The fact that the crup seemed to find himself an accepted part of the situation, made Jared smile faintly.
Her comment made the faint smile turn into an almost wry one, however. "Because there are no robes left to chew on, after that?" He asked, both amused and quite aware that she hadn't meant that, by her remark. Then she spoke again, and he had to ask, tones a feigned thoughtful, "I don't see how the kitten is the poor party, here -" He was the one looking after it. Her. "But I suppose that means you don't count said kitten as a dangerous creature?" The most dangerous thing that could happen because of the kitten was his desk being used as a scratching-post - provided, of course, that the presence of the feline did not give other people the idea that his office welcomed all kinds of creatures - and he could handle that, though his intonation seemed to tell a different story altogether.
Now that the crup had scrambled into his owner's lap, Jared adjusted his position, back against the parapet, feet resting on the floor so that his knees were comfortably bent. It was an informal, casual sort of posture, not unlike hers in that respect. "I don't doubt that," he said, at her confirmation that her ownership of the crup was legal, but the amused look in his eyes seemed to say he did. Once again, the teasing had seeped back into the conversation. Then he said, more seriously, "You do realize you'll have to keep a stricter watch on him than you might have, under normal circumstances?" If Bowie ran into the wrong - or right, depending upon one's thinking - kind of person, she could land into trouble. Renée hadn't missed the fact Bowie seemed to have distracted Jared from yet another teasing comment regarding their original interchange. About, well, she wasn't exactly sure she remembered at this point, but the amusement was still there. Not to mention the fact she remembered it all had to do with her cruppy anyhow, so it all circled back quite well.
The topic of his newly-acquired kitten was another source of amusement, and she grinned at his wry, intentional misinterpretation of her meaning. "Either that, or the kitten just grows out of chewing things she's not supposed to," she replied with a shrug, unaware her random choice of pronoun was accurate. "Bowie went through a chewing phase." She'd just managed to keep her important things high enough to avoid said chewing. She raised an eyebrow mischievously as he continued to speak, interpreting his faux-thoughfulness much too easily, however. "You can handle yourself with dangerous creatures," she pointed out with a smile, inferring that the kitten could not, "and no. I don't generally consider kittens dangerous." Beyond the adorableness, but then she had her own dangerously adorable pet. It all balanced out, and he'd seemed to handle the cruppy rather easily. There was definitely a fear behind his words, though, and that intrigued her.
Her own fear of his opinion of her regarding the newly discovered fact of Bowie not having had his tail cropped had supplanted that intrigue for a while, but as he settled into a sitting position of his own, echoing her own in a vague fashion, she found herself watching him again. Bowie wriggled around to look back toward him as well, but stayed in his mistress' lap for the time being. Until she felt another smile creeping onto her face at his renewed teasing, and the cruppy crept off her lap and slowly back toward Jared, as if he knew things weren't quite as tense anymore. "Oh really," she said, teasing tone creeping back into her voice for a moment before she continued. "Thank you." It was simple, but said a lot more than it seemed. She didn't ignore his advice, either, even though it wasn't entirely necessary. "I usually do. And I only let the charm fall if I know there's no risk of people seeing," she replied. She was smarter than that, and she was completely aware of the dangers. It didn't change her resolve against what she'd seen as animal cruelty, but she always tried to keep herself safe. Well, until now, but she still hoped Jared was on her side.
