The desks were set up in an oddly ordinary fashion; straight rows, with individual tables and chairs respectively and a larger desk at the front of the room. Josephina was sitting on the larger desk, ankles crossed, as she half turned and was focused on evidently trying to pick up sticks with . . . another stick? Oh yes, the Arithmancy Professor has probably lost it.
Hardly paying attention as you entered the room, you should first notice the cursive handwriting on the chalkboard, which needless to say looked rushed:
Quote:
Please take a seat and have your parchment and quill ready. Class will begin shortly.
OOC: This lesson was meant to open already, but due to working unscheduled this morning, *headdesks*. The lesson will begin in an hour or so. Please keep the chatting to a minimum; that's what the second floor corridor is for. =)
Class has begun. Please pretend as though you were here all along, <3
Josephina had heard voices and feet enter the classroom, but she kept her focus on the task at hand, which was picking up sticks with another stick, which meant unfortunately, she didn't even look up to acknowledge those kids who greeted her and dared interrupt her game. Though the sound of something else was what cause her to break her gaze as the sticks all moved around.
"Ugh," she murmured under breath, as she turned to find the cause of the distraction.
"Miss Denver!" Josephina called out, as her eyes fixed upon the blond fifth year. "Five points from Gryffindor. I do believe I made a request to wearing comfortable shoes, explicitly no heels for the ladies." Nevermind the fact that she herself was wearing a pair of one-inch heels; but she was the professor. She was covered if she got injured from the heels, but if the students got injured, then parents might be having at her head.
Back to the class. Some of them she believe asked what she had been doing. "Playing a game," she answered nonchalantly. "Lesson will begin shortly ... we'll just wait a few more moments for those last minute stragglers. In the meantime, see if you can recognize what game I was playing." Cause now it was back to trying to pick up the sticks with the one stick . . .
FIVE POINTS?! For stinkin' high heels. Riley's mouth fell open and his head went from Lexi to the Professor. That was a bit of an over reaction obviously but RIley wasn't going to object for fear of loosing Gryffindor more points. SO instead he looked over at Lexi and gave her a sad little wave.
What game was she playing? He had already guessed before in his head but did she want them to guess out loud? He didn't think so yet since she said they would wait for others so he took out a spare sheet of parchment and wrote it down on there ready to flash it up when she asked. Just like a game show! Fuuuun!
Emily entered the classroom, "Morning Professor" she beamed, she was looking forward to Arithmancy, it was a very interesting stubject. Emily took her seat at the front of the class and pulled out her parchment, quill and ink and set them down on her desk.
Looking around the classroom she was hoping that her friend Claire wouldn't be late to class.
Claire hurried into class, she didn't want to be late. After scanning the room she noticed that Emily was already there, she laughed to herself, of course Emily was already there, she couldn't be late to class to save her life.
"Morning Professor", said Claire as she approached the front of the class. She smiled down at Emily and took a seat next to her.
"Where'd you run off to this morning? I couldn't find you anywhere", she said as she pulled out her parchment ane quill.
What the? Lexi looked at her BOOTS and the slightly raised back portion and shook her head. "Comfortable shoes... I thought that was what I had worn, Professor. Sorry the heel of these makes a noise..." she said with a grimace.
Right. So, Ellie was going to apply the same rule as she did with Ancient Runes, which worked perfectly; she'll come to the first lesson, if she gets lost, she won't come anymore. She could possibly be dropping a LOT of classes this term. But she really liked Hadley, so hopefully Arithmancy won't be on of them.
"Hi Professor," she smiled as she walked passed and took a seat.
Huh. So, she prepared herself to NOT be confused. It'll probably happen, anyway, but at least she'd have tried, right?
And now Treyen was more than glad he'd come to the lesson. If Ellie was going to come to Arithmancy, then it didn't matter if he failed the subject, he'd come anyway.
The boy pretty much smiled to himself as his eyes got stuck in her direction.

Not wanting to break the woman's concentration, she instead sent her a smile, and took a seat beside Treyen. "Hey, Treyen." He got a smile as well, but her attention was soon averted back to the professor and the nameless game. Was she any good?
Until Arya came and broke his concentration. Huh? What concentration? He wasn't focusing on anything, except those sticks Hadley was playing with, no?
"Hey Arya," he smiled, and...kept his eyes on his quill this time.

He smirked, though, it seemed Hadley had lost her concentration thanks to people talking to her. She shouldn't be playing a game that needs her mind to remain focused on it.

"I was in the library, got a start on my potions and divination homework... you should probably do the same. We still have charms due soon as well."
Emily was all about classes and homework, classes and homework and if she had the time she would fit in private study.... but she still had time to socialise of course. She wasn't that much of a bookworm.

Uh huuuh...
Well, best not bug a professor while they're busy. Even if it was sooooo tempting to poke her in the shoulder until she messed up with whatever she was doing. Really, what was with the sticks?
Sitting down in her middle seat and taking out her notebook, quill, and ink, the Slytherin opened to a new page before glancing over to see what got the professor so...eh? Hehe. Not that Evelyn minded of course. Though she did wonder if the Professor was going to be like this the whole class.
Back to the class. Some of them she believe asked what she had been doing. "Playing a game," she answered nonchalantly. ... was she kidding?
Jake tapped his finger on the board. "What... what does it say?"
He looked up at the cursive writing and glaaaaaaaaaared at it. "What... do... you... sayyyyyyyy?!"
Heh. Comfortable shoes. Good job he was wearing his Iron Man sneakers. BOOYAH.
But yes... the scribbles...
"Oh... and if this lesson has anything to do with muggles I'll... well... be pretty bored of them to be honest."
Bad mood? NOOOOOO! Never!

Salander's head spun around between the Professor and Lexi, eyes growing large when the Professor docked 5 pts from Gryffindor. Over shoes.
He leaned back in his seat, which unfortunately is as far as he's gonna get from the Professor since he chose to sit front and center.
Did she just ask what game she was playing?
Uhm.... kinda obvious innit?
"Pickin'-up Stix?" he mumbled oh so quietly

Chloe walked into class just as the professor was repremanding a student of her own house for not wearing comfortable shoes. She cringed hearing about the 5 point loss. She had not remembered that rule herself but she was wearing her regular black flats which were certainly comfortable enough, thank goodness. She quickly made her way furtherinto the classroom and sat down not saying a word. She then took out her supplys of parchment and a quil and waited for class to start.
Pick up sticks Patroclus siad emotionless, not want to express the fact that he was not very happy that the class had started off with point lose, for such a trivial matter as Heel hight, and after all, Lexi was in boots not helss.
But Patroclus stayed quite, he would not lose them more points, but hoped that the Professor would see the error of her ways.
Back to the class. Some of them she believe asked what she had been doing. "Playing a game," she answered nonchalantly. It was only then that Ellie realized that Hadley was actually doing something. A game? A game with sticks.... That was rather pointless wasn't it?

Apparently she had been too intent on focusing to take in her surroundings. Because now, she saw Treyen, and she sent him a smile. The kind she was going to do more often. Yup.
Pity she hadn't seen him earlier, though. She'd have sat next to him. Bleh.
Then again, maybe more focusing would happen if there weren't friends within talking distance?
On that note, back to focusing on focusing.

Arya knew that look..? She was almost certain she knew that look. It was the one that a certain Griffindor gave her only.....not. Hmm.
The young teen gave her friend a sideways partly suspicious and partly confused look. She wouldn't say anything about the look now, maybe after class, but not now, now was not the time. Instead she just continued to look at him before turning her attention to the professor when she spoke.
Yea. She knew it was a game, but name of the game still escaped her. Whatever. Digging through her bag, she pulled out her quill and some parchment for the lesson.

Oh, and she was smiling already, he was almost certain it was thanks to the advice he'd given her.
For whatever reason the boy was actually grabbing his bag, as if he was leaving his own seat to sit next to her...until, he shook his head. Whaaat was happening to him? It was all Hadley's fault, yeah, that was it. He'd blame her before.
SPOILER!!: Arya <3

He felt eyes on him. And so he returned the favor and looked the person back. Arya. "Why--" was she looking at him like that?
Treyen frowned and decided it was best to keep his eyes away from Ellie, from Arya, and probably from Hadley. The chalkboard will get his full attention now. Lucky chalkboard.

Perhaps all the point system did was to re-inforce the house grudges and dispirit young ones like Raven........

Kurumi frowned as she took a seat next to Patroclus and set all her school books our on the table with her parchment and quill ready. "Hey," she said gloomily. More minus points...this time over shoes. What a waste.
Leaning over the desk a bit, Kurumi recognized the game immediately. "Professor, I believe you are playing Pick-up Sticks," she said with her hand raised despite class not officially beginning yet. "I believe the game first began in China and was actually used for Divination purposes. There is a nursery rhyme that goes with it as well... One, two, buckle my shoe.
Three, four, shut the door.
Five, six, pick up sticks.
Seven, eight, lay them straight.

Kurumi put her hand down still feeling a it gloomy about her house losing points.

As soon as the words, five points from Gryffindor were uttered from her lips, Josephina could feel the tension around the room from the Lions. It felt almost constricting, made it hard for her to focus. She dock ALL their rubies from the hourglass for making her feel this way ... confused. UGH! Merlin, Eagles and their brains she could deal with, but for real? The Lions and their brave spirit . . . could make anyone's head spin.
And then the blond girl interrupted her thought process again. Hmm? What? Not high heels? Swallowing, she looked at the boots for the first time since the girl entered the classroom. Not entirely the most comfortable shoes, but not heels either. "Oh, my apologies." She said, shaking her head and reversing the rubies silently.
Sigh. Lions.

Emily looked over at Claire, a blank expression on her face. Emily hadn't read anything about counting aids in the text book... counting aids... counting aids, she thought, racking her brain for an answer.
Slowly she put her hand up, "Professor Hadley, by counting aid do you mean somehting along the lines of a calculator or abacus?" she asked uncertainly.
She was very tempted to read into her bag and pull out the text book....
Super Slytherin Buddy | | ⅓ She-Snake Trio | | a normal girl with normal knees
Pick up sticks. Huh, she still never heard of that game before. In fact, it looked kinda boring.
However, the mention of lessons being different caught her attention. Their lessons weren't going to be muggle based were they? Like other classes they had? Because Evelyn was going to throw a fit if that were the case.
Counting aides? To tell the truth, Evelyn was a bit confused on what was being asked. Merlin, maybe she was coming down with something. "Do you mean like, using your fingers to help you count?" she asked after raising her hand. Was that what she meant about counting aides?
"Erm, one the best aides I have learned with working with numbers is take it slow and if the problem is long take it one step at a time. You don't want to do math too quickly and get it wrong and you don't want to get syched out just cause the problem is long. Thise two things have helped nme a lot over the years. I have a funny feeling that is not what you mean but that is the best I've got" Chloe said with her hand raised high.
"For those who are new to Arithmancy, welcome. For those returning, welcome back and well, I think you might find the lessons planned this year a bit ... different than in past, but hopefully enjoyable still." She started off. "I'm Professor Hadley, for those who don't know. Counting aides? Eino usually used his fingers, although that was awfully inconvenient because he ran out of them after ten, and he could well count up to ten without the help of his fingers. He raised his hand "I use numbers to count, Professor." But what he used to count numbers, well numbers of course. "A little stick for the amount of one, then curve it on top and give it a tail for the amount of two, and so on." He said than lowered his hand.
"For those who are new to Arithmancy, welcome. For those returning, welcome back and well, I think you might find the lessons planned this year a bit ... different than in past, but hopefully enjoyable still." She started off. Claire returned Emily's confused look... what did the Professor mean by counting aids?
Eager to contribute anyway Claire raised her hand.
"Is it like doing math using visual aids to represent numbers?" asked Claire, then she continued, "Like using cubes or blocks or beads to count?" she added still a bit confused about counting aids.

"I'm Professor Hadley, for those who don't know. And I'd like to start off by asking you for some good methods you've either used personally or know about from others about ... helping you with numbers. I guess you could say counting aides?"
Oh?! So they were going to play games with sticks! Arithmancy class was looking slightly better by the minute! Of course the dictionary-eater had done or said something to gain praise from the professor. Sierra would normally give the girl an eye roll, but with points flying off the hourglasses left and right, she'd just think about the eye roll rather than actually do it.
She turned her attention back to the professor when the woman said something about students new to Arithmancy. That'd be Sierra. She was pretty much new to everything at this point. She did, however, know the answer to the first question. Counting was something she'd been familiar with for a while. Raising her hand, she said, "What about tally marks? Where you make four lines and then cross them out to get a total of five?"
Smiling at Kurumi who had choosen to sit by his side, and then smiling more still when Lexi recieved an apology, Patroclus went to answer, but was beaten to his answer, by none other than Miss Flores-Shepard.
Gah, her and her fingers!
Quickly racking his brain for another idea, Patroclus had to think hard about what he used to count, "Professor would stacking, count?" He asked, before applying an example, "For example I find it easier to count, let's say money, when I seperate them into allotments then add the seperate totals into one grand totals." It was the perfect solution for someone who always got easily distracted, AKA Patroclus.
