"Some of you mentioned the 'runic alphabet'. While I don't mind this term, and on occasion may use it myself, it is worth noting that it is not an entirely correct term. While it is reasonable to compare a rune to a letter, strictly speaking runes are not an alphabet. Alphabet is a term for the latin based alphabet which we use, 'A B C.." and so forth, based on the names of the first two letters in Latin, Alpha and Beta. The equivalent term for the Runes we will be focusing this term on is 'futhark' and for much the same reason. The first six runes make up the name 'futhark.'"

The book in front of you is an introductory book only." Truebridge continued. "It summarises and introduces but that is all. The intent is to provide direction for your future research, and indeed for your homework assignments. This textbook is simply a guide, it is up to you to find a path, just like Runes themselves indicate the changing journey and not the final destination. You may of course use any textbooks you like as reference, but do be sure to credit your sources."

He looked around. "So for today, I suggest we skip the 'boring' stuff - you can do that for homework." Ethan Truebridge of course, never found anything truly boring, but his mind was rather different to most. "Instead we're going to make magic." He waited for the class to absorb that.

ooc: please read the Code of Conduct and refresh yourselves on the rules. Points losses will happen if there are more after this point

I'm working on the next post now... running out of words in this one.

As for everyone else.

"I know that some of the concepts are hard to get your mind around. But we'll begin now by opening our books to chapter five." He waited for the books to open and then continued.

"The twenty four runes of the Elder Futhark are listed here, along with a few magical and divinatory meanings associated with each one. The tables you are sitting at are each made of wood and I think are rather bare. So today we're going to choose runes to carve into the tables, based on the magical associations of each rune, and activate the magic of each one, hopefully to provide beneficial effects on your learning."

Yes. They'd be carving up the furniture.

"So take a look at the list. What kind of runes do you think would be good to carve into a desk that you do schoolwork on? What kind of effects would you think might be beneficial? Put your hand up if you can see one here, and do feel free to think outside the box, there is a lot of opportunity for that. You're welcome to say a rune someone else has said, but do try to share a different magical association to that rune as well as why you think it'd be
useful."

ooc: be creative, go ahead and say as many runes as you want, as long as your character can say why they think it'd be beneficial to be on a school desk/table.

Salander started to raise his head to nod then stopped, instead tilting his head. "Mooncalf dung and chocolates...that'd work really?" He paused then added "Is that because they got the same color?"

He had to ask.....

And he winced at the second part a bit. Everybody tells him 'be nice to the Whomping Willow'. Nobody says 'be nice to Salander'. Preferential treatment thats what it was. And this Slytherin lad aint givin' it nuthin'.

The next thing the Professor says pushed all the dung-like chocolate out of his head because they were gonna be carving up the furniture! Perhaps for the first time ever Salander eagerly opened up a book and looked into the Runes list. They should seem familiar to the him now, but after a few seconds his eyes glazed over and the runes and the words started to just mix together. He looked back up at the Professor and raised his hand "Uhrmm.... The Tiwaz rune..... because it looks like an arrow pointing up and thats kinda where I want my grades to go."

Not to mention its heck easy to carve an arrow. he does it all the time
