Default Introduction to Alchemy

It was actually quite nice being able to return to Hogwarts to teach a special class; Althea Schirmer, new Department Head of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes did miss her former students at least a little bit. Most of them. Some of them. She did hope her particular favourites would be interested in attending, even if she wouldn't acknowledge who they were out loud. Not charms of course, rather she was presenting an introduction to Alchemy, one of the subjects rather close to her heart as a metal charmer.

She rather hoped that it might just encourage an interest amongst some of the students. Usually Alchemy lessons were only offered to 6th and 7th years, but Gaellen had asked her to make the material as accessible as possible to all ages, and she'd done her best though she intended to make it clear that if anyone did not understand anything, they should look into it further in their own time, she was only tasked with introducing key concepts, not ensuring that the slower children knew the subject inside out.

And really there was only so much you could do in one lesson.

Tables had been set up in the observatory rather similarly to what might be found in the potions classroom, except that there was an array of unusual equipment on each table -no two tables had precisely the same item, though all seemed similar somehow, or perhaps like they were made for similar purposes, or to be used together. Some appeared to be in miniature, as a representative of what it might truly be, just for demonstration purposes.

She had set up a board behind her, on which was the following, charmed to scroll across the top:

Quote:
WELCOME TO INTRODUCTION TO ALCHEMY. DO NOT TOUCH THE ITEMS ON YOUR TABLES. AT LEAST TWO STUDENTS AND NO MORE THAN FIVE TO A TABLE PLEASE.

The Goals of the Alchemist
--find the panacea
--find the alkahest
--turning things into gold (chrysopoeia) and other noble metals

Magnum Opus (The Great Work, or finding the Philosopher's Stone)
nigredo -a blackening or melanosis
albedo -a whitening or leucosis
citrinitas - a yellowing or xanthosis
rubedo - a reddening, purpling, or iosis

Definitions
Alkahest - Believed by Paracelsus to be the Philosophers Stone, or an element of its creation. This is a hypothetical universal solvent, having the power to dissolve every other substance, including gold.

Azoth - This serves as the essential agent of alchemical transformation, and embodies the concept of the main goals in Alchemy it is a possible universal medicine, universal solvent, or Elixir of Life. It is a name for Mercury as cardinal principle of Alchemy.

Chrysopoeia - A symbolic representation of the Philosophers Stone, chrysopoeia means transmutation into gold, from the Greek khrusōn, 'gold', and poiēin, 'to make'.

Panacea - also called the pancrest, or Panakeia in Greek, is named for the Greek Goddess of universal remedy, she supposedly had a magical medicinal substance which could cure all ills. It is a remedy that is supposed to cure all diseases and prolong life indefinitely.

Solve et Coagula - 'Separate and Join Together' (or dissolve and coagulate')

Spagyrics -the production of herbal medicines using alchemical techniques such as fermentation, distillation and the extraction of mineral components from the ash of a plant. Greek for 'separate and recombine'

The Cardinal Principles of Alchemy
The Alchemical trinity of principles.
In alchemical terms all things are composed of three parts- Sulphur , Mercury, and Salt. The alchemist separates and recombines these three cardinal principles as often as necessary until they are in perfect proportion and harmony, and the raw material has been reduced to its purest essence.

Mercury
- principle of fusibility and volatility
- represents water element
- represents the life force

Salt
- principle of fixity and in-combustibility
- represents earth element
- represents the physical body

Sulphur
- principle of flammability
- represents fire element
- represents the soul or individualized essence of being

The Alchemy / Astrology Relationship
Sun - Gold
Moon - Silver
Mercury - Mercury
Venus - Copper
Mars - Iron
Jupiter - Tin
Saturn - Lead

The Three Major Strands of Alchemy
Distinguishable as relatively independent from one another.

"Welcome everyone." Althea greeted as the students began to file in. "Remember this is an optional lesson. I don't much mind if you choose not to stay, but I will see to it that anyone who disrupts this seminar will lose house points, so if you choose to leave, do so quietly." And she was sure the great majority of them knew she wasn't to be trifled with - if she said points might be lost, well, they might just.

"I'm Althea Schirmer, most of you know me as your former Charms professor, But I am now Department Head of Accidents and Catastrophes at the British Ministry of Magic, and today I'm here to introduce you all to the field of Alchemy, which I studied alongside Experimental Charms, Medieval Charms and Metal Charming during my university career. You may still address me as Professor Schirmer. We will begin in a few moments."

-----------------------

OOC: This is your first seminar for the term! Totally optional to attend, all students may join in except mine. It will be around 20 hours before the class actually begins, feel free to post arriving and settling in until then, and remember that your charrie is being watched, so don't be bad and stuff. It will be open for 1 week.

Additional updates regarding when the next posts can be expected will be found in my most recent post.

My posts will be indexed in this first post, and anyone can PM or VM me if they aren't sure how to jump in.

Don't forget, you're encouraged to RP your charrie not knowing things if you don't think that they would. As long as they're listening and taking notes and being engaged in the lesson, you won't be penalised and will still earn points. Its up to you what you think your character would already know.

INDEX OF POSTS AND QUESTIONS
Question One: What is the purpose of Alchemy? What are the goals of the Alchemist?
asked here ----- answered here
Question Two: What do you know about the cardinal principles of Alchemy, salt, sulphur and mercury? What are they? What do they mean?
asked here ----- answered here
Question Three: What connections can you think of between Astrology and Alchemy? Also, if there are any questions about what has been covered so far, now is the time to ask them.
asked here ----- answered here
Question Four: Aside from Carl Jung and Sir Isaac Newton, who are some famous Alchemists and what are some of their achievements?
asked here ----- answered here

Activity: "What I want you to do, is have one person from your table stand up, and I will call on that person and explain what the instrument on their table is and what it does. Then as a class, you'll each look through your symbol sheets and see if you can identify related symbols. You may have noticed the symbol lists aren't in English, but you are all familiar enough with Latin by now that you should be able to deduce which is correct. So one person from each group please stand up and we'll get started."

"Alright, it's decided then. I'll do it." *GULP* "And thanks, I'm sure it'll be fine." Yeah fine...not scary or anything. Just standing up with the focus on her...totally fine. With this in mind, the second year stood slowly, waiting for instructions.

Emmanuelle stood up for her group, gulping nervously. She just knew that she was about to reveal just how confused she still was about the class, but it was too late. She was already out of her seat. Surely she wasn't the only one still confused, right? So, hopefully she wouldn't make to much of a fool of herself.

Then they needed a volunteer from each group. He looked at Louisa and Nessie with a quick nod and a mouthed I'll do it then stood and approached the former Charms Professor.
"Just stay where you are Mr. Vanderbilt." Althea said, holding up her hand to stop him. "Stay at your table please."

So, the first one:

"At Mr Vanderbilt's table you see a set up made of copper. At the bottom of the larger piece is a sort of pot, on top is an onion shaped chamber with a long, downward pointing tube, which leads to a coil within a smaller container." She described it simply, though they'd be able to see it for themselves. "This is a whole set of several items, which have a particular purpose. You may notice some of the other items on the other tables look similar to this, or like a part of this set up. Find a symbol which relates to what this set-up is called."

Lead by example...right?
"At Mr Gert's table what you see is a container which you may notice looks like it ought to be a part of something similar to the set at Mr. Vanderbilt's table, which is true but this particular part has its own name. Often it is a flask instead of a pot/vase shape like this one, but either way this is the receptacle which the raw material is placed. Find a symbol that represents what this item is. Here's a clue. Desiree looked down at her handout again, which they were apparently going to be using to identify the things on their table.. the Alchemical instruments or something like that. She looked at Zhenya to make sure it was ok, and stood up so the Professor could give them more information about their object.

"Miss Remora's table has a strangely shaped glass object. Those of you who are smart enough to make the connection might see similarities between this and the set up on the first table, and that is because they have the same purpose. This glass object is used in chemistry too, and this is a modern example. What is it called? find a symbol that represents it."

"At Miss Wilson's table you can see a different apparatus, this one is made up of some earthenware pots, that fit together into what you see in front of you. I want you all to find out what it is called and find the symbol for what alchemical process this apparatus is used for."

She wasn't going to look like she wasn't paying attention, after all, not when it was her favorite professor overseeing things, and definitely not considering she wasn't as sure about the topic as she was some others. And she'd glanced at the apparatus on the table she was at as it was brought up again. So one of the symbols might represent this?, she thought, glancing down at her worksheet again before it registered that someone was going to have to volunteer. She still wasn't sure where her partner's attention had gone, so her dark eyes went to him once more to hopefully let him know what she was going to do, before she stood up. Volunteering it was, but then if it helped her understand what exactly was sitting on her table that she was trying to avoid touching, she'd do what it took. She didn't think she'd have to answer any questions, either.
"This one is a little harder. You may need to refer to other sources to find the answer. On Miss Gardiner's table is a miniature version of a kind of furnace. Find what it is called and then you can either look for the alchemical symbol which represents it, or choose a symbol which represents the alchemical processes associated with its use."

"Stand up then please, so people can see where to look." Althea requested. She waited for her to stand and then addressed the class. Althea returned the smile.

"Miss Antoinette has an object on her table which some of you might recognise as having a use in a kitchen. These come in many different shapes and sizes but most of them resemble this one. Well... it took them a while to decide on that hmm?

"At Miss Bishop's table is a miniaturised version of an apparatus which is used for a particular kind of thermal treatment, one of the 12 vital processes required for the transformation of a substance. Once you deduce what it is called, figure out what it is for and find the symbol that represents the process."

"Thank you but we're covered now I think." Althea answered, watching someone else at the same table stand up.

"There are some textbooks and references here which you may use to help you out. Feel free to make use of them, they're on the front desk. If you can't find a specific symbol choose one which is related in some way, either to the processes the apparatus is used for, or to the materials which it is made out of. Please work together! You're encouraged to talk and to get up and visit the other tables to examine the apparatus at each location if you wish - please be careful if you wish to touch them. I will take points if anything is broken, some of this equipment is very valuable. It doesn't matter if you don't get them all right either, participation is key. This is a class effort, together I'm sure we can find the answers, and maybe learn a bit about the equipment as you go. You may begin, and I'm here to answer any questions."

This activity is worth 5 points minimum just for participating, provided 5 posts are made actually working on the activity. The right answers DON'T have to be found, but there might be some bonuses in store if they are! The activity will be open for at least 24 hours, and then the introduction lesson will be wrapped up. questions are encouraged but don't have your character ask anything that they need to wait on an answer for, as I won't have the professor address them until I post when the 24 hour period is up. I'll update the notes as soon as I can. Remember this is a class effort, you can work with one or two others if you want but you'll get more participation for discussing with the whole class and talking to others, and getting up and looking at the other places. Those who are standing ARE allowed to move though by the way. That was just so people could look and SEE where the one we were talking about was.

SPOILER!!: table #6

"Stand up then please, so people can see where to look." Althea requested. She waited for her to stand and then addressed the class. "Miss Paulidine has an item, or really two items, on her table which many of you likely recognise. What is it called? Choose a symbol that represents a substance that it may be used to crush."
SPOILER!!: table #7

Althea returned the smile.

"Miss Antoinette has an object on her table which some of you might recognise as having a use in a kitchen. These come in many different shapes and sizes but most of them resemble this one. What is it called? Choose a symbol which you think can be associated with this apparatus and make sure you can explain why you choose that symbol."

SPOILER!!: table #8

Well... it took them a while to decide on that hmm?

"At Miss Bishop's table is a miniaturised version of an apparatus which is used for a particular kind of thermal treatment, one of the 12 vital processes required for the transformation of a substance. Once you deduce what it is called, figure out what it is for and find the symbol that represents the process."
SPOILER!!: table #9

"At Miss Moreau's table you can see there is a lid of sorts on a stand. This is made of glass as it is a more modern example of itself." Althea paused. "You may notice that it is similar to a piece of the very first apparatus. You'll find that the name is the same for this piece as it is for the apparatus as a whole. I would like you to all look for a symbol which represents the process which this item is used for."
SPOILER!!: table #10

ooc: I have enough now! But thanks! Just assume someone else at the same table stood up. It doesn't matter which or specifically who.

Chelle looked at Oichi. She knew what was kept on their table. She knew what it was called. But she had no idea how she was supposed to figure out which symbol meant what.

So are we supposed to use our textbooks to figure these symbols out?

"Okay. So this is obviously a mortar and a pestle. Do you know what these Alchemical symbols or terms represent?" she said to Oichi, moving her hands in a slightly frustrated manner.

Kurumi peered around Jezz when the item was revealed and recognized it almost instantly. It was slightly different looking than the one she had used to make cheese cake and custards - this one looking MUCH more elaborate and fancy than what she had at home - but there was no doubt in the Gryffindor's mind as to what it was. "This one is a Bain-marie," she semi announced to anyone that was nearby, and not just her own table. "I've used it to make cheesecakes and custards, sometimes to melt chocolate as well." In case anyone was wondering why she knew what this thing was. It related to baking. "It requires the use of water and it is used to heat things gradually towards a fixed temperature and does so very gently. That's why it is best for custards. It is also used to keep things warm." Like custards. She could go into more details about how the device was constructed and what each of the parts did, but Kurumi sort of felt like perhaps that was unnecessary information, for now. Heating things gradually...keeping things warm...surely there was some sort of symbol that related to that, yes?

As always though, Kurumi seemed to have the answer that she didn't. She smiled and said, "Well then, for Alchemy uses it would be useful for melting metals I suppose." But that hadn't been the question the Professor wanted an answer to. What symbol and why? "Anyone have any ideas on the symbol," she said addressing all of those withing hearing distance.

Oichi was handed some sort of hammer and bucket thing by the professor and told to stand up. She did just that and then turned back to the young girl at her table and said, "It's nice to meet you Chelle. I think we are supposed to figure what this thing the professor just handed me is and what symbol it could relate too. what do you think? I think our metal thing is mostly definately a bucket with maybe some old fashion hammer".

Chelle smiled at Oichi in acknowledgement. Then she frowned.

A bucket and a hammer? I don't think so...

"Um, Oichi, I'm pretty sure it's a mortar and pestle. You know, Professor Schirmer's given us enough clues," she replied. Yes. She was sure of it. "As in, we use the pestle to grind stuff in the mortar..." she tried again. Then she looked at Oichi to see if she agreed.

When the description of the object on Ella's table was finished, the second year sat down and examined the mini apparatus. To her, it looked a lot like a furnace of some kind. Which made quite a lot of sense, especially since the Professor had said the world thermal treatment. She had also given them the hint that the treatment was one of the 12 vital processes. That was something for them to investigate.

"You guys, I think maybe we could start by reading a bit about the 12 processes. That way we can figure out which ones involve heat, yeah?" She suggested to her group, hoping she was on the right track. She then leaned forward and grabbed her text, wanting to get started straight away. "Alright...the 12 vital processes...there's Oxidation, Digestion, Fermentation, Congelation, Fixation, Ceration, Distillation, Sublimation, Filtration, Solution, Multiplication, and Projection." She said aloud as she used her finger to indicate the 12 processes on the page in front of her.

Gideon listened to Professor Schirmer described a thing or two about each of the items on the various groups' table. His group had an bulbous-shaped container that almost looked like a cauldron or a crucible but it surely couldn't be that simple. "Alright..." he said getting his group's attention as they were told to try and figure out the symbol that matched up with their item. "Well we have an open-ended bulbous container that my first thought could be acidus vegetabile due to its connection to a gourd. However as Professor Schirmer mentioned, the shape of the item we have isn't always the form it takes." That in it self made the deciphering a little interesting since you had to take both options into consideration.

"Anyone have any other ideas of what it could be symbolized by?" the prefect questioned as he himself looked over his copy of the symbol sheet that Kurumi had handed out for the professor. Gideon briefly looked at Selina knowing she had a better grasp of Latin then he did at times, having been exposed to the language by her parents.

He stopped short when Professor Schirmer held up her hand and started explaining the item on their table. He had started to guess what it can do, although unsure of what it was called. It wasn’t until when the Professor neared Table #3 that he suddenly realized what they had, since he recognized the glass equipment immediately. “It’s a distiller.” he murmured to their group as he started leafing through his handouts, then looked up and reached out for the textbook on the desk up front, leafing through them, he tried to find out what their copper equipment was called. “That one over there…” he angled his head back at Table #3 “… is the modern version of what we have here, but they do pretty much the same thing.”

Looking down at the clay bowl on the table before her, Lana tilted her head slightly. It was easy to just say it was a bowl, but she knew that there was more to it. Glancing over to Chris for some help, she frown as she tried to think about what it was call in term of Alchemy. Reaching for her notes and a textbook, she flipped through for a mention of something similar to a bowl. Stopping when she saw something, she looked to her table. "I think it's a cupel," she nodded. It was the most reasonable thing for it to be and from its appearance, it made sense to her.

Glancing to the symbols, she frowned. She had a sinking feeling finding the right symbol would be a bit harder but she was up for the challenge all the same. Taking the sheets of symbols, she started to study them closely.

Louisa leaned in closely to listen to what Vickers called the copper pot. A distiller? Good to know. She nodded her head at him seriously before craning her head over to the table he addressed. "So we got the old version?" And no, she didn't want an answer to that. He'd already said this, she was just making sure she was following him. He seemed to know what this class was about. No offense, but Althea was making much more sense when she taught Charms.

Or maybe it was Louisa's mind refusing to accept Alchemy. Either way, she had a textbook open right in front of her... just for visual trickery, hehe.

"So.. uh.. what symbol... relates to distiller?" Re-wording Althea's question. But her gaze fell down on the book with weird symbols and Latin words.

Who knows...

Nigel had no idea what table he was at. So he just started taking notes on what everybody who was standing up was saying about the objects Professor Schirmer assigned to each table. While taking notes Nigel also looked through the symbol sheet the gryffindor prefect handed out. Nigel was trying to identify related symbols with some difficulty.

"Doesn't have to be metals," Kurumi said as she shook her head, reading over the list of symbols. "Some of these indicate ingredients...and not all of them are metal." Her eyes fell on one that, after flipping through her Latin dictionary, discovered that it meant horse poop. Ew. That was sort of gross. "I wonder if there is a symbol that represents heating...or temperature...or something like that..." Kurumi's violet eyes continued to scan the parchment and her dictionary, falling on the D category when she heard Louisa ask something from her table. "Jezz, you keep looking, I'll be right back."

This Gryffindor's curiosity had been tickled!

Leaving her table and walking over to where Louisa was Kurumi took a look at the item and sort of just stared at it. Erm...right. THAT wasn't used for anything baking as far as she knew, so the Gryffindor just looked at it before her gaze went to Louisa. "Um...there is a symbol here that is the alchemical symbol for distill..." Kurumi offered, pointing to her parchment where there was something that could only be described as an upside down check mark. Kurumi would try to say the Latin...but it would only come out sounding like gibberish. Pointing worked.

She said, looking at her her group members. "It has to do with raising wood or coal or something to a certain temperature." Then the second year eyed the apparatus on the table curiously. "You think this could be used for something like that? It does look like a good place to do some burning." And hopefully Ella was on the right track.

Kurumi offered, pointing to her parchment where there was something that could only be described as an upside down check mark. Kurumi would try to say the Latin...but it would only come out sounding like gibberish. Pointing worked.
Louisa was staring at the symbols in her textbook. Distill symbol, right? This shouldn't be.. too hard. She frowned at the page before moving to the next one with yet another set of stuff on it. Louisa tilted her head to the side, she had this urge of turning the book upside down and see if it made any different, hehe. But no. It wasn't really that complicated. Vickers did the hard part, bless him.

Just when she was about to move to the next page, Kurumi was nearby pointing at a symbol. Louisa looked up at the Gryffindor, raising her eyebrows. Oh. So.. they were... normal again? Like the way they used to be before the unspeakable discussion?

"Err..." she looked back at the symbol the girl just pointed at. "Y-yeah, you're right. It's ..." Louisa tilted her head sideways, ".. Deftillare." She read out loud, glancing at her partners.

Oh and Kurumi. "Thanks," she gave the quickest smile a human being ever mustered to give another.

"You're welcome," the sixth year smiled. Kurumi was far too focused on the task at had to realize or even remember the awkwardness that was in the air surrounding her and Louisa right now. It also helped that Vickers was there. Kurumi cocked her head to the side and looked at their item again. Had she heard Vickers call it a distiller? It looked like a glorified coffee maker made from copper to be entirely honest. "You really think this thing distills?" Kurumi asked, pointing to the object on their table. "I wonder how it does that..." Kurumi was rather curious about this coffee maker. "It looks like a cappuccino maker...like this is where the foam would come out and into the cup..."

Okay, so maybe her previous notions about it not looking like anything she had ever used in cooking before had been a bit off not that she really got a look at it.

"Only...it's interesting how it looks like this one tube is running from the first one...into the second...and then out of the second. I imagine something else it supposed to go there to catch whatever is coming out of it," Kurumi continued as she pointed to the bit of copper tubing sticking out of the cup looking part. "Do you...think this part heats?" she asked, pointing to the solid copper section that looks like a copper squash.

"Really? Well you may be right. I have just never seen anything quite like this so if you know what it is I won't question you. I was only guessing. Anyway, what symbol do you think represents the mortar and pestil?".

Alyssa looked at the container on their table. It almost looked like a rounded copper pot. She listened as Gideon gave his suggestion as to what he thought the symbol of the receptable would look like. Alyssa quickly looked down the list of symbols to see what the symbol Gideon suggested it looked like. "Acidus Vegetabile."

Then she remembered what the Professor had hinted at. "Gideon did the Professor give us a hint and say that the symbol looked like a gourd? What about Antimonium. Doesn't that look like a gourd? "Alyssa asked her team leader.

Lily waited until the professor had finished explaining their object. Then she set to work. She first looked at her worksheets figuring that those would be the most helpful of the materials. Turning to Ira and Dora, she spoke up after finding something. "Comparing the shape of our object to the shape of the symbol on the worksheet it looks like it could be Aurum Fulminans... but I don't know..." Now to just figure out what that meant before moving on to a different table, with a different object... "What do you guys think?"

It seemed the only answer he was to get to his question was from his own table. Oh well...they could discuss between the four of them right? "Aye she did say that," Gideon confirmed with a nod as Alyssa asked him about what had been said about the symbol they were to find for their item.

Leaning against their table, he looked over the sheet again, letting his gaze filter down until he found Antimonium and the symbol beside it. Well what did you know...it did look like a ghord of sorts. "Aye it does. Perhaps that is it." Could they be done? The prefect wondered what the other pair felt and if they might agree with them, his attention turning to his girlfriend and Oakey.

"Wait...Antimonium is a metal...right?"

Alyssa looked into her textbook to look for a symbol that looked like a gourd and found one that looked like it. According to textbook, the symbol represented the Alchemical Symbol of Retort. "Hey Gideon. I think I found the symbol that looks like a gourd. Here's what it look like." Alyssa dragged over her textbook to show him the symbol.

"Doesn't it look like a gourd? Now all I need to figure out is what the latin word for it is." Alyssa said hoping that she was on the right track.

two sides of the same coin

Desiree stared at the strange glass container and looked over to the first table the professor pointed out, which had an older but similar one. She had no idea what it was or did, but she wasn't going to just sit there. She immidiately started flipping through the textbooks, scan, flip, scan, flip. She wasn't sure why, but she was determined to find it. She was just about to turn the page when she paused and flipped back. There was a picture of what appeared to be all the alchemical instruments they had in front of them, unfortunately it didn't give definitions just more symbols. Symbols that didn't really match up to the symbols on the handout. Only more confused she kept looking.. until she found it.

"Distillation!" she hadn't meant to say that out loud, but oh well. She turned to Zhenya. "I think I found it." she pointed to the page in her book, the definition read: Distillation is the sixth operation in alchemical transformation. Denoted by the symbol for the constellation Virgo. It is essentially a process of concentration.

"Then that would make this.. what a distiller right?" So they had figured out what it is, but not what symbol it was. She knew it said the symbol for Virgo, but she couldn't find it anywhere.. maybe there was a different symbol? "But what do you think the symbol is..?" she asked Zhenya voicing her thoughts out loud again.
