Chapter #11
The Eye of Fate
“The octave of aetheral vibrations becomes a gorgeous rainbow.”

Malfoy had read, on more than one account, the beliefs of wizard-hating medieval muggles. They were a set of highly prejudiced, oft-wrong hypotheses, some of which included the faith that men and women with magic need be burnt in a sacred place, or else they would reappear.

One would have thought muggles of that time – a time when startling advances were beginning to be made – would be wiser than to be believe in this sort of human “immortality,” but it was not so.

Then again, it was probably because many wizards and witches had survived stakes due to wands -- but, though sacred places were still a yes, muggles were beginning to grow wiser to the ways of the magical – they knew, for one instance, about wands, now. Wandless, Malfoy thought bitterly as he was dragged inside the temple, a great building that had long been abandoned. What would – could –he possibly do without a wand?

They men shoved him into a huge, stone-floored cell with a small window that opened into the cell next, and shut the heavy 'door' behind them. For a long while, Malfoy heard the cold sound of their footsteps outside – perhaps they went about similar business, he could not make out – but, once it had died, the first thing he attempted was to open the door.

It would not budge, not even after he had thrown himself against it three or four times – an action that resulted in a slow but rather stinging pain in his now-bruised, left side. The fifth time he tried, he heard a rap on the tiny window to his left. At first suspicious, he ceased all activities. When the rap came again, he went over.

It was a small, very dusty thing with a broken pane of wood, the window. Draco narrowed his eyes, pretty sure that the cell next held another prisoner, but not ready to take any chances. But the rap came again, then a voice that he could not make out and then, in desperation, Draco Malfoy had smashed his fist, very very hard, into the little window.

There was the crunch of wooden splinters, the crunch of the little bones in his hand breaking – and a yell of pain that was the direct follow-up of the last crunch. Then a head of full, black hair poked itself into the window, and words had evaporated.

“Bad thing you did there, man.”

Malfoy winced, unable to move his hand, for the ache that shot up his arm each time he tried was unbearable to the last degree. Pain made him curt, his voice anything but pleasant. “Excuse me, but who the heck are you?” he asked rudely. The man – or, rather, head – in the window did not, after all, seem a wizard-hunter. The question was, who was he and what in the name of world was he doing down here?

“Bowman Wright, Head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports,” the man replied cheerfully, and Malfoy’s eyes nearly popped out in surprise.

“We’ve read about you!” he exclaimed. “You’re the slimy-haired dude who invented the Golden Snitch after losing an eye, fighting muggles! Bowman Wright, the One-Eyed Hero!”

Bowman blinked, his grin fading for a second. “Excuse me?”

Malfoy bit his lip, not sure he had been supposed to say that. “Well,” he began. “The fact is, I know I’m really pretty and all, but I’m also, at the moment, wandless. Some stupid wizard-hunters snatched my wand, might even have snapped it into two by now. They have...” A stupid blood-traitor? No, he could not say that to Bowman’s face. “Someone I know locked up, somewhere around here. We have to get out. Bottom line is, help me and the world will remember you as the man who aided the world’s most beautiful guy ever.”

Bowman chuckled. “You look like a mini-veela, boy, but you’re on.” The head vanished for a second and, to Malfoy’s amazement, the window began to grow larger, until it was the size of a good-sized door. He walked through, coming face-to-face with the man that was Bowman Wright – a tall wizard with a well-kept beard, and hair that seemed – no other comparison would be, Malfoy thought, satisfactory – more un-tamable than Granger’s bush. In his right hand, he held a short, birch wand, and he waved it, as if for effect.

“You have a wand,” Malfoy stated dryly, at a loss for anything else to say.

Bowman grinned, wide. “Them muggles came at me when I least expected,” he laughed. “Could never find my wand, the sillies.” He laughed again, and waved his wand as if for effect. “Sillies, sillies, I was just going to leave. That was, of course, before you started banging the door in the next room. So you, boy.” He stopped suddenly, and gave Malfoy a long, hard, rather mistrustful look. “You. You from up north? Eyes that colour.”

Malfoy sighed. “I’m not from up north,” he said, finally. “I’m from a century later on.”

Bowman’s eyes were round as galleons. “My God,” he said, clearly stunned. “From a century later on? I find it hard to believe that, but your clothes speak volumes. Too fancy for our times, man, too fancy. But – wait a second. What was that stuff about a Golden Snitch? About a broken eye?” He suddenly seemed eager, maybe even a little frightened. Malfoy blinked.

“Would you believe me if I told you I was asleep at the moment I said that, and that I like to talk in my sleep?” He asked nervously.

Bowman grinned. “Nope. Come on, boy, tell me, I need proof that you’re not pulling my leg –” His words were cut as there was the sound of a creak, and the door to the room flew open. Four men – fire-topped sticks, their favourite item of weapon against magic, held high in the air – marched into the cell. Bowman let out a yelp of surprise, and then several things happened at once.

The men’s jaws dropped open as they took one good look around the cell (“Black magic!” they screamed, pointing to the door that had once been window), Bowman and Malfoy seemed to come an instinctive agreement to rush outside (“The door!”), one of the men grabbed at the back of Malfoy’s robes (thoughts along the lines of “Oooh, shiny cloth,” perhaps?), Malfoy was sent, hurling backwards, and crashed into a wall (His already broken fist suffered further, very painful damage), Bowman turned around with some difficulty, (“Ooof, I really need to lose some weight!”), one of the men stuck a burning stick into his face (there was an excruciating yell), and then there was silence.

Dust rose from the floor and, when it cleared, Malfoy could see four men on the ground. They lay sprawled like books a child has thrown in a tantrum, clearly stunned, their sticks no more. He lowered his wand, his right hand aflame with indescribable pain. With an effort, he bit back a yelp and looked up at Bowman – only to wince terribly. One of the round man’s eyes was blotched and red, and it was clear one of the men had managed to poke one of the fire-topped sticks into it.

“My God,” Malfoy breathed. “You have a wand, do something about –”

Bowman shook his had, cut across. “I can’t.” His voice quavered, shook like a scared, little child’s. “I never learned medicinal magic, I can only fix minor bruises or I would have fixed your hand till now.” For a moment, both of them were quiet, a silence that would have stretched if rough, though faraway, voices had not floated into the room.

They came from a distance, but slowly grew louder, and a look of worry crossed Bowman's face. “We have to get out of here,” he said urgently.

Get out. Yes, Malfoy thought, he had better do it while he was still in the company of someone who had a wand, someone who was also good at magic. He raised his head to nod – and then surprised his own self by shaking it, no.

“You crazy, boy?” Bowman asked. “Why don’t you want to get out?”

“Draco,” he said. “The name’s Draco Malfoy, and I – can’t.” It took him a mountainous effort to say that, but he could not help it. It seemed automatic, like words that not he, but his tongue itself, spoke. “There was a girl with me, they have her too. I have to find her.”

He did not know why he was so intent on rescuing that filthy blood-traitor, but perhaps... perhaps she was depending on him. He had never been in the company of someone who needed his protection, before - it brought out a side of his personality that stunned even himself.

“You’re wandless,” Bowman said, scratching his head. “How do you expect –”

“Give me your wand.”

“What?”

“Give me – oh, forget it.” This man has the intelligence of a stray donkey. Giving up on words, Malfoy reached out and snatched Bowman’s wand out of his hand. The tall man swore, but Malfoy only flicked it and said, “Accio Draco’s wand!” Then he threw the wand back at Bowman, who caught it with a slightly disgruntled look on his face.

For several seconds, they waited, but nothing happened. “It’s not coming,” Bowman said, with a shrug of his rather broad shoulders. “They must have snapped it by –” He stopped. As the wand flew through the air to reach them, Bowman’s wide grin faded for, along with its buzz came the sound of heavy footsteps.

Malfoy’s wand flew into his cupped hands the same moment as a dozen men stepped into the room, their eyes in harmony with a collective hatred for magic, their countenances writ with distaste fierier than the fires they carried.
