But then she started to feel wobbly, like she was going to fall over any second now - and she had a feeling she would. Flailing a little, she quickly grasped Kita's shoulder to steady herself. It was in that moment that she caught a glimpse behind her, and she had to blink several times to make sure she wasn't seeing things.
The tail of her peacock costume - which no longer looked like only a costume - looked about half the size it was just a minute ago, maybe even smaller than half. Was THIS why she felt so off-balance now? "Singer?" Vashti repeated as the song changed, still holding on to Kita's shoulder. "Oh no, I'm not. That hardly qualifies as singing anyway really." Kita was in a bit of a shock. In a way, she had always wanted a superpower and having amazing hearing could be seen as one but she felt anything but 'super'. Right now, with the many sounds she could hear making her head hurt and the way she was still wobbling, she felt helpless.
A sudden grasp made Kita look around at Vashti, who was also wobbling. Definitely not a good sign. If both of them were wobbling, it would be a wonder if they made it through this race. "What-" she started but then Professor Saylen's words entered her already packed head again. Vashti must have had a severed limb. "You ok?" she asked.
Kita squeezed her eyes shut as Vashti spoke. Except it didn't sound like she was speaking normally, it sounded like she had a megaphone pointed directly towards Kita and was practically yelling. The throbbing in her head got worse. Even though her only ear (or hole in the head) was on her left side, it still felt as if Vashti's words were reverberating inside of her. "It sounded like singing to me," she said, smiling despite her pain.
