When Isolde was still a recently tenured professor at Oxford, a biologist friend of hers summoned her to Transylvania to help identify some blood samples that were unrecognizable according to the current animal record. While there, she met and fell passionately in love with Raoul, completely unwitting of his less-than-human nature. The two of them spent several months together in Romania, and cultivated a happy relationship. Isolde adored the unidentifiable wildness that seemed to define Raoul, and he found unexpected happiness in her sense of adventure and mischief. He also found relief in the fact that his affair with her was secret, and he implored her to keep it so.
Despite his (necessary) monthly absences, the relationship went along normally for the two of them until Raoul realized that the blood Isolde had been spending so much time studying was Vampire blood. Thinking the worst of her, he accused Isolde of allying herself with the Vampires he fought against and would not listen to her as she attempted to defend herself; incidentally, it also came out that he was a full-blood Werewolf. She was completely taken aback by the news, unaware of the existence of such creatures of magic (but suspecting it), and became fearful of him. So, she decided to return to England, and told Raoul that she wanted nothing more to do with him. At the time, neither of them realized that she was pregnant.
Derian was born in January, in Kent, to an embittered Isolde. She had desperately loved Raoul, and was still hurt by what he had done and what he had concealed. So, at Derian’s birth, she vowed to raise the boy on her own and to tell him the truth about what he was and what his father had done. As a symbol of her vow, she gave her son Raoul’s last name; it would serve as a constant reminder of Raoul’s betrayal.
For six years, Derian knew only that his father had hurt his mother in the worst way possible, and he became angry at the man. Then, on his seventh birthday, Raoul paid Isolde a visit. It came out that Raoul had only learned of his son’s existence in passing from a clan member, and he came to try and become involved in his son’s life. Confused and angry, Derian made it clear what he thought of his father and that he wanted nothing to do with him—and Isolde agreed.
So, Raoul left and promised that he would not return; but he still is protective of his son, and has asked Rafe Lycaon, Derian’s half-brother,to look after him.

The background:
Derian grew up knowing he was half-werewolf. So, his monthly moodiness was never cause for too much worry. Then, when his eleventh birthday coincided with a full moon, his “condition” took a marked change for the worse. Up until this change, Derian had no qualms with eating cooked meat; but on the evening of his birthday, he refused the chicken his mother cooked for him and, instead, snuck out to kill and eat an unsuspecting farmer’s flock of chickens raw. This new development in his appetite had Derian paranoid for the safety of every farm animal in a 10-mile radius, and he sat his mother down to talk about his options.
He decided that, hatred of the man aside, he needed to go and seek the help of his father because Raoul was the only person he knew that could help him. His mother reluctantly agreed to this after realizing that she could do nothing to help, and decided to write Raoul a strongly worded letter explaining the situation to him and what role he could play in its resolution.
So armed, Derian boarded a flight to Romania, and was looking for his father’s clan the next day. He eventually found the clan grounds, and was coldly received there: the resident werewolves did not like discovering another half-lycan in their midst, much less the fact that his mother was only human. Undaunted, however, Derian sought out his father and gave him Isolde’s letter. He was only there for a couple of hours when he met Rafe, whom he discovered to be his half-brother. The two struck a tentative acquaintance, thus making Derian willing to stay and learn more about his “condition,” but his acceptance letter to Hogwarts interrupted all of that.
He called his mother, telling her his plans to come back to England to begin the school term at this new school he had never heard of, but he left any mention of Rafe out figuring that his mother couldn’t handle any more abrupt news relating to his father’s side of the family. Before he left, he made plans to meet with Rafe to get into a place called Diagon Alley.
His current plan is to go back to Romania over the summer.
