| | Round One, Task One You are guided with your partner into a circular arena surrounded by walls from all directions. There's a metal plaque fixed to the ground in the middle. The ground is bare and a little muddy from the weather, but it is obviously set up for something. The walls are impossible to climb and the door through which you walked in is firmly shut. The sound of the audience can be clearly heard yet you see nothing but the walls and the sky. At least you have your wand!
When you approach the walls, you'll find random carvings all over the surface; some are old, some are new, some make sense, and some look like doodles of a child. Your main goal is to locate four well-shaped runes. Those runes, once found, will form a word that will be your first clue to getting out of this arena. Find the runes, make a word, and carve it on the plaque in the middle of the arena. Please Note: Only Beau Gagnon and Zéline Labelle, as well as approved staff accounts, have permission to post in this thread. Hogwarts and Durmstrang competitors: NO PEEKING! KEEP OUT or you WILL be penalized! |

Beau looked around they were surrounded by walls. The door that they had walked through was closed tight. They were trapped inside.. Looking over at Zéline he gave a nod towards the walls they should go check them out, maybe they would have a clue on how to get out of there. As he reached the walls he saw carvings all over.
Something was oddly familiar about the random carvings. Looking over at Zéline he asked "Are zey runes?". Some looked like them but he wanted to ask her just in case she saw something else.

Fifth Year | Zéline followed Beau into the arena and mimicked him as he looked around. She was anxious and wanted to finish this task as quick as possible. She nodded at her friend and followed him once more as he walked towards a wall with carvings all over.
Zéline stared closely at the carvings and ran her fingertips through the wall. "Oui." She replied to Beau, not looking at him. Only then she realised he had spoken in English. Alright. "How meny do you sink zere arr?" She asked still running her eyes through the carvings, trying to recognize some of them. She remembered something about it being four Runes, but right now she couldn't decide whether her mind was playing tricks on her or if somebody had told them there were four proper Runes carved on the walls.
She sighed and ran her hand through her hair. Then she suddenly exclaimed "Oh! 'Ere! Do you sink zis is one?" She pointed at what she thought was the equivalent to the letter E. It resembled the letter M in her opinion, which was the equivalent to the E. "And zis one?" She now used her fingertip and showed what it looked like an X. "Do you sink zis is a G?"
After a few seconds, Zéline sighed in slight frustration, tightening the grip on her wand. "We 'ave to be sure zey arr not just random marrks! 'Ow arr we going to do zat??" She needed to calm down. Getting frustrated would not make things easier and she knew it. Zéline sighed again and shut her eyes tightly, taking deep breaths and trying to keep calm. "Can you see anysing else?" |

Beau looked over at Zéline as she reached the wall with him she looked and sounded anxious. Hearing her answer he smirked he realized he had spoken in English he had gotten used to speaking English to the Hogwarts students that it had just stuck. Better get rid of that before his parents heard him. "Zere could be many or only a few." He continued to look around the carvings, for anything familiar.
Looking to where Zéline had pointed he nodded no, "Non, zat is not a rune." He had went back to only stop again when she spooted some more. He repeated the same, non, non. Those were not runes. It was good she was looking, though usually she was good what was happening? "Clam down Zéline, we can do eet!" Not the best calming down speech but it was the best he could fo for now. "Remember ze runes!" Looking over at the runes he nodded. "Zere is Eihwaz." Looking more he pointed to another, " Zere is Raidho." Smiling he pointed to another one. And zere is Dagaz."
See they could do it, now they just had to see if there were more. " And zere is one more cna you see eet?"

Fifth Year | Zéline was getting more anxious by the second and Beau saying 'non' over and over wasn't helping her one bit. She grabbed her hair and paced up and down for a few times before stopping in front of the wall again. "Non, non! C'est mauvais!" She kept repeating herself, continuing to gra her hair with one hand and shaking her head. "We need to forrm a worrd wis ze Runes!" She said, no longer trying to keep calm, but not completely losing it yet. Zéline shut her eyes tightly again and took another deep breath. "What word can you forrm wis zese Runes??" She finally turned to Beau, not being able to keep her anxiety to herself. "We need a worrd!!"
Zéline looked at the wall again, eyes travelling around like mad. "'Ere!" She exclaimed once more. Was she seeing things or there were many Runes there?? She could suddenly see a lot more than four, but that was probably her imagination? "'Ere, look! Zis is... a V." The equivalent of a V, of course, not the actual V. "And zis... zis is a D!" Or was it?? "C'est trč stressant!" Zéline groaned, staring at the carvings on the wall and running her fingers through her hair again. |

A rumble. The walls of the arena shake slightly before they start to move. Time's running out, someone must be close to finish.
You need to hurry before the walls trap you inside.

They were supposed to be making a word. Didn't runes have like an assigned letter. "Il est trčs bien!" She was stressing over this she was not doing so good. "Vous pouvez le faire!"
He looked where she pointed... Ah he understood now she was saying the corresponding letter not the rune name. "Oui! Or a w." Pointing towards Raidho, he said "Raidho eet R." Then pointing towards Wunjo the one she called a V and said "Wunjo eet W or V. and then to Dagaz, the same one she pointed to the one she called a D, "Dagaz eet D." Looking around more he had just saw Eihwaz he would have sworn at least. Seeing it he pointed "Eihwaz eet a vowel, like ei. Is eet y also?" "We 'ave to form a word. So we 'ave W, EI, R, and D. What does it form?" he asked her with his palm on the wall. After asking the wall rumbled. "What was zat? Does zat mean time is running out?"

Fifth Year | The French words seemed to calm Zéline down almost instantly. "Oui." And she muttered something about the English language under her breath and shook her head before setting her mind into the game once more.
Listening to Beau, she hit herself mentally for being so stupid. "Ohh, of courrse!" She smacked her own forehead. She always thought the relation to their own alphabet to be one of the most important things in Runes, and under such stress she completely forgot about linking them to their actual names. Hopefully Headmistress Enzo would never hear about this. Zéline shook her head again and paid attention to what Beau was saying. "W, Y, R, D? Wyrd? " She repeated out loud, but before she could think or say anything else, the walls started to move! "Non, non, non, non!" Zéline tried to concentrate, closing her eyes tightly and shaking her head, both of her hands grabbing her hair. "W, Y, R, D. Wyrd." She once again muttered a few things in French before opening her eyes widely and looking straight ahead. "Wyrd!" She stared into Beau's eyes and spoke almost out of breath. "Zee desteeny crreated by zee links beetween all sings and our own choices!" Zéline didn't know what that had to do with the task, but that was certainly a word! "Zere! We need to carve it zere!" She pointed at the plaque and rushed that way.
Would they be able to do it before time ran out??? Zéline was a mix of anxiety and excitement as she got closer to the plaque. |

He chuckled when he saw the realization hit her. "You skipped ze names." But that was okay Zéline always just linked them usually right? W, Y, R, D. Wyrd that sounded familiar!! He closed his eyes what did it mean... He opened them hearing Zéline repeat non, non, non, non he opened his eyes abruptly! What did it mean he couldn't remember! Luckily Zéline did. "Oui! Zat is what eet means!" following Zéline he quickly ran over to the plaque! They had to hurry, it was almost out of time. So now we seemply crave ze runes." "I'll carve two." He scanned the plaque quickly before he held up his wand and took a breath. His first rune first, "Intaglio Wunjo... Wunjo... Wunjo... Wunjo...Wunjo..." he chanted, focusing and his wand moving in that familiar P shape of the Wunjo rune. Sharp P. No curves in there at all, no curves. He remembered as he started to form the > of the rune.
Some time later the P shape of the Wunjo rune was carved onto the wood and Beau let out a grin, he didn't do those often. He smirked sometimes but never did he grin. Okay so now the second one. "Intaglio Eihwaz... Eihwaz... Eihwaz... Eihwaz...Eihwaz..." The rune was a backwards Z shape. His focused more on this rune, he did not want to mess up. He made sure the middle line was straight when he got to that point, he had to. He could not mess up!!
When he was done, the French boy actually grinned a second time before stepping away from the rune and turned to Zéline and put his hand on her shoulders, knowing French helped her last time just in case there was any nervousness or stress whatever it was left in here he said, "C'est ŕ votre tour de tailler les runes. Vous pouvez le faire."

Fifth Year | Zéline reached the plaque after Beau and stood behind him while he carved the Runes. She enjoyed doing that, but since he had gotten there first, he should do it. There didn't have much time anyway. She stood in silence as he chanted and carved each Rune, until he stepped away from the plaque and then spoke to her. "Merci, Beau." She gave him a genuine smile and got ready to carve the remaining Runes. "Intaglio Raidho... Raidho... Raidho... Raidho... Raidho..." Zéline chanted, doing the wand movement of a pointy 'R'. Carving Runes wasn't as fun as translating Runes - which she enjoyed the most -, but it was very fun as well. When Raidho was nicely carved, Zéline went on to the next and last Rune. "Intaglio Dagaz... Dagaz... Dagaz... Dagaz... Dagaz..." She did the sideways hourglass shape as she chanted this one, paying attention to the details, as in trying to make them as sharp and precise as possible.
When she was done, she stepped back and stood next to Beau and watched the plaque. |

As soon as the runes are carved on the empty plaque, they sizzle and shift presenting a new puzzle:
Interpret the puzzle correctly, follow the instructions accurately, and your way out of the arena will be guaranteed.

Fifth Year | As she watched it, the plaque started to change and before their eyes there was now other inscriptions. Oh, great, a puzzle in English. That was so unfair! Zéline couldn't help it but complain under her breath, always in French. But she needed to focus to try and solve this anyway. "We do not 'ave any stones to draw!" Draw in English meant 'picking up', right? Only if they meant drawing like... like little kids did. "Mmm... we do not 'ave stones to draw, like..." Zéline motioned as in Rune casting and such, when you picked Runes up. Literally. "...but maybe we could... draw them on the..." What was the word? She looked at the sayings again. "Heath?" "Spread our fate on the heath? Spread our destiny on the heath?" She started trying out different phrases and translating them to French to see if they would make any sense to her that way. Whose idea was this of making the competition all in English anyway?? That wasn't fair at all! "Non, non, non!" Zéline said after a while as she shook her head once again. Nothing she could think of made sense! "Je ne sais pas, Beau! Je ne peux pas..." She trailled off and restarted muttering random things in French. Mainly complaints about how unfair that all was.
Well, back to interpretating that literally and word by word. "I sink we weell need to creeate some stones zen? But zere is nosing we can uuse!" Zéline ran her fingers through her hair, letting her arm drop by her side as she sighed in frustration. She had no idea! |

That was why the walls didn't lower or move or whatever they did. It was English.. But he wasn't very good at reading English.. Not fair. Sigh but they had to do it. Beau muttered a complaint in French as he tried to decipher the words.
Draw? Like little kids. With what?? Ahh he nodded towards Zéline as she did a motion to show her thoughts. "Um... Maybe we make zem." Looking around were there stones? "Are zere stones, around 'ere?" there had to be right? It was outside. Listening to Zéline he nodded that was a good idea as well. "Is ze ground ze Health or ze plaque ze health?" "Spread ze destiny? Like how we want to get out? Is zere a rune zat means escape, leave, exit, or somezing?" Like the inner meaning of the rune. He leaned his head back thinking. There had to be something. Whispering to himself, "Penser..."

As you discuss with your partner, a few words start to glow on the plaque drawing your attention to them; "Spread", "Wyrd", "Heath", and "draw".
ooc: The next task is about to begin, but this task will carry on for another 24 hours.

The time you were offered was your only chance to make progress, too bad it was wasted.
There is another rumbling sound before the riddle on the plaque disappears, and the walls start producing white foam announcing the end of the competition. The grand doors to the arenas open up.
