70 or rhyming
*Minimum 6 lines
Due Date ~ Finals Week

'Guess everything's there.' she thought as she rolled the parchment carefully and placed it in her bag along with her inks, quills, and textbook. Another homework coming up, Zara planned to start it today, maybe at the Gryffindor study table. Yesiree.

Grabbing her bag, she stood up and walked to the door and said a quick, "Goodbye, Professor." Zara bowed, like a nod, smiled and walked outside on her way to her next class.
