"The galdr can not carve the wood on its own. The galdr is the incantation element of a spell, the other two elements, wand movement and intent are comparable to the shape and form of the rune, and of course the focus you need to carve. However, without a wand, you still need a tool to use to actually do the risting."
From a cupboard under the chalkboard, Truebridge withdrew a box containing enough burins for the entire class.
"These are engraving tools, a type of cold chisel that works fairly well for carving runes, particularly in wood. They're called Burins. Each burin has been charmed so that it will only carve wood, and therefore they are perfectly safe to use, and you need not worry about cutting your skin by accident. Naturally you will all still wear the gloves and goggles provided." Because Truebridge did not want another probation. No thank you. And already this class had proved themselves well able to injure themselves and others regardless of safety precautions.
"You will need to use the burin, and chant the galdr for the rune you are carving. You don't need to be exact about the galdr either, as you will see in your textbooks, chapter seven."
He placed the box on his desk at the front of the room.
"Come and get a burin and try it out on your test pieces of wood. If you need another piece of wood you can get one of those too." He placed a stack by the burins just in case. "When you think you have the hang of it and are ready to carve runes directly into the table, put your hand up and I will check your work and answer any questions you might have." Jake did as he was told and flicked his hand in order to drop his wand back into its holster. Yup. 'Cause he was obedient.
Ruff ruff.
"Cold chisel?" the young man repeated. Why cold? Or was that just... a worrrrrd. Meh.
When it was time, Jake got up and went to get a burin, sifting through the box to find the best one, even though they were all pretty much the same. He already had his gloves and stuff on... now for the carving.
Jake shook his hands and arms to loosen his muscles in his arms and shoulders slightly, before picking up the burin again and getting started.
It was hard work. HARD.
Mostly because of the effort, but some of those 'words' were ridonkulous.
"dagaz dagaz dagaz
dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh
d d d a a a g g g a a a z z z
du da di de do
dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh
odh edh idh adh udh
od ed ud ad ud
d d d a a a g g g a a a z z z"
Uhm... that looked nothing like the bow-tie shape thing that dagaz was... it was more of an umbrella under attack by the wind.
So... he tried again, really REALLY focusing on what he was doing and what he wanted from the runes. A breakthrough of sorts. This time, when Jake wiped the teeeeeeeny beads of sweat from his brow, he was a little more pleased. He had a wonky bow-tie going on... but the young man was starting to get tired. May as well ask to table carve before he got too tired and stuff.
Raising his hand, Jake looked to Truebridge. "I think I'm ready to carve into the table. And... did you use this method of the other to carve these runes? Assuming it was you..." Because he hadn't seen them in here before.
