Early as it may be (and it is, indeed, quite early, a sad truth for the late risers) Professor Ichihara is standing as poised as ever (it would never be guessed from her appearance that the Professor had been up all night) before her desk, waiting patiently for her students to file in. As usual, the classroom is immaculately clean with everything settled into it’s own proper place and, as usual, the Professor expects it to stay that way. Excuses for tardiness, stray bits of parchment, passed notes, gum chewing and any disruptions will not be tolerated.
Tapestries have been hung about the class, each with a different motif. Those keen enough to mind them will notice a recurring theme, one that holds a clue to today’s lesson.
The Blackboard behind the professor simply reads:
Quote:
An unfamiliar familiar.
Take your seats, get comfortable. Class will begin shortly.
OOC: hello, Welcome to Transfiguration! As we are now in November IC this would not be your character’s first time in Transfiguration. Have them grab a seat and jump right in.
Also, before jumping in, I suggest reading the class rules and also SS’ rules.
Chloe's focus was going in and out. She noticed people around her already beginning to have some kind of progress while she was doing none of that. She must have repeated the incantation under her breath at least fifty times. But that was all she had managed to do. Everyone else was far more interesting than her lopsided snowman.
She glared at her snowman as if it would compel it to do something. Do anything.
But she had to do the incantation for real for it to work.
No time like the present.
She played with her wand and then pointed it at the cruddy snowman. It was go time. She flicked her wand in the proper pattern and then said with a certain level of feigned confidence, "Piertotum Locomotor Annexus."
AND AFTER A WHOLE LONG SPECTACULAR MOMENT. Nothing happened.

He gave his wand a nonchalant point and flourish, although the practice for such simple movements wasn't really necessary for Dima. The intent part was going to be the most troubling in this activity— he could tell. No way the evil kneazle, real or not real, was letting him off easy.
Imagining some 'life force' junk spilling out of his heart and blood and magically whooshing into the clay figurine to give it life, Dmitriy pointed and flourished at it again. C'mon, Zeusy. Come through for the sake of your ol' man's grade. "Piertotum Locomotor Annexus."
.... nothing.
......... solid nothing.
That was all kneazles were good for, apparently.

After that disappointment Chloe didn't want to do this project anymore. She knew that maybe part of the reason why this was so hard was because she was a second year (magic took time) but her feelings were hurt. And so all she wanted to do was to be bitter. Which she was really quite skilled at, actually.
The twelve year old blew some hair out of her eyes in frustration.
She side eyed the snowman with the lopsided, drawn-on smile and asked, "What are you looking at? You have a dumb smile." The snowman did.
And this spell was dumber than the snowman's smile.
The small Slytherin kept repeating the spell, doing his best to get the pronunciation correct. It took him quite a few tries, but he finally managed to get it all the way right, and he ran through it half a dozen times more just to make sure. Spells were hard. He much preferred plants and potions. The small boy picked up his wand again, and set himself to trying the movement that went with it.
This part was much easier to do. He liked waving his wand around, no matter how he was meant to do it. Swishes and flicks, specific patterns, all sorts of things. It was much easier than having to say stuff. Jay repeated the motion a few times, humming happily to himself, before he looked at his little clay Niffler. He could put it all together now... and he'd have a fun little friend.
"I can't wait to play with you," he whispered to it, patting it on the head before pointing his wand at it. He could do this... he could DO it. Point, flourish, and... "Piertotum Locomotor Annexus!"
...nothing happened. Nothing happened and Jaemin was extremely upset about it almost immediately. NO GLOWING. No moving. Nothing exciting at all. Why couldn't he do this?! He just wanted to be good at it... The boy sighed and put his chin on his desk, staring at the still clay Niffler blankly. Why couldn't he get the spells on the first try? Other people got to do it!! Very gently, he poked his Niffler's extended nose with his wand.
"One more time?" he mumbled to the squishy creature. "You better move this time, okay? You really have to..."
He pointed his wand at it again, and with the flourish, and all the focus and hope in the world, softly spoke the spell. "Piertotum Locomotor Annexus."
...did it turn blue? Jaemin's eyes went wide and he blinked rapidly at it for a moment; it went back to its normal colour so quickly that he wasn't quite sure. He held up a finger, just away from its nose, but not touching it. "Move?"
...
ITS NOSE TOUCHED HIS FINGER!!!! Jaemin immediately lit up, though his glowing did not fade like the familiar's had. "I did it!"

Bastien had been sitting in the center of the class wishing that he his fruit bat with him now. It was the perfect lesson for her to attend with him! Too bad she wasn't allowed. The third year, instead of taking proper notes, poorly sketched images of his pet while the students.... acted like students. What information he deemed useless got replaced with sketches of fruit bats. Needless to say there were a lot of bats on his parchment by the end of all the discussion.
When they finally got around to talking about the activity he focused more on the professor, drumming his fingers along his desk. Tears, hair, spit, and clay molding. Got it.
He jumped up and retrieved his clay then bound back to his seat. The boy wasn't the crying type, so he couldn't give tears. But what if he gave hair and spit? Two weak elements combined would equal out to a semi-powerful one, right? Right. He hocked a loogie into the clay and then yanked out a strand of hair.
There.
Now time for clay molding.

Piertotum Locomotor Annexus.
It several more tries before Olivia was satisfied with the way she herself was pronouncing the three-word incantation. She could see it working as a tongue twister and couldn’t imaging it not being a struggle if she had a bit of a brogue like her grandfather. Now she was ready to move onto the wand movement and getting it just right. She was doing her best to put the best foot forward when she put it all together, especially seeing as she already dealing with her wand.
Learning magic was hard enough.
Olivia took out her wand and looked back to the notes on movement. Point and flourish. That in and of itself seemed simple enough. Point and flourish…point and flourish. The Ravenclaw following through with the two-step movement over and over again as she thought on the words. Point and flourish… Piertotum Locomotor Annexus. Point and flourish… Piertotum Locomotor Annexus. Now all she had to do was put it all together and speak aloud. She was nowhere near qualified to do wordless magic.
But even vocalizing could be easier said than done.
“Okay Mr. Cat…shall we try this?” she absently mused to her clay figure as she readied herself for trying it out. A deep breath or two, a gathering of her focus. “Piertotum Locomotor Annexus!” Olivia finally cast, pointing at the clay cat with her wand before giving the required swish. No soft blue light like the professor had got. “Swish you tail,” she tentatively ordered.

Idly considering the amount of chin and ear scratches he would withhold from the dumb kneazle when Zeus came rubbing up to his legs in the common room, Dima gave the little mold a stare down. This... was not going to work by emitting disgruntled thoughts at an inanimate object, would it? Or forcibly cast spells or faked intentions. He was getting nowhere, and it was quite obvious.
He mulled over the prospect in question rather than thinking about the creature, eyes still glued to it. Why had he chosen it?
Chloe's grumpy words reached his ears, and a tiiiny smile formed on his lips. Small reminder, that was. Dima had somewhat revitalized spirits.
"Piertotum Locomotor Annexus." A point and a swish later, the clay cat was lazily easing its weight off the paws he'd given it. Instead, it curled up on its bum and bared its teeth in a trademark hiss the sixth year knew far too well.
Just like what he was used to. Looked like he was done.

It was time to bring her doggie to life and Janelle was looking forward to it. She knew that only her best effort and total concentration would make this happen. And the fourth year was determined that it would happen. The professor revealed the spell that they would be using. An old spell with a new twist, it seemed. Figuring she'd better practice the spell first, Janelle went over the incantation in her head. Then she practiced saying it aloud several times, making sure to enunciate each word. "Pier-TO-tum Lo-Co-motor An-NEXus. Pier-TO-tum Lo-Co-motor An-NEXus. Piertotum Locomotor Annexus." That was a mouthful. Thankfully Janelle didn't have to say it three times fast.
Next it was a quick practice of the wand movement. Point and flourish, point and flourish. This was definitely the easier of the two parts of the spell. Janelle was satified with what she had done so far. Now she had to get her focus in order. Closing her eyes, she repeated the incantation to herself. She pictured her dog starting to move and jumping around at her command. Opening her eyes and taking a deep breath, Janelle felt that she was ready to give the spell a try.

It was amazing and disappointing all at the same time. Amazing because here was this thing, she'd made, that was able to move and act and do her bidding and that was simply mind-blowing to the first year muggleborn witch. She felt proud of her creation.
It was disappointing because unless she told it to do something, it didn't really do anything beyond that. Like had been discussed earlier there wasn't much will of its own in there. And that was distressing to Haddie. "Professor, is there really know way to give it its own will and thoughts?" She thought there had to be, that she'd seen it before. La Rue, the magical measuring tape came to mind, but the more she thought of it, the more he could simply be doing what was told of him, just with his own mini personality shining through. Wait, she had seen it before. In History of Magic.
"The portraits. They're inanimate. They're just spelled to be alive and be a small reflection of the subject painted, right? I mean they'll never be as full, complex or real as the wizard or witch whose portrait it is, but they certainly have traits from that person, and the ability to think, and act on their own. So why can't that same sort of thing be applied to our clay familiars?"

Was it really him that had to mold this clay? Because this was hard. Like... harder than drawing bats in his notes hard. He had tried to recreate a bat, but that turned into rubbish. He then considered going over to Dima and asking him to mold his clay for him (he wouldn't mention anything about the loogie), but then thought better of it, and instead went for a easy thing. A ball.
A ball was a shape, and something that could be commanded, and it was something that wasn't indecent. Honestly, they weren't all terrible. He bet Chloe loved this professor because like minds.
Now, he had his object, had to command it next.
He drew his wand and did the swishy flick thing, and said, "Piertotum Locomotor Annexus!" AND AND AND...
Not a damn thing happened.

It wasn’t that Brooklyn hadn’t been interested in the discussion, or that she hadn’t been paying attention. She’d been paying attention, just not saying anything. Not really taking very many notes either, since that was work she’d rather not do. She wouldn’t need notes for whatever activity they were tasked to do, and she doubted that they were going to only have a discussion. She would have been disappointed if she wasn’t able to actually try spells. She would have figured out a spell to try on her own if they didn’t learn one. Besides, she already had a familiar. She had Tywin, even if her cat wasn’t there. He still counted.
Finally, they were given instructions for an activity, although she’d raised an eyebrow at the instruction to spit in the clay. That was disgusting, and she wasn’t about to cry either. Not in public. She didn’t care if an emotional sacrifice was useful. She wasn’t going to cry, and besides, she liked her hair on her head. Not in dolls, since she couldn’t trust that someone might not use it against her. Either way, she’d gotten up and retrieved some clay before she sacrificed anything. The sacrifice came after she returned to her seat, as she reached up and pulled a single hair from her head. Now all that was left was deciding what she wanted to sculpt her clay into.

Ariadne gave one last look at her owl from an eye-level perspective and then stood to her full height. She felt so confident in this! She had the incantation and wand movement down pat, and she and her modeling clay owl had had a little pep talk seconds before. She was still holding on to the fact that the pep talk REALLY sealed the deal as far as meaning and emotions were concerned. YES, she really meant this. YES, she had her whole heart into it. YES, she wanted owl very, very badly!
Ariadne mentally reviewed the incantation and wand movement. Piertotum Locomotor Annexus...a point and a flourish of the wand. There was no way she could mess up now! She was just THAT confident! She didn't want to waste any more time getting prepared for this. She pointed her wand toward the modeling clay owl. "Piertotum Locomotor Annexus!" she called out. She gave her wand a nice flourish, causing a slight blue glow to come from the owl but nothing else. It had almost worked! IT HAD!
She would just have to try it again and again! She would get this!
Just when Mason thought this class couldn't get any cooler (well apart from the whole crying thing)
Her crow had gotten along nicely. Mason was no artist, so the little clay-figurine was a great accomplishment to her.
Piertotum Locomotor Anne-what-is?
Mason looked at her little figure and whispered the words, practising the foreign sounds, "Pier-TO-tum Lo-CO-motor An-NEXus."
Pier-TO-tum Lo-CO-motor An-NEXus.
Pier-TO-tum Lo-CO-motor An-NEXus.
Pier-TO-tum Lo-CO-motor An-NEXus.
When she had practised the words enough, Mason pulled out her Yew wand and pointed it directly at the little crow. "Pier-TO-tum Lo-CO-motor An-NEXus!" Mason said the spell as loudly and as clearly as she could. She even did the little flourish-thingy with her wand.
Nothing. Silence. Nada. Zippo.
Um, what?
And then she saw it. Her desk turning blue before settling back to the original wooden form. Oh sweet baby Merlin, some of her tears had fallen onto the desk while she was crying.
NO! NO! NO! HELL NO!
Oh Merlin. . . had she just animated her desk?!
0______0
"PROFESSOR!!!!!"
==================
Oh my Merlin, really??!!
Mason was freaking out because um, hallo, she had just animated her FRIKEN' DESK!
And she was definitely not going to make matters worse by actually talking to a desk, much less ask it to do a back-flip. Seriously?!! Just when things started going her way, bad things like this always happened.
Well clearly nobody was noticing how she was literally having a breakdown. She just gave Haddie nervous smile back. She seriously felt like she was going to vomit. That'll probably make the desk's bond to her even stronger. GREAT!
"Well isn't this just SPLENDID!!!!" she shrieked as the table roiled and gave a little jerk. Now the thing was bloody mocking her too?
"Professor! I realllllyyyyy need your help!" she basically shrieked, "What do I do?!"
Was literally nobody even going to try and help her? A First-Year whom ahd clearly no control over anything.
Again FAN-FRIKEN'-TASTIC!
The screaming was really very unnecessary. Nana cringed, her sensitive ears ringing at the panicked call from Miss Stevens. "Amaterasu." It was one thing right after the other today. Bleeding, dead snails and now screaming children and.... Animated desks. Nana sighed internally as she made her way over to where the student was still sitting and being praised by her fellows. "Miss Stevens, the classroom is not the length of a Quidditch field is it? You have no reason to be screaming. Should you need my attention in the future and it is not an emergency, I suggest you raise your hand and not your voice." Tucking back a lock of her hair, Nana wearily eyed the desk. "This does not count as success. If you had performed the spell correctly there would not have been a possibility to animate and bind something to you without your dna." Nana explained calmly. Taking out her wand she pointed at the desk. "Finite."
"Miss Stevens." Her tone was softer now, no need for a further reprimand. "I want you to try again. Take your time, and focus on your intent to animate and bind, not simply to animate..." Perhaps she ought to say something encouraging here... Encouraging, but not too sweet. Hm. "It is not failure until you stop trying." She gave a nod and was about to walk back to the front of the class, when she decided to better watch the class' progress by taking another turn about.
Good, good.
See was seeing concentration, dedication and even a few successes. Nice to see that despite all the interruptions her students were still carrying on diligently in their work. They were a good bunch, an excellent bunch. She took back all her unkind thoughts from the feast.
SPOILER!!: Hady Lynch
Quote:
When both younger girls were sorted and Professor Ichihara moved on with her lesson Hady made sure to pay full attention. Like ALL of her attention. Every single ounce of it was on Nana and what was being said. This was her familiar and she wasn't going to mess things up. She did have a question though. It wasn't the most important one but she was curious about it. "Professor there's just something I'm wandering. If your familiar is like a connection of yourself would it be at all similar to the form of your patronus or animagus? Or won't any of those creatures be connected in anyway?" Her patronus was a Fennec Fox yet when she began modeling her clay and let her hands do all the work she ended up with a Hedgehog. What was up with that?
"An interesting question, Miss Lynch." Nana said, giving the Slytherin a small smile. "A wizard's Corporal Patronus and Animagus form are example's of that wizard's personality and are considered another extension of the self and the spirit. Familiars, true Familiars like our Kitsune might have been are not a reflection on their wizard partner. They are their own spirit, their own entity bound closely to yours. They will listen to you, love you and even die for you, but they are not you. Think of them as an animal soulmate."
"Does anyone else have any questions?" Nana asked, turning her full attention back to the class.

Janelle tried to keep her concentration, but it wasn't always easy. Shutting out everything else going on in the class was a challenge. Keeping it out was even harder. But the time was now and Janelle was going to get started. She pointed her wand directly at her dog who was resting on the desk. "Piertotum Locomotor Annexus", Janelle said as she flourished her wand.
Eyes on her familiar, Janelle was dismayed to see it standing still. What had she done wrong? Of course she had hoped to get it right on the first try. Unfortunately, it was not to be. Trying not to be discouraged, Janelle prepared to try again.
This time Janelle visualized her dog moving......barking and jumping around. The vision made her smile. It also made her more confident that her spell was going to work. She just had to be patient and keep trying. Once again, Janelle pointed her wand at the clay animal containing her hair. Taking a deep breath, she gave her wand a flourish. "Piertotum Locomotor Annexus", she said, hopefully with authority. She held her breath and hoped against hope that something good would happen.

This was ridiculous. No matter how many times he tried Bastien just could not get the bloody ball to BOUNCE. Why was that such an impossible task? He could cut a person in half with his wand, but not make a ball bounce. Ridiculous.
This was stupid, and he was NOT giving up until he got it right.
So he tried again.
And again.
And again.
No luck.
He considered smashing his ball.

Haddie pondered this silently for a minute. If she was understanding the Professor right... "So our insentient familiars will have the same freedom and range of personality and all that portraits display?" She glanced down at her clay lion, slyly and smirked. If that was true, her little familiar was being a bit devious, which kinda left no doubt that it was her familiar.

All around her, Dot's classmates had made animals, but since the professor hadn't said a WORD about her shoes... well. That was just clear indication that Dot might be doing this wrong, but she wasn't doing it so wrong that the professor felt she had to step in. Besides, the shoes felt like a part of her spirit was already in them, especially as she shaped a second one and attached them with a flattened length of clay as a ribbon.
The incantation was a tricky one, though, she Dot had to ignore her ballet slippers for a while as she practiced mouthing and then speaking the words. "Piertotum Locomotor Annexus. Piertotum Locomotor Annexus." It was the PIERTO part that her tongue kept stumbling over, and Dot pressed her chin hard into her palm as she focused intently on the words.
"Piertotum Locomotor Annexus. Piertotum Locomotor Annexus. Piertotum Locomotor Annexus." Was there ever an incantation so LONG as this one?

What had gone wrong? Ariadne had been SO SURE she'd done everything correctly! ARGGHHHHHHH. It was so frustrating to want something so badly and just KNOW it was going to work out and then...NOTHING. Ariadne was so frustrated that she gave a deep sigh and released it out in a huff as she sat down next to her owl. Her STILL owl. She looked at it as if doing so would suddenly give her inspiration, and the owl would spark to life.
It didn't.
So she stood up again and pointed her wand at the owl. "Piertotum Locomotor Annexus!" she called out, trying to give the incantation as much expression as she could. She gave a nice flourish of her wand, hoping she'd done everything the right way this time. Again, the owl gave a slight blue glow, but did nothing else. WHAAAAAAT.
"Professor?" she said, raising her hand. "I'm not getting ANY results. Well, just a faint blue glow. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong..." It just wasn't FAIR.

Once the words felt at least mostly familiar in Dot's mouth, she was ready to add the wand to her casting. Intent was easy for her, at least with Charms, although Dot wasn't sure if it was skill or stubbornness or some combination of both. Either way, she settled into the wanting her spell to work properly, the shoes to dance, as she pointed her wand at the clay slippers.
"Piertotum Locomotor Annexus." The slippers took on a blue glow for a moment before it faded... but nothing happened. They just sat there, like the cast offs from a show that no one had attended. So sad. "Dance," Dot whispered, lifting her wand and her whole body at the same time. The shoes lifted too, the right one going up on pointe and the left sliding up to rest above an invisible knee.
Just exactly how Dot was standing. "Dance more," she put her feet down but imagined herself taking the next steps, foot slipping out and away, the other following in a leap and a glide. And her shoes danced too! Would this work on her real slippers? What if she wrapped some of her hair in with the threads she used to fix the soles?
"Leap! Spin." The shoes dancing a choreographed routine Dot knew by heart, made her heart light and a giggle escaped before she could catch it. Transfiguration should NOT be fun.

Kaycee looked at the lump of clay and blinked. Several times. She wasn't about to spit in something she was going to mold. She also wasn't in the mood for a haircut. So really, crying was the only option.
This was going to be just a bit embarrassing.
She knew she'd be able to cry. She just didn't know if she'd be able to stop. But... like... here was to making a friend right?
She stared at the clay and began thinking. Of home. Of New York. Of her poor puppy. Sniff. Before she knew it there were tears dropping on her clay. She leaned forward at her desk in an attempt to hide her face. She was not a pretty crier.
Get a grip, Richards!
She quickly wiped her eyes and folded her clay in two. She had to hide the evidence. She then fanned her face a few times. Okay. Yes. Okay. Recover.

After giving a few more flourishes with her wand, Esme felt that she was ready to try the spell out for real. If it didn't work she would just keep trying until she got the desired result. Honestly she had a feeling that it this would take more than one go because animating objects wasn't exactly her forte.
Here goes nothing...
Taking a few deep breathes, she tried her hardest to clear her mind of everything besides what she wanted the spell to do. In her imagination he Unicorn was alive and galloping around her desk. It was time to make this a reality.
Pointing her wand at the clay model, she gave a little flourish. "Piertotum Locomotor Annexus!"
Nothing happened.
Okay then. She was not going to be bothered because she had expected as much to happen. "Piertotum Locomotor Annexus!" The Unicorn STILL wasn't moving. Maybe she wasn't putting enough conviction behind the spell. Esme would focus harder and then it would work! Her mind flashed back to the lesson last term where Professor York was explaining how important it was to keep from getting frustrated and discouraged if things take a while. She was going to keep that advice in mind whenever any spell gave her difficulty.
"Piertotum Locomotor Annexus!" she called out putting all she could behind it. Seemed that third time really WAS The charm, because it had worked!! She beamed as she saw the soft blue light vanish within a flash.
"Come to me," she said as she held her hand out towards the Unicorn. It trotted over and she patted its head. "Good girl."

The clay stayed a blob, no matter how many times the boy had rolled it around in his hands. He didn't want to shape it into anything in particular. Cal's thumb pressed two eyeballs into the blob, lowering down to look at it at eye level. Lazily, he mumbled the spell.

Eyes concentrating hard on the fox clay that their professor brought out, Jace listened, and observed carefully how things were done. When the fox came to life, the Ravenclaw felt inspired to give his magic a second chance. Maybe...maybe it’s not so bad using his wand after all. Accidents do occur, but if he will himself to be very careful and precise with his movements, he’ll succeed in spell-casting.
Not wanting to disappoint his sensei, Jace got his cherry wand out, and practised the wand movement.

Now she had her clay, and the hair she’d sacrificed for the activity. All that was left was to decide what exactly she wanted to make, and Brooklyn let her blue eyes scan the others just out of a matter of strategy. She didn’t want to knowingly copy anyone, but then she didn’t see how she would. Even when she saw Dot’s dancing slippers, obviously meaning that the older girl had moved on to actually animating her familiar. Brooklyn could have done ballet slippers, but that hadn’t really been an option she’d thought of. She wasn’t going to copy, either. She was going to go her own way, and as the memory of the stone dragons came back, she knew exactly what she would create. It would just take a bit of work, since she’d never thought of herself as an artist.
It would have been easier if they could cast a spell to transfigure the clay in the first place, but she resigned herself to having to get her hands dirty. Clay wasn’t neat after all. It was basically dirt mixed with other things, and now it would be mixed with her hair too. She created a little dent in the starting ball, coiling the hair into the depression and then squeezing the ball back together to cover the hair. Now she just had to sculpt, and she called up an image in her head as she started to pinch and pull the clay into shape. The hardest part was going to be the wings, since she knew they’d have to be thin. Soon enough, though, she had a little clay dragon on her desk, waiting to be brought to life.

"PEER-TOHH-TUM LO-CO-MOTOR AH-NEX-SUS" Henric pointed and flourished with his wand. Nothing happened. He stared at his clay model and poked at it. "Hmm...why aren't you alive yet? Didn't the spell work?"
He wondered if he pronounced the spell right? He scratched the side of his forehead and glanced back up at the board again,
"Piertotum Locomotor Annexus"
He watched his classmates animated the clay successfully beside him. Wow...cool...should he try again?
