Between the impressive statue of Rowena Ravenclaw and the set of double stairs leading to the dormitories is a hidden tunnel, one which slopes down steeply between the walls of the Ravenclaw Common Room and the outer stone surface of the castle itself. From the top, it is not immediately clear where the bottom of the passage rests. Best explore it to find out!
If you dare to use the stairs down, be sure to hold on to the thing iron railing running all the way along the left side. The steps are quite steep and worn with age, and there are a lot of them until the passage levels out into a low tunnel. The opening is only wide enough for one person to go forward at a time, so don't even think of trying to cut ahead of someone if you attempt to take a group through the passage. You may want to hold your nose as well; there is a faint scent of mildew and wastewater permeating this secret tunnel.
What is this passage? Is it an old water and sewage pipe, no longer needed by the castle? Or is a deliberate exit from the Ravenclaw Common Room, placed here in case of emergencies and opportunities for mischief managed? Better follow this tunnel all the way to where it dumps out. Word is... there could be something useful on the other side.

Without any heed to anything anyone might say to stop her from entering an unknown, mysterious, and strange doorway, Evie headed straight in. The only way to find answers was to dive right in. "There's lots of stairs," she called back to the others in the common room. Really, that's all she could see. It was also quite dark, so Evie took out her wand and muttered Lumos to give herself some light.
She glanced back once to make sure no one objected (but for real, she would just ignore them if they did) and then started taking the stairs. "Very steep stairs," she called back again as a warning for anyone who followed her. She was only a few steps down, but it was quite smelly. Evie wrinkled her nose and waited for anyone to follow her.

Leo headed through the door and into the passage after Evangeline. Since it was pretty dark he lighted the tip of his wand as he walked forward at a quick pace down the stairs. He had to catch up with the girl. He glanced back to see if the others were following before he called out "Evangline? Evangeline? Where are you?"
Hopefully his shouts didn't make the shaking and rumbling increase. Leo let his wand both light the path and the steep stairs ahead as he called back over his shoulder "Watch your steps and hold onto the railing." He didn't want anyone to trip down here at least of all himself.
When Leo finally caught up with Evangeline he engulfed her in a quick hug before he said. "Evangeline, you shouldn't run ahead like that. We don't know where this passage leads or if it holds any dangers. Are you all right?"

"Mr. Kitridge!" Austin called out after him. It was dark, and Austin couldn't tell if the outlines he were seeing where ghosts, or his head of house. But once he caught up, he saw that not only was it Mr. Kitridge, the librarian had found the fifth year. "Good, you found her." There was no need for Austin to go on a 'don't run off' rant. He was sure the head of house had done that, and it really wasn't Austin's place to say. He wasn't older than her, nor was he a professor. So instead he lite the tip of his wand, creating more light for the three of them, and anyone else following.
"Where do you think this passage leads?" Austin asked, trying to get a good look at the rest of the passage. Hopefully it leads somewhere good.

Alright, alriiiight, she was stopped! She could hear the librarian calling after her frantically, but she couldn't reply because he was all yelling about trying to find her. She was okay, okay? See? There he was. Err... hugging her. Evie awkwardly patted the man's back before getting scolded by him. Yeah, she knew there could be danger and stuff. "I know, sir, that's why I was going in to check it out." Duh. She did hold on to the rusty rail, though, just to make him happy. "Yes, I'm quite wonderful, thank you for asking." No harm done, no bumps, no bruises. There was nothing down here just yet.
Evie lifted her wand light to see a younger boy follow behind the librarian. Apparently he had been worried, too. Come onnn, why was everyone so paranoid she was gonna DIE? If the school was really that unsafe, don't you think they'd shut it down?
"Can I keep going?" she asked the librarian. It was just stairs. No danger.

Okay.
Okay.
Dark. Narrow. Kind of stinky.
No one's used this place for years.
Unable to squeeze ahead of the child in front of her, Bambi craned her neck to peer down into the shadowy darkness. Okay, steep steps. "Lumos," she muttered and instantly felt better with the light coming from her wand, even if it was mostly shining on the boy's head. She wasn't scared or anything, but more light meant less darkness which meant less chance of a bat flying in her face or something.
"How far do you think it goes?" she piped up, again trying to peer down. They were on one of the tallest towers in the castle - even if the passage didn't go underground it was still a looooooong way down.

She had let Leobald and a few students go first, figuring she could bring up the rear. Just in case something tried to attack them from the rear. Not that she thought something really would, but her recent encounter with the nifflers in the Chamber had led her to be more suspicious than normal.
"I'd say keep going, Miss Shacklebolt." In her mind, she quickly reviewed a full retinue of defensive spells that would work on nifflers. She wound her way down the steep, spiral stairs, all the while imagining the floor giving way and half of Ravenclaw House plummeting towards the ground. Cushioning Charm for sure.
But soon that wasn't necessary, as the passage seemed to level out. "We're not going down anymore," she observed to the group in general. Her hand brushed up against the wall and she recoiled at the wet, slimy feeling. "And I think we're underground." Definitely time to wipe her hand off on her robes.

You walk and walk for what feels like hours on the stairs.
The stairs that felt like they were levelling out are now becoming steeper again, as you start climbing upwards towards the surface again. Hold a hand on the rail. It’s a very long way down if you fall!
As you climb upwards the tunnel becomes brighter and brighter and then the passage comes to an abrupt end in a new door. The door leads you to a dark room where the smell of quills and parchments lays thick in the air but the most prominent sight in the room is the 7 pairs of cat eyes that are staring right at you.

This was taking FOREVER.
It had been cool the first five minutes, and then mildly exciting the next half hour after that. Then she'd been just a little bit curious about when it would end for another five minutes when her boredom finally settled in. Ugh. Had they walked through the earth to the Pacific Ocean or something?
Wait, were they going up now?! The tunnel was finally leveling out! Oh, no, wait. It was just climbing. Well this definitely counted as her daily workout. Following the three people in front of her she climbed for what felt like ages as well until they finally came upon a doorway, which she walked through eagerly.
Bambi blinked at the sight that awaited her, and raised her wand into a more defensive position. Creepy cat eyes were creepy. Also the smell had improved significantly. "No clue," she replied to the girl who'd spoken up, her voice low, "but I think we've left the sewers. It smells like stationery in here."
She figured everybody noticed the cat eyes and she didn't have any idea what that was all about so she stayed quiet on the topic. Quiet, and very ready if something decided to pounce.

"Under the castle? Cool." Honestly, Austin wasn't scared at all. He lived for this sort of stuff, and was glad he was able to be a part of it. Walking ahead, he caught up with the fifth year. Who he now learned was named Evangeline. A nice name indeed. "Isn't this exciting?! We get to be the first to discover something new about the castle. And if it's a secret passage, it's possible that no one will be able to use it after us. We could be the last people to ever walk this passage!" Austin tried to make conversation. But he was so excited that it seemed as if his words were trampling over one another.
He wanted to run ahead of everybody, to try to get a better look at where this passage ended. But he figured it was a better idea to stay with the group. They didn't know what was at the end.

Hogsmede?! This was exciting! Even though they had found their destination, their adventure didn't seem over yet. The possibilities about this passage was unbelievable. They could go to Hogsmede any time they wanted! So long as the owner of the shop didn't mind. Or he/she didn't know. Anyways...
What did they do now? "Now what?" Austin called out to the professors. They could walk the streets of Hogsmede without the students. The streets would be bare, and they could go waltz through the shops and see everything there was without anyone in their ways. But.. wait...
A passage way goes two ways. "Wait, guys, does this mean people have been getting into Hogwarts?" Austin began to get scared. People were getting into the school, right under their noses. It could have been when everyone was asleep. What if something happened? Ophelia was right up there asleep, and defenseless. Anything could have happened to her.
Head into Scrivenshaft's! This part of the adventure is over but go get your shop on!

Now what? Now it was high time she replaced that eagle feather quill with the broken nib.. "I think the least we can do is give the shop our patronage, Mister Moore. We did barge in, after all." She looked for the door. "Ah, the door. Let's go in, everyone! We'll have to have a chat with the shopkeeper, but you lot can certainly just take a stroll." It was good timing, actually. "Today is the Hogsmeade weekend anyways, so you'll get a few minutes' head start!"
As for Austin's other question.. "Highly doubtful. I think someone would have noticed if people were just popping into the common room. The door was only visible because of the damage to the statue."

....... What? Hogsmeade? They trekked up and down Mt. Sinai for Hogsmeade? Well, she supposed that was okay, but Evie thought she'd rather take the normal way. It was less strenuous than the mountain of stairs they just climbed. But still, it was quite an adventure getting there, and now there were cats. Since they didn't seem to be in any danger, Evie pet one of the kitties on the head before following the professor's advice and heading towards the entrance to the shop.
On her way she heart Tanner mention the damage to the statue was what caused the hidden passageway to appear. "What happened with the statue anyway? Like, what was that mini earthquake?" Did she know? Was it going to happen and open passageways to other places? How COOL would that be?
