19. Wand Before Hogwarts. 9 years old.
The wand had intrigued Tora ever since she had come to live with her grandma when she was seven. Unfortunately, Gram was somehow always a step ahead, beating her to the wooden rod before she could lay a finger within three feet of it.
But now Gram was suddenly “sick” and had dropped her wand to rush to the loo to take care of an emergency. Obviously, the Puking Pastille Tora had slipped in her lunch had worked. She grinned and started forward to pick up the object of desire…
”And what do you think you are doing?”
Billywig rot.

Reason: Table of Contents
Tora took the steps two at a time. She could just feel the staircases want to move, and she didn’t want to get stuck somewhere she didn’t want to.
Nearly to the top, just a couple steps from reaching the next landing, the staircase decided it was a great time to suddenly switch-a-roo. Nooo! To make it worse, this new route led her through a Gryffindor Quidditch celebration. Pushing through the red and gold mass holding up their seeker and shouting, “We’ve got Gold!” and “Caught a Seeker!” Tora tried to get to another stairwell.
She couldn’t. She was stuck.

Tora sat in the library struggling with remembering what each spell did. Unfortunately, her notes this year had gotten mixed up and she was fairly sure she had lost several pages. As one can imagine, it was quite difficult for her to make flashcards for any upcoming tests. Specifically referring to the final exams at the end of the year.
“If only I had some sort of dictionary for spells!” she burst out, frustrated.
“It’s called a spell book. Don’t you have one?” a student nearby smirked.
“Nobody asked you!” Tora shot back.
Still, it was a rather good point.
This was revenge. The loose-lidded jar of spiders in her bag had Tora’s creative anger fired up. Heh. The little prat wouldn’t know what hit him. She put the modified canary creams in a nice little package and slipped them in with his things. There.
Billywig Rot! Tora ducked as a Bat-Bogey Hex flew over her shoulder. He wasn’t supposed to have eaten them while she was nearby! She sent a return hex that missed and disappeared into a nearby portrait of some wizard. Great. If Tora got another detention now, she would surely get a howler from Gram. *wince*

Tora rolled her eyes as a couple of giggling girls asked the professor if the class could learn how to brew Amortentia. Of course the answer was no. Why would anyone want to use that silly potion anyway? It wasn’t like it actually made the drinker love you. Besides, there was no one Tora would use it on anyway.
That was a lie. A face flitted to the front of her mind- NO. She would not think of him. It didn’t matter if he didn’t like her back, she wouldn’t force him to. He was just too precious to her.
Tora was running late for Astronomy. How could this have happened?
Wait a minute. How had this happened?
It was that ridiculous writer’s fault! She probably hadn’t bothered to have the time to write Tora coming into class. ON TIME. Why couldn’t she be like every other role-player and pretend Tora had been in class from the start?!
Didn’t amadshade care about Ravenclaw losing points? Or that Astronomy was Tora’s favorite class? Apparently not. Tora glowered at nothing, since she couldn’t actually see her writer, and stomped towards class; none too thrilled about having to explain why she was late.

Adrienne would love this, Tora thought before she remembered that she was ignoring the other Ravenclaw. Normally if someone ticked Tora off this much they would get an angry earful, but Adrienne was always left unscathed. Tora didn’t want to hurt their friendship by saying something while angry that she would regret later.
So Tora ignored her. It could be for as short as a couple minutes or it could, at its worst, stretch over several days. Either way it would end with an apology from one or the other, but for now the friends would just have to wait.
By now, Tora had become used to the lack of house elves at Hogwarts. Not that there really was anything to get used to; it wasn’t like Gram had any at home. The thing she had gotten rather unused to was all the ice cream. There was only so much ice cream an eleven year old could eat, no matter how much she loved it, and Tora has just about reached her limit. This was the reason why, when the rest of the school became ridiculously happy then horribly depressed after, Tora was perfectly fine and her usual semi-bipolar self.

‘Noel smiled, bittersweet, as she faded into the darkness, smiled at the night and the glittering stars overhead. “Goodnight”’
Tora let a tear leak from her red eyes as she closed the book’s back cover. She had finally finished reading Up, Up and Away, a novel about the stars, space, and a girl who tried to keep it all in her pocket. Reading the ending had touched Tora in that special way books can, leaving her emotions spent and throwing the second year Ravenclaw into a mild form of depression. Maybe she shouldn’t read a book so unhappy next time.
14.) Hogwarts, A History First Year. Common Room. December.
Tora was falling asleep over her Hogwarts, A History textbook, something surprising considering she was a Ravenclaw. Why was she a “Ravvie” again? It didn’t make any sense. The Sorting Hat had said she was placed in the blue and bronze house for her curiosity, but Ravenclaws were supposed to be clever and smart and hell, she couldn’t even get the riddle on the doorknocker half the time!
Tora shook her head in a valiant attempt to wake herself up. She needed to concentrate on finishing this History of Magic essay on dementors and the times they had invaded Hogwartzzzzzzzz………

Once again, Tora was curious. This time the object of her query had to do with the strange and interesting guests that had joined Hogwarts for some academic Triwizard Tournament. Rather, the “European Bureau of Wizarding Education Quiz Bowl Scholarship Competition”. Hey, it had the same general idea and who cared about the name? Anyway, with this many visitors, there were just so many questions! Like, were all the people from Beaubatons part Veela? But what about the Durmstrang kids? Were they really as menacing as they were rumored to be? Tora couldn’t wait for the chance to question them!

It was late when the fifth year entered the alcove in the library reserved for the future. With the New Year came thought of what she could possibly do after Hogwarts. University was probably the next step, but what after? She ran her thumb across the edges of the magazines, her eye occasionally catching on a profession; Auror, Curse-breaker, Unspeakable. She knew she would be choosing new classes soon, ones that would change her life, and she wanted to be prepared. Astronomy was her favorite subject, so that’s where she started researching career choices; with her passion for the stars.

44.) Ford Angila Sixth Year. Common Room. January.
“I’ve got a new Ford,” Angila bragged in the common room the day after winter holidays ended. The Muggle driving age in America was 16 and Angila’s parents had apparently gotten her a new car. Tora rolled her eyes at her age mate. Even though her parents were not magical, she had grown up with a grandma who was very much a witch. Because of this, Tora thought it slightly ridiculous to be so proud over something like a car when wizarding children could use a broomstick at any age. If Angila could apparate, well, Tora would be jealous then.
18.) Whomping Willow Second year. Whomping Willow. October.
When she had first heard rumors about the knot in the Whomping Willow, Tora had been too busy with final exams to let her curiosity get the best of her. But now it was fall, just the right time, Tora thought, to go on an adventure.
The tree stood, eerily peaceful: a still and silent warning to the little Ravenclaw. Which she promptly ignored. A branch whipped around her ankle and jerked. As she tumbled, Tora remembered a particular saying Gram told often, ‘If you can’t take the heat, don’t tickle the dragon.’ She realized her mistake far too late.

It was probably the first time Tora didn’t want to know. She’d wondered when she walked in on her best friend crumpled over a letter from home. She didn’t wonder now, she knew. And she was angry. And she hated Adrienne’s parents. They could’ve held it together for one more term. Sparing Adrienne should’ve been worth it.
But it wasn’t and now Tora was doing her best, comforting Adrienne in the same awkward way she’d tried to comfort Drew when he’d been sent away from home.
If she hadn’t wondered… but Adrienne needed her. So she wondered and she knew.
I resolutely refused to move or let a single branch sway. At least the birds were smarter than the wind. They knew I wouldn’t bend and let them make nests and happy little homes in my hair.
Then the girl appeared, jauntily skipping along. Annoying.
Sigh.
What did students not understand about the “Whomping” part of my name?
I shook out my leaves and attacked, knocking the girl to the ground. I bumped her along on my roots and flung her a good ten feet from my trunk. I hope she stays away.

Her feet did pause, however, when Adrienne said she didn't need her. Tora wasn't stupid. In her experience, whenever anyone shouted something along those lines it meant that they truly needed someone. So Tora stopped for a moment and considered going back to talk, but she didn't. She had been there for Adrienne. Not anymore. Tora didn't need to say anything in the silence that followed. She’d made her point. Deliberately moving forward again Tora turned the corner at the end of the hall and didn't look back. By the time Adrienne voiced her feeble apology, Tora was already gone.

Note: This is from an actual RP. Unfortunately I can’t find it in the Archives.
Tora Grace Gallaway was, once again, outside at night. In the dead of winter.
She shivered and wrapped her cloak tighter around herself. The soft alpaca sweater from Grandpa (given as a present from Peru) was the warmest piece of clothing Tora owned, yet it was no match for the northern winds.
It wasn't her fault, Tora decided, that she was out in the cold. The stars had just been too amazing from her tower window; she couldn't resist sneaking out. Captivated, she barely noticed the fine craftsmanship of the goblin snowman to her left.
Her eyes were distracted up.

88.) Sweet Tooth Fourth year. Great Hall. February.
Whooooosh! A package dropped into Tora’s lap suddenly from above, nearly clipping the edge of her spoon on its way into her lap. Tora glared up at her owl’s retreating back.
The package itself was lumpy and pink and crinkled when she picked it up. Hmmmmm. The tag read:
Hope this satisfies your sweet tooth! Happy Valentines Day! Love, Gram
This was ridiculous. Fourteen years old and still getting candy from her grandma on Valentine’s Day? It was so…childish. Tora hid the present under her chair so no one would notice the pink wrapping. Maybe she could transfigure the color…?
