Default Astronomy Lesson 2 :: Polaris

Entering the Astronomy classroom you see Professor Flamsteed standing dancing his own version of the moonwalk and humming some nonsensical tune. Perhaps he is doing all this to attempt to keep warm as there is a brisk December chill in the classroom? The ridiculously goofy grin on his face may imply otherwise. Hard to be so happy about the cold after all. The telescopes that are usually around the classroom for student use are now gone thanks to those greedy goblins, but they thankfully left your desks and chairs - which are still in Professor Flamsteed's preferred semi circle formation. There are no covered objects this time around, just the empty blackboard and a rather large rolled up piece of parchment leaning against it.

Come on in and have a seat - or join the professor in dancing. We are pretty sure he won't mind.
Lesson Progression
question 1 :: You're lost in the Forbidden Forest...WHATDOYOUDO?!
question 2 :: Why Polaris out of all the stars?
question 3 :: What other constellations may we see in the December night sky?
activity 1 :: Oculo Focalis practice
activity 2 :: stargazing activity
activity update :: class will be ending "soon"

OOC: Don't worry! Your time conversion skills are not wonky. I DID open the tread up early. Please be sure you are familiar with Professor Flamsteed's rules BEFORE you post in this lesson. We will know if you haven't read them! All SnitchSeeker site rules apply.

THIS LESSON HAS OFFICIALLY STARTED. Please do not post your character arriving late and simply pretend as if you have been here all along.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Jory now stood back about fifteen paces from where his poster was stuck. He had good eyesight, but he knew that compared to certain animals especially hawks, eagles and falcons, human eyesight was very...primitive.

He looked at the chart. He could see from lines one all the way to seven. He could make out a bit of eight if he squinted. And as for line nine, what he saw seemed to be little specks. That's the power of human eyes. Jory couldn't wait to use the charm! He had to be careful not to poke an eye out, though.

Natalie headed for her desk to take her wand while repeating the spell in her head. Oculus Focalis, she thought. Or was it Ochullus Focalis? Either way, she has to memorise it, because she has to perform the spell with both eyes closed.

Oculus Focalis, Oculus Focalis, Oculus Focalis. Swish and tap. Swish and tap. Swish and tap. Oculus Focalis.

She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and started. She swished her wand, tapped her right eyelid (a bit too hard, she winced a bit), and said, "Oculus Focalis." Nat is still frightened that she will not do the spell correctly, as she isn't very good at it. But . . . .

"Whoaaaaaa..."

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

The first letter was easily seen, the first couple lines were easily seen. Things only started getting difficult when she hit line 7. That's when she had to start squinting in the hopes of making the letters clearer. Now she had to admit that she'd hit her limit. Merlin's beard! Were those even letters in lines 8 and 9??

They had to be because all the others were but she couldn't see--Ooooo, this meant she could use the spell now, right???

She was practically bouncing at this...okay, okay, she was bouncing at this. Telescope!eyes and they'd be epic!!!

Oculo Focalis.

This spell would probably go a lot better if she was standing still...yeah...it would....It'd have been a shame if she ended up poking her eye out by accident. If they weren't in her head anymore they wouldn't be epic...well actually they would be because they'd still be hers but that was besides the point! "Oculo Focalis...Ocu-lo Fo-ca-lis...O-cu-lo Focal-is"

Just getting it right first.

A charm to put on your eyes? Aw heeeeeell no... Theo gasped a little, because his eyes were precious, but Professor Flamsteed confirmed that it wouldn't do any harm. Other than making them red and sore, which to Theo, was actual harm but whatever. He figured that if he did do this spell correctly, it would be pretty darn cool.

His ears perked up when the eyesight board was introduced.

Theo knew what they were, so he felt to a sudden advantage to everyone else, even if it made no difference at all. He stood way back and had a good look. Well, he had the first five lines down in a snap of the finger, but it was the ones below that needed a little more focussing. Theo squinted his eyes and managed to read all the letters from the sixth line, too, but the ones underneath that were difficult.

You know, this kinda reminded him to make an appointment at the opticians. It'd been like... five years?

Theo didn't make a fuss of his inability to read the last three lines, but instead, he pulled out his wand and focussed on the charm that they were learning. Oculo Focalis. GREAT, it was one of those mouthful-spells that Theo hated soooo much.

"sorry..."

Nat didn't meant for it to be that loud. But the effects of the spell was pretty awesome. She can see every single detail of the fabric everyone's using, also the small specks of dust suspended in the air, glinting from the light. The difference between her right eye and her left frightened her, and she kept closing one eye then changing to the other eye to compare them. After she is satisfied with her right eye, she charmed her other eye to complete the feeling, and the wonders had just started.

EVERYTHING is clear. She looked at her poster, still working on believing that her eyes can see every single fibre on the poster. Every slightly crumpled edges, a chipped side that measures about one centimetre that would've only been seen if using a hand-lens, and a very small oil stain on one special edge. She walked backwards away from the poster, slowly, occasionally looking back to see if she had knocked over something or someone. When her back hit the other wall opposite to her poster with a small thud, she still can see every single letter printed on it, even the very last line.

If my eyes can focus something that small from that distance, Nat said to herself, then can it focus on something that's even farther? After all, that's what the charm is for...

Nat ran to the nearest window and peeked outside. And she couldn't even say anything. She had just seen a sky with the most stars EVER at a time. Compared to this, the stars she sees in her small home town feels like nothing.

She kept staring at the sky for the next five minutes. Being her too-excited self, she had just realised that her eyes felt very tired after all the focusing and the stargazing. As she slid down to her desk, she put her cold hands on her face, closing her eyes and resting them.

And she is still working on believing the things she had seen.

As Nigel thought. Flamsteed had no idea who The Doctor was or wanted to know by the way he was looking at him. Nigel almost laughed at his blank look he gave him. Priceless and he did ask what Trenzalore was.

To test out this eye spell that was suppose to tickle your eyes. Seemed pretty awesome. He did want to see how much better his eye sight gets with this spell and if it is better than using a telescope. Nigel got up and went slowly to pick an eye chart. Once he completed the meaningless task. He walked over to an empty wall and place it there.

Nigel took the necessary steps back and was now ready to try this Telescope Focusing Charm

Okay, enough with the incantation practice! Time to actually get some casting done. She took a deep breath, her eyes shut and her wand ready. The important thing to remember was there needed to be focus and intent--oh and it helped to remember that she wouldn't totally damage her eyes if she were to get this wrong. Yeah...that helped a lot.

"Oculo Focalis!"

Slowly, she opened her eyes.

Blink. Blink. Well this felt weird...She blinked a few more times, just trying to get the hang of it before turning to the poster again. Everything looked closer and clearer, jgdugfddj, like legit!! She was even seeing lines 8 and 9 clearly, EEeeeeeeeeppppp!!! Now she wanted to see everything, to just STARE and look at stuff and wonder how different they'd look so close.

Oooooo...

Such nice things and they all looked within reach. There was a point or two were she actually reached out think the object was close enough. This was awesome. Nodnodnod.

Nigel looked around for a couple minutes before he performed the spell to watch if anyone poked their eye out using the spell. It was possible and it would have been hilarious. Well from what Nigel saw everyone had a good handle on it. So here we go.

Nigel simply swished his wand and followed it by a simple tap on his closed eyelids."Oculo Focalis". Nigel opened his eyes and noticed everything was a little to close for him. He would rather keep his eyes closed then continue using it. Though this had many awesome possibilities.

Fun was one of them. Nigel looked around and noticed all the little thing that you would have never noticed before without this spell or a portable microscope. Wow. Everything is a lot dirtier than before. You can even see all the lint that Flamsteed missed. He felt like superman. Next he would need x-ray vision and the ability to fly. But right now he had one of his powers. And it was AWESOME!!. Wonder if there is a spell for superman's powers. Nigel would have to research that after this class.

Nigel supposed he should be getting back to the eye chart now. Which was definitely not as awesome as pretending to be superman.

Poor Pluto is right. Ella frowned a little and looked up at the sky thoughtfully. She was still totally Team Pluto, okay? Waving her flag proudly forevz.

Ohhhh. An eyesight chart? Ella knew what this was! She'd been to the eye doctor's loads of times, especially with Gran. The blonde smiled a little, ready to use it.

Grabbing a chart, the sixteen year old stuck it to the wall and stood a good distance away. She then placed a hand over her left eye just like she'd done at the doctor's. Alrightttttttttttt. She could totally see all the letters clearly up until line 7. That's when things started getting blurry and Ella found herself squinting a bit.

She did the same thing again, only this time covering her right eye to test her vision. She got the same results too. It seemed that line 7 and on were just a little too tough for her to see.

Now to practice the spell...

Marigold blinked slowly. A charm to see things closer? Seemed simple enough, though she was a bit nervous about doing it wrong. Putting off her spell work, she tried to see the bottom rows of the poster. She squinted, but couldn't make the letters out. Sighing, she pulled out her wand to practice the spell.

And now it was back to the students whose hands were popping up all over the classroom.

"Very good, Mr. Lecium! Pegasus can indeed be seen tonight as well." And on to the list it went.

Alright. Enough talk and theory. Time to get down to the good stuff.

"We will spend the rest of the lesson doing just that, finding Polaris and its surrounding constellations and a few other celestial bodies." Like planets. "However, to do so I had intended on you all using telescopes as some of the planets and constellations may be very hard to see with the naked eye. Unfortunately....those were repossessed recently by goblins, so we are going to have to go with plan B." WHICH WAS SO MUCH MORE LEGENDARY THAN TELESCOPES.

"Older students may be familiar with the Telescope Focusing Charm, Lens Focalis. We will be using a variation of that charm today..." Pause for effect. "On our own eyes." Pretty cool, huh? "The wand movement is the same, a simple swish followed by a tap on your closed eyelids. The incantation is Oculo Focalis. First years and those who are uncomfortable with charmswork should not be worried. You will not harm your eyesight by not performing the spell properly." So breathe kids. Breeeeeeeeathe. "One word of caution. Extended use of this spell WILL cause tiredness and red eyes. Sort of think of how one looks after not sleeping properly. Bags under the eyes is also a common side effect."

The professor then tapped his desk and summoned a stack of posters from the drawer when he then levitated around the classroom.
SPOILER!!: the poster

"You may work alone or with a partner to practice the charm. What I want you to do first is to test your eyesight using this muggle eye chart. OOC: Just as Professor Flamsteed said, you can do this activity alone or pair up with someone else. For full credit you should have a minimum of 3 posts. Remember that this charm will not cause any serious eye damage. Your character MAY experience a slight burning sensation or tiredness in the eyes, but nothing too extreme.

Please number your posts to make it easier for me. Pretty please with a cherry on top?

I will hopefully post the second part of the activity tomorrow morning GMT+9 before I have to take my little man to the hospital for his shots, but you will still be allowed to continue this activity if you have not completed it so don't worry

Kace was happy he got the right constellation for the teacher. He was beaming and then he saw the professor handing out the eye charts for the activity. Awesome they were going to something practical!

He copied down the charm down it was, Oculo Focalis. The wand movement was a simple swish and tap on the eyelids. Then he heard he shouldn't be worried and was reliefed. He was quite worry since he was a firstie.

SPOILER!!: Kace's Notebook

Oculo Focalis
Wand Movement: A simple swish and tap on eyelids.

He put his eye chart on the wall near his desk and covered his left eye with his hand and started to test out his eyes. He took a couple steps back and could definitely see the E on top with no problem. Then he saw the F, P on the second line and the TOZ on the third line. He was feeling confident. Plus he always had perfect eyes on his doctors exams back in the muggle world.

He tried the 8 and 9th lines. He had to strain his right eye to read it. It was quite hard but he could make out the other letters. He could read the 8th line no problem.

The 9th line seemed hard. He seemed like he was guessing a lot. He covered his right eye and tried it again. It was even more blurry in his left eye. He was squinting even harder.

But that is why the teacher taught them the charm. He would try using it soon.

Okay. Oculo Focalis shouldn't be too hard to master. Ella decided to work on the incantation first and get that down. "Oculo Focalis...Oculo Focalis...Oculo Focalis....Oculo Focalis..." She knew Airey said they wouldn't mess up their eyesight or anything but she still wanted to be cautious. She needed her eyes for Quidditching reasons, obviously. Besides, she quite liked being able to see.

Next was the wand movement. A slight swish and a tap on closed eyelids, yeah? She could handle that. Swish and tap. Swish and tap. Swish and tap.

She was ready. Sort of. Oh Merlin, please let this work.

Ella held up her wand, closed her eyes and said, "Oculo Focalis!" Swish and tap!

...Did it work? Her eyes felt a bit different but she'd need to check the chart again to be sure.

"One constellation in particular that was not mentioned but I would like you to remember is Cepheus. It is the fifth constellation of the five circumpolar constellations and named after Cepheus, King of Aethiopia in Greek mythology."

Turning to look at the board for a moment to look over the list, he gave it a reaffirming nod and then turned back to the class. Information... lots of information was being given out. And Alec was just scribbling away in his jour-

WOAH WOAH WOAH. HOLD THE SNITCH.

They were going to use a spell on their eyes? The boy reached up and ruffled his hair. Sure, the spell was meant to be more or less harmless but... Astro Man said something about the spell causing tiredness and red eyes and bags and... they had a MATCH coming up. And he needed to be able to SEE the Snitch, you know. Properly. With eyes that weren't tired.

Frowning slightly, Alec grabbed hold of a poster and walked over towards an empty spot on the wall. He stuck the poster up before taking a couple of steps backwards. ... And then a couple more. And a couple more. There. His grey-blue eyes scanned the list and he tried to read the letters on the chart. Most of the lines were read more or less easily but the bottom two... squiiiiint... the bottom two, especially the last line, required more careful thought as to what letters each shape looked like. Like that one there. Was that an O or a Q?

... This... wasn't good. But did this mean that he could practice the spell now?

Well she had thought it was a valid question anyway. She was a little saddened by how angry he got for her asking, especially after seeing him jump up and on and be so excited for everyone else. It was a good question! But at least he gave her an answer. She did appreciate that much. But hey...he didn't add the hydrus to the list like I said! Does that mean it's wrong? She wanted to ask but didn't want to bother him any further, so she let it go, because they were going to TURN THEIR EYES INTO TELESCOPES-WHAT?!

This was beyond exciting. She could use this any time now! But that thought made her worry. So...won't all these boys be using their telescope eyes to spy on the girls now? She looked around at all of them suspiciously. Well, no one was going to look at her anyway, but she did want to keep a look out for her friends' privacy. She'd be vigilant about this. Having telescope eyes might help her out in other places too - like if she really could get some people who wanted to go on a nature walk or something, to somewhere. Hmmmm...

She went and stood about fifteen or so paces from the chart and tried to read it without the spell. It wasn't all that hard except for the bottom few lines. Her eyesight was pretty good actually, so maybe she'd have to back up more. She went over the incantation in her mind before casting. Oculo ....Fo-ca-lis. Oculo Focalis, oculo focalis...

Kace was about the start pronouncing the charm and practice the wand movements now. He needed to perfect this because he didn't want to alter his eyes or anything. They were already in perfect condition and he wanted to keep it that way.

He looked at his notebook again and saw it the incantation. Oculo Focalis, well that shouldn't be too hard. He practiced saying the spell first. He started saying "Oc-u-lo Fo-ca-lis...Oc-u-lo Fo-ca-lis.....Oc-u-lo Fo-ca-lis...Oc-u-lo Fo-ca-lis."

He got that down now to put it together! "Oculo Focalis...Oculo Focalis....Oculo Focalis...Oculo Focalis...Oculo Focalis." Yay! He was getting the hang of it. Now onto the wand movement. It was a simple swish and tap on the eyes. He swished his wand and tapped his eyes playfully.

Now he needed to feel confident. He took a deep breath and concentrated and said the spell right one more time. He had his wand ready in his hand and said with a swish "Oculo Focalis!" and a tap on his eyes, and he felt some tingly feeling on his eyes. He wasn't sure if it worked.

He was going to check it on the eye chart right now. He got up from his desk and faced the chart to see if his spell worked.

The second year Slytherin blinked a few times with her eyes, she was disorientated because her eyes were suddenly so… everything seemed different! She tried to look around her, but it was so confused to see everything different than how she used to see the things! But, after a few minutes she became accustomed to her new view and looked more observant around her. She looked at the ground and around her, she saw a few cobwebs above her and she shivered, but the cobwebs were far away from her so she was not too scared about them. Next she looked at the muggle poster to test her eyes.

The first list was easy, she would have been able to see it even when her eyes were normal and when she had been standing FAR away from the poster. The young girl looked further and noted that she could see everything, she could read everything she saw on the poster, even the smallest letters were easy to read! She made a mental note to remember this spell so that she could use it in her free time to do all sorts of things, it was always good to know a spell like this! Especially when she wanted to spy on somebody! not that she wanted to spy on somebody, but… it was good to know this spell, just in case…

Back to the chart.

Ella blinked several times and then her green eyes widened slightly. She could see. SHE COULD SEE THE ENTIRE CHART! It was all really clear too. No squinting and no moving closer necessary. BEAM. This was brilliant.

Just to make sure, the blonde backed wayyyyyyyyy away from the chart and tilted her head. GRIN. She could still see it clearly! It was really a shame that she couldn't do this spell on Gran. The older woman could totally benefit from something like this. The whole extended use warning was playing in the back of her mind, though. She didn't fancy giving her Gran red eyes and bags underneath. That wouldn't be good. Nope.

Anywhoo...what did they do now? Bounce.

This one needed a ton of practice, mainly because Theo was extra paranoid about hurting his precious eyes. It didn't matter what Professor Flamsteed had said, he didn't trust his own magical capability, so caution was inevitable. He put his wand down for a moment, to do what he usually did first - getting the extremely long words down.

Oculo Focalis.

Pfft... stupid name.

Theo said it a couple of times in his head, spelling each syllable out and all that, and now it was time for actual pronouncing. "Oc-u-lo Fo-ca-lis." When he said it like that, it didn't even seem like a lot, but it was a kind of tongue twister. "Ocu-lo Foca-lis." He said again with a nod.

How could he be sure that this was gonna work?

Could he practice on someone else's eyes before going on his own? UGGGGGHHHH.... "Oculo Focalis!" It sounded right but eh, maybe it wasn't. He didn't know.

Alec shuffled backwards a couple more steps before looking back at the chart. There. That would be better for the spell experiment practice activity.

And speaking of the spell, he should practice saying it first, yeah? Oculo Focalis... Oculo Focalis... Oculo Focalis... "O-cu-lo... Fo-ca-lis..." Was that right? Yeah? No? Or was it more... "Oc-u-lo... Fo-ca-lis? O-cu-lo... Fo-ca-lis... Oc-u-lo Fo-ca-lis..." Was there a way to find out which way was the better way to pronounce this word? Because both ways sounded right to him...

Okay... maybe... he should move on to the wand movement instead? Swish and a tap on the closed eyelid. That sounded scary. The tap on the closed eyelid bit. Swishing was okay but... well... he wasn't exactly confident enough to have his wand going near his eyes. Yeah... that was a good way of putting it.

Swish and tap... swish and tap... He moved his wand around to swish in front of his eyes before giving his closed eyelid a small tap. ... That... wasn't too bad. Swish... tap... swish... tap...

Now it was just time to put the two together, yeah?

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

"Oculo Focalis, Oculo Focalis, Oculo Focalis, Oculo Focalis, Oculo Focalis!'' Jory kept repeating the spell, getting the pronunciation right. It sounded alright to him, like how Professor Airey had said it. Right? Anyway, the wand movement wasn't a complicated one.

But Jory was still a tad bit apprehensive about tapping his eye lid. Well, he had to give it a try. "Oculo Focalis!'' With a swish an then a tap on the closed eyelid with his wand. He opened his eyes and blinked. Did it work?

The Puffer focused on the chart once again. It did! He stared at it in amazement. It was as it he were standing really close up to the chart! He could even read the tiny letters of the last line. How cool!

Theo repeated the incantation over and over in his head and out loud, for a further five minutes, until he was 100% sure that it was glued in his brain. He still wasn't keen on the spell, though. Oculo Focalis. Easy enough.
PHHHHEWWWWW!BREATHE. He picked up his wand and positioned himself in front of the eyesight chart again so that he was standing far away enough. Theo pointed his wand at his eyes and...

And....

AND.....

"Oc-ccc-ccc..."

Nope, can't do it.

He dropped his wand on the ground and stared blankly at it for a moment. Did he mean to drop it like that? It seemed to be his hands trying to tell him something. Errrrr, probably telling him to never EVER to point wands at eyes. Theo picked it up and checked all around him to see if anyone saw.

Airey's brow twitched in agitation. "If you are going to look something up I suggest you use your textbook, Mr. Stark," he said while flicking his wand and levitating it in the boy's face to the constellation section. "Minus 5 points for not only wandering severely off topic, but for not paying attention in class."

Looking around to see if there were anymore hands in the air, which there were not, he stepped aside from the board and tapped it with his wand to draw attention to it. "I would like you all to now please take a look at the board. Please note that this list is by no means complete and there are still many constellations visible in tonight's sky that no one mentioned. I will add just a few more of those to the list."

"Now, as we have already discussed, Polaris is our indicator for north. Once you have spotted it you need only go in a clockwise fashion and use one of my personal favorite mnemonics to find the other directions. The mnemonic goes 'Never Eat Soggy Waffles' and represents North, South, East, and West. Therefore, in theory, once you have found Polaris you can now find all the other directions and therefor navigate the world without a map in your hands." And hopefully not get lost.

Place the poster on the wall and then stand back various distances to test how well you can see and then attempt the charm to see if there is a difference. Once you all have gotten the hang of things we will move on to looking at actual stars. You may begin."

Did he SERIOUSLY get points docked for his question? The wifi thing was a legit question. Pfft, sparkly!man being an annoying girl about this. He wasn't asking so that HE could google it, duh, Ascanius didn't have to means to have a smart phone, dude. He was ASKING because every person in this room seemed to have an almost GOOGLE worthy knowledge on stuff. But sure, blame the best looking guy in the room. After all... that was REALLY why he got points docked. Ugly Professor had ugly feeling toward pretty Ascanius. Smirk.

So he just shrugged at Flamstead and sat FURTHER back in his seat. Whatever.

As he was zoning out, he heard the Professor say something about beginning. Jeez, was there an activity in this class too? What was with these overactive Professors making them MOVE and stuff. Downright rude, pfft.

Smirk. Eyesight? He didn't even NEED to test his. Everything else was 100% perfect about him, why wouldn't his eyesight be that way too? He supposed, though, that he could, you know, do this HIS way. So he got up and grabbed a chart.

And then he hung it on the wall and took a few steps back. Leggo.

It was not even a question that Nigel could see the letters on the chart better. He even di the weird thing of moving backwards and forwards while still looking at the same line on the chart. Nope no difference. He could still see it perfectly clear. Waste of Time. Did Flamsteed want him to just start reciting the letters because he did not even know the purpose of this other than to look at girls and the star at night.

Nigel had no problem with either application. But he would prefer looking at the stars because the first one could end badly. Done with this seemingly worthless activity. The claw leaned against a wall and looked out the window to see how far he could see with the spell still in effect.

It was awesome

Once Kace stood up he checked his eyes and looked at lines 8 and 9. He could read them CLEARLY. He finally did it! He could read the letters perfectly. He felt confident and his wand did not fail him. Well that was a plus. He could read line 9 and recite the words in his head.

P E Z O L C T D

Well at least he knew he didn't need glasses if he could use this spell.

He wondered what else he was going to learn today. This class was getting fun by the minute and plus the Professor was kind of cool with his dance moves and all.

Now he wondered when the spell would wear off.....

"Oculo Focalis. Oculo Focalis. Oculo Focacalis... whoops!" said Marigold, trying the charm again. "Oculo Focalis." She added a swish this time, muttering the incantation again.
