Art was standing behind his desk with Madame Curie perched on his left shoulder. He was organising all of the ingredients into an order which would allow his students to easily come to the desk when it was time and collect them. His white lab coat was on, and all of his personal equipment was set up ready to be used, to brew the potion today.
As it was nearing 10:30, he opened the door to allow the students to come in and get ready for class.
Ingredients
• 6 cups water
• 15 fresh Belladonna leaves
• 3 dried Fluxweed sprigs, roughly crushed in mortar and pestle (picked during a full moon, and dried over one week)
• 0.5mL Wormwood essence
• 2Tbsp Lacewing flies
• 1tsp honey
• 1tsp water
• 0.1mL Boomslang venom
• 1 crushed Unicorn Horn
• 1 measure of your animal
Method
1. Add 6 cups of water to you cauldron, and light a small flame. Simmer the water for 5 minutes to slowly heat to an appropriate temperature
2. Pluck the 15 leaves of Belladonna from the sprigs, will need approximately 2 sprigs, and add them to the cauldron once five minutes is up
3. Gather the 3 sprigs of dried Fluxweed, and roughly crush in mortar and pestle. Only enough to increase the surface area, then add to the cauldron
4. Simmer for a further 3 minutes
5. Stir with a wooden stirrer, three times, clockwise
6. Measure, with a 1ml syringe, your Wormwood essence, and add to the cauldron.
7. Measure 0.1mL Boomslang venom in a different syringe and place to the side for a moment
8. Clean the mortar and pestle, add one unicorn horn, and crush it to a fine powder, then add the Boomslang venom. Mix together (it will not make a paste) and set aside for three minutes, then add to the cauldron.
9. Simmer the cauldron for three minutes, then stir three times, clockwise
10. Clean the mortar and pestle, and add two tablespoons of Lacewing flies, one teaspoon of honey, and one teaspoon of water, and crush until it makes a smooth paste. Carefully add the paste to the cauldron
OOC: Hi everyone, welcome to lesson two! I hope you remembered to bring your characters pets in their cages, and put on their lab coats, which are lining the wall, ready for class.
OOC: Class has officially began! Just pretend you've been here all along.
Next Kitty gathered the remaining three sprigs of dried Fluxweed and began crushing them in the mortar and pestle. For a few moments it brought back bad memories of when she had been trying to brew an antidote for Tia while under the effects of poison herself. She had felt like she was floating throughout the worm and that her arms were growing longer in order to reach the ingredients on the table. UGH!
Hopefully, probably nothing like that would happen this time. Kitty turned and saw Esme in distress and wondered what had gone wrong.

Ariadne picked up her wooden stirrer, ready to get started on the fifth and final (for now) step. She paused just before inserting it into her cauldron and second guessed whether she'd cleaned it or not.
Hmm...oh, yeah--she did! ...
Wait. No, she didn't! ... SHE DID! Or...was that her cauldron?
-.-
Ariadne had second guessed herself so much that she finally decided to just clean it again whether she had or not. A second cleaning wouldn't hurt, and she'd rather be safe than sorry. So she cleaned it.
Now, with a SUPER clean stirrer, she stirred her potion three times in a clockwise direction. Wait that...SHE WAS DONE. For now.

Checking her notes, Janelle began the first step. She retrieved her measuring cup and set it down on the counter. Taking out her wand, she said, "Aguamenti". Janelle watched as the water flowed from her wand into the measuring cup. When she had one cup, she said, "Finite", ending the spell. Then she poured the water into her cauldron and repeated the steps five more times.
Once her cauldron contained the required six cups of water, Janelle pointed her wand beneath it. "Incendio", she said, as the flame lit. She adjusted the flame so it would be just right. Checking her watch, she set it to alarm when five minutes time was up. Janelle thought it best not to waste time, so she washed her measuring cup. Then she thought she would begin to pluck her Belladonna leaves, while waiting for the water to heat.

The suggestions already being given by her classmates seemed like pretty good guesses. Olivia sure couldn’t think of anything new or better to supply as her own guess, the first year remaining quiet and listening instead. Thankfully the lesson began in earnest soon enough and Professor Newton solved the curiosity issue by supplying the potion for them. A potion to help them understand their pets. How cool!! Her expression was amused as she exchanged glances with her feline companion. This class could result in awesome possibilities.
Certainly better than them poisoning themselves.
She copied down the list of ingredients into her notes to begin before getting up from her workstation with the list. Definitely going to need to make a few trips to gather all the ingredients in the separate containers the professor had offered to help them as well as the added tools. Three of them to be exact. But eventually Olivia had everything from the Belladonna leaves to the scooped out seeds of a shrivelfig gathered around her cauldron that she had scourgified with everything else while she had settled in earlier.
With all that done, she was ready to brew and Professor Newton had given them the go ahead to begin. With her wand and a measuring up, she collected 6 cups of water that she added to the clean cauldron. The Ravenclaw then lit the flame as the instructions said, preparing for the simmer she needed to move on.
All she had to do now was wait an additional three minutes and then begin stirring. Now the nervousness began to creep in, ever so slowly. It was't strong and wouldn't have been there at all if not for that one disastrous Potions lesson. But Kitty knew it was unlikely that ANOTHET accident would happen and she told herself that in order to beat back the nervousness.

Once the simmer had happened in her cauldron, Olivia glanced at her watch to note the time. Five minutes was needed and the first year took the time to double check everything, especially what she needed for the next step so she was all ready. Which meant dealing with the Belladonna swigs and taking off enough leaves from what she had needed. One…two…three…four…five…six…seven…eight…nine…ten…e leven…twelve…thirteen…fourteen…fifteen. That was enough leaves and it had taken just two and a half sprigs to work with.
With her simmering having started after the professor’s, she waited until after the timer had gone off for several seconds to check her watch. Cool…she was ready to move on then. So all fifteen hand-picked Belladonna leaves now went into the cauldron so the second step was completed on the list of things to do. Two down out if the original five and all was well.
When three minutes had passed (Kitty literally counted the seconds), Kitty took the stirrer and stirred the cauldron vigorously three times going clockwise.
And she was done! Kitty sat up in her chair and watched the others finish.

Janelle grabbed her Belladonna sprigs and began to quickly pluck the leaves from them. Placing them in one of the dishes one by one, she counted out fifteen leaves. Putting them aside, Janelle checked her watch. Only a few more seconds to go. Before she knew it, her watch began to buzz softly. Her five minutes were up.
Picking up the dish, Janelle poured her leaves into the cauldron. She watched them swirl around in the water for a few seconds, then realized that she had more work to do. Checking her notes once more, Janelle grabbed her already cleaned mortar and pestle. Crushing was always her favorite part of potion brewing. It allowed one's stress to be relieved in a productive way. Janelle turned and got her sprigs of Flaxweed. Now it was fun time.

It was certainly a good thing that Rachel decided to keep an eye on Esme. Her friend had fared properly thus far threw the steps given but when Rachel set down her wooden stirrer, she looked over to see Esme's head on the desk.
Concerned, the Eagle hurried over to the Badger and took the stirrer from her while putting an arm around her shoulders. "Esme? What's wrong? Is it the owls?'' Now that she was close enough, she could hear the muffled sounds of crying.
Why was one of the persons she admired crying? Rachel did not like this one bit.

Next up was the fluxweed, three sprigs of it, which Olivia took from its container and placed it within her cleaned mortar. Then picking up the pestle, she began grinding it up as instructed, briefly glancing up at the professor once or twice to follow his demonstration. It didn’t hurt to try and copy how the expert was doing things. As such she just mashed them around a little, nothing broken up too small so it was within what Newton had been explaining to them. Whatever increasing their surface area had to do with mashing them up.
Finally those too were added to her cauldron like the rest of what she had added, the Ravenclaw giving a cursory look to make sure everything seemed to be doing okay. Nothing was bubbling over or changing colors or catching fire so she supposed that meant it was all good. No mistakes needed to happen to make things bad.
Five and six! The last cup of water was added to the cauldron, without her getting drenched again thank you very much. It helped to whisper the incantation to get it more controlled. That still didn't change the fact that Haddie was sopping wet in the dank and drafty potions classroom. She wasn't in the best of moods, honestly. But having Asher here with her meant it wasn't nearly as bad a mood as it should have been. How could you stay grumpy with that little ferret face watching as you worked on the potion. So Cute!
Alright, now to simmer. Haddie took out an hour glass that was exactly one minute. She was a horrible judge of time without something to reference. The Californian Eagle aimed her wand at the burner under her cauldron. "Incendi..." She tensed, realizing how bad that could be if her magic was wonky with that spell. Sheepishly Haddie aimed her wand again, and this time in a soft whisper, said, "Incendio." A very small, minuscule flame shot lazily out of her wand. But it was enough. Her burner was lit and her water was simmering.
Haddie turned the minute long hour glass over once, letting the sand count down to when she'd need to flip it again.

Janelle placed her 3 sprigs of Fluxweed in her mortar and picked up her pestle. She began to crush the sprigs, mashing to her hearts content. She didn't want to get too carried away and kept her eye on things so as not to overcrush. When it looked right to her, Janelle reluctantly stopped. Maybe next time she would have something that required crushing to a fine powder. That way she could release her stress sufficiently.
Putting down her pestle, Janelle picked up the mortar and poured her Fluxweed into the cauldron mixture. Three minutes wasn't so long to wait, but she set her watch anyway. That would give her just enough time to clean her mortar and pestle. Taking her wand, she directed it toward the items and said, "Scourgify". She had just finished her cleaning when her three minutes was up. She was almost finished with her first set of steps and anxious to move on to the next set.

Hadley flipped the minute glass. 1 minute down. She went back to scratching Asher's head through the bars of his cage. Flip. 2 minutes down. Asher was getting restless in the cage and Haddie wished she could take him out and play with him, because frankly, she was getting restless waiting for the water to simmer. Flip. 3 minutes down. Asher chirped at Haddie, which she figured meant he wanted more pets. She'd know soon enough though if she got this potion brewed right. Flip. 4 minutes.
Sorry, Asher. Momma has to get back to the potion. While she waited for the last minute to drain away, Haddie began to pluck the belladonna leaves off their sprigs. She stopped twice to count and recount her leaves until she was sure she had exactly 15. The last of the sand drained from the minute glass. In went the 15 belladonna leaves. Hadley read the next step 3 times, but she still wasn't any closer to actually knowing what it wanted. Just that she had to crush fluxweed sprigs to some unknowable consistency and then add them to the potion. She sighed. That sinking feeling in her gut that she was gonna completely ruin this potion was back.
Okay so... the revelation that they weren't going to be feeding the potion to their pets put Jaemin a lot more at ease. The small boy let out a relieved sigh and patted the top of the cage quietly, looking up at the professor curiously. They were making a potion to understand their pets? So they could read their pets thoughts, or... would it be like, understanding the squeaks and noises and body language and stuff?
The small boy dutifully jumped off his seat and headed up to get the ingredients, eyes never leaving Art as he collected each thing. He needed to ask... but he had to get his potion started first. He very carefully carried his things back to his workstation and set them down, making sure to keep them far enough from Sniffler that he wouldn't be able to reach them. He didn't have long limbs, but he was a sneaky little guy...
First thing was six cups of water. Jaemin felt around for his wand and held it up, dutifully casting 'aguamenti' to start filling the cauldron up. He hummed happily to himself as he did so, much more content to be here now that he knew Sniffler's life wasn't going to be in danger.

Once the six cups of water were measured out and put into her cauldron, Brooklyn glanced over at her cat for a second. The next step was fire, and she wasn’t sure how he’d take that. Yet she also couldn’t do too much about it, so trusting that Tywin was still planning on practically ignoring her, she took her wand out and pointed it underneath her cauldron. A quick Incendio later, and she adjusted the flame to low. Now she just had to wait, and she was happy that there was at least something for her to do while she did. Five minutes would have been long if all she’d had to do was sit there.
Gathering up the belladonna, she started harvesting the leaves, silently counting each leaf until she reached fifteen of them. The remaining leaves on the sprig she’d been working on got placed back into the little dish, and she gathered the ones she’d liberated. There was still a minute or so left, so she just shifted the pile around until the five minutes were up. Once that was dealt with, she added the leaves to the simmering water in her cauldron. Now it was time for the fluxweed, upon a look at her notes.

Janelle found her clean wooden stirrer and dipped it into her cauldron. She began to stir her potion in a clockwise direction, counting as she went along. "One, two, three, done.". Janelle removed the stirrer from the cauldron and stood back. Hopefully her potion was good so far. She thought that she had done everything correctly, but she had been known to make mistakes on occasion. But that was thinking negatively and Janelle was not going to do that today.
Janelle took a moment to clean her stirrer. Then she checked to make sure that all of her equipment was clean. Now all she had to do was wait for the professor to tell them what to do next. In the meantime, Janelle looked over her notes and checked the list of ingredients. She tried to guess what they would be doing.

Crunch. Crunch. Crunch. Crunch. Was... that a... enough to increase surface area? What did that even mean. Completely lost and confused as to what her crushed fluxweed sprigs should look like, Haddie glanced around, surveying what everyone else's looked like. Well, the few that were on that step at least. It wasn't very helpful to be honest, but hers fell in the range of whatever everyone else seemingly had. So in they went.
Now for more simmering. Awesome. Hads never actually extinguished the burner so it was still simmering from before... that wasn't going to ruin it was it? She had no idea, but it was too late now. She flipped the minute glass over and went back to petting Asher while she waited. One minute. Flip. Two minutes. Flip. Three minutes. This time, Haddie extinguished the burner, just to be safe and spent a minute hunting for her wooden stirring spoon. Clockwise... she had to take a moment to imagine a clock resting on top of the cauldron, but naturally, the clock she imagined was digital so it didn't help. Clockwise. Got it. Hadley stirred the potion. Once clockwise. Twice clockwise. Thrice clockwise.
She had done it. She'd followed the instructions and her potions was actually looking like it was... wait, there was a bunch more ingredients... Ah carp.

Reading the instructions, Brooklyn narrowed her eyes a little. It really didn’t seem much like they were crushing anything, when the step said they were just supposed to crush the sprigs enough to increase the surface area. In fact, it seemed more like they were supposed to be flattening the sprigs. Not crushing them. However, she still got her cleaned mortar and pestle out and set the sprigs inside the former. She’d just have to be careful. Even if for the most part, aside from the occasional glance toward him, she was generally not paying attention to the demonstration. She figured she could manage to accomplish the goal without worrying about nervous professors. Her cat was enough to concern herself with.

SPOILER!!: Before class started
After being poisoned, the class was required to bring their pets next. Okay. Ichiro will not like this class one bit, Jace could tell. The British Short Hair cat moved around its cage like an impatient troll, as the 12 year old boy made his way inside the Potions classroom. "Good day, Professor." Nope. Not greeting the rat today. Not when Ichiro was with him. Taking his usual seat at the front, Jace's pet made a sound as it eyed Madame Curie. "Shh." Jace poked his cat on its side, making it curl up obediently. In an instant, Ichiro was fast asleep.
Jace's head snapped back at the Professor as he asked them all a question. He decided to stay quiet this time, and guessed the most ridiculous answer he could think of: The pets were there for it to try their poison.
Well, he'd love to see Madame Curie go bonkers.
On second thought, maybe not. Rats are scary.
--
As the professor revealed the Potion they are going to brew for the day, Jace donned his lab coat, took quick notes and gathered his ingredients. He was glad that they don't need to partner up this time, because he can tell that he'd be able to work the potions out more easily. No distraction whatsoever. Just him, and his workstation.
After cleaning his tools, Jace consulted his notes again, and proceeded with the first step. The Ravenclaw got his beaker, filled it with water and added 6 cups into his cauldron. Once he was done, he lit his bunsen burner with his wand once more, placed it under his cauldron, and adjusted its intensity.
While waiting for his five minutes to be up, the Ravenclaw busied himself by preparing the next ingredient. 15 Belladonna leaves coming right up!

As her water heated, Dot plucked each leaf from her sprigs of belladonna. The first tore in half as she tried to remove it from the stem, which led her to plant a finger at the join and carefully tug the next few leaves from their homes.
Thirteen, fourteen, aaaaaaand fifteen. The last of her leaves was pulled free just as her cauldron hit the five minute mark, and she waffled briefly on whether that meant she was supposed to remove it from the heat. It didn't say to, though, so Dot added the belladonna leaves to the cauldron and left the flame in place.
Once the cauldron was full of water, Jaemin stopped the water spell and set his wand aside. Water he was good with, but... he wouldn't be lighting the burner with magic. Not today. He was not yet secure enough in his own magic to be casting fire for such a precise thing, and it was better to light it the way he knew how rather than burning down the lab accidentally. So he lit it the old fashioned way, and watched as the flame licked against the cauldron. It was interesting to watch, but... he had other stuff to do!
While that was working on its five minutes of simmering, the small Slytherin moved on to the next step. Plucking leaves didn't seem like any type of hard work at all, but he did know what this plant was, which... made him a bit wary.
"Professor... belladonna is poisonous, right?" His dad had made sure Jaemin was aware of that, because the berries on it looked so yummy. He had always felt the urge to try them, sure that his little boy invincibility would protect him, but he knew better, and also knew that his dad would ban him from the gardens if he ended up nearly dying from belladonna poisoning. He pressed his fingertips down on the base of each leaf and broke it off as gently as possible, tilting his head to look at the growing pile. "How come it becomes not poisonous in potions?"
He'd never thought to ask this before, but after the class with the 'vague poisoning' elixir... it seemed pertinent to ask.

Carefully placing all 15 Belladonna leaves in a dish, Jace waited for the five minute mark to be up, his eyes darting from the timer to his pet cat. He wondered what his cat thinks of him, as he suddenly realized the amount of time it stared him down while he's in bed reading...or eating...even taking his shower.
Squirming at the idea, Jace gulped at the sound of the timer going off. Without wasting another second, the Ravenclaw added the leaves into his cauldron carefully, and at the same time counting it again just in case he miscalculated.
So very careful, he was.

Next on her tray was the dried fluxweed, which Dot broke up into her mortar. It was like making spaghetti and not wanting the ends to hang out of the pot. She rolled the small end of the pestle against her palm a few times, crushing the fluxweed beneath the blunt head of the tool. Not too fine, though.... even if Dot didn't get the surface tension bit at all, she got the concept of 'roughly crush'.
She'd have to ask about the surface tension thing. Maybe Maddie, after class.
The fluxweed went into the cauldron next, and Dot began to count slowly to herself. Three minutes at this same flame height.

She aimed her wand at the cup's basin.
"Aguamenti!" A strong blast of water erupted from her wand, knocking the cup out of her hand and spraying back into her face. Just like it did during the fishing CoMC lesson... "Finite!" Only five more to go. Great.

Why was one of the persons she admired crying? Rachel did not like this one bit.
It was almost as if he could sense the angsty feelings. He glanced right up at Miss. Darcy. She was crying. He gulped, and saw that Miss. Watson was speaking to her. He would have been happy to leave the two friends alone, but… it was his classroom. He had best see what it was. He put down what he was working on, and placed Madame Curie on the work bench to keep an eye over the class, whilst he walked over to the young ladies. “Is… is uhh… e-everything alright?” he asked with a scratch to his head. He heard Miss. Watson mention owls. “Are… are you worried the owls will be hurt?” he asked.
SPOILER!!: Jaemin

Art had thought he had sensed Mr. Song almost wanting to say something earlier, but he hadn’t. So it came to no surprise when he asked a question. “Yes, one of the most toxic plants,” he said with a little smile. “B-but don’t worry, the amount we are using today is not of harm, and it works with the other ingredients in the potion to… to err… well, to balance out the therapeutic effects of it, rather than a toxic overdose.” He hoped that had reassured the young man.
++++
“Okay, now that we have added the belladonna and fluxweed to the water, we need to continue.”

“With these tiny little syringes here,” they really were quite cute! “We need to add half a millilitre of wormwood essence to the potion.” He scooped up half a millilitre from the small container of wormwood essence, and syringed it into the cauldron. “Now, you can either pass those back at the end of the class, or clean them and keep them for your own potion tool kit. Th-then with another, fresh syringe, we need 0.1 of a millilitre of our Boomslang venom. Tiny amount, but very concentrated. Just measure it and put it to the side for the moment.” He measured the minute dose of the venom, and put it aside. “Now, we need to clean our mortar and pestle,” he said, demonstrating the cleaning of his, “and add one unicorn horn to the mortar and crush it to a fine powder. Once you’ve done that, add the boomslang venom TO the unicorn horn powder and give it a little mix. It’s not enough liquid to create a paste, but we just want to mix it together before we add it to the cauldron,” he explained, crushing his unicorn horn and tilting his mortar to show the class how fine the powder was. Almost like sand. He added the tiny amount of the boomslang venom to the mortar, and mixed it with his wooden stirrer. “Now just tip this onto a clean dish and put to the side for at least three minutes, just to let the ingredients work together. What we want is for the boomslang venom’s SLOW characteristic to give the potion a long lasting duration. But as it is venom, we need to counteract this with the purifying characteristics of the unicorn horn. It takes away the venom but… but for some reason it leaves the slow acting characteristic.” He loved that. Putting it aside, he cleaned his mortar and pestle again.
“Now, with your clean mortar and pestle, add your two tablespoons of lacewing flies, and then one teaspoon each of water and honey.” He measured out his ingredients, and commenced mashing it all together. “We want to mash it to make a nice, smooth paste, and then we just add that to the cauldron.” He carefully added the paste to his cauldron, preventing splashback, and checked the timer. Three minutes had passed, and he added the mixture of boomslang venom and powdered unicorn horn to the cauldron.
