Chapter 2: The Dream, The Cat and The Fate
I woke with a start. My face was covered in sweat and I was gasping for breath. I felt someone wrap their arms around me. Seth. I forgot I had snuck him in our house. I couldn't bear to be alone so I had asked him to stay.
"You're safe." He whispered in my ear. I nodded and fell back into him. I could feel his breath on my neck. "I'm going to go home but I'll be back so we can fufill the plan." I nodded again. I felt to numb to speak.
I barely noticed when Seth kissed the top of my head and left the room. I knew I should have said something but I couldn't. The dream felt so real. Maybe a little too real. I shook my head.
I stood from the bed in a daze and walked out onto the balcony. Next thing I knew I felt the sensation of falling. I gasped as I was suddenly jerked back.
"What were you thinking?!" An angry voiced snapped at me. I first thought it was Seth, but then I remebered he had left. Besides I knew this voice. I had been thinking about this voice.
Zane.
I felt his arms around my waist and the rails of the balcony were touching the backs of my legs. I frowned.
Had I tried to jump? I bite back tears. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." I muttered over and over again.
Pulling me over the rail Zane said, "It's okay." His voice had changed. It didn't have the arrogance it had last time, or the anger and worry I had just heard. I couldn't place what it was. "You're safe. I'll always protect you."
I turned to look at him. I stared into his red eyes. I couldn't help but stare. They were so pretty, yet frightning. I lifted my hand to touch him but stopped midway.I stepped back to take a better look at him. Zane was tall. Taller than, well me and Seth. He had dark hair that had a red tinge in the sunlight and his skin was pale and clear.
Like a doll. I thought. I giggled and smiled at him.
Zane raised an eyebrow but said nothing. "Why? Why did you safe me?" I asked.
Zane shrugged, not looking at me. I stared at him until he finally sighed. "Fine, I'll tell you why." He paused. "Do you really wish to know?" I nodded. Another sigh.
Because I love you. I jumped. The words had been spoken in my head. I thought I had imagined it but when I looked at Zane I knew I hadn't.
"W-What? We don't even
know each other! I've only just meet you. You can't love me! It's not possible." I shook my head.
Zane smiled and carefully pulled me towards him. Before I knew it I felt his mouth on mine. My body went ridgid. His kiss was soft and hesitant. I wrapped my arms around his neck and pushed my mouth against his. Part of me was screaming to stop but the other was telling me to just enjoy it. And I was. I didn't want to break away from him which is why I was sad when he pulled away.
I love you, Aimée. More than you could ever know. I was born to protect you. Zane had switched to telepathy.
Protect me? What do I need to be protected from?
He shook his head and mouthed,
Later. "Tell me about your dream, Aimée."
I sighed. I didn't bother asking how he knew what was troubling me. I didn't want to tell him but I felt like I could trust him.
* * * I opened my eyes and glanced around. 'I know this place! This is where me and Cécile used to play.' I smiled. 'There's the lake we fell into. And the tree that caused me to twist my ankle.' I laughed at the memories.
"Hello, sister." That voice. I turned to find my sister. Her blonde hair was in perfect little ringlets and her blue eyes glowed. "I've missed you." She smiled. It was a small sad smile.
"Cécile!" I cried out and ran to hug my sister. I wraped my arms around her thin body and held her close. "You have no idea how much I missed you. Who did this to you? I'll make them pay." I whispered.
She laughed. "Oh Aimée. You've always been so quick to jump to conclusions." I stared at her and she blinked. There were tears in her eyes. "Come. I'll tell you everything you need to know." She took my hand and lead me towards the lake.
"Aimée. There are things that I'm about to say that may not make sense so please wait to ask questions. Can you do that?" I nodded and she continued, "As you know the Luna's are a very old line of Pureblood witches and wizards. At some point in time one of us is always the youngest. I have been the youngest for 14 years now." She sighed.
"You always said you wished to be the youngest, but sister, I would never have wished this fate onto you." I looked at her bewildered. But she ignored me and continued. "Anyway. The youngest always is given a speacial power or ablility, if you prefer. Mine was to be able to the future. At first I only saw good things but as I got older my power grew and I was able to see farther. Since I was 4 I've been able to see my death. I didn't tell anyone because I wanted to be strong. Mother and Father told me my ability was a gift. They said I should love my gift and be strong.
"I did love my gift because it did keep you safe. I was able to know when something bad was about to happen to you. I could stop it and keep you from harm. But sometimes...Sometimes I wasn't able too. I allowed you to fall of that horse that one day. I knew he could have killed you but I didn't try to stop it." Tears flowed down her face.
I put my arm around her and smiled. "It's okay. It was my fault that the horse threw me off." I quickly told my sister how I had been poking the horse before I had rode him. The horse had become agitated and threw me off.
She nodded when I asked her to continue. "The day I died I knew when and where. I knew but I still went. I wanted to see him one last time and I couldn't help it. I love him so much, Aimée. I hope he knows that." She looked around sadly. "Aimée, you are now the youngest. You are by far the strongest in awhile. You have greater powers than anyone of our ancestors. Learn to use your powers and end the curse. But be warned there are people that wish to hunt us and kill us." She began to fade.
"No wait! Don't leave! Not yet. I'm not ready." Tears rolled down my face.
"I woke up after that." I said simply. Zane nodded. "Is that what you mean't by you had to protect me? You mean you are going to protect me from
them?" Another nod. "Why?" A shrug. "Tell me."
He sighed. "Fine. My fate is to protect you. The only reason I was born was so that I could protect you. Your sister had a protector but once she died he died too."
I snorted. I couldn't believe him. It seemed to far fetched to believe. "So...basically I'm the reason you were born and your like my slave, right?" I smiled.
"No. It's nothing like that. I could reject my mission and not protect you but..." His eyes looked over me. I flushed inspite of myself. "You seem to be interesting and I did tell you I loved you." He grinned.
I rolled my eyes and slapped him. "Where do we go from here?" I asked
He shrugged. "We run. We hide. Anything to get distance between you and them."
Before I knew it my fate had been decided.
