Default Potions Lesson 1

Thank you Stefan

Art was sitting at his desk with Madame Curie in one hand. The other hand was giving her a good scratch. There was quite a strong smell of menthol surrounding Art, whose knees were playing up. He'd rubbed some cream onto them every morning since the beginning of term, but he was quite used to the smell. If you have a cold or a blocked nose, you might find your nasal passage and sinuses suddenly clear. On Art's table up the front are solid coloured containers full of the ingredients, all of Art's equipment already out and organised, as well as a vial of fluorescent yellow potion.

The door is wide open, and the room is nice and warm. On one wall, hooked over the pegs, are your lab coats. Some are still white, some are unfortunately pink (owing to Miffy). Come in, take a seat, and get ready.

SPOILER!!: OOC

  • Come on in!
  • The story behind some of the lab coats being PINK are thanks to the incident in the laundry. This happened IC about a month ago, and as the coats are used to protect your uniforms, they probably aren't washed too regularly. SOME of them were in the laundry and turned pink, others were ether washed before, after, or not yet after the incident. So feel free to grab a pink one if you want.
  • Please read over Art's guidelines
  • The ingredients are in solid containers, so you can't see what's inside them but you can come up and have a look at the potion and have a guess if you wish
  • Chat amongst yourselves! We will get started in approximately 22 hours. Opening a little early as I'm a bit unwell and might not be on when I originally planned on opening.
  • For those of you new to the RPG, WELCOME to Potions! IC we are in October, so this isn't our first lesson. We would have had about 2 each week since the beginning of term, so you'll already know Professor Newton and his rat Madame Curie.

Then there were those that wanted to ruin the fun by casting spells. Unfortunately for the pixies some of those spells hit their mark. The class was spotted by electric blue pixies floating about. These were the ones that had been frozen.

The ones that had been missed decided to cause one last round of chaos before moving to other parts of the castle. With loud EEEEEHEHEE! they grabbed random ingredients from student cupboard. They zoomed over the humans and dropped ingredients into the cauldrons and onto their heads.

One fairy dumped a vial of armadillo bile onto NEWTON'S head before their exit.
Seriously. SIRIUSLY! Stupid little buggers! Juno huffed when her spell only froze a third of the Pixies that hadn't been frozen by other students. She really needed to practice more. When the ones that weren't frozen left, she found a rather large cauldron in the corner and started grabbing the frozen ones and putting them in there. "Freaking PIXIES!" She wished Miffy and Peeves would get a grip already!

Noticing the professor was covered in armadillo bile, she sighed, "Are you ok, Professor?" AND WHERE THE HECK WAS BRI-----Is Brian frozen? She looked towards her co-prefect.

And this Hufflepuff was pretty sure that any man with a sensible scientific mind would know better than to keep a rat as a pet. Lab rats (which were actually mice, for the record) were not pets. They were subjects of humane scientific study. There was a line to be drawn and it had to be drawn, okay.

So throw flying blue THINGS into the mix, and you have one very disgruntled Hufflepuff. And with Juno casting that all-so-powerful immobulus, Brian accidentally dove right in front of the spell in an effort to get away from the blasted pixies and guess what? The spell might not have incapacitated the pixies, but they definitely put a halt to the motion of your resident sixth year.

So he supposed he'd just have to stand here.

Bugger it all, he should have dropped Potions after OWL level.
Then the light bulb went off. "Oh, no! Of course, that's why it didn't work on all of the Pixies!" She put her cauldron of pixies down on a table and rushed over to her co-prefect to unfreeze him. "FINITE!!" She cast the spell, hoping she didn't hurt him. This was going to injure their already weak relationship.

"I am so sorry, Brian! Are you ok?" She asked, placing a hand on his arm. She really didn't want him to hate her, she really felt like crying right now, which was odd because she never cried. Hopefully he would be understanding but, she also didn't know him that well and wasn't going to assume he would be understanding.

---------------------

Once all of the incapacitated pixies were picked up, she checked her cauldron to see if whatever those pesky buggers had been spraying around the room had gotten into her potion. Luckily, her potion was safe! It was still the light brown color it should have been. She quickly looked over the steps to see what she needed to do next. Ah, yes! Bring it back to a boil.

She lit a flame and got her cauldron to heat up. Once she got it to a boil, she grabbed her wand, and while turning her wand counter-clockwise over the potion she said the incantation, "Garrula Lingua!" Then she brought the potion down to a simmer just like the instructions said.

Afer that she added 1 leveled tablespoon of activated charcoal. She then stirred counter clock-wise, very slowly, three times. Once she was finished stirring she added a pinch of ground bezoar, then stirred the potion once counter-clockwise, removing it from the heat as she finished.

Now she had to wait patiently and let the potion cool. She watched as it slowly started changing colors. It went from a very light brown to a mustard yellow, to a canary yellow, and then finally a highlighter florescent yellow! It was so bright! She watched for a few more minutes, noting that the color had changed at all for about 10 minutes, she separated out the potion into 2 vials, one for the Professor that had her name on it, and one for herself to use. She didn't plan on using it on anyone else, so she cleaned out her cauldron, and her work space before handing in her potion.

She quietly walked towards the professor, handing him her sample. "Professor, do we need to take the potion before we leave or can we save the one for ourselves for later?" She really didn't feel like taking it right now. She had embarrassed herself enough today with freezing Brian.

If Kat wanted to be a healer went she grew up, she was going to have to focus more on potions, and less on other things... Was she daydreaming or something she had not idea but when she looked around she noticed that people were working on something.... Oh yes. The babbling beverage potion. She almost forgot that she was sitting in potions. Oppps.

EHEHEHEHEEEEEEE!
She was about to get ready to get up and start on her potion when she felt a tug on her hair. Ouch! What in the name of Merlin? PIXIES. Not the time to mess with this girl. She was having to catch up on the lesson as it was. Now this. Juno must have been close enough to freeze the blue creature that had her hair.

Once it was froze Kat pulled her hair out of the pixies grasp. HAHA Kat 1 pixie 0.

Now she could get back... start her potion. She got her ingredients and got them ready. Like every other potion recipe she knew she had to start out with clean equipment, she cleaned all of her equipment first. Once that was done she filled her cauldron with water. Then she lit the fire and let it go to a simmer. Adding the Fresh Alihotsy leaves to the cauldron. All she had to do was wait 20 minutes and prep the other ingredients.

After a little longer battling with the Pixies pulling on his hair, Dalton was relieved to see that they had left. He collected the last of his ingredients from the floor, before straightening his robes and turning back to the cauldron. Throwing in the Alihotsy leaves, he set a timer for twenty minutes and then turned to place the rest of his ingredients in order of when they'd be used. When that was done, he spent the rest of the stewing time writing notes on the potion, paying special attention to the addition of the charcoal and bezoar to inhibit an overdose.

At the end of the twenty minutes, Dalton turned his timer off and looked up at the board. He spooned out the remaing leaves, and added the billywig stings and erumpent tongue, then set another timer for ten minutes and began stirring counter clockwise.

Head Honcho Potionman was pretty happy with his answer, so chalk that up to his happily growing list of #NailedIt moments

But now it was time to COOK! Or rather MIX. Because Beverage hehehe

So off he goes collecting the ingredients for the drink, once again meticulously selecting the finest ingredients, because even Bartenders are picky with their ingredients. Or so his dad says.

Once he has all that he needs, he set to work on his workstation. He gave his self-stirring pot a quick wash, since it was already clean, before smoothly adding in water and incendio-ing the bottom to start the heating process. It wasnt long before the water started to boil, and the Gryffindor Ace scaled back the heat so that the water would just simmer. And looks like it was ready for tea-- or rather Alihotsy leaves. Alihotsy tea? Hmmm something to consider...

--and it was then that they were invaded by the pesky pixies. "Gah! NOGOWAYSHOOSHOO!!" he waved them off while protecting his pot. Because its a hassle to find the most perfect Alihotsy leaves again ok?

Eventually the pests have gone and Tenacius peeked at his simmering pot. Timer pinged that 20 min is up-- just in time! He filtered out the Alihotsy leaves and cranked the heat up on the tea water.

And now it was boiling. In goes a couple of Billywig stings and that pinch of powdered Erumpent tongue, setting the timer again for 10 min. Oh and a tap on the stirrer part of his cauldron "Counter Clockwise."

Hurrying back to his cauldron, he peered inside, relieved to see it was just barely simmering. Even more so that it wasn't boiling. Plopping all the ingredients onto the table top, he grabbed the fresh alihotsy leaves and measured out five grams... more or less. With the water now simmering properly, he didn't want to waste too much time in measuring in case time was a factor with the whole water simmer thing.

Let it simmer in the water for...

"Twenty minutes?" he muttered to himself, face scrunching up into dislike. More waiting. Nevertheless, it was probably a good thing. Gave him more time to prepare the other ingredients, like the blackboard said. Two dried billywig stings was easy enough. Didn't have to do anything to them. Pinch of powdered erumpent tongue. Gross, but simple. Two drops of leech juice, he got that ready. Another simple task. Five ml of armadillo bile was probably the toughest on the list. This whole measuring stuff wasn't his forte.

However, after preparing the other ingredients, he sat in his seat and stared at his cauldron with a relatively neutral look... realizing he never really did start timing the whole simmering process. HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN!? Merlin's soggy socks! He was not going to be re-doing it for a THIRD time. Nobody had time for that.

Throwing his hands up and scowling, he fished out the traces of the wet alihotsy leaves, at least wanting to get THAT step right. Nothing but water in THIS cauldron. The boiling part he had no issue with, considering it was probably the easiest step in the process. Just turn up the flame a bit.

Or a lot.

10. Circle wand counter-clockwise over cauldron whilst saying the incantation ‘garrula lingua’ and bring down to a simmer

Harvey was determined to ignore the havoc around him. He was already aware of how bad he was at Potions, he wasn't going to let a bunch of pixies make him look any worse than the shooting golden sparks around him already did!

He followed the next instructions flawlessly, his hand shaking slightly as he circled it about the cauldron and whispered the incantation.

When he brought it down to a simmer, the sparks calmed down a bit. Hmm. So they reacted to temperature. Interesting...

11. Add 1 levelled tablespoon of activated charcoal

Harvey tipped the teaspoon into his cauldron and squinted in case something explosive happened. It didn't. He breathed a sigh of relief, watching the charcoal swirl around and dirty up the clean gold.

12. Stir counter-clockwise three (3) times slowly

He made to stir the potion, twisting around at the same time to make sure there was no pixie about to drop something on his head, but he saw that most of them were floating around, some making to leave, and some immobilised by the more determined students. He had enough with the potions assignment on his hands, he didn't have it in him to try to stop pixies too.

As all this went through his mind, he stirred. Three times. Clockwise.

He turned back as he withdrew his hand, glanced back at the instructions... and realised his mistake.

Again. He could have screamed.

His potion now had sparks as well as blood-red flames shooting out of it.

13. Add a pinch of ground bezoar

Harvey added this anyway, once again readying himself for an explosion. But, none came. In fact, the bezoar seemed to have a rather... calming effect on the potion. It stopped emitting anything over than red-coloured steam.

So, a a bezoar could be used as an antidote to poisons and... an antidote to potions mistakes? Interesting...

14. Stir once counter clockwise and remove from heat

Harvey definitely stirred counter-clockwise this time. DEFINITELY.

15. As it cools, it will turn from a light brown colour to a fluorescent yellow

He monitored the colour of his potion carefully, but no brown-to-yellow transition occurred. Instead, there was a gold-to-red/orange change. It kind of looked like flames, only a lot more... solid.

16. When the colour stops lightening, you may bottle your potion. It will be approximately ten serves, if stored in 20mL vials.

17. Label one vial for the Professor to analyse, and ingest another vial. Save the others for your own use, or dispose of.

"Harvey Jarvis, 1st year Ravenclaw"
read Harvey's label.

He almost laughed at the idea of trying his creation. There was no way he would do that. He got rid of everything else, and while cleaning up hi equipment wondered how dismally he would do this time. At least nothing exploded, though.

It was nice to know she'd been on the right track with her thinking. Of course, her answer had been pretty broad instead of something specific, so it was bound to overlap the true answer at least a little, but still. She was pleased.

Rula carefully copied the writing on the board into her notes, double checking to make sure she had everything written down correctly. Wouldn't want to end up adding 12 drops of something instead of 2, would we?

She moved on to gathering up the ingredients, making a couple trips just to make sure she didn't carry too much and drop something.

Once that was done, it was time to start on the first step of cleaning...

Well, not actually everywhere, and Rula's area had only really been hit with more of a sprinkling than that older Slytherin girl next to the older Hufflepuff. Said older girl didn't appear to be taking the accident very well.

Now, Rula enjoyed a bit of dramatics herself, but she also wasn't much of a fan of getting someone else in trouble over something as silly as water. At least someone was stepping in to help the Hufflepuff out until the professor came over.

Rula watched the drama unfold, completely distracted from her potion making until the professor settled the matter-

Rula quickly cast a shield charm over her ingredients to protect them - and just in time too, because suddenly a couple swooped down and were TUGGING ON HER HAIR.

"OW! Stop it!" She swatted at them, trying to get them to leave...

Thank. Merlin.

Could she focus on making her potion now? Hopefully.

Her cauldron was Scourgify'd a couple times just to make absolutely sure it was clean after all that pixie chaos, and then she cast Aguamenti into a measuring cup to make sure she got exactly 500ml of water. That was poured into the cauldron, and then came the Incendio so the water would simmer.

So far, so good.

  • Bring back to a boil
  • Circle wand counter-clockwise over cauldron whilst saying the incantation ‘garrula lingua’ and bring down to a simmer
  • Add 1 levelled tablespoon of activated charcoal
  • Stir counter-clockwise three (3) times slowly
  • Add a pinch of ground bezoar
  • Stir once counter clockwise and remove from heat
  • As it cools, it will turn from a light brown colour to a fluorescent yellow
  • When the colour stops lightening, you may bottle your potion. It will be approximately ten serves, if stored in 20mL vials.
  • Label one vial for the Professor to analyse, and ingest another vial. Save the others for your own use, or dispose of.

Characteristics: Fluorescent, solid yellow
Level: Beginner - Intermediate
Information: Dose is 20ml. Smaller dose will limit effects, larger dose will have no extra effect due to the addition of activated charcoal and ground bezoar, which adds a protection to the drinker.

Alright potions. Let's do this Winchester. Colt already got his cauldron all set up for the lesson. He hoped it wouldn't fail on him, I mean it was a pretty cheap cauldron to begin with. He saw dirt and such on it that made his nose scrunch up. He squinted at the board to see the directions. "Man can the professors write any smaller?" he muttered to himself. He scribbled the whole potion recipe till his eyes were crossed. Then he went to work. He saw he needed to clean his cauldron. Well no duh. He got his wand out of his robes and said, "Scourgify!" and voila. His cauldron was clean. He added some water to it, he measured the 500 ml of water and then brought his cauldron to a simmer with, "Incendio!" He brought to a little simmer and said, "Finite." Then he saw on his list, he needed to add some leaves? Oh right he needed to go to the front and get his ingredients. Come on Winchester get with the game plan. He walked up to the front and collected everything.

He went back to his seat and saw he needed 5g of the leaves. He added them in and saw he needed to leave them in for 20 minutes. After he prepared his other ingredients, he removed the traces of leaves and added the dried billywig stings and a pinch erumpent tongue. Now he needed to boil it for 10 minutes? He shrugged and said, "Incendio!" and it started to boil and he counted while continuously stiring counter-clockwise.

"Oh, oh it's my pleasure," Art said, and put Miss Griffel's rat over with Madame Curie, chuckling at her comment, and whilst he trusted that his dear wouldn't be nasty to little Flam, he was going to keep an eye on them, just in case. But for now, they seemed to be okay. A little later, she asked about the colour of her potion. Art looked at it, and saw that it did have an orange hue. "Well... hmm d-do you think you did anything out of step or added the ingredients differently? I mean this does happen... sometimes potions don't look the same but they still work. I don't think there's enough time to re-do it but just finish it off and see what happens. It might turn the fluorescent yellow or... or not, but... perhaps we can brew it together another time to see if it works then." He was always open to brew Potions with students, to ensure they had the practice.

Art gave a nod towards Miss Tate, "I don't blame him," he said with a chuckle. "It's just water but it can do damage if it were t-to go a bit crazy inside." Imagine!

Art ran a hand nervously through his hair. He just did not get what the fuss was. And he didn't fancy listening to the little squabble between the girls. He was a male, and had always been male. He grew up with brothers, and he only had one daughter. He did not have experience with managing problems between teenage girls. "Oh, no it's f-fine, Miss Skeeter. It will dry," he chuckled nervously. He was quite relieved that Miss Traulton was going to come up the front, at least to work by herself and for there to be less drama. "Y-your hair looks p-perfectly fine, though," he said, looking utterly confused. It wasn't ruined, in his very manly opinion. Of course, he wasn't a girl so he didn't know how much of an ACTUAL problem it was. Water + heat = humidity = FRIZZ! He gathered a few other things and helped her bring them to a spot up the front.......

Then, when a second before things were fine, suddenly they were NOT. Pixies! "GREAT SCOTT!" Art shouted, watching as his classroom, previously filled with students mostly working quietly, a clean, if somewhat damp classroom, and aromas of a brewing potion, was now CHAOS. "Good job Mr Winslow," Art said to the young Ravenclaw, who was first to try and immobilise the beasts. Miss Traulton was hiding under his desk, something he was quite relieved about. Water in her hair had been a disaster, he dreaded the thought of what would happen if Pixies got to it! He hadn't even noticed those students who were working determinedly through the attack, but they were doing a marvelous job at ignoring it. Mr Fletcher was using a more physical, muggle way of defending himself, which Art would have smiled at, had he not been busy with the chaos. And then there were those who were doing what they could to protect their potion! That was a marvellous sight for the Potion Master. Then there were those who looked like they had no idea what to do. "Immobulus, everyone. ih-MOH-byoo-luhs!" and he got his wand out, pointing it up to the Pixies. "Immobulus," he said loudly, performing the mountain-like wand movement. "All hands on deck everyone, if you wish!" He saw Miss Darcy putting her wand up and he gave her a "Well done!"..... and then he felt something on his head, JUST as the Pixies were leaving. Art saw the vial of Admadillo Bile fall to the floor, realising what it was. "Ugh," he said, getting rather angry. Miss Skeeter and Miss Darcy had come to Art's rescue. "I'm... well I'm okay. Thank you very much Miss Skeeter!" he said, feeling the Admadillo bile vanish from his head. He didn't really want to be washing his hair right now. "Are you alright?" They both seemed to be having issues with their knees right now. And then Miss Darcy was rushing towards Mr Woods. He looked up just in time to see the frozen prefect turned mobile again by his co-Prefect. "Oh dear..." he said.

Once all the chaos had calmed down, Art's job was in trying to calm the class and ensure everyone could finish their potions. Miss Franks-Mundie was asking about bottling up some of the potion. "Oh absolutely! Marvellous idea, yes, of course," he said with a big grin, his anger beginning to deminish.

And before he knew it, some were finished! He took the vials off those who had handed them in, putting them safely aside for making later.

OOC: You have about 30 hours until Art will be ending the lesson. Everyone is doing a fantastic job!

This was the longest twenty minutes ever....

Kat had prepped the other ingredients while she wanted. Still with about five of those minutes left. To keep herself busy she cleaned up around her work station. There was a little bit of a mess, when she measured out the leaves. When that was cleaned up the her timer went off.

First thing she did was remove all traces of the leaves. Making sure that no leaves were left. Then she took it back to a boil. The next thing she needed was the two billywig stings, along with the erumpent tongue.

SHE HAD TO STIR CONTINUOUSLY FOR TEN WHOLE MINUTES???

Oh Merlin her arm was going to fall off stirring for that long. She started stirring, and watched the time. The was one hard thing about standing over her potions, It was so hard for the Hufflepuff to stay still and in one place for long. Ten long minutes later, arm still intact, but a bit stronger, Kat could actually see a little lump of muscle now. She cleaned her thermometer so she could tell when her potion and cooled to room temperature.

Yet again it was more waiting.... this was a very timely potion wasn't it?

Art looked up, in the middle of adding a few dashes of ingredients, and stirring, when Miss Phillips was there.

Art had a chuckle. "Ahh you've not been studying your ingredients," he noted, in a friendly tone. Not accusingly. Not this man. "Well, we've got the alihotsy leaves here," he said. Those ones were pretty obvious, being that they were leaves. He pointed to the two powdery looking ones, "This is the powdered erumpent tongue, and this one is the bezoar. See how the bezoar is more brown, but the erumpent tongue is more pink? And... uhh the activated charcoal is this black one, the Billywig stings look like little sticks here, and the Armadillo Bile here is the bright green one, and the leech juice is a... a sort of red-black one. Bit confusing between that and the charcoal." He looked up with a smile. "Some of them take a little while to distinguish between though, but you'll get better with practice."

He was not that far off the truth then, with at least one of his theories. Despite being right, however, Daxton did not waste his time with smugness or feelings of accomplishment. For now, he left his notes mostly as they were, but crossed out the incorrect theory he had written, in such a way that he could still see what was written there.

The Babbling Beverage potion, then, or this safer variation. The original potion was easy, for beginners, and so this one was not likely to be much harder - even the portion of the recipe which called for spellwork was less likely to throw up issues for him, not now he had started to master non-verbals. In any case, this potion, in Daxton's eyes, was boring, so he was already mentally running through a range of potions ingredients and their properties, because maybe he wanted to tweak the potion today, too. Perhaps find a way to make this version last for longer, or maybe there was a way to elicit a certain kind of babbling from the subject. Would there be an ingredient to change the language? Or perhaps he could adjust it so that there was an element of truth in the words that were spoken... Daxton thought he quite liked the sound of that. A Babbling Veritaserum, or something of the sort.

So, while those around him got started on brewing their potions, Daxton focused his attention entirely on his notes, jotting down ideas and possibilities into his notebook according to that very line of thinking. If he could brew it without being noticed, too, he might get a chance to test the unknown potion on an unwitting student in this very room. That would be particularly interesting, whether the first attempt was right, or very very wrong. There were plenty of students in this room that Daxton would not mind accidentally poisoning.

SPOILER!!: Notebook

Babbling Beverage

Activated Charcoal - adsorptive qualities
Bezoar - healing qualities, specifically an antidote

  • Both used to counteract the effects of poisoning
  • Could potentially be added to the potion to pre-emptively deter poisoning or overdose of potion - if this is the case, why would it not already be part of the recipe?
  • Theory: these ingredients make the potions safer for consuming large amounts, but weaken them, and lessen the effects
  • Theory: these ingredients are purposefully used to dilute the potion
  • Theory: an entirely new potion has been created (unlikely, in this case, but possible)

Ingredients
  • 500ml Water
  • 5g Fresh Alihotsy leaves
  • 2 dried Billywig Stings
  • Pinch of powdered Erumpent tongue
  • 5ml Armadillo bile

  • Add water to cauldron, and bring to a simmer

Notes
(to make Babbling Veritaserum)
  • Jobberknoll feathers are a vital ingredient - used in truth serums and memory potions, so would be unlikely to produce an effective Babbling Veritaserum without this ingredient.
  • When introducing Jobberknoll feathers, will need to calculate (or attempt a trial and error approach): how many, at what point in the pre-established order to add them, whole/cut up/powdered, spread throughout the brewing process or all at once. Note: research other truth serums and analyse.
  • Consider Veritaserum as an ingredient, but be mindful that it may counteract with the rest of the ingredients, hence why Babbling Veritaserum does not already exist - anyone can just add some to it. Adding potions to potions does not tend to end well.
  • Other Veritaserum ingredients combined with the Babbling Beverage method may result in a favourable outcome.
  • It would perhaps be wise to raise the amount of alihotsy leaves and/or billywig stings; both to work with the extra ingredient of the Jobberknoll feathers, and to keep the subject happy and "willing" to keep babbling through the truth telling.
  • If this fails, adjust all ingredients relative to each other, raising them all so that the consistency of the potions stays as it should. Some trial and error almost definitely necessary.
  • May require an ingredient to lower/vanish inhibitions, so that not only truth is spoken, but secrets.
  • Should consid

But Daxton's notes had stopped suddenly right there. He had heard high-pitched laughter, as though from far away, echoing through the corridors. Not knowing whether or not it was real, Daxton had stared right at the door, mentally cursing how this, the safest seat in the room, could also be the most dangerous one.

And then, pixies. Daxton had wasted absolutely no time at all in getting himself underneath his desk, notebook and all, having no desire to have his clothes or hair yanked around by the irksome creatures. Then there was the shouting; not from the intruders, but from the students and the professor in the room, as everyone attempted to control the pixies. It was horrible. Awful. Loud sounds in the dungeons - especially yelling, and high-pitched cackling - travelled in the most obnoxious way, echoing repeatedly, painfully loud. By the time the pixies had left the room, the noise still felt like it was reverberating off of the walls and directly into Daxton's eardrums, despite his palms being pressed flat against the sides of his head.

This was stupid. This school made no sense; animals could just randomly break into classrooms, wreak havoc, causing an explosion of sound, and once they were gone everyone just continued with their potions, acted like nothing had happened, like it was a regular occurrence.

Though, Daxton had to admit; at this school, it was.

Well, he was not staying in this classroom. Getting out from under the desk and straightening up, Daxton made sure he still had everything he arrived to class with. Wasting no time, he closed the very short gap between his seat and the door, and slipped out into the corridor after the pixies.

He would come back later to attempt brewing his variation of the potion. A lot later. When the pixies were all dead far, far away from here.

But before he could do that he actually had to brew it first.

So the 4th year Hufflepuff got his game face on and went to grabbed everything that he needed. Equipments and ingredients and his wits.

After scourgifying all of his equipments, Owen added the water into the cauldron, brought it to a light simmer with a now well-practiced incendio spell then added in the alihotsy leaves. He had to let it stew for 20 minutes so he spent the better half of that duration to prepare his ingredients...measuring them as necessary and arranging them neatly on his station like he always did. He was particularly neat when it came to potion-making.

It was about 12 minutes in since he began stewing the alihotsy leaves when the cornish pixies attacked and was just about EVERYWHERE. Owen managed to escape all the chaos when he immediately flattened himself on the floor. Can't let the pixies pull his hair! *whaaa*

He could hear that some of his peers were casting spells to immobilize the pixies. He wanted to help, really, but pixies pulled hair like their lives depended on it. Owen knew because he already went through that and he didn't want to experience it again. Another thing that Owen didn't want to experience again was what happened next.

The pixies were dragging someone that Owen could vaguely recognize as a fellow Hufflepuff and then it happened. She hit her knees on his desk, knocking over the entire contents of his cauldron and Owen had pulled himself from the floor just in time not to get splashed and soaked by the brew he had so meticulously worked on a few minutes ago. "NONonononononono......"

MERLIN.

What.

A.

Freaking.

Disaster.

Owen could only gawk at the mess that used to be his work place. "Huh." Then the pixies were leaving - ugh, you better not come back! - well, not before dumping quite an amount of armadillo bile on their Professor. But someone was cleaning him up...the same one who caused Owen's cauldron to be upended. She really should help him clean up too.

Because now he had to start over...from way way top.

Aw, man.

She could feel something splash against her leg and it burned a little, eliciting a yelp of pain as she leaped to the side out of reflex. Blue eyes going first to the floor and then following the small stream of spilled potion to the desk, Paige's mouth dropped when she realized what had happened.

"OHMYGOSH, Owen...I'm so sorry," she squeaked, getting her wand out and...well...apparently using her bread and butter spell of today's lesson which ironically had nothing to do with the brew itself. She could ignore the mild burns to her ankles for now, her knee socks had given enough of a shield against the boiling liquid at least, and quickly began to remove the liquid from the floor. "You didn't get hurt, did you?" No...burns from toppled over cauldron and splashed liquid, right? "I'm really sorry..."

This was why Paige Samantha Skeeter should be taking Potions as an independent study. Honestly.

OOC: You have about 30 hours until Art will be ending the lesson. Everyone is doing a fantastic job!

The seventh year nodded her head in affirmation that she was alright, still rubbing her knees however. "Just a bruise, professor," she murmured, probably a deep one at that. She would get some ice on it as soon as the lesson concluded. "Pixies are deceptively strong creatures." Especially when there were three or four of them pulling on your wand at once.

Wait...what was going on with Bria------- oh. Paige burried her face in her hands.

She was....just going to make her way back to her station then...which also happened to bring her by Lancelot's and his nerves that were doing a lot more bubbling than his potion......although his potion would probably EXPLODE soon given the amount of heat he had just administered. "Lancelot, relax," she laughed softly as she leaned over and turned the flame down a little. "It's...the hardest bit but also the most important when it comes to brewing." Something she too was clearly still struggling with.

Leaving the Gryffindor to his potion, Paige finally arrived back at her station and extinguished the fire to allow her potion to cool to room temperature - which felt like it too AGES and she was almost tempted to use a cooling charm to help speed up the process...but Hufflepuffs were a patience bunch, usually, so she resisted. Armadillo bile in one hand and spoon in the other, Paige carefully poured it into her cauldron and stirred the required five times and then grabbed the leech juice and stirred for 20 before using her wand to light the burner once more, relieved at the light brown color her potion had turned.

Done, Paige leaned back a bit in her stool and began practicing the incantation to the spell aloud, taking great care on enunciation so, you know, the brew didn't blow up. Efficient as she was at Tergeo today...no more, thanks.

That twenty minutes a few steps ago was nothing compared to the time it was taking for the potion to cool down to room temperature. She was bored, and all of this waiting was killing her. Impatient Katerina is impatient.

Once it was cooled now enough, the hufflepuff added the armadillo in to the mixture. Then to stir it. She took the stirrer and stirred it 5 times counter clockwise

1...2...3...4...5...

Next she tookthe leech juice, dropped two drops of the juice into the cauldron. This time it was a twenty stirs

1...2...3...4...5... 15...16...17...18...19...20

She set the cauldron back to boil. Then she picked up her wand and circled it over her cauldron, "Garrula lingua." Then turned it back to simmer once more. She was almost there. Next she added the levelled tablespoon of activated charcoal.

Sitting back on his stool, he clasped his hands tightly together, not so patiently waiting for the water to boil. Though in a matter of seconds, he could feel his face begin to lightly heat up and it wasn't due to the warmth of the room. His attention turned to Paige as she turned down the flame underneath his cauldron. "Oh... right," he nodded, fidgeting slightly. Even boiling water wasn't as easy as it seemed.

After almost five years of potions, you'd think he'd have this down by now.

Alas, even with the reduced flame under his cauldron, the alihotsy leaf infused water began to boil. He glanced towards the older Hufflepuff's work station with a hint of a smile before setting onto the next task. Leaning forward, he added in two dried billywig stings and a pinch (?) of powdered erumpent tongue... Guys, how much was a pinch?

Using his stirrer to stir the contents clockwise, he was two stirs in before he stopped, eyes on the blackboard. Counter-clockwise. A quick adjustment later, he began stirring into a counter-clockwise motion. For ten minutes. TEN minutes of stirring. He could feel his hair beginning to stick to his forehead from a mixture of nervous sweaty concentration and the steam from the potion itself.

Again, with the lack of timing himself properly, he just continued onto the next steps of the potion by sheer observation of what everyone else was doing. Using his already measured out armadillo bile, he added it into the mixture, stirring another five times counter-clockwise, yet uncertain about whether the stirring had to happen at the same time he added the bile or not. Two drops of leech juice went into the cauldron afterward, stirring hand not stopping as it continued on for another twenty counter-clockwise turns, awaiting that light brown in color or SOMETHING of that nature to take effect.

This was not light brown at all.

And what did it mean bring BACK to a boil? When was it not boiling??

Surprisingly, it hadn’t seemed quite as long as normal waiting for the potion to boil. Imagining her cat attacking the pixies was much too amusing for Brooklyn, and it seemed only moment s before she’d checked her cauldron again to notice that the contents were boiling. Time to move on, and therefore she took her wand out again and circled it counterclockwise over the potion. “Garrula lingua.” After the circle was complete, she returned her wand to pointing underneath the cauldron to lower the flame enough ht the potion would come to a simmer.

Reaching underneath her workstation again, she pulled out the activated charcoal, pre-measured at a tablespoon, and added it to her potion. Scourgifying her stirrer again, especially on the odd chance the earlier pixie chaos had contaminated it, she slipped it back into her cauldron and began stirring. Three times counterclockwise, and then she retrieved the bezoar and added a pinch to the potion. One more circle of her stirrer, and then she stopped to use her wand to extinguish the flame. Now all that remained was letting it sit and lighten in color.

Taking the time to label several vials, for her own purposes, she added the pertinent information to one. Her name, house and year, specifically, and by the time she’d finished, she checked on her potion again to find that it was decidedly fluorescent yellow. That was good, and she filled all of the vials she’d labeled carefully, taking care to make certain they were all securely sealed for the time being. She wasn’t necessarily planning on using her potion on anyone, herself included, but the extra vials would go with the vial of love potion she’d saved from a previous lesson. The other vial was brought up to Professor Newton’s desk, handed to the professor before she went back to clean up her workstation.

It was a little surreal...offering potions advice to someone. She could still remember the disaster that had been her and Eden in the potions laboratory when she was an underclassman and her moderate skill level she now possessed was only a recent development. And even so her skillset was quite questionable as she tended to be a walking accident waiting to happen. Nor was she skilled enough yet to be able to check on Lancelot while also working on her own potion...which was where her attention was entirely at this present moment.

Repeating the incantation under her breath a few more times, Paige twirled her wand between her fingers and took a loooooooooooooong breath. "Garrula lingua," she whispered with conviction, waving her wand counterclockwise over her cauldron and then lowering the heat once again. Cleaning her measuring spoon, Paige added the activated charcoal and got back to stirring...possibly also forgetting to breath between steps. Next came the pinch of bezoar and one last counterclockwise stir...and then off came the cauldron from the burner and out went the flame as well.

Peering into her cauldron, chewing on the inside of her cheek all the while, the seventh year waiting and watched for color changes.

There seemed to be a lot of stuff going on around the classroom, but Hattie was pretty concentrated on her potion, and her stirring, and she didn't really notice what was going on. She wanted to do really good in this potion, and she wasn't going to allow anything to distract her. So she just kept stirring her potion anti-clockwise whilst she waited for the 10 minutes to be over. Hopefully it would be over soon though because her arm was beginning to hurt.

ding ding ding. 10 minutes was over. Hattie knocked the timer off, and looked over at the instructions to see what she needed to do next. "Cool to room temp...." She murmured, as she pointed her wand at the flame, and turned it off, so that her potion could cool down. She made sure she used the thermometer, so that she would know when her potion was cool enough. She didn't want it to go too cold. She was proud of herself for remembering to bring the thermometer. That was clever of her.

A few minutes later, and her potion was a little cool. "Great" She murmured, looking over at her notes for the next instruction. Carefully she added the armadillo bile, and then stirred her potion carefully five times counter clock wise. Well that was good. It didn't hurt her arm so much. Next she added in the leech juice, and began to stir counter clockwise again. "20 times okay.."

One. Two. Three.

This could take a while.

It was strange to see Vlam leave with somebody else because Vlam was always with her, even during the lessons were Animal’s weren’t allowed! Even at those lessons she had smuggled her rat inside, deeply hidden in the pockets of her school uniform! But, it was good too to let Vlam go because he needed to play and she needed to finish her potion without being scared that her rat would fall into the cauldron.

Minutes later when the professor was back her face darkened, she had done something wrong, again! She always did SOMETHING wrong during this lesson, she wanted to do it good but up until today she still had not been able to finish a complete good potion. Sighing she nodded to the professor before speaking; ”I try finishing it and if it’s not working than I want to do it over, I’m not a Ravenclaw but I want to do it better than what I’m doing now” she spoke slowly while looking intently at her instructions, wondering where she had done something wrong and why she didn’t had realized it earlier.

Reading about the next thing to do she pulled her wand out of its holster before holding it above the cauldron, she made sure to make the right moving motion while speaking the spell out lout; ” garrula lingua.” Looking down at her still orange potion she waited for it to go back a simmer. “Hmm, that wasn’t that bad…” she muttered softly to herself, still wondering where she had done something wrong because she really had no idea! It was just frustrating the first year old because she WANTED to be good at this lesson! Bleh!

Looking at her notes again she followed the instructions and added one levelled tablespoon of activated charcoal to the potion while working very careful to at last not make another fault now that she knew that she already had done something wrong. But while the minutes passed the potion turned more and more orange and she became a little sad, she really had destroyed her potion! With a now disappointed look in her eyes she stirred her now worthless potion three times counter-clockwise, noticing that the potion still wasn’t coloring back to the right color.

With a sigh she added a pinch of a ground bezoar, looking hopefully that the color would change but nothing happened, it still looked more orange than brown and that was NOT what she wanted to see.

Default catch up! worked on the weekend!
lives in a hobbit hole || Ern and Touz's Nuzzle || roflysst || looking at a seed packet

Well Char DID talk a lot so she wouldn't mind being a test subject to see what might happen if you gave someone like her a babbling potion. She might've told the professor exactly that but she got distracted. She cleaned her cauldron and filled it with the 500 mls of water measured carefully, along with the ailhotsy leaves and then started looking around the room to see what everyone else was up to and if there was anything interesting (aka distracting) going on. And then she got distracted from her distractions because of PIXIES so naturally forgetting about the ailhotsy leaves doing their thing on the burner, Charlotte whipped her wand out and immobilized as many as she could! And THEN she couldn't find her notes about the potion.... and then she realised that she HADN'T ACTUALLY copied them down so there were no notes to find. The Gryffindor hurriedly copied them down (PROBABLY accurate?!) and then went ahead and gathered the rest of the ingredients listed.

Um.... had it been 20 minutes? Probably! She fished out the leaves with a spoon (mostly!) and tossed in two dried billywig stings and a generous pinch (what was a pinch anyways?) of erumpent tongue (gross), and then sort of daydreamed while stirring anti-clockwise at a mostly consistent rate. Mostly. HONESTLY she had more important things to think about than whether or not ten minutes had past, things filled her head up HEAPS at the moment actually. But it looked like maybe approximately about ten minutes according to the clock. Probably. She took it off the heat and waited for it to cool down.

Once it was room temperature (ish?) 5 mls of armadillo bile went in there and she stirred the contents 5 times anti-clockwise, followed by two drippy drops of leech juice and 20 more stirs the same way.

....

..... Well she SUPPOSED that was light brown? Maybe? ISh. Close enough anyways!

But GOSH this potion was taking a long time. It was so hard not to get bored and give up. Char yawned and stretched and tried to focus. Boiling. Again. She'd at least get to do a spell next! That made it a bit better. What was it? garrula lingua? And more of this anti-clockwise stuff too. Like undoing. Like undoing a tongue? Teehee. She moved her wand.

"Garrula lingua!" That part was the easiest and the best for sure. OH WAIT YEAH sIMMERING NOW. She turned the heat down and checked her instructions again. Measuring in (approximately) a tablespoon of (basically) leveled charcoal. Three Slooooooooooow anti-clockwise stirs. A pinch of ground bezoar. One little stir and... REMOVE. She took it from the heat again and watched.

..... brown.... brown..... mustard.... yellow.... FLURO! Heyyy the colour was right! Char gleefully went to pull her stirrer out of the cauldron and it made a gluggy sucking noise as it came out, the potion was the consistency of custard.

Erm.

Well, the colour was right? It should still be good, yeah? She went ahead and bottled it, noting that you couldn't tell it was gluggy once it was IN the vials. Sooo that was okay! She labeled one for the professor too.

And...... was she supposed to drink one? Or... you know, eat it?

Default A orange potion has been made!

Alright, almost done! She saw that she only needed to do a few more things before the potion would be finished officially so she started to work a little harder, wanted to be done with it because she already had lost her hope to make a perfect potion during this lesson. Looking one last time at her notes to make sure that she was doing the right thing she stirred the potion once counter clockwise, she grabbed the oven mitts she had taken with her because she already had burned her hands once because she stupidly hadn’t thought about how hot the cauldron would be and she removed it from the fire with her crocodiles oven mitts while sighing because the cauldron was heavy.

She put the oven mitts away and looked intently at the potion, hoping that it would turn the way it was supposed to but instead it turned now even more orange than it already was! Even a pumpkin wasn’t THAT orange as her potion! “STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!” He hissed to herself while making a ugly face. But, there was nothing she could do about it now, sadly… So she took a small ladle to fill the vials she already had prepared and filled them with her orange potion, wondering how it would taste and if it would do something to her. Shaking her head she took the labels and wrote her information on them;

Quote:
Leesha Griffel,
First year Slytherin
Putting all the labels on the vials she brought one of them to the professor and made a sad face. “It didn’t turned the way it was supposed to” said the first year with a sad voice, showing the orange vial. “Can I do it over another time? Professor?” She asked still sounding disappointed. Slowly she opened her own vial while still standing before the professor and drank it quick, not knowing if it would taste bad or not but nothing happened. She just stood before the professor and blinked one time with her eyes, a second time and even a third time before she realized that the potion wasn’t working. “Well… I at last tried it” spoke Leesha with hanging shoulders. “I start cleaning my workplace” she muttered while looking at Vlam who was playing with his new friend and decided to take her rat with her when she would leave the classroom, there was really no reason why she should take Vlam away already.

  • Add leech juice, stir twenty (20) times counter-clockwise, and the potion should be light brown in colour
  • Bring back to a boil
  • Circle wand counter-clockwise over cauldron whilst saying the incantation ‘garrula lingua’ and bring down to a simmer
  • Add 1 levelled tablespoon of activated charcoal
  • Stir counter-clockwise three (3) times slowly
  • Add a pinch of ground bezoar
  • Stir once counter clockwise and remove from heat

Fluttery Pegasi

The sand finally ran out and Hadley put down the stirrer. She smiled. The potion was going great! All the studying and tutoring was starting to pay off and this potion was gonna prove it! She just needed to keep going as she had...

What was that?

Hadley whipped her head around in time to see a pixie buzz past her. What were pixies doing here!? She watched them as they flew around disrupting other student's ingredients and tugging on hair, and...well, just basically being pixies. And then they came for her.

Nononononono! Not happening. Hadley pulled out her wand, trying to immobilize any that came near her potion or potion ingredients, failing more than she succeeded. Others were fighting them off too, even Professor Newton. Most were now immobilized. The rest were about to leave. It was over.

Hadley relaxed, a bit too soon. The remaining pixies were dropping other ingredients into cauldrons on their way out. Nononononono...PLUNK!

Honestly.
Well, Owen seemed to be more fortunate than the fellow Hufflepuff who knocked over his cauldron. He managed to got out clean and free of injuries, while she probably had hurting knees and who knew what else. And now she was helping him clean up the mess of what used to be the base of his brew. "Nah, it's okay. I'm alright. But your knees..." He mumbled off. He was going his company to their School Healer but she was claiming to Professor Newton that it was just a bruise. Maybe she didn't want anyone fussing over her right now. Owen made it a mental note to approach her after class and force suggest that she visit the hospital wing.

For now, the 4th year Hufflepuff focused back on finishing up his potion. He made another silent run-through through the recipe and began brewing.

After measuring the amount of water, Owen poured it into the cauldron and incendio'd it to a light simmer. The alihotsy leaves followed shortly.

This was kind of the part he was doing when the pixies arrived. Owen hoped and prayed and hoped that they were not coming back again to make a chaos of his potion or he was really going to get mad...truly.

As he waited, he prepared everything else and made sure all the ingredients were of the necessary amount so mixing them all in later would be a breeze.

About twenty minutes after, he leaned over his cauldron and strained the all bits and pieces and remains of the alihotsy leaves.

Back to boiling!

Billywig stings and erumpent tongue in, Owen grabbed the ladle and began what sounded like a very exhausting ten-minute counterclockwise stirring. Five minutes into that task, he just HAD TO transfer the ladle to his other hand. Man, that was really tiring.

He was able to rest his now starting to sore arm muscles - yes, he had some - as he allowed the brew to cool, every now and then dipping the thermometer into it until it reached the desired temperature. Armadillo bile added in, Owen stirred it again five times counterclockwise. Next he added in the leech juice. So. Much. Stirring. By now, Owen's potion was light brown in color. As it should be. The badger stepped back for a bit, grinning. He was already halfway through.

Back to boiling again!

She nodded and smiled when the professor said she could save some the way it's normally done to have the experiment. Very well. She looked back at her instruction. Her nose crinkled reading leech juice. Even the name sounded gross. Picking it up she dumped the right amount in. Setting down the vial she grabbed a the clean stirrer and started. 1...2...3...4...5 counterclockwise. 6..7..8..9..10.. Why did they have to stir so much.

11..12...13...15...16..finally almost done. 17...18...19..and 20. Wow that was lots of stirring, though not really. Using her wand she brought it back to a boil. Seeing that it was the right color and watching it start to bubble up Natalia looked back at the steps.

Holding up her wand Natalia moved it counter clockwise over the cauldron, "garrula lingua" then flicked her wand to lesson the flames so the potion would lower to a simmer.

andd twenty.

Oh wow. That had been effort. She really did need to learn how to get her stirrer to stir all on it's own. Harriet made a mental note to look at that after she finished class. She looked over the potion. It was a brown colour. Not overly light. But it looked okay. She was happy with it. She glanced back at her notes to look over the next lot of instruction.

She put the heat back onto her potion, and waited for it to boil again. Allt his changing temperatures was pretty complicated. Next she carefully moved her wand counter clockwise over the potion whilst saying "‘garrula lingua’" She then turned the heat back down, so that the potion began to simmer. It looked okay. She didn't think it was perfect. But she was 12. It was okay to not be perfect at some things.

Picking up her tablespoon, she carefully added one levelled spoon of the activated charcoal into her potion. She wanted to be careful that she didn't add too much or not enough. She wanted to be as perfect as she could! Slowly, she stirred her potion three times counter clockwise. At least it was only 3 times this time! That was much easier to manage, and easier on her arm too.

She carefully added a pinch of the bezoar and and stirred the potion once more counter clockwise. And then she turned the heat off. She was nearly done yay. She sat on her chair, peering into the cauldron as she watched it cool down. She smiled as she watched her potion go from the earthy brown color to the bright yellow. It wasn't exactly fluorescent but it was okay. "Oh wow... very hufflepuff..." She giggled with a smile.

After the potion had stopped changing colour, she carefully put one serving into a vial, and labelled it up. All done, and she was proud of herself. She was finally getting better at this.
