Default Transfiguration Lesson II

There may have been a lot of strange goings on inside the castle as of late, but Hogwarts was first and foremostly still a place of education and Professor Darlington was certainly not about to let anyone get off lightly. Especially considering that today’s lesson had been scheduled for right after lunchtime so no excuses. She hoped everyone had eaten plenty of brain food.

It’s back to basics for this lesson, and the classroom was set out in the traditional way. The only addition were the items that she had neatly placed on each individual desk: a glass goblet, a bread roll (not for eating, you’ve already had lunch!) and an old copy of the Daily Prophet.

While waiting for the students to file in, Joyce sat at her desk and busied herself with the marking of some assignments. Probably not wise because some of the more ridiculous answers were enough to put a dampener on her mood.
OOC: Welcome everyone! Come on in and take a seat! Class has started! You can still jump in, just act like your kiddo was here the whole time. Or not. It's up to you, if you don't mind a bit of IC trouble! ;]

not throwing away my shot | Slytherpuff | roll for initiative | woof you ❤

Indigo wasn't too upset with the result of his first attempt. No, it wasn't perfect, but it wasn't too bad. Better than some others. He was ready to move on to try the spell on the other items. He looked between the other two items, trying to decide which one he was going to try it on next. He decided on the glass goblet and consulted his notes for the proper incantation for that one. Prima Forma Sabulo. And if he did it right, the glass would turn into sand.

He really concentrated this time. He was focusing on the end result, on the sand. He was going to turn this into a pile of sand. Still concentrating, he raised his wand and made a counter clockwise circle in the air, ending with a point at the goblet. "Prima Forma Sabulo." And then, on his desk next to the wheat-like stuff and the daily prophet, was a pile of sand. Indigo grinned to himself at his success.

curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

Maaaaybe Nettie would do better with something...not wheat like. Maybe she'd do better with the paper? Pushing the gross pile of mush that she'd conjured to the side, she instead focused on her Daily Prophet paper. She did the counter clockwise circle and then pointed her wand, muttering "Prima Forma Sabulo!" and watched.

Slowly, the paper started to break down, until it was a pile of shavings on her desk. Sand looking shavings. Not QUITE sand colored - they were still a bit more paper colored, with a few black specks in there, but MUCH improved over her other attempt with the roll!

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy was thrilled that her spellwork was producing the intended results and that Professor Darlington was satisfied with her work.

She was now ready to revert the bread roll and old copy of the Daily Prophet back. She pulled the newspaper towards her and then as she moved her wand in an anti-clockwise circular motion, and pointed at the newspaper as she firmly said, "Prima Forma Sylva!" Soon the newspaper had turned back into wood and she carefully moved it with her hand next to the small pile of sand but without touching.

Finally, it was time for the bread roll. "Prima Forma Siligo!" Daisy said as she motioned her wand in an anti-clockwise circle, followed by pointing at the bread roll. Maybe it was her confidence showing through because the bakery item turned into wheat in the quickest time.

She smiled a satisfied smile to herself and awaited further instruction.

Tina positively beamed at the professor's words. She was relieved to know her first attempt at reversion wasn't too terrible, despite her sand being off color. Feeling a bit more confident, she looked at the two remaining items on her desk. Which should she try next?

She felt she'd be able to visualize wood better than wheat, so she decided to go with the paper. “Prima Forma Sylva,” she said to herself. “Prima Forma Sylva.” Practicing the incantation was a lot easier this time, since it was only modifying one word of the one she already practiced. Wand in hand, she turned to the newspaper on her desk and tried to visualize wood in its place. Then she thought of something. What form of wood was she supposed to visualize? A plank of lumber? Pile of wood chips?

Tina bit her lower lip, lost in thought. Professor Darlington had said reversion turns the item back into its natural form, which she interpreted to mean its most basic, untreated form. That was it! Tina envisioned a small section of a log, bark still intact, not unlike the logs used for firewood. Focusing intently on that image, she made the anticlockwise circle and point movement and said, “Prima Forma Sylva.”

A small log sat on the desk in the exact spot where the Daily Prophet used to be, just as Tina had envisioned. It was almost as if the log had jumped out of her mind and into the world. She smiled a little, feeling pleased with her work, but there wasn't time to rest on her laurels. She still had one more object left to transfigure, and it was the one she felt least confident about! This was going to be a lot harder to visualize! Tina knew what wheat looked like of course, but she'd only ever seen it in books… and in that documentary about bread making she had to watch with her class when she was still in maternelle (nursery school). Was the fact that she'd never seen wheat in real life going to affect her results?

Tina took a deep calming breath and gathered her thoughts. In the meantime, she could practice the incantation. “Prima Forma Siligo,” she muttered. “Prima Forma Siligo.” She couldn't help but notice that all three versions of the incantation ended with an S word. That had to be confusing!

Tina did a couple more repetitions of the incantation… not so much because she needed the extra practice but because she was scared to try the spell and wanted to put it off as long as possible. What if it didn't work and she embarrassed herself in front of everyone? Deciding she could put it off no longer, she turned her attention to the roll on her desk and thought back to that documentary she saw. She recalled golden-yellow wheat sheaves swaying in the breeze and concentrated on that image as hard as she could. “Prima Forma Siligo!”

Before her eyes, the roll morphed into a small pile of wheat. The sheaves looked exactly like Tina remembered, but had she remembered correctly? Were they too small? Too large? Wrong shape or color? She hoped they would do!

"No problem," she said quietly back to Dorian. It was only too unfortunate that Professor Darlington had noticed he didn't have his quill.

Hanna really hadn't thought about the items on the desks until that very moment. Glass, bread, and paper. Of course they would be transfiguring them back to their natural form. It was going to be very interesting to see them back into their original form, even though she had seen it before. She'd seen sand, wheat, and wood, of course, but she'd never untransfigured things as she saw them, back to what they initially were.

"Prima Forma," she said under her breath, as she carefully wrote down what Professor Darlington had on the board. She stood up and began practicing by saying the first incantation, and practicing the wand movement. "Prima Forma Sabulo, Prima Forma Sabulo, Prima Forma Sabulo," she said, forming the words in her mouth. With her wand in hand, and her mouth closed, she practiced the anti-clockwise circular motion, with point at the object.

She saw Dorian's goblet start to disintegrate from the corner of her eye, and looked over. A grin was just about plastered on her face when the goblet stopped turning into sand. "Nice," she said, anyway. And it was good! First time and some of it turned to sand. It took a lot of concentration from Hanna to perform any transfigurative spell.

Looking to the goblet in front of her, Hanna used her mind to see it turn to sand. She pictured the sand, white and powdery as the pile on Professor Darlington's table. "Prima Forma Sabulo," she said, whilst moving her wand in an anti-clockwise circular motion. She ended it with a point to the goblet, where it remained a goblet.

Not to worry, though. "Prima Forma Sabulo," she said again, moving her wand in the same way. Again, it remained glass. She closed her eyes, this time, with the very vivid picture of the goblet in her mind. Slowly it turned to sand, and a neat pile remained. "Prima Forma Sabulo," she said, her eyes now open and moving her wand. A slow falling of sand from the top of her goblet, moving to the bottom.

The practicing seemed to be going well enough. Those who hadn’t been quite as successful the first go around were definitely making improvements. Granted, their spell work still wasn’t completely perfect but she wasn’t expecting miracles.

“That’s quite enough practicing,” she announced to the class, “some of you could certainly do with more, but I’m afraid we must move on. Hopefully, your skills will be adequate enough to see you through the next activity I have planned.” Hopefully.

“I’d like you all to follow me into the practice room next door, please.” They needed more space for the next section. “You can leave your belongings here, all you’ll need are your wands.” She promptly led the way the short walk down the corridor, but even walking there was still ample opportunity for more learning and she had a question of course. “Tell me, what other objects could we use this spell on? And what would the end result be?”

OOC: ^___^ Thanks for sticking around, peeps. We’re coming up to the main activity, but first question 2! 24 hours as usual!

Hanna had just started her practice on the bread, when it was time to move on. She would just have to come back and practice those other two spells until she got it right. Leaving her things as they were, and keeping her wand in hand, Hanna followed Professor Darlington and the others through to the practice room.

"We could turn our uniforms back into the fibres around cotton seeds." Not whilst they were on, of course. She was also not sure what variation to the spell it would be, either. "Maybe Prima Forma Sylva would work. If it turns paper back to wood, it might turn clothing made of cotton back into the fibre."

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

After a lot of failed attempts in which he had only managed to transfigure half of the objects he had finally managed to reverse the newspaper back in to a piece of wood a minute or so before the Professor called out for them to stop.

With a small victoriousl smile on his face, the teenager was halfway of sitting back down on his chair when they were told to follow. As he walked, he held back a yawn which caused his eyes to water. Blinking a couple of times, he had heared the question but nothing came to mind at the moment so he decided to stay quiet for now.

Daisy left the classroom carrying just her wand as she followed Professor Darlington and the other students to the practice room. She wasn't fully sure of an answer as she raised her hand, tentatively. "I've got a question, Professor. If you use possibly Prima Forma Sylva on an item made of silk will it revert back to silk fibres or will it revert back to a silkworm since silk comes from silkworms?"

Tina had only just sat down after finishing her practice when Professor Darlington called time and said they were moving to the practice room. Apparently she wasn't getting a chance to sit down today…. She supposed she shouldn't be surprised. This was Darlington they were talking about, after all!

Tina grabbed her wand and followed the others to the practice room. She had to admit her curiosity was piqued. What were they going to do that couldn't be done in the classroom? Suddenly a scary thought occurred to her. What if she needed her notes? All she had with her was her wand, as the professor instructed. What if there was new information she needed to take down? What if she forgot the three incantations she'd already learned and didn't have her notes to remind her? The thought of making mistake after mistake in front of the whole class had her internally panicking! That's not going to happen, Tina reminded herself sternly. Even without her notes, she was pretty good at memorizing incantations. She took a deep breath and willed herself to focus on Professor Darlington's question. The first thing that came to mind was turning cloth into cotton fibers, but Hanna had already said that. She needed to come up with a new answer and fast!

The next object that Tina thought of was a chocolate frog - she had no idea why. She wasn't a big junk food eater! The more she thought about it, she imagined reverting a chocolate frog would be quite a bit like reverting the roll… or would it? A chocolate frog was made of several different components. Would it be possible to isolate one of them to revert it? Then again, the roll was made of other components besides wheat, and they were able to revert that. By that logic, it made sense that they could revert a chocolate frog into cocoa beans. She raised her hand. “What about a chocolate frog, Professor?” she said. “Perhaps there's a version of Prima Forma that could turn a chocolate frog into cocoa beans?” That answer sounded okay in her head, but now that she'd spoken, it seemed ridiculous!

"Yes, that is indeed one use of the spell," Joyce said in agreement. "That particular incantation wouldn't work as its for wooden objects only, but a slight amendment and it is possible to turn fabrics back into their original material."

SPOILER!!: Mr Katharos

She was going to have to keep an eye on Mr Katharos, wasn't she? First the forgotten quill and now he looked like he could do with a nap. Well, not on her watch. He'd need to be vigilant for the next task...

She welcomed questions. It meant her students were curious and eager to learn. And it was a good question too. "This type of transfiguration only works to revert objects back into their original materials and in your example, that would be silk fibres."

And another good answer from, Miss Dantes. She definitely had the right idea. "Quite right, use a form of this spell on any kind of chocolate and you'll end up with the original beans."

No attempt to answer from young Miss Awning, but that was quite alright. As long as she was paying attention and it seemed she was.

But enough with the questions for now.

Much of the space inside the practice room had been meticulously set up into what is very clearly a giant maze. This maze wasn't one of the cutesy ones made from hedges that were common at summer fates, however. She had made the walls from concrete... they were seven foot tall and foreboding. And of course, no maze was complete without obstacles and this one had its fair share of those. "Time to put your knowledge into practice now, children. Your task for the remainder of the lesson is to successfully make your way to the center of the maze." And she hadn't made it easy. She wasn't about to reveal any further secrets however... the rest was down to them. "You won't be alone inside the maze and if you find yourself getting too overwhelmed, please shoot red stars from your wand." She expected as much from a few of them, but hopefully, the majority would be just fine.

"You have thirty minutes starting now, get to it!"

Hopefully none of them were smart enough to figure out the incantation for turning concrete back into its original form..

OOC: Woop! Onto the main activity! Have your charries enter the maze! We've got about 3 days for this activity and I'll be posting hints and obstacles along the way!

Finally done with the questions. Wasn't the maze a bit much? And with obstacles? Was there gonna be a sphinx with a riddle? She knew red sparks so well. But thirty minutes? If the concrete was giving her issues, she'd just cast Innervate on it.

Oh dear, oh dear...

She was really lost, she had tried the practice run and wasn't successful, but how were you successful when you didn't fully understand. It seemed the others were getting it pretty easy and she looked toward Derf for some help, but soon they were moving on and Chloe honestly felt like she might be sick. She was working so hard to be good at everything and doing so well this term, but this, this was hard and she wasn't sure she was ready for an activity.

Maybe she could just sit and watch?

Getting up she had headed to the practice room with everyone else and quietly stayed hidden the best she could. Observing might help her learn more, so she figured maybe she'd be able to just watch the others.

A MAZE?

Nope, nope, she didn't know the spell well enough to jump right into something like this. Could she put the sparks up now? While everyone else headed in she stood there just looking at it.

Daisy had learnt over the years to just try her very best when it came to challenges. She didn't want to send red sparks right away so she entered the maze, hoping that the obstacles that Professor Darlington had prepared weren't too difficult.

A maze?

Dorian stood there, looking up at the concrete walls while he listened to the professor. Did he like it? No. Especially when she said that there were obstacles. But he had been through so much over the years, possession, deadly inferi, insane professors and not to long ago he had gotten away from those pink mutants who were eating the Ravenclaw Dormitories. So this maze thing here? HA! He could do that....if only his feet wanted to work with him. It seemed that he wasnt the only one who was hesitant to enter as he saw Chloe hanging back. Should he give her encouraging words? What good would that do though? Maybe she just wasn't confident enough with the spell so words of encouragement did not help at all.

Debating on what to do for a moment, Dorian soon grabbed his wand from out of his sleeve and walked to the entrance. It wasnt that he did not want to help the Ravenclaw but....ok he didn't want to. He was nervous about this maze enough and keeping track of someone else?

Taking a deep breath, he entered the maze.

Nope, nope, she didn't know the spell well enough to jump right into something like this. Could she put the sparks up now? While everyone else headed in she stood there just looking at it.

Joyce was trying to remain patient, she really was, but some of the students present needed a little more backbone. Chloe McCarthy included. Why did she look so terrified? This was Hogwarts, surely she’d experienced far worse. “Whatever is in there, Miss McCarthy, I assure you it can’t do you any harm.” Although her words were supposed to be soothing, her tone definitely wasn’t. “Now come on, you’ve already wasted a few precious minutes.”

This particular maze doesn’t have any riddles but there is plenty more to keep you busy. You have no choice but to keep walking forward but…….. Is that something in the distance coming towards you?

Do you turn back to try and find an alternate route? Or will you keep going forward to see what awaits?

It’s quiet inside the maze. Quiet and gloomy. Hopefully you don’t lose your head because in here, you’ll need to have your wits about you. Starting NOW!

As you turn the next corner, a flurry of charmed paper airplanes immediately make their way for you like a swarm of angry bees.

There’s no need to be nervous…… or is there?

Keep heading straight on, and eventually you will be in the position where you have to make a decision.

The pathway to the left appears clear but is dark and ominous. The pathway to the right is blocked. Step closer and you’ll realise it’s been blocked by YOU. Or a mirror’s image of you anyway.

Will you choose to go left? Or will you choose to go right?

Daisy had her wand at the ready as she turned the next corner. She was nearly overwhelmed by the mass of paper planes. The Hufflepuff moved her wand in an anti-clockwise circular motion and pointed at the papery objects as she firmly said, "Prima Forma Sylva!" Where to go next? Right, maybe?

Indigo was a bit distracted as he entered the maze. His mind was preoccupied with thoughts of the spell they had just learned, and other possible varieties of it. He was no expert on latin but he was sure that some simple research would show that the endings of the prima forma spell were just latin words for the original product, like sand, wheat, and wood. That meant that to give the spell other uses all the user would have to do would be to find out the latin word for other products. The concrete walls, for example. What even was concrete made out of? He was pretty sure it was just rocks. If that was true, then he'd be able to revert the wall to a pile of rocks if he knew what the latin word for rock was. He found it all very interesting.

He was moving forward through the maze and had his wand in his hand as these thoughts swirled through his mind. He was sure that if something did jump out at him he'd snap back to reality.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

His wand at the ready in case something tried to attack him right away, the Ravenclaw moved forward slowly. Both because he wanted to be careful and also because he was nervous.

He was tall and if he could have he would have cheated by looking over the walls but they were too high so he had no choice but to walk forward. Until he arrived at a dead end.

He looked left, at the darkness that awaited him and then right. That path was lit but something ..or rather someone was blocking it. Someone who was wearing a school robe. Holding his wand on eye level, he stepped closer and closer until he realised that it wasn't one of his classmates ...but himself.

NOPE!

Without any other thought, Dorian turned around on his heels and walked back swiftly. He'd choose the dark looking path over his own image any day. Unless it had just been a mirror? Oh merlins beard what if it just had been a mirror?! "Lumos" he said as he entered the darkness because he didn't want to take that chance. An image of himself in a maze, mirror or not was way too freaky.

The paper planes transformed into a sprinkling of sawdust which rained down on the Hufflepuff perpetrator.

.............. is it just your imagination, or is it getting darker in here?

Which way are you going to choose to go now?

Jump out on him? Not this obstacle.

There was something creeping up on the Ravenclaw boy though. Quiet steps.

Creep. Creep. Creep.

Turn around and you'll find an animated, glass suit of armour following you silently and sinisterly. Waiting for the perfect moment to make its move....

Oh, so rather than face the mirror you've opted for the more difficult route.

Enjoy a challenge, do you?

Raise your wand high enough and you'll see there's something in the distance coming towards you. It's large and it's rolling......?

Do you go back to the mirror? Or will you take on this obstacle instead?

Daisy's hair was now covered in sawdust which looked as if she had dandruff so she used a simple spell to clean herself up. She then noticed that her surroundings were getting darker. "Lumos," she cast as she made a left turn.

Transfiguration was not one of Ronan's best subjects. It wasn't even one of his okay subjects. Ronan Wallace was actually pretty terrible at Transfiguration. Either that, or his wand just hated transfiguring stuff and that seemed unlikely right? They wouldn't have made a wand that didn't want to transfigure?

Regardless, he struggled with this class as much as he had since he got here in September. To Ronan, the move from the classroom setting was a welcome one, since mazes sounded much better than trying to make sand appear instead of a solid glass goblet. And he might have nibbled on the bread roll. Just because they'd had lunch right before this class didn't mean he didn't want it.. it's food. Ronan will always eat food if it's available.

So, in slightly better spirits, the twelve year old stepped inside the maze and immediately felt a chill. It might be better than transfiguration, but it sure was a bit scary. Wand clutched rather useless in his hand, Ronan debated taking off at a sprint and just always choosing to go right. He'd end up somewhere at some point right? And he was fast, he could outrun whatever was in here. ... Was there anything in here? He hoped not. This was Transfiguration, not Defense!

Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Tina was relieved to know her answer to the question had been correct, but she didn't have much time to congratulate herself about it before they moved on to the next activity. A maze... okay, that explained the move to the practice room. She studied the high concrete walls with a quizzical expression. Those walls looked ominous, but she was more curious about the maze than nervous about it. What obstacles lay inside? Would they be able to get around them by reverting them into sand, wood, or wheat? Or were they going to have to guess the incantations to revert other materials?

Either way, Tina wasn't too worried about it. After the earlier practice, she felt a bit more confident in her reversion skills, and she rusted Professor Darlington not to put anything in the maze that would actually harm them. Wand in hand, she stepped into the maze about the same time as her classmates. She continued straight ahead, keeping an eye out for obstacles. Her strategy was to keep walking in a straight line until the path she was on forked, dead-ended, or was blocked by an obstacle. The less she changed directions, the less chance she had of getting lost!

Keep moving forward and you'll realise your pathway is blocked.

It's blocked by a number of giant, dangerous looking glass spikes which are protruding out of the floor. There's no way of clambering over them unless you want to risk being impaled.....

The flurry of paper airplanes had multiplied in size and found a new Hufflepuff target. A smaller Hufflepuff target this time.

They hummed menacingly as they whizzed through the air and tried to get at the boy's head.

Jab, jab, jab.

Looks like you've gotten off to a lucky start..... But looks can be deceiving.

The pathway ahead might look clear, but it isn't.

Hopefully, you're not walking too fast because you might end up with a squashed nose and sore head as up ahead and blocking the pathway is a plain, clear glass window.
