“My lord?”

Voldemort turned - running his slender fingers along his wand, not bothering to look up - - in other words, the usual. “Yes, Bella?”

He was handsome. Yes, many years later, he would not remain that way, but that was for the time to come, and maybe he knew it, or at least thought of it, even now - his eyes had, already, a tinge of red. But, in few words, the fact was that he was, for the present, very handsome. The kind of handsome, thought Bellatrix, that could have gotten him just about any girl - if only he would care.

But she was not thinking of him romantically. She had a revering sort of love for him, the kind in which a person is worshipped, looked up to, but not thought of as more than an idol. His powers were, she knew, both great and terrible, and this only added to her awe. Perhaps - no, definitely - she wanted a taste of his power, of the authority he commanded.

“Did you –” she hesitated. It was not like her, hesitation, but Voldemort was someone one did not wish to displease at any cost.

“Yes?”

One would think he was bored, Bellatrix thought. She hesitated again, and then decided to speak up. “Did – have you talked to Jen, lately?”

“Jenna was here yesterday.”

There was something very cool about his tones whenever he spoke of Jenna, Bellatrix had noticed. Not the "cold" cool he employed when speaking of an enemy, but a cold cool he seemed to reserve only for Jenna White. He was used to calling her Bella, used to calling all of them gentle names – something you would not have expected, but something which was his way - but Jenna –

Jenna was never Jen, and Bellatrix wished she knew why. The silvery-haired teenager had worked with them for a fortnight, now, and - to give credit where credit is due - she had definitely proved her mettle. Yet -- he had never called her Jenna in front of any of the death eaters.

For a moment, Bellatrix was quiet.

“Is there any special reason you ask this?” Voldemort asked, his eyes still not on her. His tones were cooler -- more bored.

Bellatrix hesitated. “I met her, today.”

“And I will meet her tomorrow night,” Voldemort returned carelessly. “I have an assignment for her.”

“Did you really ask Lucius not to talk to her?” Bellatrix blurted out. Such an un-Bellatrix action, such un-Bellatrix abruptness! But he made her nervous, at times. Perhaps often.

He turned to her, and narrowed his eyes. For a moment, Bellatrix thought she might have said something wrong, but then he spoke, and his voice was still very careless. “Do you know, Bella,” he said slowly, almost casually. “That she gets too close to people?”

“I –”

“She has been here for two weeks. She is, no doubt, the pride of my new recruits. But I have not asked her to kill anyone, yet. Should I tell you why?”

“My lor –”

“Because,” Voldemort continued, ignoring Bellatrix very completely. “I do not think she can kill.”

Ignorance - one of the things Bellatrix Black most hated, and one of the things Bellatrix Black would not stand. “Jen would kill anyone for you!” she interrupted, and her arms were crossed against her chest.

He smiled. “She would not kill you.”

Bellatrix felt as if someone had stuck a knife into her heart, maybe even twisted it around a bit. Her jaw dropped open and, for a second, she had no words to respond with. Then -- “Me?” she asked, clearly stunned.

“A good death eater, Bella," and now he was examining the wand again, almost as if it were prey. "Kills at my command. Lucius and you -" he inclined his head towards her - "Would kill at my command. Jenna? She gets too close to people. She is close to you – she can not kill you. She is relatively close to Lucius – she can not kill him, either. Though she might prefer to kill him over you, I think,” he added, with a slight smile.

Internally, Bellatrix shivered. “You would not want her to kill us.”

“I agree,” Voldemort returned, and he sounded humoured. “But if she is so unhappy at my ordering you and Lucius to stay away from her – well, I shall have to talk to her, it seems.”

“I did not mean –”

“I do not need you making excuses for her, Bella. You may go.”

Wow, you're fast ... made to order.

Oh, but I DON'T write them at the same time, OttySt.<3 I finished The Second Road to Death a good while back, and my new fic = finished in MS Word, too. That's why I put it up. Plus, it's short. xD

It's cool that you have your stories all finished and written out. I'm usually ahead of my readers by ten pages. I find it's a nice headway especially if I get writer's block but I'v enever had a whole fic finished when I post it. Wow. You're so cool Maxie Human Nature isn't written past the train chapters and the X-Mas fic ... what's posted is all that's been written but don't tell my other readers. They'll lynch me. I should get crackin' on them, no? Accio inspiration!

Neways, I'll probably disappear through November because of Nano. I really mean to win it this year. They'll publish one copy of your novel if you win it. Special code and all ... it's in the forums somewhere. They did it last year too. Of course I didn't win then either

And yes, Dickens and Caroll are two of my bigger inspirations, which isn't to say I write Alice knock-off's seriously next to Vampires and zombies that is one of the most used tropes and the misspelling was cute

Umm, twenty chapters. Though I've only posted two, till now. But twenty is NON-EXISTENT by my standards, seeing how Us has more than one hundred updates, and there are still more to come. =DD
She doesn't really want to be a DE... she's just fascinated by the Dark Arts, sort of obsessed with a "how" - as in, how can people become so heartless by following a specific path? She really doesn't know what to make of it, and she would have left, only now she can't because of... reasons.

There was moisture in the air, the kind that settles on leaves in pearls of translucent sheen, the kind that settles in hearts in the form of another thing of beauty - another thing of beauty, another ever-lasting joy.

In the distance, a purple flower raised its little head, welcoming the onset of night; and the grass ran, still wet from the spurt of rain it had bathed in earlier that day, as Varius Lestrange's feet crunched against it, their sound a happy one. A fruit-laden branch hung from a tree, and Varius pushed it out of his way as he whisked out of sight, his profile sharp in the light of the lamp that was a low moon.

“Varius, you fool! Come back!”

The only half-angry voice was Andra Castle's, but Varius Lestrange did not seem too intent on obeying it. The eighteen-year old stuck his tongue out at his tall cousin - she was pretty tall, as tall as him - running off with what was supposed to be her favourite bracelet.

“Catch me if you can!” he cried, waving the thing at her. It caught the moonlight, shimmered in it, and Andra gasped - a heavy diamond had crowned the piece of jewellery's band of platinum until only a few minutes ago, but it was no longer in place - it was, clearly, gone.

“WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY BRACELET! VARIUS!”

She literally lunged at him and Varius, who had not expected this, failed to whisk out of her sight in time. She managed to grab his arm – and, consequently, sent both of them crashing into the ground, where they collapsed in a heap. Andra was on her feet first, mock fury in her eyes, but then she looked at him, tangled in the wet grass, and laughter rose in her eyes.

“You’re an idiot, Var, you're such an idiot,” she said, holding out a hand to help him up.

“So are you,” He grinned, refusing to take her hand - ah, silly, pretended arrogance. He stood up and dusted his robes, but the grass clung to his hair, and Andra laughed out loud. “Why do I have silly cousins like you, Anderz?”

Anderz - the nickname he knew she hated most. He had used it on purpose, and Andra's reaction was exactly as he had expected it to be. “VARIUS LESTRANGE! IF YOU CALL ME THAT ONCE MORE, just ONCE MORE, I will -”

“Gotcha!”

He ran off once more, as fast as his legs could carry him. She grinned to herself, made ready to follow - and then she laughed, and did not. Ah yes, for once in her - their - life, Andra Castle let her favourite cousin get away with a prank meant to infuriate her. Let him get away with a prank - because the sky had dulled, the depths of eve approached and that meant, clearly meant, that she had to change. Change into her dress for the ball, because tonight would be grand.

She would, finally, be the Hostess.
