All he could see was a small, hooded figure and had no clue who it was until he heard Jake whisper out...

Kurumi? Now why was she crying?

He frowned, deciding to try to speak with the young Gryffindor after class. He shifted his eyes back to front to try to figure out where the lesson was currently at. Ok something about families and crunching numbers. Someone said Families Suck. Well heck Salander agrees 101%.

So apparently they need to code their family names and get the meanings. Simple enough he mused as he began to scribble earnestly on his parchment

Book description: ELEVEN (11/2): You inherit the ability to uplift, encourage, and inspire others. Your family name brings with it a sensitivity to others and the desire for spiritual living. You will learn from life through many tests that illuminate certain universal truths.

Interpretation: I supposed some of the book description is true. I do try to make people feel better specially when they're down in the dumps or they dont feel up to it. I know what its like to feel that way and to not have anybody to talk to or to even console me so I try my best to keep them from experiencing what I did, even if all I do is to just listen to them talk (which happens most of the time cuz I really have no clue how to fix their problems anyway. Lucky most of them never ask, otherwise I think they'd be worse off than they first started, just sayin).

I dunno about that part with the spiritual living-- I will admit I'm not particularly religious, maybe my dad-- who I inherited this name from; certainly not my mom, although the term "biblical sense" is some kind of a cruel joke about her from the rags that I never particularly liked to say the least. Then again my mom has stopped carrying my dad's name since I was 5 so maybe she dont really need to be that spiritual you know?

Uhm.... I dunno about the universal truths part. Heck I'm just having a hard time figuring out if someone is lying to me or not you know what I'm saying? So yeah, not sure about that last part either.

He dropped the quill back onto his parchment, leaned back into his seat and resumed staring at the lovely blonde locks that bobs from time to time in front of him.

Continuing her circling around the classroom, Professor Hadley nearly missed Salander, as he was writing so dutifully. Backtracking to him a bit, she smiled as she skimmed over his work. "Yes, you've got the right idea," And at least you're not conceited about the master number bit. "Except that spiritual living doesn't have to pertain to religiousness. It could simply be about believing. And who doesn't want to believe? In something? Even just a little..." Chew on that one for a little while, eh?

"I'm not sure how exactly to word this, but my brother Henry, the Ravenclaw who graduated last term; he's a very...accomplished Legimilens. That basically means he can read people's mind. Legimilency is another branch of magic, one they don't normally teach here, and one most people never master any part of. Not as if it's necessary such as Charms, though, so that's perfectly all right. Anyway, he's started teaching me somewhat, and every once in a while, he'll sort of..put his own thoughts into my head, and I'm sort of able to do the same, since he'll read my thoughts. He knows how difficult our family situation is for me, and he watches out for me. He's basically my father, even though he's my brother and he's only six years older than I am. So, a lot of the time when I seem spaced out, I'm not daydreaming, I'm talking to my brother. In my head. Sometimes I am just daydreaming, though."
She giggled then looked at Jaina inquisitively.
"Do you understand, somewhat?"

Charley smiled at the compliment.
"Thank you, Professor Hadley!"

Nice to meet you!" she whispered excitedly. She was grinning ear to ear!

Just as she was about to move onto another Slytherin's parchment, she overhead bits of the conversation two first years were having and frowned, creases forming subtly on her forehead. "Um sorry to interrupt, but Miss Kelley?" Fina paused, trying to search for the right words. "Could you perhaps visit my office after the lesson? Not a bad thing, just a concern..." She reassured the young Ravenclaw. "You could bring Miss Maloney too, if you like"

BIOLOGICAL FAMILY
PROS:
- They are almost always an owl away
- They love you and look after you
- They are protective and side with you
- They help you out when times are tough, and try to stick together
- No matter how different, there is always something that bonds them together.

CONS:
- They can't always be there with you
- Disagreeing on something and not being able to just stop being near them for a bit to cool down

FAMILY OF FRIENDS AND ROLE MODELS/ADOPTED FAMILIES
PROS:
- You choose them
- There are boundaries, not always with them like you're biological family.
- If they are you're adoptive or chosen family, then you msut admire them for something.
- If they adopted you then they have to care for you, otherwise why would they have chosen you?

CONS:
- Sometimes there can be jealousy's in the group or family over someone not truly belonging, or being new.

She frowned looking at it. She didn't really have many ideas to put on it, but still tried.

Oooo, adventure! Calculation? K-Lee was frowning within seconds of looking happy. She had forgotten that it was Arithmancy and that involved actual math and work. She didn't have any idea on what to do, so sat quietly.

K-Lee worked on how interpreting her families name. Writing it down, she referred to the textbook to see exactly how it was done.

K-Lee thought about it. It sort of fit her family, in a way. Though she didn't know what some of it meant. She went on with the task, poising her quill on the parchment again.

She had nothing. She sat for a few minutes, just trying to think.

Quote:
My father is all for if you have the knowledge and ability you have the responsibility to do things, I suppose that makes sense with the responsibilty/duty part of things. Family focus also. As a family, we stick together. My twin brothers Reed and Royce, and my sister Pearl keep the family balanced. Reed and Royce loud and outrageous comparing to Pearl's quiet attitude.
That worked for K-Lee. It seemed to cover all she could understand.

"Dear... Make sure you look at the interpretation for number six according to chapter 27. Not simply general characteristics about the number six." She paused, turning the girls' book to the appropriate page. "Similar, but you'll see there that you inherit the conservative attitude about helping others because it's responsible. Stubborn streak, yes, very Slytherin..." Heh.

SEVEN (7): You inherit a desire for knowledge, you value learning, and you respect quality, facts, and theories, as well as a need for spiritual understanding. Your family traits will be those of observation, analysis, perfectionism, and the desire for privacy.
Blink.

More blinking.

Well, that explains their need to keep Gilderoy in the dark.

SPOILER!!: Interpretation
Accuracy is not that important, but books have been rather important in my family, whether one reads them or writes them. So, I suppose those traits are bound to be found in those that value learning, somehow. They do tend to go quiet about their own accomplishments, with one single exception. Privacy, then, is something the Lockharts do treasure.

I actually believe that no matter how certain some facts may seem, one also needs to open their minds a bit and try to see all sides of things. One will never know everything, not even if that something interests you very much.

A little interpretation for sure, because his mind was entirely unfocused thinking many things. Involving the family, that is. Especially the last bit. He ought to learn from it, certainly.

But dedicating to research was something he very much loved. No problem in figuring stuff out, then.

"Yes... yes... very nice Treyen! And you didn't think you had the aptitude for Arithmancy..." Hadley mused, smiling at him. "You've got all the right ideas down though about your family name number. And Lockhart too... Very famous name." In other words, high expectations for you, young boy.

Kurumi did raise her head a bit when she felt someone touching her arm and she looked up to see the concerned expression of Professor Hadley looking down at her. "S-S-Sorry for interrupting class, P-P-Professor," Kurumi said bowing her head in apology and drying her eyes with the sleeve of her robe. Taking a quick peak around, Kurumi saw that there were several other students with concerned faces and she quickly turned her gaze back to her parchment where they remained on a single word: lies. "I'm...just having some family issues at the moment and...calculating my family number is a bit overwhelming..."

She adjusted her arm so that her second calculation was covered, but it was probably too late to keep those numbers from Professor Hadley's sharp gaze.

Oh dear ... Kurumi's quietness and blubbering was making Hadley want to TEAR UP! Drawing a deep breath to keep her cool as best as possible, she gave the second year a comforting smile. "No... No dear... Just... it's harder on some people I guess than others."

She noticed the girl adjusting her arm to cover up the parchment. "We don't have to talk about your family number unless you want to. When you're ready, you let me know." Pause. Awkward. Hadley bit her lower lip cautiously, before proceeding. "If you'd like to leave... if it's making you that uncomfortable, you can leave. I won't take it personally and it's with my permission. But if you do stay, then I think you'll find most of the personal family discussions are nearing its finish." Because while some of them might have personal connections to their destination, it wouldn't be like this. No, it would be more positive... hopefully.

Mother: teacher, very organised, driven by power-money and success, she has a great focus on education and has high expectations and high standards of achievment. She is strict, and has an ego.
"Oh that's my mother all right", she muttered to herself. No matter how hard she tried or how well she did at school, she was never good enough for her mother.... never.

"Very nice. You know, even though it was never your family name, you might also see some common themes in your own life represented by your mother's family name." Fina nodded at the Ravenclaw girl, approvingly. Might was the keyword though.

Hmm...get anywhere in life? Of course she wanted to get somewhere in life. She nodded once to the professor before turning back to her parchment.

Okay, so maybe self-discipline isn't such a bad thing after all. Sometimes it pays to think before you act and figure out what would be best for you in the long run.

So now her parchment read:

...but hard work isn't really the only way to work. For example, if someone does something for you, then you really didn't have to do any of the work yourself--they did all your work for you. Now I do think Greingoth's--well, some of us--have been known to be cautious. For example, seeing other people smiling makes me think they're up to something. This is one of the main reasons I'm so leery of Hufflepuffs some people. Thoroughness sounds pretty accurate for my family. After all, when we set a goal to accomplish something, we always see it through to the very end. I'd say we're very ambitious people. Self-discipline? Psh. I'll just pretend like that one's not even there.

Okay, so maybe self-discipline isn't such a bad thing after all. Sometimes it pays to think before you act and figure out what would be best for you in the long run.

Conclusion: I don't know if I might like the number four...

Passing by Sierra's desk again, she smiled as the girl seemed to make some slight adjustments in her interpretation. It would be interesting to see how her brother would interpret their last name... perhaps next year he'll opt to take Arithmancy class.

BAM!

Who cared that gravity didn't actually suck.

"Nobody... NOBODY has an ideal family situation. I mean, come on. I'm on my third or fourth surname, and I've had a bunch of foster families. The number of which is bigger than a hippogriff's hindquarters. AND even when you're set, that can still go wrong. My parents split, so where does that put me? Confusions, man. Just stick with the friends as a family. Too bad there's no surname for that."

NEXT TIME... Jake was gonna go with a totally made up surname.

"Just sayin'."

Somehow, despite Jake's attempts to cheer up the situation, Professor Hadley wasn't finding his words all that comforting. It didn't change the fact that ideal family situations didn't exist except in the Hudson household. Or that Kurumi was still bothered by something.

But he was write on one thing. "Yes... Gravity. Good metaphor. Because gravity does suck in keeping us down on Earth and grounded..." Hmm... possibilities here. "Much like families do. Or at least have the potential to do."

Maybe. Yes Jake. You were onto something. Just not what you thought.

Yep, pritty much.
Then, she thought about what the teacher had said. Well she really cared for her friends, so she was family-oriented in that way.

She sat twirling her quill again, while people worked. Might as well work out her adoptive name then.
She sighed and started to write again.

Her mouth dropped open a little. That was... exactly her. She'd only been with her family for a year so she didn't think they'd influenced her that much.

Quote:
My adoptive family has probably influenced me more than I thought. Now that I think about it, they encouraged my love of reading and obsession to learn. They always noticed when something was wrong with me (observation) and unlike my biological family thought about things before they did them and gave me the privacy I needed.
She sighed and started to twirl her quill again. She couldn't wait to see them again in the holidays. Sigh.

Striding by another Emily's desk again as she heard a thank you, Professor Hadley couldn't help but notice something in common between the two Emily's. Despite the differing houses they were both overachievers in calculating another family name. "Very nice. You know though that you shouldn't be so shocked by the influence your adoptive family has on you. The family name number, as mentioned before uncovers truths in your surname, whether this be your birth name, adopted name, or eventually your married name. It reveals information about traits of that family, which if you recall about families, are passed down to you. Whether you realize it or not."
