I do not claim to own the wizarding world of Harry Potter. J.K. Rowling is the brilliant creater of that. I only own the plot and the character.

What Doesn't Kill You, Makes you Stronger

Chapter 1:

Ellie Hilder had her ash black hair scraped back into a tight ponytail and was waiting impatiently for the kettle to boil. Really. What was the point of waiting for a kettle to boil when you could use magic? But apparently, there isn't a spell for that. Ellie had her mug ready, the tea bag hanging onto the edge of the white cup, and the milk was out and the two spoons – never one more, never one less – of sugar was sitting at the bottom of the mug. A high pitched whistle and steam curled up from the spout of the kettle.

Ellie jumped up and poured. She poured some milk in and put it back in the silver fridge. She sipped her drink. And she walked around the modern apartment and stopped to look at herself in the mirror. She never thought she was gorgeous but she knew she was a bit pretty. Ellie's family was Asian but had moved to England before Ellie was born. She had hazelnut shaped eyes and melted chocolate-coloured irises.

Ellie moved away and finished her tea. It was queit. Too quiet. Then suddenly music killed that. The volume was so loud that the mirror shook. It took a moment – well more, because Ellie dropped her mug of boiling hot tea, spilling it all over herself and now, there was a shattered mug on the floor – for Ellie's ear to adjust and figure out what song was bursting her ear drums. 'What the Hell' by Avril Lavigne.

Ellie loved that song, but really – it was so LOUD, she walked (around the shattered mug) to her best friend/roomate's room and hammered on the door. No answer. The girl inside probably didn't hear. She flung open the door and stormed in. Brianna Tempten was dancing around the room, holding to outfits infront of her and looking at herself in the mirror. It took her a while to realize that Ellie was in the room. “TURN. IT. OFF. NOOOOWW!” Ellie boomed shoving her fingers into her ears. Brianna turned off her stereo and gave an innocent look in Ellie's direction.

Ellie knew she was nothing compared to Brianna. Brianna had shoulder length blond hair and bright blue eyes. Her lips were almost like they were scuplted or something they were so perfect. It was like she was a vamp (it still was there era of vampires now). And a super gorgeous vamp at that.

“Why are you running around your room, looking at different outfits like a...” Ellie struggled for a word. “Whatever, but why?” Brianna took Ellie by her hands and spun her round the room. “I got my letter!” Ellie gasped and hugged her friend.

Now adays, since wizarding population has dropped awfully because of the Legendary Battle of Harry Potter and You-Know-Who ten years ago, the Minsitry has been match making. After you turn seventeen, you get a letter. A picture and bio of your future spouse and when you'll meet them. You don't have to marry them right away, but after a month, you have to move in with them (but of a bummer in Ellie's opinion, you barely know the person!).

Brianna looked ready to burst into tears. Ellie didn't know if she was happy or sad. She quickly caught the oppurtunity to stop the tears. “You were picking out the outfit you'll wear for the meeting, right?” Nod. “Is he good-looking?” Another nod. “Brianna, you okay?” Brianna couldn't stop the tears. She sobbed into her friend's chest. “Bri? What's up?” Her only answer was a friend shaking so hard with sobs that her hair was going all whack.

“I don't wanna leave you, Ellie.” Brianna looked up and whiped her eyes. “Heeey. Don't worry, okay? I'll visit whenever I can and we'll see eachother at work.” Brianna nodded and sighed, then grinned. “Now, let me show you the hunk I'm going to marry!” she squealed.

TWO DAYS LATER!

Ellie was waiting at the apartment's window for her mail. Brianna was still asleep – she had met her guy the night before and returned at 4 a.m. Ellie was practically jittery waiting for the details. She pulled out her wand and made a couple of ice blue butterflies.

Then, a black dot came flying towards her and she flung open the window. The owl zoomed in and dropped two letters with the Ministry stamp on it. He landed on the window sill and pecked her. “You're only getting food if one of these is my pay check!” She opened the heavier one. Yup, pay check. She grinned and gave the owl the popcorn kettles from the popcorn she had been pigging out on the night before waiting for Brianna.

The owl ate them and flew off. Ellie finished off the apple juice in her glass. She put the glass down and opened the second letter. OHMYMERLIN. It was THE letter. Ellie grinned in excitement and then it faded. She picked up her glass and then flung it across the room. It broke. Ellie liked that sound. Then she stared at the name again.

Adam Leroy.

She knew him.

And she hated him.

And she would meet him in three days. In the Leaky Cauldron.
