I'm Lissy, and here are my 100 drabbles about Hogwarts most talented Herbologist, Neville Longbottom. My favorite Gryffie by far, I only hope I can do his charrie justice with these drabbles

Me? A Gryffindor?

Neville was absolutely terrified of the Sorting Hat. But really, who could blame him? He had just passed one hurdle by proving his magical ability by being accepted to Hogwarts, and now this?

He had been dreading it—what if it put him in Slytherin? Nah, he wasn’t cunning enough, even as a pureblood. The best he could hope for was Hufflepuff.

Lost in his thoughts, he could barely hear what the hat was saying to him. Something about hidden courage. He was so focused on where he WOULDN’T end up he didn’t even hear the verdict at first.

“GRYFFINDOR!”

Whomping Willow Dare

“Seamus is such an idiot,” Neville mumbled as his friend inched closer to the tree. They were NOT supposed to be there, but Seamus insisted that if Ron could survive an encounter with the tree—so could he.

So Dean bet him 10 galleons that he could touch it without getting horribly injured, and Seamus, being Seamus, took the bet. Neville was just here to watch him lose.

“Does he care that Harry and Ron didn’t touch the tree on purpose?”

“Nope,” Dean said with a chuckle.

WHAM! Seamus was thrown off his feet, and they rushed to his aid.

A Corporeal Patronus

Despite all his progress, Neville was still struggling with the Patronus Charm.
Granted there wasn’t much need for it now that Voldemort had been defeated, but still—he wanted to know what it was!

He practiced it for a couple of days in a row, finding it difficult to produce even though he was in a happy environment without any dementors or boggarts around. Finally, he started to produce silvery mist, and after a few days, he finally had a breakthrough. A real SHAPE had came out of his wand! It was a real animal!

It was…a toad. How predictable.

Christmas Shopping

“I think you should just get her socks. That’s a lovely gift! Come on, let’s go!” Seamus urged his friend, trying to grab his arm and drag him out of the shop.

Neville stayed put, though, rolling his eyes. “No, this is the shop that I’ll find it in, just give me a few more minutes!” he said.

Seamus sighed heavily and ignored the nasty glares the shopkeeper was giving him. After a few more minutes, Neville had made up his mind, and he pointed to the bracelet through the glass case.

“That one. That’s her gift. I’ll take it.”

Best Feast Ever

Neville did not—COULD not—believe it. He had not expected this when he came to the feast that day.

All he had managed to do was lose points that term, not GAIN any, so you can imagine his shock when he was awarded ten in front of the whole school. For standing up to his FRIENDS? Wasn’t it a good thing that they hadn’t let him stop them? If he had, they wouldn’t have stopped Quirrell, and You-Know-Who would be back!

Plus, the ten points had won them the cup!

Oh yes. This feast had been a good feast.

Planning Ahead

The future was a scary thing to think about. For the longest time, Neville had no idea what he could possibly do. More importantly, what COULD he do? He seemed to fail at everything.

After a few years, however, he realized that he had found his calling—plants. There wasn’t much you could really DO with that, but he’d find something. He’d do it.

Sure enough, after waiting a few years, he finally figured it out—Professor Sprout was retiring. Clearly, teaching was his DESTINY.

Now, all he needed to do was pluck up the courage to propose to Hannah.

Celebration

It was amazing how many people had come out to celebrate the capture of Yaxley by the Aurors. Neville couldn’t wait until all the remaining Death Eaters were finally locked behind bars. He missed his plants. Being an Auror was fun, but it wasn’t his dream. It was a temporary thing.

He wandered over to the food table and wrinkled his brows, picking up some cracker that was covered in some weird reddish-orange crème stuff. He took a bite, promptly spit it out, and chucked it away.

Whatever that was, it had been gross and tangy and just NOT good.

Plant Allergy

“Neville, I think you’re allergic to it,” His gran told him in concern, watching him fuss over the Flutterby bush. The poor boy was sneezing up a storm and, worse yet—refusing to accept it.

“No, I can’t be allergic to it! I must have a cold, is all…”

“Dear, you’re suffering. It’s just one plant you can’t be around, it’s no big deal!”

“I’m not allergic!” he insisted, before he sneezed so violently that he almost dropped the pot he had in his hands.

He refused to believe that one of things he loved most would cause him discomfort.

Trevor the Toad

He had wanted an owl. Owls were pretty, graceful, and very useful when it came to sending letters and such. Plus EVERYONE at school had an owl! All he wanted to do was fit in, but no—he got a TOAD instead.

At first, Neville had grinned and pretended to like Trevor while holding back his distaste for the animal. Once he got to Hogwarts however, he realized just how important this animal was going to be. It seemed like Trevor was going to be his only friend while at school.

“Hmm, I guess you’re not so bad after all.”

Fate or Fake?

“Divination is a complete waste of time Neville, if it’s stressing you out this much just drop it like I did!” Hermione insisted.

“What if what she says comes true?” Neville asked, completely ignoring her and repeating this question for the fifth time. While he would LIKE to believe that Trelawney was a fraud, her prediction about Lavender’s rabbit was just tooooo close for comfort.

“It’s not going to, Neville. I told you, she just got lucky!” she explained. Frustrated, Hermione rolled her eyes and left the table.

If something horrible DID happen to Gran…Hermione Granger would be soooo sorry!

Plotting Revenge

“It would be much easier to get back at them if I were an animagus or something,” Seamus said with a sigh. Ernie, who was seated on a hammock nearby, nodded gloomily. The Room of Requirement was starting to get pretty packed in the past couple of weeks, and to pass time, they plotted ways to get back at the Carrows.

“Then I could change into a cat or something and plant a dungbomb in their office…anything to make them suffer,” he said with a sigh.

Neville knew they just had to wait. The time to fight would come soon.

Mission Impossible

“Careful, Neville! Don’t drop it!” Ginny hissed at him.

“I won’t!” he snapped back at her. Luna continued to watch him with her wide-eyed stare as Neville climbed down from atop the pile of books, carrying the sword in his arms.

“Alright, now let’s just get out of here before Snape comes back and finds out the sword has been taken—or worse, finds out that WE’VE been in here,” she said.

“Come on, Neville!” Luna said happily, reaching up to give him a hand as he climbed down. All of a sudden, the sword slipped from his grip.

Slughorn's Potions

Ron was busying telling anyone who would listen about the first potions class of the term. Neville could care less about the new potions professor—HE wasn’t in that class anymore, and while it did sound like that Felix potion or whatever it was called WAS pretty cool, the fact that Harry had beaten Hermione at something was not as interesting to him as it was to others.

Suddenly, something caught his attention and he looked up. “Wait, there’s Amortentia in the castle?”

Ron nodded.

Neville shook his head. “I hope Slughorn keeps that away from some of these girls.”

Slip of the Tongue

“It was just a joke, Hannah!”

“I don’t care Ernie, it was mean and NOT funny!”

Neville couldn’t help but overhear the argument in the corridor that Ernie and Hannah were having…Ernie was such a prat. What did he do NOW to upset her?

As she passed him, whipping her eyes, he grumbled. “Ernie’s a pompous jerk, you should dump him.”

He hadn’t actually intended to say that OUT LOUD. It just slipped out and she looked at him in confusion. GASP. SHE HAD HEARD HIM!

Without another word, he turned on his heel and bolted to the boys bathroom.

Membership Denied

Slug Club? Pssh. Who needed it?!

Slughorn was just a big old mooch who wanted to make friends with students who could possibly give him expensive, shiny gifts when they got older. As if he needed any more crystallized pineapple…the man looked like a walrus!

That’s why Neville was not jealous at ALL when Slughorn didn’t invite him back to the Slug Club. He didn’t need to listen to Blaise or Cormac brag about their connections any more. It was just a complete waste of time, and a giant joke.

Yes. Neville wasn’t jealous at ALL. Yup. Not at all.

No Gift?

Seamus was such an ungrateful friend.

Every time Neville went on holiday, he tried to bring Seamus and Dean SOMETHING in return. Dean had always returned the favor by bringing him something muggle, and while it didn’t do Neville much good to have that stuff, it was nice. Neville usually didn’t expect gifts in return—he just wanted to be a good friend.

But the LEAST Seamus could have done was bring him something from the World Cup!

“I don’t get WHY you’re so upset,” Seamus grumbled.

“You could have at LEAST brought me a leprechaun. That’s all I’m saying.”

Professor Longbottom's Classroom

Neville didn’t really mind that he didn’t have a classroom to teach in. He was allergic to chalk anyways, so he NEEDED to be out in the fresh open air.
Unlike in days of Professor Sprout, Neville had a much bigger selection of plants to work with. Ever since he had started teaching, more and more students continued to NEWT level Herbology, because the plants got more and more interesting. At least, that was what the students said when asked why they took the class.

Neville liked to think he was making a difference in their lives—through his plants.

Gloomy Feast

No one said a word as they all dug into the chicken on the table. Harry, Ron, and Hermione were nowhere to be found, although none of them had really had any hope they would somehow show up at the feast.

As they all ate in silence, all he could do was hope that whatever they were off doing, it was for the cause. He knew deep down, that had to be what they were doing. They weren’t hiding, he just felt it.

Now they had to face their own problems—Snape as Headmaster, and the Carrows at his side.

A Compliment from Hannah

“I can’t believe what you said to the Carrows, Neville!” Hannah exclaimed as she walked with him to lunch. She had just helped him patch up the newest scratch on his face that he had gotten just moments before after snapping at Alecto.

“It was nothing Hannah,” he insisted, but he couldn’t help but blush.

“Stop being modest! It was brave and daring, you’re really becoming a true Gryffindor,” she told him before giving him a hug and joining her fellow Hufflepuffs at their table.

Somehow, the fact that Hannah was calling him a Gryffindor made it even more special.

Show Me the Magic!

He was going to die. He knew it. The end was near.

He had begged and pleaded for his life, of course, but Uncle Algie was STILL holding him out the window by his ankles. What did he think he was going to do? Suddenly sprout wings and fly away? This was like the time they nearly drowned him in Blackpool Pier…

Suddenly, Algie got distracted and let go, and Neville braced himself for impact. This was it, he was done for!

BOUNCE, BOUNCE, BOUNCE.

To his surprise, he wasn’t hurt—he simply bounced all the way to the garden.

Make a Run for it

Neville had already received one of these in the past. He knew exactly what it was. Everyone did. It was a Howler.

The last time he had seen one, it had been for Ron after he stole his father’s flying car. He could still remember the sound of Mrs. Weasley screaming at him. Neville didn’t even have to think about what this one was for. Hello! He had almost gotten Ron KILLED! He deserved wayyyy worse than this.

Without a single thought, he grabbed the envelope and bloated for the Entrance Hall as onlookers laughed and pointed at his misfortune.

Sugar Quill Surprise

Neville was chewing on the edge of the sugar quill, trying his hardest not to chuckle. Professor Binns was, predictably, not paying attention at all during History of Magic. Instead he just went on and on, oblivious to the fact that every student (save a few Slytherins) were eating candy rather than taking notes.

It had been Seamus’ brilliant idea. Neville was glad he came up with the idea too—they really needed to find ways to entertain themselves in that class.

As everyone smirked and chuckled while eating the treats Seamus provided, Neville concluded that he was a genius.

Anticipation

Neville tried to hold back the tears welling up in his eyes, but he couldn’t stop them. It was strange that he felt so connected to the Headmaster, even when he really had never shown much interest in him. He had never appreciated how great Dumbledore was—and now, he was gone.

Still in a bit of pain from the battle a few nights ago, Luna helped him up, and he wiped the tears from his face before anyone could see. He couldn’t help but fear the future ahead of them.

Now that Dumbledore was gone…who knew what could happen.

Playing with Plants

“Why weren’t you wearing your gloves, Neville?” his Gran asked him as he cleaned the cut on his finger. The young boy was sniffling and crying, tears falling down his round cheeks as she fussed over him.

“I didn’t…I didn’t think the torns…would…would hurt me,” he explained, gasping and hiccupping as the tears continued to fall.

His gran rolled her eyes but finally managed to patch him up, and he calmed down a great deal. She sighed.

“Neville, do me a favor and be careful in Herbology once you get to school! That class will be the death of you!”

Flaming Misfortune

“OUCH! Put it out, put it out!”

“I’m sorry Neville! Stop hopping around and I’ll put it out!” Seamus insisted. Didn’t the third year see that Neville COULDN’T stop, though? His bum was on fire! And it was all Seamus’ fault!

“Put it out!” Neville insisted again. Finally, Seamus was able to reverse the damage, leaving Neville with a pair of scorched pants and a VERY sour attitude. He turned and glared at Seamus.

“Geez mate, read a bloody textbook! Maybe if you actually studied once in a while, you’d stop setting fire to anything that gets in your path!”

Hands on Practice

“D’you think I could transform Malfoy’s ears into bat ears if I tried hard enough?” Neville grumbled. They were sitting in class practicing for their OWLs but ever since Malfoy had caused Neville to fall on his face AGAIN that morning, he had other ideas forming in his mind.

Dean shrugged. “Maybe. I’d go for something more disturbing like…elephant ears,” he suggested with a grin. Neville laughed and attempted to vanish his mouse again but with no luck. He’d never succeed with Malfoy’s ears and he knew it.

“Doesn’t matter…even with bat ears he’d still get more girls than me.”
