The door to the Potions classroom is wide open, but Professor Newton isn't there.
The class is set out like it usually is, with the wall of pink and white lab coats, although there appears to be less pink ones and more white ones. The room is the perfect temperature, the dungeon chill removed.
Come in, get your stations organised and your lab coats on. Feel free to chat amongst yourselves. Lesson will start in approximately 20-24 hours.
Two Ginkgo Biloba seeds (soaked), ground to a paste
Two Tablespoons of boiling water
1 tea light candle
20 Hyssop leaves
18 Peppermint leaves
16 Basil leaves
14 Rosemary leaves
12 Citrus leaves
10 Lavender leaves
8 Lavender buds
Two squares of cheesecloth
Method:
Add water to cauldron, bring to a boil
Add two Ginkgo Biloba seeds to a small bowl, add two tablespoons of boiling water from the cauldron and leave for ten minutes to soften.
Slice the GB leaves into thin strips (approximately 2mm wide) with your knife and sprinkle into cauldron.
Grind in mortar and pestle until you create a paste, and add this to the cauldron.
Prepare the leaves/flowers
Add in the leaves and flowers one by one. Some might sink, others will remain floating. Leave for fifteen minutes.
In the meantime, light a tealight candle and put to eye height (to avoid straining neck and back), an arms width from the body (prop on books if needed)
Gaze at the candle flame until your eyes feel like they need to blink, then close your eyes. Concentrate on the image of the candle in your mind (the after image). Repeat for fifteen minutes.
Pour the wax from the candle into the cauldron.
Cast the incantation Mentis Apertus (men-tees ah-peh-rr-tus), whilst circling the want over the cauldron, perform three times.
Remove all leaves and flowers from the cauldron, adding them to the mortar and pestle. Grind them until they form a herby paste, and add it back to the cauldron.
Stir the potion 20 times, slowly, clockwise, with a wooden stirrer.
Remove it from the heat.
Layer two pieces of cheesecloth material over your strainer, to catch more of the solid ingredients. Strain the potion into your vials.
By the end, your potion should yield 500 milliliters. Divide this into 50-milliliter vials. Hand one up for marking and you may take the others.
Use: Increase the drinkers concentration, up to optimal. Best for times of exams. Characteristics: Clear, some green sediment may remain Level: Beginner - Intermediate Information: Dose is 50ml, less than would have limited effect, overdose may cause the opposite effect.
The effect is mostly dependent on the concentration during the candle gazing.
This concoction will last one year.

Still a bit weak due to his injuries, Jace slowly but surely made his way all the way down to the dungeons to attend his Potions class. Hopefully the class won't have any disruptions like last time? Almost dragging himself inside the room, Jace stopped by the door to see that he was the very first to arrive. Did...he get the time wrong?
Jace heaved a sigh, and went on to collect his things as he claimed a workstation at the very front. Slowly, he donned on his lab coat and just...enjoyed the silence while it lasted.

If anything, Potions was one class that Brooklyn had confidence about. Even given that incident with the poisoning, she doubted they’d be pelted by golem parts or otherwise have to deal with injury. Not to mention, the poltergeists had been awfully quiet as of late. She doubted they’d have another incident this lesson like had happened during previous ones. In any case, she had walked from her common room to the classroom with her head held high, expecting everything to be like usual.
Except instead, she was met by an empty classroom, aside from the lone figure of Jace. The younger Ravenclaw who she’d encountered during lessons a few times now. Professor Newton was nowhere to be seen, and she doubted he was lurking under a Disillusionment charm. Therefore, she merely nodded in the boy’s direction as she’d passed, claiming a white lab coat and settling in at her normal work station.

Genny stumbled into the classroom wrapped in a thick shawl. She wasn't feeling so good lately, probably because of that visit to Hogsmeade where she stayed out in the cold for too long after she forgot to wear some socks with her shoes (what, She was too excited to remember!!!!). The next morning her body ached but she didn't want to miss out the chance on playing with the others outside, so she ignored it up until this morning when she could not ignore it any longer. She took a potion and made her way down to the dungeons, she could not afford not attending, what with her losing a hundred points for her house.
"Hey," she greeted the professor and sniffed. Then found herself a close table and plopped on it with her big shawl knocking over a few items of the table behind her. Too tired to care.

He was bracing for the fact that it being the middle of winter, the dungeons would be specially bitey with the chill, plus the fact that they just got back from Santorini means his body was still acclimatizing back to these lovely not Scottish winters. So in walks the Gryffindor Ace, bundled up once again but ready and eager for a new Potions lesson....
... oh Head Honcho Newton aint here? Neither was ickle Madame Currie....
... also it seems like the Potions classroom was actually not chilly at all. Awesome! He grabbed a white lab coat and proceeded to his workstation....

Genny just got ahead of him a few seconds and heard her greet.... the air? "Ey Genny!" he waved to her, off to the side. Was that greeting meant for him? Because he's gonna take it.

Hopping with Vlam on her shoulder into the room she took a relieved breath, the room was nicely warm and that was good! Hmm, but... Looking around her she frowned, where was the professor? Vlam wanted to play with Madame Curie but she and the professor weren't there... Well, then Vlam needed to wait she decided. Shrugging she walked further into the room and picked a white lab coat and walked toward her usual seat. "You need to said in my pocket now" she told her rat while putting the small animal in the pocket of her lap coat.
Smiling because she was in a good mood she started to prepare everything she thought she needed during this lesson and sat down, waiting for the professor to enter the room now too, with Madam Curie of course...

Despite all the weird incidents of some prankster poltergeists over the past few months Hady was ready for Potions. With her hair tied back tightly into a high ponytail she entered the room grabbing one of the white lab coats off a hook along the wall. Slipping it on and fasting the clips on it she made her way over to the nearest empty table sending out a small smile or a nod of her head to those around her.
It wasn't until she set her bag down that the brunette become fully aware of the fact that someone was missing. He was always here when she arrived so she had expected him to be. Hady wrinkled her brow a little bit glancing around the room again and at the desk for Madame Curie at least. Not seeing Art or his rat she frowned a little more. Possibly he was still having problems with his knees due to the extra cold winter weather?
Since there wasn't anything else left to do Hady began taking out all her things and laying them across her work space. Each item being cleaned as she went along.

Today would be her first chance to check out the new Quick Quotes Quill that she had bought from Hogsmeade. Kitty walked into the potions classroom and approached the coats. Much to her relief there were now plenty of white ones to pick from along with the pink ones. She selected one of the white coats and put it on. Then she moved to sit in the front row, nearby Jace. "Hey Jace. Are you well?" She knew all about his injury and was hoping he would be better today.

Azura moved quickly into the dungeons, she was super excited about potions but she also wanted to see..
Jace! Azura had been beside herself when she had heard her best friend had been in the Hospital Wing! Was this how he felt when she had ended up there so many times?
She was about to wave to the Professor but she noticed he wasn't there so she made a bee line towards her best friend and settled down into the chair next to him.
She tugged on her pink lab coat as she looked at him. "Hey, are you okay?"" She asked him concern etched all over her face.
She smiled as she looked up at Kitty, "Hey, how's it going? " She asked with a warm smile.
Jonas walked in from the freezing cold. Jeez, when is it going to be summer already? He'll never know. Anyways, Jonas walked in and everyone seemed to be minding their own as they talked quietly with their selves. Jonas shrugged and put on his lab coat before going to a table.

It was always interesting to walk into a classroom and find it absent a Professor. Had to admire there level of trust that the students wouldn't do something simply for the fact that a Professor wasn't there and they were very likely to get away with it. Even his quill found it noteworthy. He figured some of the times, it was because they were still trying to get things set up for the lesson. In those cases it spoke to the likelihood of it being something big. Sometimes it was simply them running late to their own class..as you can imagine, it was hardly fair to dock points from others in this situation.
In rare cases--that he had yet to see--something could have gone horribly wrong that needed sorting. Given the man's shoddy knee, the Gryffindor had an idea of what he was more leaning toward.
Blaise wasn't bothered, regardless of the reason. The boy simply went to take a white lab coat then took his seat in the middle of the room as he'd always done.
The Professor would get where whenever he did. It was that simple.

The slytherin thought he might as well give it a stab at potions again. As he made his way to the potions room which was conveniently next to the slytherin common room, he didn't have that much of a walk. As he opened the large door, he noticed the classroom wasn't totally full. He checked his watch and noticed he was early. Ah well that was fine. He shrugged and looked around and noticed the professor wasn't there. Good. He didn't want to talk to anyone anyways. It was just one of those days.
He made his way to his desk which was in the back of the room and he got out his notebook and began to scribble some ideas and doodles. He was surprised his notebook wasn't falling apart yet of how many pages he had stored. He even got out his potion supplies too. He wondered what potion they will make today.

POTIONS! Katy was super excited for this class, since it was one of her favorite subjects and since there was always the potential for excitement, adventure, and explosions. Every single class, there they were lighting stuff back up and potentially burning the place down again. It was awesome.
So she was glad to grab a seat up front and set up her work station, including taking out her cauldron and giving it a vigorous scrubbing. "Good day, Sir. Nice day for an explosion, you think?" She needed her lab coat!

Available white lab coats since the pink was starting to bum her out…check.
So far so good in the positivity of the latest potions lesson. Cassie looked around to take further notice of the classroom, only to find one potions master missing. No real bother there she supposed, grabbing one of the white coats to slip on over her uniform before finding a free workstation. Once that was done, the third year set about getting her supplies out. Best to be ready now then rush and make a mistake, her father would say. No need for potions mishaps for sure.

Determined not to have a repeat of previous lessons, particularly the one in which she had had the unfortunate pleasure of having Maggie for a table partner, Paige slipped into the classroom and grabbed her white coat with the full intention of greeting Professor Newton with a wide smile....only the man was not present. Oh...okay...hmmm...
Glancing around the room a bit apprehensively - they DID have Potions now, right? - Paige scanned the area for a seat. And not just any seat...a safe seat. Which brought her beside Blaise. "Hey," she whispered for no real reason as she slid into the vacant seat beside him. "Hope you don't mind." She gave a quick glance over her shoulder at the door...for reasons. "How's the quill?" she asked while reaching into her bag and pulling out her potions textbook and a few supplies from her potions kit she had taken to sterilize further on her own time after doing a bit of practice brewing for the sake of NEWT studies.

To while away his time, Jace went on to clean his cauldron and other utensils, checking and re-checking his every stock of standard ingredients from his kit. He was too focused on his task, and almost missed the sight of Brooklyn. It was a good thing that he caught movement from his peripheral and realized that he was no longer alone. The senior student’s nod was returned with a bow and a grin. Jace figured that Brooklyn wasn’t the friendly type, however, the Ravenclaw still found her pleasant.

Jace once again faced the front as more students arrived in the classroom. Quietly, he procured his book from his bag, and prepared a fresh sheet of parchment for note taking. As he did so, he caught sight of Kitty and gave their prefect a nod. “Better than a few weeks ago, yes.” He said grinning at the older Ravenclaw. “How were your holidays?” Hopefully, it was way better than his?
Hearing a very familiar voice, Jace turned to his side to see a worried best friend. “I am now.” He said giving her a nudge and a grin. “It was a very bad fall, but everything was fixed.” He said showing her his forehead and left arm. “The muscles around it are still sore...but, it’ll be gone soon.” So really, there was nothing to worry about.
The professor’s absence was a bit odd though. “I don’t remember Professor Newton being late to his own class.” Jace said to both Azura and Kitty. The Ravenclaw remembered the old man bumping into him and Matt earlier in the term, and didn’t look well at all given that his joints were giving him a hard time from walking up and down the stairs.
Hmm.

Olivia had been doing much better in Potions so far this term, and because of this wonderful phenomenon, the Gryffindor blonde was actually eager to show up for class.
... But as she'd learned last time, sitting with her friends wasn't the least be helpful. So, today, she was opting to sit at a workstation all her own; something she hoped to communicate by placing her bag on the vacant side.
.... And Professor Newton was nowhere to be found. While she waited she grabbed one of the pinker lab coats and slipped it on. What? She enjoyed the pinkness.

PINK COAT HERE. Yes. Charlotte put it on, wishing it was more purple-tinged, and then sat next to her cousin. Who she nudged. Who was she talking to, the professor wasn't here!
But also why were they sitting at the front, what was THAT all about?
"Katy! Pssst! Can you do my cauldron too? I have to put my hair in a braid!" For SAFETY reasons. Help a cousin out!

Art was trying not to rush through things, or he was likely to mess it up. As it was, he was already late. To his own lesson. Madame Curie was sleeping in the pocket of his cardigan, so she wasn't aware of their tardiness.
He came through the door and looked around to see all the faces. "H-hello everyone, sorry about the delay." He set the containers he was holding onto the bench, and lined them all up. "Today I thought we'd brew something to help with exams and your studies. It's my own little creation, and it's called the Concentration Concoction. There's lots of leaves and things in here, and whilst it's not a particularly difficult one to brew, the results are varied with the concentration of each brewer at the time of brewing it." This probably didn't make much sense at the moment. He took the lids off all the containers; Ginkgo Biloba leaves, Ginkgo Biloba seeds, tea light candles, Hyssop, Peppermint, Basil, Rosemary, Citrus and Lavender leaves, the lavender buds and squares of cheesecloth.
"Part of this potion requires some.. some uhh Trataka. Does anyone know what that is? Has anyone done it before?" It was a bit more of a divination practice than a potion practice, but it was a tried and true practice for the older man. PLUS, it made a very big difference to this potion of his.
Art set up by putting a stack of books on his desk, and placed a tea light candle on the top. "The candle is height with my eyes, and it's at about an arms distance," he said whilst holding an arm out in front of him. "It's very easy, and-and you just gaze into the candle until your eyes need to blink, then you hold your eyes closed and focus on the imprint of the light in your eye. Then when that starts to fade, you open your eyes and do it again." He gave a brief demonstration. "The point is to concentrate on the candle. That's what will help. Does anyone know why this practice, which really," he chuckled, "has nothing to do with potion making, would be part of this potion?"
OOC: There's three questions asked here. You can attempt an answer at any number, or even none if you don't want to. I'll post again in 12ish hours.

OH! There was her Head of House. Hello, Professor Newton! How are YOU doing today?
... And they were jumping right into things, weren't they? Which was no problem, as Olivia had already gotten out her journal and the customary golden glitter pen. For notes, because she was learning that taking them actually helped her to understand the subject matter better. Who'd have guessed that?
....scribble, scribble....
Also, the candle trick was kinda weird, but he'd mentioned that this potion would aid in their concentration.... Whiiiich led her to believe that all this with the candle was... "Is it supposed to test the length of time we can actually concentrate beforehand. Like, without the help of the potion? It's kinda like when you perform an experiment and you have to know base? stats before you can add a variable that will change it..."
Maybe?

Jace sat straighter in his chair as soon as Professor Newton entered the room. The Ravenclaw followed the man with his eyes, making sure that he’s okay. No achy joints then? Good. His attention then shifted from the man to the jars in front of them. Did he say gingko? They have those in Japan, especially in sacred grounds. As the potion master continued to talk, Jace picked up his quill and started to take down notes.
Concentration Concoction though? Jace doubted he’d use it, given that he’s super focused most of the time, however, the brew could definitely help Matt in his studies. The thing is...based on how Professor Newton described it, the brew would need lots of concentration of which, Matt lacks. Moving on, the Ravenclaw kept his head down as he wrote down more notes, adding in some of his own annotations. Trataka? Never heard of it.
Jace paused to look up and watch the demonstration, and wrote down more notes on his parchment. Trataka must be a form of meditation, based on what he saw just now. And...wait what? It has nothing to do with the potion? Well, that’s a bit impossible now isn’t it? Somehow the Trataka thing should aide in the preparation of the potion at the very least. “Erm, is it to help us focus before brewing the potion? And at the same time gauge the strength of the potion based on how long we do the Trataka?” Because yeah, it would be a bit pointless if they didn’t have their focus while brewing a Concentration Concoction.

Hadleigh was just finishing cleaning the last of her supplies and setting it where it needed to be as Professor Newton entered the room. Lifting her hazel eyes onto the much older man she sent him a warm smile, eyes narrowing curiously when she didn't see Madam Curie. Where was her newest little animal friend? Surely she wasn't to far away since Art never was seen without her, just as Airey had never been seen without Pebbles.
Taking up her newest feathered quill and a nice fresh sheet of parchment which was labeled and dated at the top Hady got started on taking down notes. They would be brewing a Concentration Concoction. Now this was good news to her. Very good news indeed as she was sure to be needing it in the upcoming months with NEWTs steadily approaching. These were some of the most important tests of her life. Anything that would help her concentrate and focus on studying would be nice.
Setting down her quill a moment the seventh year watched the demonstration Art gave them with the candle. How this worked itself into a potion she wasn't exactly sure but a guess or two couldn't really hurt anything at all. "Does it help to clear our mind and get us to focus on just one thing?" That's what concentration was all about really, wasn't it. Allowing ones self to be able to focus on the main task at hand and nothing else for the time being.

Ohhhhhh no.
Oh no.
Char put her hand up, not to ANSWER a question after absorbing all (ok, most) of that, but to ask one.
"Professor, I'm not really good at concentrating on this stuff.... will that mean my potion will suck?" HALP. Could she get someone who was GOOD at concentrating to do the concentrating part? She was sooo easily distra--oh look there was Liv! Char waved at her friend.

Oliver said the word over and over in his head, trying to figure out if he'd ever heard it before. Trataka, trataka, trataka. Nope, nothing was coming to him. But then he listened and took notes of everything Professor Newton was saying in regards of how to do the trataka thing, and decided it sounded weird but really cool. He wondered where this trataka thing even came about.
Raising his hand to give his opinion, he said, "I don't know anything about trataka or where it's from, but it sounds really cool. Um...and I guess we should do it for this to test our concentration. If we can't concentrate on the candle very long, then our potion for concentration won't be very strong, and vice versa." That made sense, didn't it? He did have one comment about that though. "Buuut...I'm pretty sure I can concentrate on a candle more than I can stay concentrated on making a potion." It wasn't his fault, obviously. There were just so many steps, and it could get hard to keep track of. Potions just weren't his forte.
A concentration potion? That was exactly what Bonnie needed right now. The last few days hadn't been easy and she found herself drifting away elsewhere in class. She had no idea what she was doing and that did not sit well with her. Back home she was top at everything: classes, popularity, style. Here? Her old friends wouldn't recognise her in a dowdy pink lab coat.
Catching herself slipping off, she reiterated the Professor's question to herself. The practice with the candle had nothing to do with potion making? Bonnie questioned whether it even had anything to do with magic at all.
Raising a perfectly manicured hand, Bonnie added: "Professor, is the point of the candle to make you concentrate on something singular, rather than your surroundings. Like in yoga where you're supposed to clear your mind?"
