"Do you have any cats?" she asked curiously, you know while they were on the subject. "Or any other pets?"

Usually you could tell a lot about someone by what they chose as their companions. Then again sometimes those companions just happened to be chosen by well meaning loved ones.

"Yeah," Dal agreed, his eyes widening. He couldn't imagine trying to find a pet that had wandered off in the castle to who-knows-where. He was glad that his family had only let him get an owl, because when he couldn't find his owl, he knew it would always come back. He didn't have worry.

Leaning forward to loosen the laces on his shoes, Dal shook his head. "No cats, my mom's allergic to them. And most dogs, too. I think it's the hair or something." He sat back up, stretching his legs out again and turning his head to look at Ivory. "I do have Barty, though. He's an owl." He was also his first and only pet.

"What about you?" She kind of struck him as a cat person. No idea why.
