Art was standing behind his desk with Madame Curie perched on his left shoulder. He was organising all of the ingredients into an order which would allow his students to easily come to the desk when it was time and collect them. His white lab coat was on, and all of his personal equipment was set up ready to be used, to brew the potion today.
As it was nearing 10:30, he opened the door to allow the students to come in and get ready for class.
Ingredients
• 6 cups water
• 15 fresh Belladonna leaves
• 3 dried Fluxweed sprigs, roughly crushed in mortar and pestle (picked during a full moon, and dried over one week)
• 0.5mL Wormwood essence
• 2Tbsp Lacewing flies
• 1tsp honey
• 1tsp water
• 0.1mL Boomslang venom
• 1 crushed Unicorn Horn
• 1 measure of your animal
Method
1. Add 6 cups of water to you cauldron, and light a small flame. Simmer the water for 5 minutes to slowly heat to an appropriate temperature
2. Pluck the 15 leaves of Belladonna from the sprigs, will need approximately 2 sprigs, and add them to the cauldron once five minutes is up
3. Gather the 3 sprigs of dried Fluxweed, and roughly crush in mortar and pestle. Only enough to increase the surface area, then add to the cauldron
4. Simmer for a further 3 minutes
5. Stir with a wooden stirrer, three times, clockwise
6. Measure, with a 1ml syringe, your Wormwood essence, and add to the cauldron.
7. Measure 0.1mL Boomslang venom in a different syringe and place to the side for a moment
8. Clean the mortar and pestle, add one unicorn horn, and crush it to a fine powder, then add the Boomslang venom. Mix together (it will not make a paste) and set aside for three minutes, then add to the cauldron.
9. Simmer the cauldron for three minutes, then stir three times, clockwise
10. Clean the mortar and pestle, and add two tablespoons of Lacewing flies, one teaspoon of honey, and one teaspoon of water, and crush until it makes a smooth paste. Carefully add the paste to the cauldron
OOC: Hi everyone, welcome to lesson two! I hope you remembered to bring your characters pets in their cages, and put on their lab coats, which are lining the wall, ready for class.
OOC: Class has officially began! Just pretend you've been here all along.
Sam smiled as Rachel replied in the affirmative, carefully placing Ollie on the desk. "Fanks," she replied, leaning forward slightly to greet Haddie on the Ravenclaw's other side. "I'll 'elp too, cos I don't wan' anyfink 'appenin' to Ollie eivver." Though Madam Curie wouldn't possibly let anything happen to a fellow rat, right?
As for why they were asked to bring their pets? Sam hadn't a clue. She'd had a flick through her potions book after seeing the announcement posted, but she hadn't found anything specific. One type of pet, maybe...but not a whole menagerie's worth.
Which led her to think it was something about them being familiars. Except that wouldn't work for Kitty, who didn't have one to bring and had just been offered a random toad.
HMM.
A guess then. "Cos our famili-ehs make us strongeh? 'n' dat'll 'elp our potion?"

Ariadne waved at her friends who'd waved to her then turned to the professor with a nod. Apparently, he had everything all set up and ready to go. Her owl ruffled its feathers, and she cast a quick glance at it before realizing it was just getting comfortable. Poor thing probably had no idea why it had been caged and brought to class with her.
Speaking of which...why did they need their pets?
"There's LOTS of potions dealing with animals!" Ariadne said, raising her hand. "Are we brewing the Animal Calming Draught, Mutatio Animalia, or Comantis Bestiarius?! Because all of those would need our animals to be here!" Ariadne usually wasn't so precise with these kinds of answers, but when you grow up with a potions lab in your house, you kind of get an idea of what's out there.

With his cauldron clean and set up, utensils at the ready, lab coat on, Zeke passed the time until they could start. He side-eyed Icarus every so often, the bird was still thrashing about with its wings and attempting to bite its way out.
... was this the safest way to conduct a lesson? A room of potentially rabid pets such as his.
Olivia received a smile as she passed, and then the next thing he knew Professor Newton was making chit-chat. Why did he think they needed their pets?
He wasn't interested in giving a response out loud, no, instead he started titling his notes page with the date. Really, it couldn't simply be because they needd an animal test subject, they could use any old thing for that. No, it had to be because of some personal connection. Right?

Blaise didn't have a pet, his parents didn't think he would be responsible enough to keep it alive without them behind him every half an hour reminding him to take care of it. For that reason, the young Gryffindor entered the classroom empty handed. The closest thing he had to a pet was the quill that floated along next to him, accompanied by his trusty notebook. He didn't have to feed or clean them but he supposed that was the best part. They would never die if he forgot.
"Morning Professor." He chirped, heading for the wall that hung the lab coats. The boy shrugged his onto his shoulders then went to take his seat.
Just as he sat, he heard the Professor's question. Admittedly it was one he'd been wondering about for the whole walk down.
"No idea Professor but I don't have a pet. Can I still stay?"
At this point in the term and his young life, Blaise Bellaire had skipped enough classes to not necessarily be bothered if he had to leave one but at the same time, Potions was neat and not at all Charms so he...kinda wanted to stay, okay?
Please?

The professor's warm greeting made Elora feel slightly more at ease. All she had to do was focus on the current class and situation. But why on Earth had he asked us to bring our pets. Elora wasn't too worried. She was sure the professor had a good reason, but it baffled her.
"Maybe we need a some part of them for a potion?" Elora said in a quiet voice. She shrugged. That was all she could come up with and now she would just have to wait until we found out.
"Thank you," said Kitty, taking the cage with the toad from Art's hands and looking inside at the rather cute toad. "Does he have a name?" She carried both cages back to the front row of chairs, placed them on a desk and quickly putt on her white lab coat before sitting down. Nearby she saw that the Gryffindor boy whose name she still didn't know didn't have a pet either. "I didn't have a pet either," she told him, showing him her toad. "But Art gave me this toad."
When the professor asked the first question; she was surprised by the suggestion that many of the students were giving that they were going to turn into animals. Transfiguration was not something she had ever done before and she was worried about what might go wrong, especially after last lesson. She stared at her toad and wondered what it would be like be trapped as a toad forever.
But then Ariadne's guesses helped calm her down a bit. "I think it's the animal calming drought too Professor Art. That's a very useful potion to know how to make. Imagine you were walking down a street and a wild dog attacked you?"

What potions were used with animals? Scarlett honestly had no idea. She hadn't really read anything about potions growing up - it just hadn't interested her - and since Snowball was her first pet, she hadn't really had a chance to use him as a potions tester either. So really, she had no idea. She remained silent, petting Snowball through the holes in the carrier to try and calm him down. It was sort of working, but he was still making dinosaur like growls that showed he was definitely still displeased with all this.

Everyone got a nervous smile greeting from Haddie. Rachel didn't need a formal greeting since they were practically sisters and she sat down next to her. Goodbye friends. Haddie was going to miss you all when she died in an hour or so. Did it count as suicide if you didn't mean to kill yourself, you were just doing your potions assignment?
"Professor Newton? Will you see that Asher gets a good home if I don't survive my potion?" This was an important and legit question given her dismal history at both cooking and by extension potioneering. Why did they need to bring their pets then, if they weren't the ones inges.... OOOOOOOOOOOOH! Haddie's eyes went wide with excitement now. "ARE WE MAKING POTIONS TO BECOME ANIMALS!?" This was her dream. Being an animagus was her dream and anything that helped with that or gave her a chance to experience being an animal for a bit while she worked on being an animagus was the greatest assignment ever!
"You!" Haddie whipped around to face Rachel, sticking a very animated and demanding finger obnoxiously in Freckle's face. "You are helping me to successfully brew this thing, no excuses! Got it!?" This would be the most important potions assignment she ever got. And she was not going to fail at it like she had all the other potions.
Art let out a nervous little chuckle, and scratched his chin. “Miss. Denaker, you have my word that n-nothing will… will be happening to you. I’ve been very thorough in checking the ingredients and… and they’re… w-well, they’re fine.” He hoped that might reassure the young lady a bit, because it had definitely taught him the lesson that Peeves was around and could strike at any moment.
He listened to her thoughts as to why they were asked to bring their pets. “No, you’re not becoming pets today,” he said in reply, though it probably did seem like the obvious reason.

Yeah, bud. Know how you feel.
Dot was never sure where to sit in Potions anymore, not without Sophie and now without Kyroh, so she just chose a seat at random and tucked Nimbus under the workstation for now. He'd maybe go to sleep.
"Hullo, Professor. I hope it's something to improve their coat health or something and not a poison to test on them. Because... my kneazle already hates me today, and I don't want to encourage that behavior."
Great Scott, Art was thankful that Miss. Wojack-Gusey’s pet kneazle was locked in a cage. He sensed Madame Curie’s fear, and gave her a little stroke on her head. “Good morning Miss. Wojack-Gusey,” he said as the young Prefect walked through the doors. Art nodded at the thought. A potion to improve coat health… hmm. “Not today, no,” he said. “I-interesting idea though.”

"Hello, Sam. Of course not. You and Ollie are quite welcome to join us.'' She smiled and indicated the seat on her other side before turning to Haddie again whom she had managed to slip a nervous smile before she had turned to Sam. Rachel reached out to pat her best friend on her arm. "It's okay. They'll all be fine,'' she reassured Haddie just as much as she was trying to reassure herself. She understood the demand from the other girl quite well. It was quite understandable as Haddie cared quite a lot for Asher. "I'll do my utmost best.''

Rachel pulled her Puff's cage closer to her as Professor Art commenced the class. She didn't know why she did that; it was more on instinct than anything else, really. But she was very apprehensive about letting Puff be a part of this lesson. She raised her hand to offer her own suggestion. "Perhaps we need their fur, feather or hair to add to the potion we will be brewing today, Professor.''
“We will definitely be needing a sample of your pets!” he replied, gleeful that she had made the guess.

Spotting the rat moving about to the professors head she gave a small laugh. "Hello there Madame Curie, don't you worry Hagan here won't hurt you," she was positive of it. He just wasn't that kind of cat.
With Hagan asleep inside his cage right beside her chair on the floor and her table set with everything she needed she slid from her chair and went to grab her lab coat. She hadn't gotten it earlier due to focusing on getting her furry companion settled in. Slipping the lap coat on and fastening it's buttons she returned to her seat once again. She smiled hearing Haddie ask about transforming into animals. That would be a good guess but somehow she didn't think so. Not today and even when they did make a potion like that last term they hadn't needed their pets. Whatever was the reason though the snake was sure it would be entertaining.[/COLOR]

Once the timer went off, he held up his wooden stirring stick and said “Stir the potion three times, clockwise, with your wooden stirrer. Wooden to signify nature, compared to glass or metal,” he explained, giving his own potion three clockwise stirs.

Tia generally enjoyed potions because of the systematic steps involved with its preparation. However when they were told to bring their pets today, the seventh year felt slightly disheartened because she was probably one of the few who didn't have a pet. It wasn't that she didn't like animals, but more that every summer, she always felt there were more crucial things to spend her galleons on then an animal. Not to mention the school owls served her well enough up until this moment. But not wanting to be unprepared, she had made a trek up to the owlery before class that morning and picked up a lovely brown owl to borrow for the duration of the lesson. So no she had no connection with the owl, other than both being at Hogwarts, but maybe she could still get some kind of effect?
Measuring six cups of water out into her cauldron, the head girl used her wand to light a small flame under her cauldron and then set her timer. Five minutes to wait and study the method. Five minutes to get to know her borrowed pet.

She gently lit her burner with a soft "Incendio!" and smiled as her burner came to life.. She fiddled with it as she waited for her water to start simmering.. She smiled as she looked over at Snowy..
She hoped he would be able to tell her how he liked things here!!

The real question was whether or not they even wanted to know what their familiars were thinking. Like, what if all Nimbus thought about was the source of his next meal? Or whatever it smelled like under Dot's bed? Or just vague feelings of hating everything about her? If that was the case, it was better just NOT to know.
But it didn't stop Dot from doing her classwork. At the professor's direction, she scooted up to the front of the room to retrieve her ingredients, and then she took another pass over all her materials to make sure they were well and truly cleaned. It was one thing to poison herself, and another entirely to hurt her beloved Nimbus.
The cauldron was rescrubbed, all the stirrers, mortars, pestles, and knives were cleaned, and she even went over the measuring spoons the professor had provided. Just being safe, okay? Not that she didn't trust him.

OOOH, they were going to be learning a potion that would help them read their pet's MINDS? Scarlett was excited but...also not sure she wanted to know what Snowball was thinking. Most of the time she was sure he just put up with her constant hugs and kisses because she fed him. And he always had that grumpy look on his face...then again, that WAS a persian cat thing. The squished face. Maybe he was just forever a grumpy looking cat even though he really wasn't.
Leaving her cat in his carrier as she went to gather her supplies (he had stopped wailing, thankfully, and had resorted to just glaring at her from between the bars of his carrier) she put everything in the tin and then happily walked back to her station. She then took her cauldron and walked to the tap, measuring out six cups of water and filling her cauldron before walking carefully back to her station. She didn't want to spill any water and mess up the measurements of her potion!
Now to start the fire. She used a bunsen burner (as she was still not SUPER comfortable with the Incendio charm) to start the flame under her cauldron, which prompted a hiss from Snowball. She rolled her eyes at her melodramatic feline. "Oh come on Snowball, I'm not putting YOU in here," she assured him.

Although Dot was used to filling the cauldron directly with her wand, she didn't mind using one of the measuring cups the professor had provided. It was more precise, about the same as pre-filling a graduated beaker. She filled the cup six times using a trickle of water from her wand and a non-verbal Aguementi. Maybe just showing off a smidgen.
The now spotless cauldron went over the magical flame, and Dot spent a little too much time flickering the height from medium to low and back again. Flick of her wand, flick of her wand... a small flame was too vague for a potion this important. She finally settled on the smallest flame she could muster. There. Now it just needed to simmer for a while, and she could focus on the next ingredients.

Scarlett had been watching the time since she started her flame, counting down the five minutes it was taking for the water to heat up to the appropriate temperature. As she did so, she began to pluck the leaves from her belladonna springs. Fifteen leaves...that took her about a minute, and she still had a few seconds to spare!
She waited until it was five minutes, and then added the fifteen leaves to her potion. Easy enough!

Esme had been there the entire time, she just hadn't been ENJOYING herself. To put it mildly.
As someone terrified of birds, the prospect of being in the room with them had made her feel so overwhelmed that she had considered skipping the lesson. The only reason that she hadn't was that she thought that MAYBE this was an opportunity to try and get over her fear.
So far it wasn't working.
With shaking hands she had cleaned her equipment, glancing at the owls suspiciously as she did so. Even though they were in cages she couldn't be sure that they wouldn't get away. Her owl was the only one that she trusted. Great, I'm becoming paranoid. Shaking her head, she forced herself to focus on what Professor Newton was telling them. If she wasn't feeling so scared and jumpy right now she probably would have enjoyed the lesson. As it was she just wanted to get it over with.
Grabbing everything that she needed from the front, Esme took a deep breath. Hands still shaking, she added 1... 2... 3... 4... 5... 6... cups of water to her cauldron. It was a miracle that she hadn't gotten any over her work area or lab coat and gloves. Sighing, she lit the burner with a small flame and waited five minutes.
If she got through the lesson she felt that she could do anything.

Hmm...an Animal Whisperer Potion? Cool, but Ariadne wasn't quite sure how she felt about that one. What if she could read her owl's mind, and her owl just HATED delivering mail to her and sending out the post? That would really strain their relationship. Honestly, she didn't care what her owl was thinking. Not to be rude, but she just wanted her mail.
Nevertheless, she began cleaning her cauldron and materials to get ready for the brewing.
First, she used her wand to cast water into a measuring instrument and measured out precisely six cups. She added all of it to the cauldron then lit a small flame. Turning to look at the directions, she noted where she had a five minute wait before doing anything else. She stood back and allowed the water to simmer for the full five minutes.

While Professor Art had been answering the students replies, Rachel's eyes had found Esme. The look on her friend's face was enough for Rachel to deduce what was wrong. Esme was scared of birds; very, very scared of them. She barely managed a gracious smile at the Professor when he acknowledged her answer before looking back at Esme. The Eagle needed to offer some words of comfort. She found the opportunity when they went to gather their ingredients.
After gathering her own, Rachel stopped at Esme's workstation. "You'll be fine, Esme. Just concentrate on brewing your potion. If you need me, I'm right over there.'' She indicated with a smile. She wasn't sure of what help she could offer but she would be there for the Hufflepuff.
Back at her own workstation beside Sam and Haddie, Rachel got to work by cleaning each and every of the equipment she would need to use. "Aguamenti,'' she spoke clearly and confidently as she pointed her wand at the cup. "Finite.'' The second incantation was said after the cup was filled. The first year poured the water into the cauldron then repeated the steps five times.
Next, the burner was lit with the Fire Making charm and she adjusted it to a small flame. While waiting for the five minutes to elapse, she began making notes in her book.

Alright, next step was to crush the fluxweed...but only enough to 'increase the surface area' according to the instructions. Um...WHAT? UGH. That was going to be difficult. She didn't want to overdo it...
Taking her three sprigs, she dropped them in her mortar and took the pestle and started to grind away. She did it very slowly, and found that she didn't need all that much pressure to accomplish the task. After just a few moments she had a relatively rough mash, similar to what the professor had in his own mortar. So she took that to mean it was a success.

Five minutes.
Four minutes.
Three minutes.
Two minutes.
One minute.
Rachel kept her eyes fixed like a watchful eagle on her pink wrist watch as the five minutes elapsed. She already had her small hands filled with exactly fifteen leaves from the two Belladonna sprigs which she had taken her time to pull apart. Immediately after the proper minutes ticked by, she dropped the leaves into her cauldron of water.
The girl took this opportunity to cast another look at Esme and then at Haddie and her work. She was looking out for her two friends during this class.

Hearing Rachel's words of comfort, Esme's eyes flickered towards her friend. The gesture meant a lot and she found herself smiling despite the fact that there wasn't much to smile about with the way that she was feeling at the moment. "Thanks. That means a lot. I think I might need the help." It was hard to follow instructions when feeling scared and ill at ease. She hadn't even brought her owl to the lesson, instead opting for her Pygmy Puff, Sparkle. Even though she felt comfortable with Barnaby, at this point the thought of using a bird had freaked her out too much - even if HE was the bird in question.
Plucking leaves off of a sprig wasn't easy with shaking hands, and Esme muttered under her breath as she attempted to separate the 15 Belladonna leaves. The sprigs kept falling onto her desk which made her mutter even more. Why had Professor Newton made them do this for the lesson? Why couldn't he have chosen any other potion? So long as birds weren't involved she was good to go even if this wasn't her best subject.
Finally after what felt like a million years she had managed to pull away all of the leaves. Once they had all been added to the cauldron, she put her head against the desk which caused Sparkle to squeak. It seemed that her Pygmy Puff had picked up on her mood. How perceptive of her.

Thankfully, Tywin had stopped complaining somewhere between the lesson having begun and the instructions. Honestly, Brooklyn wouldn’t have had a problem silencing her cat if he hadn’t stopped on his own, but it was amusing to see him sitting there regally just eyeing the other animals in the room. It was like he thought that if he acted like this, nobody would remember the complaining, and that was so much like her that she had to hide a grin. Something told her that getting a glimpse into his mind wouldn’t really be that surprising to her. Provided they didn’t end up with tainted ingredients again.
The nervous tic in Professor Newton’s voice hardly made her trust him any more than she had when she’d come into the classroom, yet she still made her way to the front to collect the necessary ingredients in their little dishes, along with the syringes and measuring spoons allotted. At least she’d be prepared, as she always tried to be when it came to potions lessons. Of course, she Scourgified everything before she did anything else, like adding the potion steps into her journal. She wasn’t stupid, and she wasn’t planning on accidental poisoning yet again. Once everything was cleaned, she set her cauldron over the burner. Time to measure out the six cups of water, carefully gathered using Aguamenti.
As long as Tywin kept behaving, she didn’t think she needed to worry about him.

a potion allowing the user to get a glimpse into an animal’s mind. More likely to work with a familiar rather than a common animal, but still useful either way.

An Animal Whisperer Potion?
This was something a bit different but still something Hady was rather interested in doing. Normally she would say she understood Hagan fairly well but to truly know what he was thinking, how he felt would be really nice. It would give her true confirmation that she was indeed the good pet owner she always thought herself to be.
With a quill in her hand she began the process of neatly taking down all the notes that had appeared on the board and there was a fair deal of them this morning. It didn't take all to long and soon enough she was pushing her parchment along with the quill to the edge of her table and rising to her feet.
Making her way to the front of the room Hadleigh carefully gather exactly what she would need. Today she even double checked or well more like triple checked everything to ensure it was all there, the proper amount and whatnot. One could never be to careful. With everything in her arms she returned to her table laying it all out nicely.
Grabbing up her wand she made sure to cast a perfectly aimed 'scourgify' over everything to make sure it was all clean. Setting her wand down she picked up her cauldron and set it on the burner before using her wand once more to cast 'aquamenti' for water. Measuring out exactly the six cups needed Hady added the water into her cauldron.

Oh good to hear that there would be no animals (especially her own precious Preston) got harm on this class. But she had no idea why the Professor asked them to bring their own pet to the class today.
An animal whisperer potions? Well that's uh... cool. But when Professor Newton said that he used it to understand his pet rat.... Oh, that's why he acted so weird around Madame Curie. Alright, let's just start brewing! Ava gathered all the ingredients that she's gonna need to brew this potions. The first thing that she have to do before starting the brewing is to make sure that the utensils are already cleaned. She used the scouring charm to clean the cauldron and the others too. Then, she conjured water from her wand and added six cups of the water to the cauldron.

Ariadne kept a close watch on the time as she waited for the water to simmer. In the meantime, she collected the Belladonna and began plucking the leaves off. One...two...five...ten...fifteen. She quickly recounted them to make sure all fifteen were there. A quick look at the time told her she had two minutes left to let the water simmer. There really wasn't anything left to do right now, since she couldn't add the leaves until the five minutes was up, so Ariadne just stood back and waited.
Finally, when the full two minutes was up, she added the fifteen leaves of Belladonna to the cauldron. She cast a quick glance at her owl, who still didn't have a name. She was STILL skeptical about this potion. Communicating with her owl might end up being really cool and awesome, but she didn't really see the point right now, AND she was still scared she'd hear thoughts that the owl didn't like her or something.

Once she poured six cups of water to her cauldron, Ava started lit the fire and set it into a small flame. Based on the instruction that Professor Newton had written on the board, she needed to simmer it for five minutes. Okay, she's gonna wait very patiently for this. While she waited for the water, the young lioness wrote down the instructions to her notebook.
Five minutes later, the water had simmered and the next step was... the Belladona leaves. She plucked fifteen belladona leaves from its sprig and then added them to the cauldron. So far it's been good... Well, she just did the first two steps.
