Self-preservation... it sounded ridiculously difficult to recognise, let alone master.
And what Truebridge just said made less sense that ever, and Jake smiled as he 'explained' why. "Not right means it's wrong. And something wrong is always a bad thing."
That's what Jake had been brought up to believe in the first place. "Always."
Meanwhile, Jake hadn't noticed it but his anger and frustration was abating ever so slightly as he spoke and listened.
"It'll only make more sense with time, and with thought. As Diogenes said, 'As a matter of self-preservation, a man needs good friends or ardent enemies, for the former instruct him and the latter take him to task.'"
Kazimeriz had been both of those things to Ethan Truebridge.
Zan smiled.
"Exactly." And he wasn't about to delve to deeply into that. Truebridge was under no delusions that society, or more specifically, government in the Wizarding World was 'right'. Someone coming from the ministry now, and someone who, to Ethan, did not really smell like ministry, only underscored his thoughts on the matter. |
