Located next door to Professor Flamsteed's office, the Astrophysics Laboratory is strictly off limits to unsupervised students and the door has been charmed locked. You could try to remove the charm, but that would not be very wise on your part as you would walk away with lime green eyebrows that won't fade for days and hair growing out of your ears down to the floor. On occasion, Professor Flamsteed will hold special laboratory lessons and assign homework that can only be completed by using this room. Those wishing to use the laboratory MUST do so under Professor Flamsteed's supervision.
The laboratory consists of 20 hardtop wooden tables with cushioned stools. On each table you will find a microscope and other forms of equipment to help students with their scientific research. The shelves on the walls are neatly organized with books, flasks, jars of powdered elements, and everything an aspiring astronomer could think of.

Music to his ears. The Gryffindor was early.
Opening only a few seconds after the knocks, Airey grinned down at the young man. "Good day, Mr. Zeke. Hope you don't mind my moving our little meeting to the astrophysics laboratory," he greeted. He figured that a change of scenery may be in the boy's best interest, given that the astronomer's office was his scene of authority and he had had to flex that authority upon Mr. Zeke twice. "I trust you remember the way?"
... whoa... that was quick. Zeke's eyes widened in mild surprise before settling for a greeting "Professor, sure, of course." He DID remember the way, and so he nodded, silently taking the lead to the room next door. He seldom visited the space, lessons aside of course, so when he entered he instinctively looked about the room with fresh eyes. It really was very sciencey, and... would he be needing it in the years to come?
Unsure of where to sit, he stopped at the first of the hardtop wooden tables and pulled out the stool. Here was fine with him. "So..." he added, unsure of how to start. How DID these things start?

Making sure to double back and pick Pebbles up off his desk - because there was NO way in Orion's belt that he was leaving her unattended - the professor scurried to catch up with Mr. Zeke and followed him with gangly grace into the laboratory. Instinctively reaching for his lab coat, the man had one arm through it before he realized he was moving on autopilot. "Right, won't be needing this today," he chuckled as he returned the coat to its hanger.
"Pick a stool and try to relax, Mr. Zeke," he instructed with a smile. "We aren't attending your academic funeral today. I see only good things on your latest progress report."

He waited, and then watched curiously as Flamsteed went to put on a lab coat... heh, awkward much? Zeke smiled, with one small nod of his head.
Yes. So.
He was sitting. Sitting and ready to have this chat, about OWLs and his future and things of that nature. Somehow he couldn't help but feel anxious. He remembered in his first year, being bright eyed and eager, and succeeding... but things got harder, and they got harder faster than he expected. When Flamsteed uttered the words ACADEMIC FUNERAL he had to wonder, was that ever on the mans agenda, if not now... then before? "Right," he replied, exhaling the breath he was somehow holding onto.
"I've... been trying to turn over a new leaf, you know... give things a better go." Have options. Options sounded nice right about now.

If there was any discomfort to be seen on the Gryffindor's face and in his demeanor, the self proclaimed expert on human behavior signals had entirely missed any indication of him being so. Instead he was finding a good spot to set Pebbles down and then began flipping through the fourth year's file.
"It shows, Mr. Zeke," he praised, lifting up the latest progress report and nodding at it. "It truly shows. Top marks in Defense Against the Dark Arts, Charms, Potions, and Arithmancy...and Professor Dakest speaks quite highly of you. The only class you really seem to be struggling with is History of Magic...but even that has improved a little. Now that you are actually attending." Whether that meant better test scores or simply his participation grade was making the difference was not something the astronomer was sure of at the moment. "So...I assume that means you will be going for OWLs in Defense Against the Dark Arts, Charms, Potions, and Arithmancy then?"
Sticking to his strengths?
And really, no offense that Astronomy had not made the list. It all depended on what sort of future the boy saw for himself.

THAT was good, because he wasn't sure... and he WAS making efforts. How disheartening would it have been if in light of all of that he was still failing at school? Hmm? He wouldn't have been able to handle it. So progress of any measure, was a good thing in his eyes. Zeke remained still on his seat.
Top marks in DADA, Charms, Potions and Arithmancy wasn't a surprise to him. They were his favourite subjects also, so not doing his best in those was simply not an option. Admittedly though, it helped that his dad was a potioneer, and that his mum was just good at all things, especially DADA. What got him though, was that Sabel had spoken highly of him. He WANTED to reply by saying the man was obligated to do so... but he knew that was a lie. Sabel had been nothing but upfront with him. About everything. The man wouldn't lie to win his favour.
Nodding, Zeke continued to listen, waiting for a cue to speak.
HoM though... well that was a lost cause in his opinion, he was trying, and still struggling. Somehow what was said to be the objective of the lesson didn't compute with him and what was actually expressed during the sessions. He was lost.
But OWLs! "Yes, sir... and Runes, Transfiguration and Herbology... I'm not sure what else I might need." This is what he had difficulty determining.

Nodding his head along, the professor made a few scribbles on a piece of parchment and pursed his lips. There had been a few shortcomings this term in regards to Mr. Zeke and his behavior, but the young man was determined and very driven so there was not much room remaining to be too concerned. At least not for now. And with improvements all around, well, things were definitely looking good for him.
"Well, I can't see any reason why your entry to OWL level Defense Against the Dark Arts, Charms, Potions, Arithmancy, Transfiguration, or Herbology would be denied...and with Arithmancy taking up one of your elective classes you'll need one more to round out your course load," he mused while making more scribbles. "But that will all come down to what you see as being your long term goals. What do you see those as?" And he knew it was a big question to ask of someone so young, but even an inkling was worth looking into. "You are quite the gifted dueler," he continued, which came as no surprise to the man really. "Have you considered a career where you put those to skills to good use?"
Like becoming an Auror, perhaps?
Although perhaps working under his mother was not ideal. He could hardly blame the boy for not wanting that.

His gaze shifted between Professor Flamsteed's nodding to the parchment he was scribbling on. WHAT was he scribbling exactly??? Zeke scratched the back of his hand absentmindedly as he ticked off the subjects as Flamsteed spoke them. It pleased him, knowing he wouldn't be denied taking them, but... there was one that wasn't mentioned. "Runes? Will I be able to take Ancient Runes?" He was asking, because he needed it, and therefore NEEDED clarification. If he needed another elective, he would also consider CoMC, though he really didn't think he'd need it.
In line with that, were his long term goals, or at least... the goals he had set in recent times. It was hard, decided what path to take in life. He wasn't interested in ambling down one only to realise years later that he'd made the wrong decision, or that he sold himself short, or that he aimed too high and wasn't able to meet the mark. It was stressful. He opened his mouth to speak after a moment of framing his thoughts, only Professor Flamsteed's statement caught him off-guard.
Gifted dueler.
"Gifted?" he questioned instinctively. He thought that was a stretch, it was hardly a gift if he had worked hard for it. Right? As it was though, he HAD considered a career with such skills, but he had his uncertainties.
"Well, I've been thinking of a career as a Curse Breaker, and I went and spoke with Headmaster Botros about it too, to get a sense of what that might be like... with Runes..." he started, hoping this would show he was taking the process seriously enough, "aside from that I'm not really sure. I like charms, so my other thought was to be an Obliviator?"

Perhaps gifted was too broad of a term? Seemed to have invoked the wrong sort of reaction from the Gryffindor. Still, Airey nodded. "Or should I say a keen eye for strategy?" he qualified. "It is not, after all, simply about blasting one spell after the other. Dueling requires a lot of analytical thinking and instincts. Which, from my observations, you display quite nicely."
AHA! Well, that made a lot of sense. Not that the astronomer was anywhere near an expert on the profession and only knew what little details Daphne was willing to share. Which, needless to say, was not much. The man knew more about the proper care of felines than he did about curse breaking.
"If you have already spoken with the Headmaster about this, then I see no reason why you should not be approved for Owl level Ancient Runes," he chuckled. While not O level work until now, the boy had passing marks and then some, so if he had to the Head of House would vouch on the boy's behalf. But he sincerely doubted it would come to that. "I have a sister is a Curse Breaker, not for Gringotts however. She may be willing to speak with you about it as well should you ever find the need. Perhaps give you some hands on experience when you are old enough."
He could probably convince her of that. Not stop over for the Christmas holidays in return for the favor. She would probably fancy that option.
Although an internship at Gringotts would be more by the books. Really ought to have suggested that first.
"Along with other opportunities I am sure the Headmaster could arrange for you."
Old Man River was the Runes Man in the castle, naturally.

He would have LOVED the term gifted to be applied to him, but he felt it would have been dishonest, so when Professor Flamsteed revised his compliment he was okay with it. At least it was still a compliment, and a good one at that. "Thank you, Sir," was all he could really say in reply. He liked to think of himself as an ideas man, that he was capable of thinking on his feet and problem solving and being innovative... so if it showed in some small way with his duelling, then he was happy.
Zeke was still holding out for a response on Runes though, to be honest, he kind of had his heart set on it now. The response was positive. Zeke grinned, allowing himself to exhale the breath he had been holding onto. Why were talks of OWLs so stressful? Stress wasn't something he was accustomed to, and it was weird. Awful. But then, to his delight, good turned to better.
FLAMSTEED'S SISTER WAS A CURSE BREAKER?!
.....
He'd won the lottery. Jackpot. Access. This was all about access.
And on top of that, Botros could arrange opportunities for him too? Well that was news to his ears.
"Really? That... that would be appreciated, I mean, it'd be great.. valuable. Really. Thanks." All those good things, that's what it was. But he did have questions, so many questions. Deciding it would probably be inappropriate to demand contact with his sister NOW, and figuring he ought to wait before peppering the Headmaster with questions and demand, Zeke opted to explore the topic of careers and obtaining education a little further. He had his own contacts after all.
"One thing I'm not really sure of, Professor... is where do I go after I finish here? I mean, I know some jobs take us into entry level positions and we train as we go, like with Obliviators, so is this the same for Curse Breakers? Or is there a Uni course for excavation and things that we need to do before we can get employed?" All that Ancient History stuff, which he hopes was nothing like History of Magic stuff, because he might struggle.

Now he just had to convince his sister. He would rather take on an acromantula, to be honest. Still, he opened the boy's file and made a note to contact Daphne and ask. No doubt she would be doing something this summer that she could use some assistance on, right? Not that she ever shared what it was she ever did, save for explain some new scar that had appeared somewhere on her forearm.
"Well, I am not an expert on this particular field, but furthering your education at university is always a good place to start," he nodded. "For your particular field, I believe the Cairo campus would be the one best suited for training aspiring curse breakers, although each one of the Wizarding University campuses would be able to provide you with the background necessary. If it is anything like my experience, internships and apprenticeships would be things readily available to university studies to apply to." Scratching his head, the astronomer stared at a random spot on the table while he tried to recall what it was that Daphne had studied. He honestly had paid little attention to what his sisters had been doing academically, being far more interested in furthering his own career.
Looked like that was coming back to bite in him the rear, yeah?
"When I speak my sister next, I can ask her to share her story with you," he nodded.
Had she even attended university? Something told him that she had only attended a year before just going off and doing her own thing. Very unconventional, Daphne was.

Somehow his ducks were beginning to line up neatly. He had his subjects outlined. He had contacts he could confer with. And it all sounded.... achievable. He was going to do this. He was really going to do this, maybe.
Talk of University had him arching his brows a little. CAIRO?!
He had no plans to study abroad. It was... far from everything he knew. Everyone he knew.
Zeke wasn't naive to think everything would stay the same between now and then, but somehow he couldn't envisage leaving the country either. He just got back (technically)! Still, he nodded. Cairo. Egypt. Best for Curse Breaking - and no surprise really, it made sense. And really, in the grand scheme of things, he would be travelling anyway. So going abroad wouldn't be a temporary change for him, it would be... permanent.
There was a lot to process.
He was okay with that too, but time would tell the rest. "Excellent, awesome... thank you again, Professor." Zeke REALLY wanted to talk to the man's sister now. REALLY. But... was that it for them then? "Was there anything else?" that needed to be discussed? Or was that all the planning of his future that was required?

If the Gryffindor thought that that had been a lot to process, then he should be thankful that he was not pursuing a career in astronomy. Not yet at least. But the man was not daft enough to think that Mr. Zeke would honestly change his mind THAT much and essentially turn a 180. No, this Gryffindor was the sort that once he set his mind to something he went all in until it was achieved.
Or so he came off to the man. Who knew what teenage angst would do to the young man.
"No no, that will be all. Unless you have anything else on your mind, I believe we can call this meeting adjourned and a success."
Now came the task of speaking with Daphne and trying to convince her to do him this favor....and not get one of his students killed int he process.
