The windows are open and a crisp fall breeze is blowing through the Arithmancy classroom in preparation for another day of learning. Professor Domingo, clad in earth tones to match the season, stands near the front of the room shuffling her notes to be organized and ready for today. A notice is written on the chalkboard in her handwriting: "Take out the list of three people I asked you to prepare and set it on your desk."
OOC: You may RP chatting, but please nothing excessive. The lesson will begin in a few hours.

Did that answer the Ravenclaw's (carpediem) question from earlier?
"Today we will be dealing with the first of the four, the Life Path calculation." She flicked her wand and the definition from the textbook appeared on the board.
"But before we can dive in, I wonder if I could have three volunteers who have already taken at least a year of Arithmancy?"
......... numbers.
He didn't like numbers and this lesson was already scaring him. In a weird way though, he imagined Arithmancy to be linked with Divination... and Divination wasn't so bad. At least Professor Cassie was nice.
Still, he listened and TRIED his best to understand. It was hard though, because numbers had a way of confusing him. Ugh. Long lesson. He FELT like this was going to be a long long lesson.
He added some notes to his parchment and then waited for the volunteers to do.. whatever it is they were going to do...

She waited for them to make their way forward before she began to explain their task. "I have put three numbers--," she flicked her wand once more, "--on the board. Please each pick one and demonstrate the reduction method."
"Everyone else, please practice on your parchment if you already know the method." It would be a good review for those returning to the subject this year.
He didn't know the method, no, so he was just going to copy from the board and HOPE and PRAY that it made sense and he wouldn't have to ask the Professor for help. Because he wouldn't. He'd rather suffer in silence. She'd probably take points from him just because he was stupid... she seemed mean enough.
But back to his notes.
Zeke inked his quill again, and then added to his parchment the notes that were written up on the board.
Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Samantha bit her lip and furrowed her brow ever so slightly as she worked out the reduction numbers. She took out her quill and parchment and began writing.
Another muggle. But this time a Latina! "Ah, sí, I am familiar with the work of Elisa Cabrera." Only slightly, but she had heard of the woman before. "Admirable character," she said, nodding.
She nodded and smiled at the professor, actually a little too joyful that she knew about Elisa. "Definitely, admirable." She said the last word, in her full Spanish accent.
But now, it was time to work.
Paloma looked down at her book, then the board, then at her notes. Was this confusing or what? She wasn't really into searching more into her own life, it was quite confusing as she could tell, feel.

Reduction method? That was easy! Caleb was glad that Domingo was taking it easy on them to start off the lesson - after the summer, Caleb was pretty sure his brain was NOT on arithmancy adding mode right now.
So he scribbled down his notes on his parchment and then admired his work. Yup, looked good to him. Yay mental math!

Welp. He had made it this far without a headache, but then again.. They really just got started with this number stuff so it was only about time. And of course all the volunteers were hufflepuffs. It was just one of those expected things. Besides, he could hardly imagine someone like Zahra trying to up there and reduce those numbers.
Anyways, he refrained from letting out an exasperated sigh and looked down at his blank parchment. Well, here goes nothing!

Angel looked at her piece of paper as the Professor told her what to do. She looked at the volunteers. They all seemed to be Hufflepuff which in some ways she found funny but for now she had her own work that needed doing.
Though Angel was a bit confused was she supposed to practice the numbers on the board on her parchment or make some up. In the end she decided to practice the numbers on the board and hope that it was the right thing to do.

Hadleigh glanced around to see everyone else working. Most of them were already finished and she hadn't even began. Was she really the only one that had no clue what she was supposed to do? Even some of the other first years like herself were writing down something...this couldn't be good. Chewing on her lower lip she sat back in her seat and slumped down into it just a bit.
First lesson in Arithmancy and already she was behind. She took out another piece of parchment and stared at it for a long moment. Slowly she wrote down the three numbers on the board but nothing more.

Adi happned to be glancing around at the others as he was all done with his calculations and whatnot when he happed to notice a young girl looking lost. He had not doubt what was bugging her. Maybe he could help out?
"Hi. Need help?" Adi peered into her parchment. Of course she did. See? There were no calculations there. "Okay. Let's work on the first number. All you have to do is add each number together. Adding them all together we get 8. Since it's a single digit, we leave it at that. But for the second one we get 14. So what we do is add 1 and 4. We get 5, a single digit. There are exceptions to this rule but do you understand what we've done so far?''

Lifting her head at the voice she saw there was an older boy beside her. A Prefect to be exact and a nice one asking her if she needed his help. Hady nodded her head at his question. Yes she could use some help she hadn't written down anything at all on her parchment other then the numbers.
As he explained what to do she looked at the parchment to see if it all made sense. It did. Hearing him explaining it all and writing down what he'd said onto her parchment helped her to see that so far it wasn't as hard as she'd thought it would be. "Yes, it seems easy enough now. What would the exceptions be though?" Would that be the part that would confuse her?

Awesome! The girl seemed to be getting the hang of things. It wasn't that hard really but Adi totally understood her bewilderment to the activity. She was just a firstie. Or a second year.
"It's not that much so don't worry about it.'' Adi grinned. "Just a little something to remember about the numbers 11, 22 and 33. See here for the last set of numbers. When we add them we get 22, double digits. But we don't reduce it to single digit because it's one of the Master Numbers. Um, I'm not exactly sure why they're called that but that's the way it is.''
Was everything clear? Adi hoped so. He had explained as best as he could. "If you need help again, just ask. Adi's the name.''

That didn't seem so hard to remember. The way he had explained it made it sound easy and she thought that she'd be able to get it on her own now. "It kind of makes sense now. I don't get the whole 'Master Number' thing but I think I get the idea of how this works at least."
Grabbing her quill once more she began to write in her work and the answers to each problem. "Thanks Adi, I'm Hady." She smiled softly quite thankful for his help and that it wasn't as hard as she'd expected it to be.

Maybe it was a branch of Arithmancy that wasn't yet fully developed and could be dismissed as soon as the next findings reared their ugly heads. Which reminded her, quills were such a weird thing to use. Why was everything so backwards at this place? Was there really anything wrong with pen and paper because it would make her life SO much easier.
The Ravenclaw for one was relieved that she had studied Arithmancy over the summer because otherwise she would've had no idea what she was doing. She had the textbook open anyway on the correct page just for backup should she need it. But Layla was always good at maths and she had a lot of confidence in herself that she would be able to do the task at hand and weirdly she was looking forward to the rest of the lesson. She assumed that it wasn't the same for everyone else. Very few people enjoyed arithmetic.

Arithmancy Lesson 1 - Core numbers
What is a core number?
A set of four numbers or calculations used to find more out about yourself. Can be used to discover more about your soul and the path in which you can take in the future.
Reduction Method
Method in which a number is reduced to a single digit by adding all the components in a number e.g.
152 -
1 + 5 + 2 = 8
734 -
7 + 3 + 4 = 14
1 + 4 = 5
967 -
9 + 6 + 7 = 22
2 + 2 = 4
She sat back and quickly inspected her work staring at the bottom one. Something wasn't quite right here. She tilted her head and then referenced to her textbook as the number 22 jumped out at her.
Oh THAT was it! 22 was a MASTER number. She corrected her work very swiftly.

Lolita perused parchments as she made her way around the room. It looked like most of her former students had not completely emptied their brains over the summer holiday, at least. There were, of course, several new students that could not come up with anything. Expected, obviously. Also expected was the most common mistake: forgetting about the Master Number. She made a mental note to mention it.

It appeared that this particular young Slytherin was either anxious to learn or anxious to not appear stupid in front of others. And like a typical Hufflepuff, Mister Rehman had jumped in and done Lolita's job. Did he really think she wouldn't explain the process, that she would be that lazy and neglectful? Although... he did save me the trouble of having to deal with the girl..."Mister Rehman, thank you for taking the initiative to help a classmate. Two points to Hufflepuff." Saving her work trumped the personal slight any day.

...
............... oh. Ah.
Right.
They had to do brain things. BUT THAT WAS OKAY. Reduction was a pretty basic part of Arithmancy, and Toby was moderately certain that he remembered what it was.
They were demonstrating this on the board, yes? Okay. He picked the last one and got to work.
A couple of crossing things out, like that little incorrect calculation, and then the part where he'd almost forgotten about it being a master number and not reduced. And THEN he'd been a bit iffy on how to present it, and so reduced anyway to show how to GET to that master number. Things were crossed out and rewritten a couple of times, but there. He'd done it. Hopefully. Right?
After crossing out his crossed out things even MORE so it was more clear which parts you were supposed to be looking at (and thanking his lucky stars that his writing was legible), the Hufflepuff bounced slightly on the spot and turned to look at Domingo, moving out of the way slightly so she could see his work.

As the three volunteer students finished, she finally checked over what they had done, nodding in the process. "Sí, estudiantes. Muy bueno. You may take a seat," she told them. "A small round of applause in thanks for our volunteers please, clase." She put her hands together appreciatively.
"The reduction method, as demonstrated, involves adding together each digit of a number," she said, beginning another circuit around the room. "If the sum of those digits is a single digit, you have reached the end of the reduction. If, however, the sum is a double digit, you must repeat the process by adding together each digit."
She made her way back up to the board and pointed at what the volunteers had done. "For 152, you add together 1, 5, and 2 to get 9. That is a single digit, so 152 reduces down to 9." Easy enough. "Now for 734, you add 7, 3, and 4 to get 14; since 14 is a double digit number, you add its digits once more. Therefore 734 reduces down to 5, the sum of 1 plus 4."
That just left the part that most people were missing. "There are three special numbers called the Master Numbers. They are 11, 22, and 33. If, at any point in the reduction, you get a sum of 11, 22, or 33, you stop and use it as your answer." She moved to point at the last reduction. "You can see here that Mister Tempus arrived at 22 in his calculation and, though it is a double digit, did not reduce it further to 4." Well, he did, but also indicated that 22 was the correct answer and a Master Number.
"Preguntas, estudiantes? What questions do you have?" If there were none, she would move on to the Life Path calculation.

Ian clapped in a perfunctory manner, as directed by meaning Mcmeanprofessor. This class was going to be just as dull as he had expected (which was why the hufflepuff had not chosen to attend previously).
He listened to her summaries of the answers and then saw the question he had. Why didn't that boy reduce further. It seemed odd that in the other to numbers he'd reduced to single digits and yet with 22 he had not. Then the professor asked if students had questions. Ian looked around and didn't see anyone else asking a question, so he raised his hand.
Professor. What are master numbers? Obviously, the numbers she had listed were it, but that didn't explain WHY they were master numbers and Ian was confused a little. He had copied the responses from the volunteers along with some notes, but now he needed to know what a master number was and it's purpose in Arithmancy.

Questions? The Gryffindor had several, like why this class was still on the curriculum and what it would possibly do to get her a pampered life in the future but alas, these probably weren't the questions the woman had in mind so she simply sat there patiently and waited for others to voice their concerns. After seven years, there weren't many questions she had left regarding this subject. Master numbers were explained maybe a million times since her first year and so was reduction. She could have stayed in her dorm and passed this class.

Questions? She had none. Layla had correctly worked out the calculations and therefore she could just sit back and listen right? Or wait. And hopefully no one else would have any questions because that would mean that the lesson dragged on for longer. There was always that one student in class who kept the teacher going just when you thought you might get out early. In muggle school that one child was disliked, here they were probably encouraged what with all these posh kids.
The blonde felt no need to add any more notes into her work as she had already explained everything well on her parchment. She looked around during the brief pause until some student poked up his hand to ask a question. She inwardly sighed and resisted the urge to roll her eyes.
Quite frankly she just wanted to get down to the nitty-gritty stuff. Weirdly Layla enjoyed calculations and this waiting around and explaining stuff was getting a little too tedious for her liking.
Zahra cheered LOUD for those HUFFLEPUFFS volunteers. "WOO WOO WOOP! TOBY MARI AND OTHER GIRL FOR ARITHMANCY CLASS PRESIDENT!" Yeah yeah cool, then she took some NOTES.
SPOILER!!: Zahra's notes

Reason: I put an M and not a Z and Z's name is ZAHRA not MAHRA you see.
Well, see? SEE? He'd reduced that 22 in brackets 'cause in his BOOK (so he thought he could remember) master numbers were always written down with a slash and then what the number would have been if it WAS reduced. There was logic behind Toby's reasoning, even if he didn't think to really point it out.
On his way back to his seat, Toby grinned and had to hold back a snort of laughter at ZAHRA'S antics. If he'd needed to pass her seat on the way back, Toby would have high-fived her. But alas, the high five would have to wait for another day.
Now at his seat, Toby quickly wrote down the reductions for each of the numbers right there in his notes, as well as a little bit of what the professor was saying. Well... as much as he could REMEMBER her saying before his memory and focus had decided to wander off for a nice stroll.
Okay. Cool. HE WAS COOL. HE WAS READY. BRING IT ON.

He got the funny feeling now, that just as he wasn't pleased with HER, SHE wasn't pleased with him... to the point where he felt ignored. This was, a good thing... and maybe a bad thing if he was to get the lesson stuff right. He still wanted to get it right. How was he supposed to be the bestest wizard of all time if he couldn't add up numbers?
...
Ugh.
With her explanation though, it did become obvious that it really was just a matter of adding numbers together. But what HE wanted to know, was how they got those numbers in the first place. Hoooowwwww? ... Zeke raised his hand to ask, but thought better of it and put it back down, averting his eyes to his parchment.
Nope. He'd wait, she'd HAVE to tell them eventually if they were going to work these out. So no, he'd wait, not ask... no asking. He was shutting up.

"No problem, Professor,'' Adi said, now back on his seat and pretending to concentrate on his calculations. Helping the young Snake had been nothing and he had not been looking forward to points. Not that he wasn't glad about them.
Anyway. The lesson was continuing. Adi glanced at the young girl he had just assisted. She would have a better understanding now that Domingo was explaining too. And she would better understand Master Numbers.

Jasmine was pleased that she had remembered how to complete her reductions. Maybe this year things would start to click for her in Arithmancy. Last year she'd gotten a lot of things right, but wasn't always quite sure how she had done it. She was hoping that this would be the year of enlightenment.
Now they were ready to move on.....after questions. Nope. Jasmine did not have any questions. She took a moment to reflect on what she had learned in previous classes.

Look at her man getting points for helping a student. Adi was a helpful person in general. She shot him a smile. Helping out a firstie was super cool. AJ listened to the professor go over the reduction method. Crap, she had forgotten about 22 being a master number. The lion jotted down some notes about the master number that she could reference next time.
Ian had the same question that AJ had, so she waited to see what the professor had to say. Other than that she was good to go.
Angel looked at the Professor and decided just to sit there since she had no questions. She couldn't wait to see what was going on and why the Professor had wanted them to bring a list of three people who had inspired them.

Having already taken some detailed notes the first year didn't have anything to write down at the moment. Setting her quill down she listened in silence to what the Professor was explaining to them all.
Did she have any questions? No not anymore. She had a few minutes ago but thanks to Adi's help she no longer did. Folding her hands on her lap Hady remained quiet and waited for the lesson to continue.
