It’s a cold, crisp Friday in February. You’re on your way to a Muggle Studies lesson. Breakfast is settling in your stomach. The air smells of orange peels and forest pine air freshener. Life is pretty okay. Anyway, ANYWAY, AnYwAy. Welcome to the Muggle Studies classroom where everything looks completely and utterly normal (except for your professor who looks like a pool noodle… but you’ve come to accept that this is his normal).
As you walk inside this morning, you’ll notice that the desks are positioned in rows facing the front of the classroom today. There’s quite a lot of space at the front of the room, with the desks being a little further back and closer together than they usually are. There’s also a GIANT stack of cardboard boxes by the windows. What could possibly be inside them? Perhaps they held the same contents as the four open boxes in front of Finneas’ desk? Speaking of which, why did your professor keep so much makeup and so many hairbrushes? Who could possibly know!? Not you. Lesson plans are for your professor’s eyes and his eyes only.
Speaking of his beady, nervous eyes, they were currently zeroed in on the periodical he was reading at his desk. He reminds you to read the board as you walk in (even though it has had the same message for months now). Take a seat, class will begin shortly.

Ivy heard Claudine yelling at her and opened her mouth to say something, but she decided against it. She didn’t want to get a reputation for being a drama queen, after all.
But then she heard other kids around her saying things... that she was a dummy for making a flat screen TV, coming to Professor Schmoe’s defense. Knowing that no one was going to stand up for her, not to Claudine or any of the other students, Ivy went back to her desk in the back of the classroom, pulled out her sketchbook, and started to draw, not wanting to be a part of the activity anymore.
Instead, she drew a TV in her sketchbook and started drawing the two anchors on the television... a woman with shoulder length voluminous hair parted to the side, and a man with a well-combed haircut and facial hair that he kept neatly trimmed...

Sighing and rolling her eyes, Ivy put her artistic skills to work, though honestly it wasn’t much of a challenge. She just cut a rectangle in one side of the box and cut off all the sides. It needs a remote!” she realized suddenly, putting down her TV. Taking a scrap of cardboard, she cut it into a rectangle and began drawing a very elaborate looking remote control on the surface.
Finneas had anticipated this, er, yes. He grinned, taking absolutely no offense to this. If they thought he was old, what did they think about Professor Williamson? Did they know he was Finneas' professor back in the day? Heh. Talk about yikes. Amiright!?
Still, he did appreciate that Bernadette and Claudine came to his defense. They were all such good kids. Honestly, honestly. Though... He didn't know how he felt being compared to Ms. Grantham's gran.... He still gave her a, uh, smile though. A very uncomfortable one before turning back to Ms. Taylor. "That's, er, quite true!" He nodded. "You're welcome to make your television look however you'd like." He had gone for the more vintage look simply because.... honestly? He didn't know how he was supposed to make a flat screen out of these clunky boxes. He had a big brain, but very little creativity. Alas.

"Er...." He never knew what to say to this one. Everything that came out of her mouth was a surprise. He never knew what to expect. "There, er, won't be any shrinking today... Unfortunately." Was? It? Unfortunate? Though?
He didn't know why he said that.

And....... When he turned back around, he noticed Ms. Taylor was no longer working on her television and this was... concerning. Finneas bumbled over her way, looking over her shoulder to see what she was doing. "Er, Ms. Taylor... Is there a reason why you stopped working on your TV?"
Ivy noticed Professor Schmoe walking up behind her, but she didn’t care. When he asked why she wasn’t participating, she shrugged her shoulders and kept her head down while she continued drawing her anchors inside the TV screen. ”I just don’t want to be around everybody else right now,” she pouted. She wanted to cry and say that people were being mean to her and that she didn’t understand why no one liked her and that she wanted to go home, but she figured that would just get her made fun of even more. Instead, she just sat in determined silence, not looking up from her sketchbook. ”Can I Just draw it instead of pretending?” she asked, hoping he’d agree to the compromise.

Claudine wasn’t trying to be mean. Really, she wasn’t but this first year was testing her patience. The Snakette simply opted to bite down on her lower lip and not say anything. She wasn’t even going to snort at Ivy’s latest words to Schmoe even though she really wanted to. Claudine got not wanting to be around people {who would know that better than an introvert?} but wanting to throw a tantrum because a few students came to Schmoe’s defense? Did Ivy need reminding that it was she who started going off on Schmoe about his TV? Claudine shook her head and chose to say nothing else. Instead she finished up on her own TV. It had come along nicely, and as she stood back to look over her finished work, decided that she had been right to defend old fashioned TVs.
Now it was time for the ‘dress up’ part of things. Abandoning her TV for now, she wandered over to the boxes in front of Schmoe’s desk. The first box she peeked in held a considerable amount of makeup. Um… no thanks. Claudine wasn’t in the mood to apply gunk to her face. The strawberry lip gloss she wore would be enough. A blazer though, she could use one of those. After some examinations of the blazers there, a light pink one was selected. Lastly, a tiny clip on micro… microsomething that Claudine had sometime back seen the anchors wear. She’d just have to check her textbook to be sure.
Back at her seat, the Snakette removed her robe and tie to put the blazer over her uniform. A quick consultation with her textbook told her exactly where to put the microphone. Now… was her hair in place? Yes.
All that was left to do was to wait for the dreaded presentation.
Ashley threw a dirty look at Claudine. "I'd like to see you figure out how to watch TV on something that's 200 years old," she mumbled, unsure of if Claudine could hear her or not. She agreed that if someone wanted to make an old TV they could, but way Claudine had said it annoyed her. In real life, nobody ever used two-hundred year old TVs. It was cool for museums and art projects like this, but old-school definitely did mean bad if you were trying to watch TV. She rolled her eyes and went over to the makeup. She didn't normally wear any, but hey! there was makeup and why not go all out? She even put on some eyeshadow. She looked like an anchor now. She also looked hilarious. She then pranced around like she was wearing high heels or something. Gosh, muggle studies was fun. She looked at Ivy. Poor kid was missing out on this TOTALLY epic experience!!! This was so fun. She put the "TV" back on. "Hello, this is Ashley Fox, and I am here to tell you about how Muggle studies is my favorite class."
Tom was so confused about this lesson, seriously he wouldn't be going up and saying anything hadn't anyone heard of being shy on camera before, so this wasn't a camera but it was TV and that was the same thing, having to say something in front of everyone was just crazy and very upsetting to him. He though continue to work on making the t.v might as well do that part, though no way was he saying anything outside, he wasn't saying anything, he wasn't a reporter.

Well alright now. Class was about to focus on two of her favorite things.....television and arts and crafts. Naya was always down for a nice arts and crafts project. She eagerly went to get materials for her cardboard TV. Looking at the professor’s example, she smiled. It was an old fashioned television set like the ones she saw on the old muggle shows. Grabbing a box, scissors and some markers, Naya took them back to her seat and got to work.
She cut out a big square section of the box for her screen. Was she going to have to stand inside the box for her anchorwoman performance? Probably so. Once that was done, Naya took her various markers and drew the knobs and numbers on her box. She added a few other touches and when she was satisfied, she put her markers down.
Now she had to get herself TV ready. Naya went up to the preparation area and started by putting on a very achorwoman looking blazer. Then she took her hair out of its ponytail and combed it, making sure it was nice and big. Finally, Naya put on some makeup. A little blush, eye makeup and lipstick were all applied. Naya didn’t usually wear much makeup, if she wore any at all. However she went the extra mile for the “cameras”. Now she was ready for her closeup.

Bernie couldn't resist calling out her classmate/friend. Whaaaaaaaaat, Schmoe hadn't officially fired her y e t because no one look at the house points when u not logged in, k? so she was just doing her job.
"For YOUR information, Phoebe," she dragged over her bit of cardboard and sashayed right up to Pheebs, grinning playfully all the while, "there's a thing called working smarter, not harder, and maybe you should try it sometime." Bernie plunked her plasma tv (read: a flat rectangular bit of cardboard) down in front of her friend. "See, I'm already done, and you're still riding the struggle bus."
Poor thing. Did she need a hand? Bernie clucked at her sympathetically.

It was VERY fun to push Bernie's buttons, and even more fun to annoy Claudine Big Head. "I really thought we were gonna get shrunk. That's... disappointing."
She hadn't meant to offend the first year who had ALSO been making a flat screen, and Phoebe meandered her way in the girl's direction when she went to collect some of the combs and make-up bits and whatever to anchor-ify herself. "I like your TV, actually, and I was just giving my friend Bernie there a hard time because she's very smart and that makes her annoying. Come be my co-anchor, ok? I can show you how to make the VERY BEST cat eye. I've been practicing. I won't even show anyone else, so we'll be completely unique."
Serena had been focusing on designing her on television set that she hadn't even noticed, or acknowledged the fight ensuing on the other end of the classroom. She shrugged. She had a beautiful TV set in mind, one that she had saw in a vintage muggle shop in New York two summers ago, and she was determined to recreate it. "Professor, can we use magic to glue bits together?" She asked. Sure, they had glue, but it was gross and messy and it smelled funny.

When Professor Schmoe said they were making televisions, Heath initially thought that meant they would be building a real, functioning television from scratch. His excitement faded somewhat when he saw the model the professor had made. He supposed he should’ve guessed it would take longer than one lesson to build a functioning television! Picking up a cardboard box, he envisioned a design for his television. These things didn’t really lend themselves to a flat screen design, so he opted for a vintage model. Ooh, that gave him an idea! If this activity was going the direction he thought it was, he could model his news anchor character to fit the same era as his cardboard television. It was perfect!
No sooner had he returned to his seat with his materials when the drama unfolding among his classmates distracted him. He couldn’t help but feel a bit sorry for Ivy. He knew how it felt to be humiliated in front of an entire classroom; that happened to him practically every day in muggle school! The thought crossed his mind to invite her to work with him, but he decided against it because that might upset the girlfriend. That, and it seemed Phoebe was already offering to work with her. Hmm… looked like that situation resolved itself. Back to work!
Heath carefully cut out part of the front of the box to make the screen, leaving a panel at the right side where the knobs would go. Speaking of which, did Professor Schmoe have some wire for the antenna and bottle caps or large buttons he could use for the knobs? That would look more authentic than drawn-on knobs! Was there enough time to ask before they moved on? Probably not… he’d just use what he had. He cut off the bottom flaps of the box, using the cardboard to make the knobs and antenna. After gluing the pieces on, his television was done. He scrutinized his work carefully. It wasn’t the most accurate depiction, but not terrible for someone who wasn’t good at art.

Well, Violet had gotten her TV made---sort of. It didn't look much like a read TV (but how could a cardboard cutout do that, anyway?). She wondered if it would look better if she painted it all black and silver, so she tried that. It looked only marginally better.
How were they doing this assignment, anyway? She supposed she'd have to hold it up in front of her head, since she couldn't fit inside the streamlined frame. She had thought of making a microphone, but she didn't think she could hold the TV and that as well--besides, she remembered that the Muggle newscasters she'd seen hadn't held anything--maybe the microphone was really, really tiny and pinned to their jackets or something.
Speaking of newscasting--Violet supposed she should do something about her appearance. She had her usual button-up shirt and blazer under her school robes, and that would probably look professional enough. She smoothed down her hair with her hands--not much to write home about there, but at least it was short and easily managed; it would probably do. Should she put on makeup? Could she put on makeup? She had never worn it yet--her grandfather wouldn't hear of a girl of her age (fourteen years old, thank you!) wearing any, and she had no one to show her how to do it properly even if she could. But newscasters always looked so put together--Violet wondered if she could chance some powdered foundation and a touch of light lipstick. Maybe she couldn't mess that up....too much...

Cece actually really liked Professor Schmoe's old timey tv design. It had personality, she'd decided, and so she made her cardboard box tv the same style. Plus she imagined if you had a tv like that taking up all kinds of room in your house, you'd be sure to use it.
As for getting camera ready, Cecelia was GREAT at playing dress-up. She smiled a little to herself, heading on up to the boxes and grabbing herself some lipstick and a pink blazer which she thought would capture the viewers' attention. Her hair was already looking sleek and shiny thanks to her family's obsession with hair care, which meant she didn't have to worry too much about that part of the looking good thing. Blazer on, pop of red on her lips, fake microphone in hand, Cece was ready to be the best anchor in class.

Finneas did hear Ivy’s question, but just as he had opened his mouth to answer, er, it seemed that Ms. James had come over with an idea on her own. So Finneas quietly faded into the background, giving the pair a thumbs up. He was quite relieved, to say the least. Even if Bernadette was shouting again. She received a look for that. ”Volume, Ms. Grantham.”
It was then that he happened to pass by Ms. Anders just as she had a question. ”I’d rather you use the glue.” Because, er, the last time magic had been used in this classroom… It had ended in disaster. So. He’d rather avoid it.
It was also promising to see some of the younger students (Ashley and Violet) making quick work of their television crafts. Though some like Tom, for example, looked slightly more confused. ”How are you going, Mr. Simpson?” Best to ask incase.
Valencia never seemed to have trouble with the activities and neither did Naya, so Finneas only hovered near them for a few moments in case they had questions, but otherwise continued his rounds around the room. Mr. Jones looked to be doing alright as well, but Finneas walked his way just in case.
Anyway, ANYWAY, AnYwAy.
Seeing Cecelia ready for the camera gave Schmoe quite a reality check and he glanced at his watch, jumping into the air after realizing they were running the clock. Oops. Errr. He was never very good at that, keeping things on track. No matter, they’d just move along now. It was fine. Everything was FiNe. So he cleared his throat.
”Great work everyone! You can continue working on your televisions if you want, but errrr. We need to start wrapping up soon. If you haven’t already collected your accessories and gotten ready for your debut, feel free to do that now!” And to help each other with the makeup situation, if they so pleased. Must be difficult to do it on your own, er, Finneas really had no clue how Alina managed it everyday.
”You will want to partner up for our next activity. Groups of two or no more than three… As I mentioned earlier, you will be creating your own broadcast. You’ll need a name for your show, a specialty, and err a story of course! Work with your team to brainstorm these things and then decide upon a presentation style, maybe you can practice what you’ll be covering. And then, er, then we will take turns to share your broadcast with the class.” Was that straight forward enough?
OOC: Final stretch everyone, thanks for sticking with us <3 For this next bit, finish up grabbing props/accessories/doing makeup. Then partner up (if there are people who are partnerless, you can form teams of 3) and then put together plans for a broadcast.

"A cat's eye is that eyeliner where it makes your eyes look all big and mysterious and flips it up at the end," Phoebe flipped her fingers to demonstrate. She led Ivy back toward her own desk and her TV. "I'll do our makeup while we decide on our news cast."
She settled into her seat and sorted through the few powders she had picked up. "You're already so pretty, but we're going to go for polished and professional. Now, what do you think our show should be called? And what type of show should we have? News? Gossip? Do you like Quidditch?" They could do a sports show with Quidditch jerseys. That would subvert the gender norms!
interesting. They were making stories? Ashley had ideas, but what if nobody wanted to partner with her. "Does anyone want to partner with me?" She had a great TV, one of the new ones that she kept in her room, and she was okay with makeup. BUT STILL. WHat if nobody liked her? She wasn't comfortable intruding on someone else's group, so she just looked around anxiously, hoping someone would ask her to partner.

Heath had just put the finishing touches on his television when Professor Schmoe moved on to the next activity. He was getting excited! This news presentation was a great opportunity to hone his acting skills, but first he needed to look the part. After perusing the boxes at the front of the room for a few minutes, he chose a dark blue blazer and maroon tie. Did male reporters use makeup, or was that just for the ladies? If television was anything like the stage, the answer was probably yes, but Heath had no idea what he needed or how to apply it. So he was just going to ignore that part.
It felt like he was forgetting something else, but what was it? Oh, right! The mic. He clipped one of the fake microphones to his lapel. Thank goodness these were the clip-on kind, not the headset mics used onstage. Those things were annoying! With his mic in place, he was ready to go. Now all he needed was a co-anchor!
“Partners?” he asked Claudine upon returning to his seat. His voice dropped as he added, “If you like, we could structure our presentation so that I do most of the talking.” He knew how she hated public speaking. “By the way, how do I look?” he asked. “Should I tie my hair back or leave it down?” He gathered his hair behind his head in one hand to give her an idea of how it would look tied back.

Pouting at Professor Schmoe's response, Serena sulked back to the corner of the room where the supplies were, and grabbed a container of all-purpose glue, applying it liberally on her TV set. The Slytherin sniffed in disgust as the glue's smell wafted to her nose. Eeeew. Plus it was so messy.

Pouting at Professor Schmoe's response, Serena sulked back to the corner of the room where the supplies were, and grabbed a container of all-purpose glue, applying it liberally on her TV set. The Slytherin sniffed in disgust as the glue's smell wafted to her nose. Eeeew. Plus it was so messy.

YES. THANK GOODNESS. Someone was offering to be her partner!!! yay. Her moment of weakness waving passed, Ashley was once again confident. "We can be co-anchors! What do you want to talk about? Serious stuff or a funny story or what? We're gonna have a great presentation!" Because now she had a partner and nothing could go wrong.

Yeah yeah yeah makeup and costuming. Emmerson was VERY used to this from all her recitals and gymnastics competitions. Had to look pretty. Had to be graceful. Only some of the usual stuff mattered for this news anchoring business but that didn't mean she'd skimp on her makeup.
The First Year, tuning her classmates out, got set to looking gorgeous and was nearly done when she heard the professor talking about partners.
Partners?
"ME!!" Her hand shot up, sending her scrambling just seconds later when she accidentally knocked over the foundation she'd been using. "Me, professor, I need a partner!!! Someone pretty, me!" Her hand waved around, her other trying in vain to one handedly close red lipstick she'd gotten on.
The 11 year old jumped up from where she'd sat herself down. "Can I be lead anchor?"
Where was her blazer? It was nearly shoooowtime.

As a matter of fact, Claudine had neither heard Ashley’s words nor seen the eye roll because that particular Ravenclaw was not one she gave the time of day to. Even if she had noticed, she’d have just given the first year one of her famous judgmental looks before moving on with life. Instead, she was now focused on continuing the activity. She wasn’t worried about securing a partner. The girl stood by her desk, eyeing Heath as he got himself ready, waiting patiently for him to get back. There were already a few ideas floating around her head about what they could present on. Not to mention, Claudine hoped that he wanted to partner with him; Heath would make being out in the spotlight more bearable.
The fourth year breathed a sigh of relief when the Ravenclaw asked her. “Yes, please.’’Oh. Look at him looking out for her. Wasn’t he just the perfect gentleman? “That’s a great idea.’’ She gave him a grateful gaze. “I have a few ideas for the presentation but one stands out. What do you think of Crups taking Drama Lessons?’’ Did heath get it? The presentation could be on a combination of their interests.
Claudine took a bit of time to survey Heath. “Very handsome and professional,’’ came her verdict, her hand starting to extend towards his hair. Then she remembered that she was in class and quickly pulled back her hand. Woops.“Leave it down. It always looks best that way.’’
"A cat's eye is that eyeliner where it makes your eyes look all big and mysterious and flips it up at the end," Phoebe flipped her fingers to demonstrate. She led Ivy back toward her own desk and her TV. "I'll do our makeup while we decide on our news cast."
She settled into her seat and sorted through the few powders she had picked up. "You're already so pretty, but we're going to go for polished and professional. Now, what do you think our show should be called? And what type of show should we have? News? Gossip? Do you like Quidditch?" They could do a sports show with Quidditch jerseys. That would subvert the gender norms!
Ivy understood the words coming out of Phoebe’s mouth, but she couldn’t imagine it on her. She wasn’t really allowed to wear makeup. Though, she supposed her mom couldn’t really stop her since she was an ocean and half a country away. Plus! This was an assignment! She had to! She sat down on top of one of the desks so Phoebe wouldn’t have to bend over to work on her makeup and smiled when the older girl said she was pretty. No one had ever really sad that her before besides her mom!
Her feet swung gently as she sat on the desk and considered what kind of show they wanted to do. ”We should do one of those morning shows where they drink coffee and talk about what’s going on in the world, and then they interview like REALLY famous people! Meeting someone famous would be so cool!” It was just a suggestion... but if they did, who would they interview?

Violet suspected she would live to regret this--that little first year Emmerson was dead annoying--but she was also intrigued by her. How did anyone get to be that way, anyhow? She would make a good character for a story someday. And Violet really did not want to do this by herself, nor be the lead anchor--she had barely managed to get a little makeup on without looking stupid. Maybe she could do the weather report or something.

"Sure!" Serena replied, matching Ashley's enthusiasm. "I was thinking Hogwarts news actually?" She suggested. She hadn't heard anyone considering reporting news in school before. You see in this muggle school I used to attend before I turned 11, our school had this morning broadcast that you could hear over the speakers." Speakers was a whole different topic she was not willing to go into right now "I think that would be a cool thing to do for us. Like reporting the latest news happening in Hogwarts. What do you think?"
They could report about Headmaster Trent, the things roaming around the school, and everything else that the students were talking about over breakfast
