Today's charms lesson takes place on a chilly Tuesday morning in December. Normally at this time of year, Professor Marchand would have his classroom decorated with paper snowflakes and festive cookies and hot cocoa for the students, but today, the walls and refreshment table at the back of the room are dull and empty, much like the professor's eyes. As you walk in, you'll find the desks arranged into four long rows. On top of each desk lies a dummy with realistic-looking cuts, some deeper than others, and broken bones. Perhaps they provide a clue to the lesson's subject?
A gaunt, sad-looking Professor Marchand stands in his usual place at the front of the room dressed entirely in black, with the exception of his blazing red tie. A steady patter of freezing rain beats against the windows, and a quick glance outside will reveal a sky as dark as the professor's attire. Luckily, Professor Marchand has kept the room warm with plenty of heating charms.
Behind Professor Marchand, the following message is written on the blackboard: Please DO NOT touch the dummies. Class will start shortly, so please take a seat anywhere and kindly keep the chatter to a minimum.
OOC: Welcome to the first OOC lesson of this term! Please make sure you're up to date on Professor Marchand's rules as well as the school rules. Class will start in ABOUT 24 HOURS (2:30 AM EDT Oct. 5) HAS STARTED!.
Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Daisy entered the classroom and when she saw Professor Marchand, all she could do was give him a slight nod and a smile in greeting, not daring to say a single word, due to the school rules. Her face fell at the sight of her favourite teacher's appearance as she made her way to the front table and stood behind it. She wasn't going to sit down until Professor Marchand gave his permission.

Tad arrived for the Charms lesson a bit apprehensive on what to expect given everything that's happened lately. Why was the Professor looking so sad? He had to be going through a lot, Tad thought. "Hi Professor." He smiled and waved at him as he passed by. His parents always said a smile can brighten or uplift anyone's day. And he didn't want to be on anyone's bad side today.
Oooh, dummies! Tad really wanted to touch them but the board said not to. He was glad that the room was nice and toasty so he didn't have to ask someone for a heating charm. So he went to one of the closest tables to stand behind until it was time for class to start.
Théodore was rushing this morning. Not because of SORE by now he was used to it. But just because of his poor time management skills. His tie was a little bit loose and his shirt was not tucked in all the way and yeah it wasn't ironed. Maybe at some point it would be less points lost for skipping than for his uniform being like this.
He walked in and well not too many people yet, so guess he was early.
Weird, but it works
"Hey, Professor"
He was just going to stand behind a desk now and lean his legs on it. Do not touch the dummies. So does that mean he is not suppose to touch anyone in class or just the the literally dummies. Questions that didnt have an answer. He was thankful it was at least warm in the classroom.

Nettie was so relieved to see Marchard in the classroom when she arrived - even though he looked pretty upset. She didn't blame him. SHE was upset about everything as well. It was truly a relief to see him, because with all the recent firings, you never knew WHEN your favorite professor was going to just vanish.
If Marchard got fired, Nettie would just LOSE it.
Not saying a word to him as she entered - as per those stupid rules - she took her place and waited patiently for class to start.

Skyler walked into the charms class and looked around. There were dummies behind the charm's professor. She gave him a small nod but said nothing as she stood by her desk that she chose.

As the days had passed, Stasya’s feelings about the whole term had only gotten that much more complicated. Mostly due to the very real threat that the professors not brought in by the headmaster could be summarily fired at any time, and she really would rather not be terrified of every professor when she had so much more to deal with. Exams, general (as in not including all the new rules) prefecting, the Animagus training she’d still managed to keep going even if it meant having to run SORE in the mornings on little sleep. Visiting the barns and Professor Wayland. Her secret notebook had only gotten fatter over the days, waiting for the time she could smuggle it out over the holidays to get to Professor Hirsch. Someone needed to know the truth.
She had been surreptitiously keeping an eye on Professor Marchand over the past weeks too, so his appearance as the tall blonde prefect had walked into the Charms classroom hadn’t really surprised her. At least, she’d kept the frown inside, just in her thoughts, as she’d walked to her usual seat and given him the brightest smile she could manage as she stood quietly behind it. Given all the conflict in her head these days, it was getting harder to stay her usual self.
Maybe they were learning healing charms today?

Patrick made it into the classroom and noticed that Professor Marchand still hadn’t looked much better since the beginning of the year. Although any more Patrick was fairly certain that he too felt like he was struggling to find the joy in school. Anymore he was worried to so much as breath. He was really wishing his parents had let him stay with his grandparents.
Taking stock of which desks were open he walked over to one and stood behind it praying he didn’t loose more points since you know apparently having manners was grounds for point deductions. Nodding at Professor Marchand he stood waiting patiently so he could try and enjoy a class.

........ Uh..........
Had he walked into the wrong class?!
Lucas, who was standing near the door in shock, just..... looked at the scene ahead of him. Mainly, the dummies. There were dummies on each desk with cuts and broken bones and other things that were making him feel a little uneasy. It didn't sound like it was going to be a FUN lesson, you know? Everything looked really serious and miserable and he didn't like it.
...... was it too late to turn around and walk out of the class?
He didn't really know how long he was standing there but it was a while before he took a few more steps into the class...... and then a few more and a few more...... until he was standing near an empty seat on the emptiest row he could find. As much as he didn't want to be anywhere near these dummies, he couldn't help but lean forward slightly to try and get a better look at the cuts and things on it. They looked very real, didn't they? Huh. He.... half-wondered if they were going to be doing some more bandaging in this class. He did need some practice with the bandage skills.
And nothing was said to the Professor. Because rules, of course. But he did notice that the man looked a lot sadder than usual.

Classes were getting..... more and more boring with every silly litle rule the new Headmaster introduced. Chase was certain at this rate that the majority of students were probably contemplating transferring away from the school or at least maybe trying their hardest to convince their parents to remain at home. He was at first, hopeful, of possible treats when he entered the Charms classroom but became a little disappointed when he saw none there. It was dull, grey, and over the top serious. He frowned at first before smiled when he realized that Professor Marchand was playing by the rules as best as he could.
Smart man.
He was very proud of his Head of House. Chase nodded his head at the Professor and offered a small smile.

Chloe froze in the doorway to the classroom, observing the professor's big sad eyes with her own distraught expression. What was wrong with him? Was it the certainty of his own firing? Was it that his friends kept disappearing? Or was... it... that they were all so dumb and it broke his heart?
"Good day, Professor. I hope you're going somewhere pleasant for the winter holiday." She finally started moving again, much to the joy of anyone stuck behind her in the doorway. Chloe chose a seat in the middle of the room, somewhere easy to observe without being too extremely overt.
As she headed into the charms classroom she noticed that Professor Marchand seem to be upset. Who could blame him, the professors (the decent ones) were under as much if not more stress than the students. ”Hello Professor Marchand.” At least a greeting was still an acceptable way to show respect for professors. Or some of them. Some of them you couldn’t even do that with some. Anyway she give the professor an encouraging smile. He seemed even sadder than normal.
Juniper noticed the dummies and stopped to see what was up with them. She didn’t touch per the notice. She was immediately excited to see the dummies with cuts and maybe even broken bones from the look of them. This term was really feeding her ideas of becoming a healer. At least now she had something to look forward to in the lesson. Not that she wasn’t excited about a charms lesson either way. She went to her seat and stood behind it until it was time for the lesson to begin.

Everything about this school year was making Slate miserable. He had heard the rumors that school had that effect on some people, but this was clearly over the top.
He was, unfortunately, expecting an announcement that Christmas was cancelled any second now. That would sound about right considering it was the only thing that kept him going these days.
"Professor." he probably said out loud as he entered the classroom. Who could really tell these days? There was just... emptiness all around.
He then walked to an empty seat. He heaved his bag into the seat and began digging through it. Since they weren't allowed to sit yet, he might as well get set up for the lesson. He pulled out a water bottle, blue muggle pen, and regular pocket mirror and set it on the side of his desk. All items not contraband that he'd been carrying around in his bag just because he could.
He then glanced in Juni's direction. Was this considered too public? Which reminded him that he should mention to her that he had a ribbon in his bag that they could both hold an end of. No rule breaking there. The Ravenclaw would be proud of him.
He also had a mirror and was willing to learn morse code.
Because, apparently, certain people thought things like that would be less disruptive than handholding. (Which, coincidentally, had way more health benefits than annoyances.)

Loosening his tie just a bit as he stepped inside the classroom, Derf was quick to note the general demeanor of Professor Marchand....who honestly just seemed to get sadder and sadder each term. Of course this term the Hufflepuff could venture more of a guess as to why...but it was almost like the man enjoyed being unhappy with how things kept going on, you know? Unlike others, and even with the way guilt shriveled up his moderately fragile heart, he was relieved not to see any food or drink in the classroom and quickly made his way over to a seat towards the middle of the classroom...

"Good day, Professor. I hope you're going somewhere pleasant for the winter holiday." She finally started moving again, much to the joy of anyone stuck behind her in the doorway. Chloe chose a seat in the middle of the room, somewhere easy to observe without being too extremely overt.
...to stand beside Chloe. "Hey," he whispered as he set his bag down and stood dutifully behind his chair. This rule....wasn't so bad. Standing until instructed to sit and all. The standing provided a better vantage point to take in the classroom too and the....various levels of carnage that the dummies were in.
So...this was going to be the next level of RICE then? Was there another grain for healing charms? CORN, perhaps? With the C being for Charms?
Derf merely offered the deputy headmaster and small smile. Had to be hard on him since, well, he was technically the right hand man in terms of titles...but clearly wasn't in Headmaster Scrimgeour's eyes. That title officially fell upon Professor Fletcher...which, well, did that make Professor Marchand even more disposable? Could someone be fired for being...too joyless? Derf had, well, sorta hoped that the man would have acted more like a Patronus Charm against the dementor dictatorship overtaking the castle...but alas.

Well, this was gloomy. Cold, dark, no sweets (though she couldn't complain), not even a smile from the Professor. He looked quite.. depressed, if she was being honest. He looked how a lot of people probably felt several months into the new routine of Hogwarts. Still, Natalie was trying to remain as positive as possible.
Her eyes glanced over the damaged dummies as she walked into class. She hoped they'd be learning healing charms - which it did seem obvious they would be doing - so she could keep up and learn more skills for her future as a healer. Or a nurse. Or just.. somebody who could apply bruise paste to someone.
"Morning Professor," she greeted quietly, only making a brief amount of eye contact before standing at her station. She didn't chat, nor did she look anywhere but the front of the classroom.

Hanna was clad in her full uniform, with the scarf added for warmth. It wasn't the same Charms class she usually walked into, and Professor Gaston certainly didn't look like he usually did. The young Claw bit her lip as she walked into the class, giving him a nod in lieu of a greeting. She must remain silent unless first spoken to. She stood behind one of the desks and took in what was there. Hurt dummies. Were they going to be learning some healing charms? That would be pretty cool!
It didn't take long for Hanna to feel warm enough to take her scarf off, which she did, draping it over her chair. That wasn't against the rules was it? Hopefully Professor Gaston wouldn't be fired after the lesson, either. Sigh.

Gaston stood up front with his hands resting atop his cane, his right hand over the left to cover his wedding ring. He had given up a lot of things he loved for Scrimgeour's stupid rules, but this was too much. He shouldn't have to hide just because the old man was too hard-hearted to win the love of a woman (or man, if Scrimgeour swung that way)!
He glanced toward the door, watching for both arriving students and unwanted intruders. It was no surprise that Daisy was first to arrive, but what did surprise him was the lack of a greeting. Not that he could blame her, of course. He'd heard all about Scrimgeour's nasty habit of punishing students for politeness. Well, that was not happening in his classroom! "Good morning, Miss Swann," he greeted.

Even in his darkened emotional state, seeing a child smile never failed to melt his heart! "Hello, Mr. Potter," he replied, being careful not to use his ring hand to return his wave. For a moment, he thought Tad was going to touch the dummies, despite the instructions on the board, but he was glad that didn't happen.

So much for getting through this class without docking points from anyone! "Hello, Mr. Montmorency," he greeted; then his expression darkened slightly as he crossed the room to where the boy stood. "That uniform looks a mess!" he said, trying to keep his voice low so as not to attract unnecessary attention. "I'm afraid that's five points from Gyrffindor." There was an almost apologetic look in his eye. He hated having to be the bad guy and take points, but he had to abide by the rules as much as possible. "Please tuck in your shirt, and make sure tt's ironed in the future."

And another silent student. This was getting ridiculous... Scrimgeour's punitive rules, that is, not the students' fear of speaking. Biting back a fresh wave of anger at the self-proclaimed headmaster, he gave Skyler a polite nod of acknowledgement. "Good morning, Miss Queen," he said.

Gaston was pleased to see the Gryffindor girl prefect on time for the lesson... not that he doubted she would be, of course. Her smile brightened his mood, if only for a moment. He managed to smile back, though his smile was much less bright than Staysa's had been. "Good morning, Miss Dalgaard-Volkova," he greeted.

Chase also got a lok of concern as Gaston noticed his frown. If Scrimgeour's unreasonable expectations were crushing the boy's soul even half as much as they were his own, he could understand why! Or maybe he was just disappointed by the lack of refreshments... The dark-haired Frenchman shot the boy a quick apologetic look. Sorry, Chase! It went against everything he stood for to do away with the refreshments, but he couldn't risk it, not after what happened to Kalen! Luckily, the frown was soon replaced with a smile, which was returned, along with the nod. "Good morning, Mr. Splenley," he said.

Here was another student standing frozen in the doorway! Gaston was starting to get a little worried. Were the dummies really that shocking? He was suddenly jerked out of his thoughts by the sound of Chloe's voice, and he looked at her with a slight smile, a smile that grew as she spoke. The thought crossed his mind to award house points for striking up a conversation, but he knew Scrimgeour would likely interpret it as an act of defiance. He was already walking around with a target on his back; better not chance it! "Good day, Miss Kettleburn," he replied, smiling as his thoughts turned to the holidays. "I am; thank your for your concern. i'm going back home to France for the holidays. Do you have any special plans?"

Then he saw... oh, good Godric Gryffindor! That wasn't what he thought it was, was it? He was at the boy's side in an instant. "That's not a two-way mirror, is it?" he asked, scrutinizing the item in question. It didn't appear to be... good! Still, he couldn't take chances! His voice dropped as he added, "Please put that back in your bag. Some people might get the wrong idea..." And by that, he meant he half-expected Scrimgeour to barge in at any moment and jump to the worst possible conclusion.

...to stand beside Chloe.
Ah, here was the other Hufflepuff prefect! Gaston half-expected Derf to offer him a chocolate frog, like he normally did when he was sad, but he breathed a silent sigh of relief when that didn't happen. He would hate to dock points from someone trying to be kind just because of this idiotic food rule! "Good morning, Mr. Ashbury-Hawthorne," he greeted. He returned Derf's smile with a fleeting one of his own, giving him a polite nod of acknowledgement.
Oh, if only you knew... he thought. He wanted to be positive for his students. He really did, but it was taking every scrap of energy he had to hide his true self enough to comply with the headmaster's rules. There wasn't enough left in him to put on a happy act...

Gaston glanced at his watch. It was almost time to start, but he would wait a bit longer for stragglers. As soon as he glanced back toward the door, Natalie appeared and greeted him. He nodded politely. "Good morning, Miss McKinley," he replied, watching as she stood behind one of the vacant desks.

Sigh.
Hannah arrived soon after. The lip biting was immediately picked up on, and it earned a concerned eyebrow raise from the professor. Gaston may have to hide his empathy to keep his job, but he couldn't turn it off completely. He gave the girl a small, though still hopefully encouraging smile as he returned her nod. "Good morning, Miss Newton," he said. He wanted to ask if she and her family were planning to visit him and Rose over the holidays, but now was not the time or place. He supposed he'd find out soon enough.
After some time had passed, Gaston checked his watch again. Exactly 9:00 on the dot... time for class to begin. He pointed his wand at the door, and it closed (a bit louder than intended) and locked itself just after Hannah's arrival. If anyone asked, he locked the door so late arrivals would have no choice but to draw attention to themselves, but it was really intended to keep unwanted visitors out rather than students in. He didn't want to be caught off guard if Scrimgeour decided to spy on his lessons! "Good morning, class," he said, never moving from his spot at the front of the room. "Please be seated."
He glanced out at the students as he waited for them to take their seats. He was pleased that they'd all remembered to remain standing today; he really hated handing out punishments, especially for something that trivial! After a couple of moments passed, He went on, "As you've probably guessed, today we'll be covering healing charms." It was practically a necessity, given recent events!
With a wave of his wand, the writing on the board vanished, and the words: Healing Charms appeared in big bold letters. "Look at the dummies in front of you. Take a quick moment to assess their injuries, and name a spell you think would help them. If you can't think of the name of the spell, describe what it does."
OOC: Class has officially started! Feel free to jump in at any time; just pretend your charrie has been here all along. Late arrivals will receive IC consequences. As Gaston said, all you have to do is name a spell to help the dummies. You have 21 - 24 HOURS (12:30 - 3:30 AM EDT Oct. 6) to answer the question... I have to move us on a few hours earlier than usual because of a RL appointment. So sorry!

Daisy sat down, ready to begin the lesson. This was a subject that she hoped she was going to be a tad successful at today considering what had happened to her. Her hand immediately went up and she answered, "I believe Vulnera Sanentur is used to treat large wounds and to cease blood flow. Maybe that is what was used to treat my wounds last year but I wouldn't know."

Rylee had been on time for the lesson, uniform neat and tidy, the usual smile on her face whether or not she was happy. A simple greeting had been given to those around her the professor included while she had taken place behind her desk.
Once they had been given the okay to sit, Rylee had done so. Quietly she took out some parchment and her quill trying to ignore the 'dummy' that lay on her desk while she took notes. Healing charms. Was there a theme or something going on lately in these lessons? Healing potions and now healing charms. Seemed like all the professors wanted to make sure the students could take care of an injury.
Rylee raised her hand when it was her turn, "Episkey may be helpful. It's good with healing small injuries and broken bones."

Skyler let out a small sigh and sat down when told that she was allowed to. She took off her scarf when she saw that the other student did not get in trouble and she draped it over her chair. She had her uniform in order and ironerd so he could not doc points for that. Hopefully he does not get fired from his job after this. She did not know of any spells and the only one she knew of one of the other students already said so she kept her hand down and silently listened.

She didn’t care what anyone else said, it’d been a relief walking into Charms and not finding anything to give her anxiety cause to worsen. With the way the professors had been so heedlessly forcing rule breaking on them, the Ravenclaw had to admit she was relieved at the dreary setting. The man’s demeanour, while not unnoticed, was of little consequence to her. This wasn’t a happy term. To see a professor bouncing around with glee would have been off putting to say the least and would’ve sent her stomach churning something fierce.
This was okay.
Jessa took her seat when instructed to and spared a glance over at the dummies. They’d received notice too but they were also given little thought. The nature of the lesson was obvious but the man teaching it gave her little hope it would be in a way her own mind would appreciate it.
The Head Girl had long accepted that most lessons would leave her feeling under-stimulated.
“The suturing charm would be useful for deep gashes.” She sounded almost bored, her gaze set on the window she’d chosen to sit by. She remembered the last time some form of stitching charm was taught by the man. Halloween. He’d been appalled by her suggestion. It left her reluctant and disinterested in answering most times these days for questions of opinion. The man seemed to care very little for hers and she supposed she couldn’t blame him.

Taking a seat, Stella was glad that Professor Marchand hasn't been replaced, but she was worried. All the nice Professor's were getting sacked and all there was mean and cold ones. It made her shiver how Hogwarts was turning and she hated it. It was more like a military school then a place of magic and wonder.
Stella raised her hand. " W...What about Reparifors isn't it a healing spell that reverts minor magically-induced ailments?" Stella asked biting her lip. After the other Professor's cold reply she was afraid to answer questions but she knew how kind Professor Marchand was, so she wasn't that scared. This was probably one of the classes she could relax in besides Herbology and CoMC.
Juni sat down when Professor Marchand told them to. Think goodness the lesson was starting finally. The sixth year shook her head half amused by all of stuff on Slate’s desk, half trying to figure out what he was doing with all of it. Once she did she looked over at him and grinned. Right after Professor Marchand had told him to put it back in his bag. ”Thanks.” She was close enough to reach over and grab the mirror, look her at herself and place it into her bag. She grinned again and turned back to the front of the class.
Healing charms… of course. she listened to the professors question before she raised her hand, ”The Bandaging Charm is used to bandage and splint broken bones, and it’s said to help with pain too.”

Chocolate frogs had not had occupancy in the sixth year's pockets since that fateful Astronomy lesson. The weight of hypocrisy in his pocket from them as he had strolled back up to the castle that night enough to make him sink into the ground. He was surprised the club exchanging the wizarding cards was still instated given how things were going, though he was grateful it was still there. Small sense of normalcy, you know?
The locking of the door did not go unnoticed, especially given how he was hypersensitive to the fact that the door had shut given that SLAM. It made him feel...anxious though nothing that Alohomora couldn't fix in a pinch, he reckoned.
He also reckoned that this lesson, along with RICE, were a direct result of the carnage that had been last term. Better late than never, yeah? Though he had hardly been in any condition to fix himself up last term and thankfully Bel had been quick her feet to set his broken wrists on site.
"Not technically classified as a healing charm...but...Aguamenti..." he offered when his turn came. "...you gotta clean open wounds before you tend to them...flush out the surface and interior as best you can."

Chloe was so haunted by the professor's expression, especially at how it had lifted when she'd just been nice to him. Did that mean people generally weren't being nice or that he needed a kind word now and then? She smiled broadly at him but didn't continue the conversation, since it was just gonna get them both in trouble.
But onward... Oh, bandages! Juni was the cleverest. "I know the spell to conjure bandages! It's Inurio Bani." And she was having to practice it a lot lately.
