Because, really, Amadeus couldn't actually be speaking to her to make sure she was ready for the game... Maybe he was talking in code. MAYBE "Just making sure you're ready for the game, love," really meant "I am a spy sent to spy on you and steal all your quidditch plays!"
Maybe.
Or perhaps he was just here to irritate her. That was certainly the way it seemed to the Hufflepuff Captain. "Good to know." she answered dully, letting her tensed shoulders relax and her raised eyebrows fall. He clearly just wanted an argument, right? Like one of her little cousins, when he got bored and she wouldn't make him any muffins? Meh. "I think both sides would like to win... And only time will tell who embarrasses-" Cue air quotes. "-who on the pitch. I wouldn't talk too much until you've faced us." she replied evenly, tapping her fingers on her book with a note of impatience.
Er... "And it's Melanie, by the way." she added, with a small smile. Not "love."
Amadeus sensed the atmosphere change as the badger girl seemed to forcibly relax. Or maybe she had given up? Not likely. Playing nice was almost a foreign strategy to the Ravenclaw, one that he wasn't quite comfortable or versed in using with those that weren't close friends and family. Thus, he was momentarily puzzled. Collecting himself, he attempted to relax as well, his eyebrows becoming unknitted as he leaned back in his armchair, arms resting on either side of him comfortably.
As she spoke, Deus took note of her words. Although she tried to play it off, her ever-tapping fingers on the cover of her textbook made it known that he was not necessarily a welcome presence. Excellent. "Oh, trust me," He began, shaking his head and grinning ever so slightly, "I've seen the way you play. Gryffindor took quite a beating during that last match." Custom dictated that he should have laughed mockingly, but he refrained; Braeden and Riley would be quite hurt if they caught word that he was verbally denigrating their noble house... even though their quidditch team definitely was not the best Hogwarts had to offer.
"Lovely to make your acquaintance," He nodded, never allowing his mockery of a smile to falter. "I'm Amadeus... Kipling." In typical, gentlemanly fashion, he introduced himself in the full, proper manner. Although pretty little Melanie was technically the enemy, she was still a lady and manners dictated that, at least for the most part, she should be treated as such. "If you don't mind my asking, what brings you to the library at such a late hour?" And just like that, the conversation had gone from combative to conversational. For now, at least.
