"For those of you who have been to my office, you might have seen these photographs I brought with me today. They are indeed, my family. There is a lot of changes happening in the wizarding world, much of your views about the world, your beliefs might be influenced by your family. Your backgrounds. I'm not here to change that, but I am here to remind you to keep an open mind. Remember that while you love your family, they might not always be right. You have to do what is right and develop your own ideas and beliefs.

So before I go further... What is family? Who are they? What does it mean to you as a person? To who you will become?"

On the one side of the paper, make a list of pros and cons of Biological families. On the other side, do the same for your other family, made up of your friends and role models.

Feel free to discuss your lists with your peers and we'll continue shortly."

Sierra raised her hand into the air...

...and then quickly brought it back down. She was about to share her opinion on what a 'family' was, but then the professor moved on and directed the lesson to completing some activity in their notebooks.

Well, blah. Sierra had been about to suggest that a family could be biological, or it could be the people who care for you, care what happens to you, and are there by your side through thick and thin (whether they're biological or not). She'd just jot all that down on her paper, though.

As she pulled out her notebook and a quill, she briefly wondered what in the name of Merlin this had to do with Arithmancy. What were they going to do--calculate the number of people who might be considered family in some way or another?

She set up the charts on her paper and then began writing.

Biological Families

Pros
* You might inherit their good genes (looks, health, etc.).
* They care for you and care what happens to you.

Cons
* You might inherit their bad genes (looks, heath, etc.)

Other Families

Pros
* These people came into your life because they chose to be there, not because they had to be there.
* They care for you and care what happens to you.

Cons
* Because they don't have to be in your life, they may leave you for good if something bad (argument, divorce, etc.) ever happens.

Sierra put down her quill and studied her paper. There were a lot of things that overlapped, and there was also a lot of things that contradicted other things. Who knew family could be so confusing...
