Default Broom Care

The Broomshed

The Broomshed is a place where the Hogwarts school brooms are stored when not being used by students participating in Flying Class or Quidditch. The shed is located one hundred yards from the Quidditch Pitch and appears to be on the verge of collapse to the untrained eye. Carefully open the door that miraculously hangs on rusted hinges and inside you'll find the broomsticks hanging from the ceiling, glass cauldrons and leaning up against the walls. Select your broomstick with care before heading out to class and return it to it's resting place when class is over. At the center of the room is a large wooden table surrounded by benches - take care not to get any splinters if you decide to take a seat while tuning up your broom!

Basic Broomshed Rules:
1. RP your character getting a broom for class/returning a broom/caring for a broom, etc. Please be aware that there are no Firebolts in the shed nor can you find the 'old' Quidditch Equipment Trunk in this shed.
2. Broomsticks in here are for flying practice, Flying Class, and Quidditch uses only. If your character sneaks in to take a broom for a flight by the lake or on other areas of school grounds, expect a loss of House Points and/or Detention. This rule also applies to playing with Quidditch equipment on school grounds or in the Castle itself. Remember - Quidditch and Flying only happens in the Practice Pitch thread and/or Flying Lesson threads.
3. The Broomshed is not a place for public displays of affection (PDA) - violators will lose House Points and gain a date in the Dungeons (aka, Detention).
4. Observe SS Board Rules at all times.
5. Have fun!

Vickers watched the second coat of polish dry again, turning the buffing cloth around in his hands as he did. He reached out and tapped the hazy finish and, feeling it was dried up well enough, he wrapped the buffing towel around the shaft and started to do the yanking-buffing technique he developed earlier. He continued this action until he reached he bottom of the shaft, even polishing the metal braces that held the tail twigs in place.

He ran the wood buffing a bit longer and with more intensity the second time around, determined to have his broom shine like glass. He buffed using his technique till his arms ached, and after the last few strokes, he finally set the buffing cloth aside and examined his work.

Very shiny. Looked almost like brand new. Custom detailing.... he was good at this heh.

After a few minutes Ella looked down at her watch and smiled, time was up. She checked the handle out, noting that it had that hazy finish it was supposed to. "Good." she said with a nod. Next she was supposed to...right, grab a towel and buff the polish. She got a clean towel and began buffing in the same circular pattern, making sure to be gently so she didn't mess anything up. No way did she want to have to start over. Once she had finished buffing the first time, Ella started again, moving gently in the circular motion until she had buffed the entire thing for a second time. Looking down, she frowned when she noticed she could not yet see her reflection. "Merlin's beard." she said, frustrated. She grabbed the towel and started buffing for the third time, making sure to get every inch of the handle. When she had finished she looked down and sure enough, her reflection was smiling back at her. "Thank goodness." Ella said, placing her towel down on the table.

He walked over to the table and picked up a small metal box. "This is a broom care kit. Inside you'll find a bottle of concentrated cleaner, polish for the broom handle, and tail twig clippers."

"Everyone, please grab a kit and return to your seats."
Tayla stood up once more and grabbed a kit. She returned to her seat then opened the kit. Seeing the objects inside made her excited. She didn't like chores, but cleaning a broom was much more interesting than the usual chore.

He crouched down and grabbed a bucket which he placed on the floor. Vindictus then poured a cap full of the cleanser into the bucket and stuck his wand into it.

"Aguamenti!"

Water shot out of his wand and the bucket began to fill up with water.

"Finite!"

He pulled his wand out of the bucket and pointed to the sudsy water.

"Once you've filled the bucket, put your wand away and grab a sponge out of the basket," he instructed and grabbed one himself. The basket of sponges was located between two other baskets - one contained blue towels, the other red rags. "First, you want to clean the handle. Stick the sponge into the sudsy water and give it a squeeze; if you don't then you'll have a huge mess to clean up later."

Wink.

Once you're finished cleaning the handle, carefully plunge the tail twigs into the bucket. Then stir clockwise seven times and submerge for another 2 minutes. Then we have the messy part."

Grin.

[3]"The towel you used to dry off the handle - place it on the floor next to the bucket. You'll need another towel, too, so grab one. Then take the broom out of the bucket and hold it over the towel that's on the floor. With the second towel, gently pat the tail twigs until they're no longer dripping. When finished, place the broom on the table so that you can clean up."

[4]"Use Scourgify to rid the bucket of its watery contents and use the two towels to mop up any water. Place the towels in the towel bin and the sponges in the basket located to the left of the fireplace."

"Now show me how you can remove the yucky dirt and grime from your brooms!"

OOC: This should take you at least 4 posts. Be descriptive and have some fun (just don't set anything on fire). I'll post the next step around 8pm EST tomorrow.

"When you're finished trimming the tail twigs, place the clippers back into the supply kit and toss the teensy twig bits into the fire. Then grab a red rag and open the can of polish."

To demonstrate what he meant, he pulled two items out Kurumi's kit.

"Tail twig clippers," Vindictus said as he held the silver clippers up for everyone to see. He then put it back and took out the polish jar. "Fleetwood's High-Finish Handle Polish - the best polish on the market." He put the polish jar back into the kit and reached for a red rag.

"Grab a red rag, unscrew the lid and dip the rag into the jar. Scoop out about a Knut's size glob of polish and then make sure you put the lid back on the jar. Work the polish into the rag for about a minute or two - this action will warm up the polish and make it easier to apply."

Tiptoeing around the desk to make sure to get as little of the water on the floor on his shoes as possible, Lewis placed the broom carefully on his desk. At least he wouldn't have to mop the whole thing up himself. He had a wand for that. Nonetheless, he moved the towel on the floor with his foot so it was now covering part of the little lake puddle on the floor before placing the other towel next to it.

He just looked at the two towels for a moment before stepping on them in an attempt to make them soak the water up more. Hey, they made funny squisihing noises when he did that. Squish Squish Squish Squish. Despite all his efforts there was still water on the floor however so he bent down a little to point his wand at it. "Scourgify." His wand started to literally suck part of the water off the floor, and Lewis couldn't help but make noises like the Teletubbies - a vacuum cleaner to accompany this.

Once the floor was more or less dry again, Lewis dropped the two towels into the bucket along with the sponge and then walked to the front to return them. Placing the towels into the towel bin and the sponge into the basket next to the fireplace, Lewis returned to his seat with his bucket still in hand. Great. Now there was a little bit of water in it again, seeing as the two towels had been soaked. Again pointing the wand into the bucket he muttered "Scourgify" until all the water was gone.

More labor? Heh. Vindi sure is making them hardworking right now.

Unto the tail twigs clipping and broom polishing here we go! Beezus jotted down the steps given by their Professor. Then she took out the tail twig clippers from her own kit and started inspecting the broom's tail for any jagged and uneven ones.

Seeing some, she held the clipper carefully and snipped the twigs that seemed to be out of place on the broom's tail. Snip. Snip. Snip. Beezus pulled her broom away to see if there were more twigs that weren't supposed to be there. "None." she chirped as she returned the tail twig clipper into her kit and threw the twig bits into the fire.

Tail twig clippers, tail twig clippers, tail twig clippers...

That was really hard to say when you said it fast a couple of times. Good thing Lewis only said in his head or else it probably would have been a little embarrassing. But then again, nobody was paying much attention to him anyway. Back to the thing though. The Tail Twig Clippers.

Peeking inside the kit on his desk for a moment in search for the object the professor had shown them, Lewis pulled out what he thought was the tail twig clipper. It definitely look liked he could clip something with it so it was probably the right thing.

Was he supposed to shorten them to a certain lenght? Was it like getting your hair cut? Lewis squinted down at the tail twigs of the school broom on his desk curiously. Did they grow? Or was he just supposed to clip off the damaged parts? Probably that right? Yes.

So there he was clipping away on the tail twigs until they looked well less-damaged. They weren't the same length now though, was that a problem? Huh. Seeing as this wasn't HIS broom and he didn't really want to ask stupid questions, Lewis just shrugged to himself and moved to carry the twig bits he had clipped off to the front and throw them into the fire.

She referred back to her parchment on what to do next. It was time for Polishing! Yaaaayyy! Beezus carefully took out the polishing jar from her kit and placed it on the table. And then, turning over to the side of the baskets, she picked up a red rag as she yawned. Maybe she was kinda enjoying what they were doing but she surely still needed more rest.

Moving back to her table, the young eaglette unscrewed the lid cap of the polishing jar and with the use of her right hand, she dipped the red rag unto the polishing mixture and scooped a fair amount of polish. 'Is this enough?' she asked herself mentally as she looked at the polish already on the rag. 'It seems to need just a BIT more,' she replied to herself and with that, she dipped the rag into the jar once more and added a bit of the polish on the amount already on the rag. Afterwards, she placed the lid back tightly on the jar and allowed the polish to stay on the rag for about a minute. Vindy just said it would help polishing easier right? Better to just follow what the old man says.

Tayla wiped the broom handle as cleanly as she could. When she was content that all the dirt and grime were gone, she pat the handle dry with a blue towel. "I wonder if there's a special reason why the towel's blue..." Tayla thought to herself.

Once the handle was cleaned, she held the broom the opposite way and carefully plunged the tail twigs into the bucket as instructed. She stirred seven times slowly and counter-clockwise, then left the tail twigs submerged for two minutes. Checking her watch to see the two minutes were up, she stirred again seven times the other direction and again, left the twigs submerged for two minutes.

Tayla laughed softly at herself. All the stirring made her feel like she was brewing something, like how some Muggles depicted witches in front of a large cauldron.

Elise stepped toward her broom after all the cleaning up was done and paid rapt attention to Professor Vindictus. So next step was clipping the tail twigs. Picking up the broom, she turned it so the tail faced her and pulled out a sheet of rough paper. She would've thrown it earlier, but she'd been rushing to class. Setting it under the broom's tail, she opened the kit and extracted the clips.

Finding the twigs with split ends, she clipped those. She clipped the ones that were plain out of place too.

Clip. Clip. Clip.

About five minutes later, she couldn't quite see any more twigs that needed clipping. Feeling proud, she took the paper full of clippings and emptied it into the fire. Stuffing the paper back into her pocket, she checked her parchment for the next step.

She stretched her right arm for a while, since it got kinda sore from holding out the rag for a minute or so because she followed what Professor Vindictus told them about letting it work on the rag so it would be easier to apply.

And true enough, when Beezus started polishing the broom handle, it was so much easier! The polish seemed to just travel along the handle smoothly as she rubbed it. "Circular motion..circle..circle.." the eaglette decided to identify how she was rubbing the rag against the broom handle in a singsong way. First, she polished the upper part and as she finishes that part, she moves her grip lower and rubs the part that she left. The same method repeated until she had polished every part of the broom handle.

Beezus inspected it, turning it around and around to make sure she had polished its entirety. "Five minutes.." she murmured as she allowed the polish to dry, looked at her watch to take note of the time so she'd know when to continue her work. And that was to be after five minutes.

Once he had returned to his seat, Lewis put the tail twig clippers - hehe - back into kit and took out the polish jar. Holding it before his eyes to get a closer look, he turned it in his hands a couple of times, before reaching for a piece of parchment and his quill to copy down the polish's name. He was going to get one of those things too. For his broom. Still sounded weird: his broom.

Grabbing the red rag he had taken along earlier from the floor, Lewis moved to unscrew the lid of the polish thing and dipped the rag into the polish. Oh okay, that wasn't going to work very well like that. He put more pressure on it through the rag to be able to scopp some of the polish out of the jar. Was that about Knut sized? Err. Well, the more the better, right? Or something.

How was he supposed to put the lid back on with only one hand? Would the rag prevent the polish to get on the desk when he set it there for just a second? Hopefully. And if not, it was out of wood too and could do with some polishing. So, doing exactly that Lewis carefully put the lid back on the jar of polish before reaching for the rag again.

Work the polish into the rag? Rubbing the rag between his fingers a little in an attempt to do just that, Lewis repeated the process a couple of times until even his fingers felt like they had been freshly polished. They were so shiny.

When five minutes have passed, Beezus then grabbed a clean towel and wiped the broom handle of the buffs and remains of the polish in small circular motions. After doing so, she turned to her parchment again and found out she had to repeat the same procedure.

The eaglette pouted a bit. Vindy REALLY wanted them to work, eh?

Pulling the red rag, she grabbed the jar and lifted its lid to open it again. Then she dipped the rag into it and scooped a Knut's size glob of polish and allowed it to work on the rag for a few minutes.

As she waited, she looked around. Her classmates are all getting very busy with their own polishing. Others however were still on the first step. Merlin bless them. They needed to work faster than that. Or else, they won't be able to finish if the time for that subject would run off.

When a minute had passed, she started. Doing the same as what she had done earlier on. Rubbing the broom handle around and around in a circular motion. RUB. RUB. RUB. Until all of the broom's handle had been polished.

Beezus then waited for another five minutes until the polish on the handle dried. "And wipe..wipe..wipe," she mumbled as she grabbed another clean towel and buffed off the polish from it. "Ooohh..glassy," she later commented when she finished. She knew she did the proper polishing since she was seeing her worn out face on the handle. "Oh, I look so tired," Beezus said as she used the handle as a mirror and cupped her face.

Elise dusted her hands and made her way back to her broom, taking a red rag on the way there so that she wouldn't have to get up later. Now, to open the polish. Opening the kit, she pulled the bottle of polish and held it in her right hand. She hated opening bottles, it was always hard on left handers like her.

Twisting hard, she sighed. Flipping it over, she hit it once on the bottom before turning it back up and trying again.

Twist.

And it opened. Dipping the rag into the jar, she scooped out some polish onto the rag. Estimating the size of a knut, she shook her head. There wasn't enough polish on her rag. Scooping some more, she nodded to herself in approval before folding the rag into the mixture and working it in.

Minerva was sitting waiting for the professor when she realized she didn't put her second coat on her broom. She went back to the front and got the polish and the blue towel. Minerva went back to her broom and began the circular motion putting the polish back on the broom. Once she had put the polish on the broom for the second time she waited for five minutes.

Seeing as Sierra was now finished trimming the tail twigs, she made her way back to the supply kit she'd been using and returned the clippers back to their rightful place. She then gathered up the twig bits she'd cut off and tossed them into the fire. Burn, baby, burn.

Looking up at Vindictus so as to follow along with what he was doing, Sierra reached for a red rag then opened the can of polish. She fought the urge to roll her eyes as Vindictus showed them what each part of the kit looked like. Really?! Did some of the students not know?! Muggle-borns...

Now, ...what next?

Okay, the rag was full of that polish thing now so he was probably read to get started on the handle, right? Carefully Lewis put the rag on the broom handle and started rubbing it over it in a circular motion. Aaaaaalll the way down to the twigs and back up again and turn the whole broom and repeat the process. Hey, this was kinda fun.

...

And now he had to wait for about five minutes. Sitting back in his chair Lewis turned the rag around in his hands a couple of times while glancing around the room at all the other people. Did they all play Quidditch too? Hopefully they didn't. They all looked so strong and awesome. Somehow he felt a little nauseous only thinking about the upcoming match against Gryffindor.

Right, five minutes. That had been about five minutes right? At least the handle looked dry again. Or more or less so anyway. Now on to get ANOTHER towel. The professor was going to have a lot of washing to do after this class. Dashing to the front to get yet another of the blue towels, Lewis then proceeded to buff off the dried polish softly just like the professor had demonstrated.

The Broomshed was beginning to smell like the Fleetwood factory floor and not in a good way. Seriously, someone needs to create an odor-free broom polish. This is starting to smell rather revolting.

"When you're finished, please clean up your area. Repack the broom care kit you used and return it to the stack. Polishing rags go in the rag bin to my left and don't forget to place the brooms on the rack next to the door. Once you've done all of that, you're dismissed," explained Vindictus. "Homework for the lesson will be posted shortly."

Taylor listern as the PRofessor talked, trying to ignore the horrible smile from the polish. Tay cleaned up the area she was at. She repacked the broom kit she used and walked over to the stack. Taylor placed it carefully on the stack and twirl going back to the place she was at. She picked up the rag she used to polish the broom and put it in the rag bin to the professor's left. Then she went back and put the broom unto the rack, careful to not damage or dirty the broom she cleaned up. After that she was done, so she went to the professor. "Thank you for the lesson, Professor Vindictus. I hope the rest of the day is lovely." Taylor smiled and left.

Zhenya went to get one of the red rags, and pulled out her polish from the kit and opened the lid. She dipped the rag into the polish and pulled out a blob of it, which looked the right size. She rubbed it into the cloth to get it warmed up.

Now, repeat. Again. Okay, the first time had been fun but doing the whole polishing thing again was starting to get a bit tiring. So a little halfheartedly, Lewis rubbed the rag over the handle again like before - okay maybe not exactly as accurately as before. He was not going to do this to his broom so soon after all. But it still looked shiny anyway. After the match. Oh Merlin, the match! He really didn't want to think about that.

So back to the handle which was starting to look REALLY REALLY clean. Yes. Placing the rag onto the closed polish-jar, Lewis waited for another five minutes - which he mostly spent by using a drying spell on his pants. Why hadn't he thought of that earlier?! Then he reached for the previously used towel and started buffing the dried polish again until most of it was gone.

He REALLY didn't want to do that whole step again, so when he leaned forward a little to look at the handle Lewis just pretended he could see his reflection. It was a little blurry but it was close enough. Or something. And after that...they were done?!

Carefully placing every item back into the broom care kit, Lewis took it, the towel and the rag he had used and walked back to the front. The kit went onto the stack to the professor's left, the towel into the towel bin - there really were A LOT of used towels now - and the rag into the rag bin. Now only the broom was left and then he was free to go.

After having packed up all his remaining things, Lewis grabbed the broom off the table and hurried to back to the front. Once the broom was safely back on its rack, Lewis turned into the professor's general direction again and said, "Goodbye, professor." And with that he left the broomshed only to hurry back up to the castle to get out of the cold.

Red rag already in hand, Sierra unscrewed the lid and dipped the rag into the jar of polish. She scooped out what she thought was a knut's size glob of the polish then screwed the lid back on the jar. She then spent the next two minutes working the polish into the rag. When she thought it was worked in good enough, Sierra positioned the rag toward the broom.

She rubbed the polish onto the broom handle in the same small, circular patterns Vindictus had instructed them to do. She slowly continued until the polish had been rubbed all over the handle. When the polish was dry, Sierra reached for a clean towel then gently buffed the dried polish in more small, circular patterns. Now, all she needed to do was repeat this step a second time, and she'd be all done.

Ella packed up her area, whistling while she worked. She made sure to repack the broom care kit with everything that was supposed to be there and return it to the stack. Then she returned the rags into the rag bin on the Professor's left. She replaced her now shiny broom on the rack with a smile, feeling pride in her own handy work. Then she headed for the door. "Bye Professor! Thanks for the lesson."

Fumes....fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuumes...

Kurumi's head was starting to hurt and spin from the intense smell of polish. Professor Vindictus should have provided them with nose plugs, or perhaps some masks to wear. SOMETHING to cut down on the smell? That...or perhaps open a window?

Seeing as Kurumi had already done most of the clean up previously, she didn't have very much left to do besides putting her rags in the proper pile. Picking them up, Kurumi walked them over, picking up twigs that had fallen onto the floor as she went, and tossed them into the rag bin while she threw the stray twigs into the fireplace. Done with this step, Kurumi grabbed her now very shiny broom and placed it gently in the rack next to the door before returning to her station and grabbing her own bag.

Lesson? Kurumi wasn't sure if she should really be thanking him for the lesson, but she went up to him and offer a small polite bow. "Have a good day, Professor," she said, rubbing her arms a bit to try and relax their tense muscles as she made her way out of the broomshed and back towards the castle.

Alyssa straightened up when she heard the Professor speak. Class was over but they were to clean up before leaving. She picked up the jar of polish and turned the lid to make sure that it was securely fastened on the jar, before returning it back to its place in the kit. Then she cleaned the twig clippers by tapping it with her wand and using the Scourgify spell. The clippers were then placed back into the kit. Making sure that everything was in place. She closed the lid of the kit, picked up the broom and carried it and together with kit to where the broom rack was next to the door. She slid the broom back into the rack before returning the kit to where she had taken it from, adding it to the stack.

She then returned to where she had worked. She picked up the polishing rags and towel and made sure her work area was clean and dry before picking up her bagpack. She threw the towel into the basket near the fireplace and the polishing rags into the rag bin that was sitting on the ground to the left of the Professor.

Before leaving, Alyssa walked up to him and said, "Thank you for another instructive lesson, Professor. Even though we didn't get to fly today, I still thoroughly enjoyed myself."she told him before leaving the broomshed.

After having prepared her cloth with the cleaning polish, she started to feel a bit light headed. Maybe the smell of the polish was just taking over the oxygen in the area around her. Maybe not...

She put the bit of the cloth with the most polish on it directly on the handle and started rubbing it into the handle. Then she started rubbing it in a circular motion, making sure she worked it into all the grains and surfaces. She went over the entire handle three, four, five times, applying more and more pressure with each motion. She wanted to make sure the polish got right into the little cracks and bumps, when she came across them. No point spending all this time on cleaning the broom if she wasn't going to take her time and do it properly. Absolutely NOT! Besides, this wasn't her broom but she might want to ride it, so if she cleaned it nicely she would be able to test it out. See what it felt like.
