| | Potions Final: Third - Fourth Years It was 10:45, and Art was preparing for the following group to sit their final. Clearing up the desks, putting new ingredients and cards down etc. He opened the door and left it wide open, for the students who were about to take their final.
On each desk area is a Potions Card, which is flipped upside down. So no peeking! Up the front is an assortment of different ingredients. Even ingredients that aren’t even IN the potion you will be brewing. So… unfortunately, if you’ve not been studying your textbooks, you might pick up the wrong ingredient.
Art has expected you to bring your potion equipment, but if you haven’t, or if you’ve melted your cauldron during your study, there are some spares in the equipment cupboard. There’s no need to have your textbook, but there is a spare piece of parchment in front of each desk if you need to jot down notes to help.
As you walk into the classroom, Art is nodding and saying good morning to you all. ++++++++++++
As the clock ticked 11:00, Art closed the door and turned to all of the third and fourth year students. "Alright everyone, you may turn over your Potion Cards and get started. You have 90 minutes." And with that, Art clicked the timer on his desk which would alert the students to how much time they had to complete their potion, and sat behind his desk. |

| Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite With the Potions Final set for 11 am, Blaise had been dropped off at the castle by 10:30. It gave him just enough time to get a final look over in the event his brain needed a refresher, but hardly enough time to go find his friends before they all had to head inside to get started.
The boy's only solace was that it would be summer soon, then all his friends would be home like he had been for well over a month and a half and he'd be able to see them more. As it stood, this Final ended in an hour and a half, then his parents would be right there to take him home again. This was how all his finals were going to go apparently and he didn't think he minded much. Being away from the castle did the now 14 year old a lot of good and walking through the corridor to the Potions Lab, he found he hadn't really missed this place; not at all. In fact, he almost shuddered at all the sights. Kid was already ready to leave; he couldn't wait to get home and head to Diagon Alley with his Mum.
Blaise entered the room just five minutes before the exam was to start, with just enough time to get himself settled, smile at his friends then get himself focused again.
He'd studied all night and the day before that. The boy had even gotten his little sister to help him practise and go through ingredients so this would be a piece of cake.
First things first, the ingredients. Blaise glanced up at the desk full of odds and ends then back to his little card. This wouldn't be too difficult, not the way he saw it. Maybe he'd even get done early enough to leave and go looking for Katherine before her final. It was the boyfriendly thing to do afterall.
Um. But right. Final. Focus Bellaire. Blaise left his spot by his cauldron and went to the front with the others to get what he needed. He saw that one kid grab something that wasn't on the list but he didn't suppose that was any of his business so he kept his eyes on the ingredients he was sure HE needed then went back to his seat. (It was a lot of stuff by the way, three trips were needed)
Now stationed by his cauldron again, the boy threw all his equipment inside it then went to the sink to get everything washed and dried as best he could. Good thing he'd already pre-cleaned everything on the way here, yup. Everything was placed back at his desk before he returned to the sink to fill it with three litres of water.
With that done, he headed back to his spot and placed the cauldron above it's burner. This being his Final, Blaise didn't suspect the Professor would appreciate his usual method of lighting it on fire so with a bit of reluctance, the boy drew his wand and cast a simple incendio. His first and last stint of magic, hopefully.
He wouldn't be wasting any time while he waited for the water to begin boiling. Blaise reached for his mortar and poured a cup (half the two cups, yes) of horklump juice into it. Following this, the mucus, slime and fangs were added. With everything together, he began crushing the fangs within the entire mixture. He was sure to get it as properly grounded as he could but the boy didn't stop until his mixture became a bright purple sort of goo. This....this was a good thing.
While he worked, the water worked too. First, just little bubbles popping up to the surface every now and then but soon the bubbles got bigger and more erratic in movement, a sure sign it had been brought to boil. Excellent!
Blaise waited a little longer, just to be sure it had been fully brought to boil then added his purple goo and the rest of the horklump juice.

| Post 1 ♥s her SS family l Wifey is MINE | Naughty Niffler l Whittysaur l #awkwardturtle<# Finals were never something that Esme ENJOYED - since they were basically tests - but Potions wouldn't be too bad. Hopefully. This was one of the best classes and Professor Newton was the best teacher along with Professor Myers. Added to the fact that she had made sure that she was completely prepared down to having all her ingredients well stocked and her equipment cleaned. Go her! "Morning, Professor!" she said with a smile as she walked into the room and spotted Grandpa Professor Newton. Her game face was on and she was ready to kick this final's butt. First of all, however, she waited for the go ahead so that she could turn her potions card over. Oh, they were going to be working on the Wiggenweld Potion. That was a funny name but she could definitely see why someone might need to use it. Her mind was brought to Sleeping Beauty but she wasn't sure if it was a potion that had caused her to sleep or not; just because people called something a 'curse' didn't mean that it actually WAS. Deciding that it was best not to ask the Professor if he knew, she instead focused on getting ready to brew her potion because that was a lot more important at the moment.
Even though her work area looked clean, Esme gave it a good Scourgifying because that was important. ALWAYS important. Goodness knows her mother and the Potions Professors had beaten that into her skull more than enough. She used the spell TWICE on her cauldron to be extra thorough and gave her equipment another going over as well because why not. There. Everything was spotless.
With a satisfied smile she donned the required gear and then looked down at her card so that she could see where to start. Her guess was water because potions liked to start with water.
Yep, she needed to boil some. |

| Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite Mint mint mint, where did he put the mint he'd collected from the table? Blaise took a step back to survey his brewing area. It wasn't to say he'd let it turn into a disorganized mess but with all these ingredients, it was just a little hard to immediately pick out the ones he needed. Add to that the fact that he was looking for a sprig of mint. Not the whole plant, just a spri--oh there it was!
Blaise nicked it from the table and ripped it in half as the card had said. With that done, he tossed both halves into the cauldron and watched it disappear into the solution.
Just as he was about to grab the mandrake, a piece of the instructions caught his attention. Gloved? Oh right, right, gear for the brewing. He'd already put on the coat and goggles but he'd completely forgotten about the gloves on his way to get everything washed earlier. Merlin it was a good thing he'd caught that! The boy pulled on his gloves then took hold of the mandrake. Don't ask him why it needed to be gloved, kid just did what the card said. He would prove to his parents that he could excel without having to STAY in the castle.
Who knew, maybe if he got good enough marks they'd let him stay home more often and turn up exclusively for Finals. It was a stretch but something had to give.
Okay, 7 drops of honey water. One...two...three...four...five...six...seven! Blaise placed the mandrake on a container then got it into quarters, carefully cutting at it with his instrument, tongue stuck out in concentration. The quarters had to be perfect--as perfect as he could get them at any rate. Satisfied with his handiwork, the boy added these to the cauldron before measuring out a cup of sloth brain mucus.
At the one cup mark, he stopped and added it to the cauldron as well.
The Gryffindor glanced back to the card, double checking his next step. His determination would not allow him to make even the smallest mistake. He would have to add the 2 moondew drops. That was easy enough. He didn't dare breathe as he added the drops to the cauldron, just so he wouldn't accidentally drop too many. Then it was time to stir.
First, one counter clockwise. Stir. Then the other clockwise. Stir. Theeeeere, just like the instructions said.
Blaise reached for the powdered root of asphodel that was set just a little ways off from where the mint had been. A sprinkle? Just a sprinkle? He could do that. The boy took a pinch between his fingers then carefully moved his hand over his cauldron and sprinkled it in.
Next!

| Post 2 ♥s her SS family l Wifey is MINE | Naughty Niffler l Whittysaur l #awkwardturtle<# Pointing her wand inside one of her measuring cups, Esme said, "Aguamenti," and watched as water sprouted out of it. Once she had accumulated three Litres, she ended the spell with a, "Finite." Into the cauldron it went.
After turning on the burner so that the water could start to boil she set about collecting all of the ingredients that she needed so that she could continue. A watched pot never boils... or so they say. Hopefully being busy with other things would make the time pass faster because she wanted to get on with this potion. Nerves weren't an issue really it was more that she wanted to see if she could pull off what Professor Newton was asking for them to do. The more she studied Potions, the more Esme felt confident in her abilities when it came to the subject - not that she understood the finer points of the science or anything.
The next thing that needed to be done was measuring out some horklump juice and adding half of it to the mortar. Right.
Esme poured two cups of the juice into a measuring cup and then proceeded to pour half of that into her mortar. Following that was two drops of flobberworm mucus (eww), seven chizpurfle fangs, and a Tablespoon of billywig sting slime (more ewww). Lovely... Shrugging, she used the pestle to begin crush crush cruuuuuushing the fangs up until she was left with a bunch of bright purple goo. The colour was rather pretty despite the fact that the mixture was made up of mucus and slime among other things.
By now the water was boiling, so into the cauldron went said goo as well as the other cup of horklump juice. The sprig of mint was ripped in half and that was added as well.
Okay, what next? |

| Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite Blaise was all set to add the next ingredients, the shredded dittany, when yet another set of instructions caught his attention. Once he was done adding this, he was going to need to almost immediately add the wiggentree bark. He was going to need to be ready. Consequently, Blaise reached for both ingredients, pulling them closer to him and the cauldron.
Almost immediately. Fast reflexes, he didn't have a second to waste. The Gryffindor took hold of the 2 cups of shredded dittany and carefully poured them into the solution he'd thus far concocted then as quickly as he could without knocking everything over (which...meant not going NEARLY as fast as he otherwise might have) the boy added the two inch wiggentree bark.
That.......was immediate enough. Nothing was suddenly hissing or spitting and the cauldron wasn't acting grumpy out of nowhere. Blaise paused a moment, watching to be sure nothing had gone wrong and he hadn't taken too long because then he'd have to start over--if possible and starting over would mean he definitely wouldn't finish early enough to see Katherine before his parents came back to get him. That would've been the height of disappointment--y'know, next to actually having to continue coming back when he wanted nothing more than to never see this place again.
So far so good.
The 14 year old reached next for the moly petals. Floating them shouldn't have been hard. They were light enough that all he had to do was sprinkle them in and watch them settle themselves snuggly on the surface.
Blaise let the petals fall through his fingers, having already counted out seven to ensure he didn't add too many. As the last took its place in the potion he looked to the card again. By the looks of it, he was almost done. More than half the things were added and he still had a good bit of time left!
Let's see...next was...the....oh! The salamander blood. Right. You think he'd remember picking up a cup of blood earlier but apparently not? According to this, it needed to be slooooowly added. Setting his hand at a good distance from the cauldron, the boy tipped the measuring cup slightly and watched the crimson liquid flowing out. Took him all of a couple seconds to decide this would take forever and left him wondering why he couldn't simply pour it i and be done with it. He wouldn't go trying it because....grade and all but make no mistake, he WAS wondering now.
After forever and ever and ever of pouring, the last of the liquid had finally been added and he could now lower the cup.
With that done he was on to the crushing bit. Blaise grabbed the lionfish spine and added it to the mortar. Roughly crushing...he suspected meant he wouldn't have to get it all tiny and well crushed and so with that in mind, the boy got to work with the pestle. It wouldn't take much time, in fact, it was hardly any time at all before it was crushed to his satisfaction and also added to the cauldron.
This was going smoothly if he did say so himself
Next thing that needed getting in was the unicorn horn--which he used to have questions about before he learned that they didn't take them from LIVE unicorns. It was okay for use. None harmed in the making of this Potions Final.
Blaise held the horn over the cauldron and began the grating process. For as much as he could help it, he tried to make sure nothing fell outside the cauldron. To ensure that, he held his hand as close to it as he dared. Caution was still important. The potion might suddenly decide to bubble up and where would that leave his poor hand?
Fortunately the potion DID behave and he was able to get the entire horn grated and into the cauldron. Good stuff.

| Post 3 ♥s her SS family l Wifey is MINE | Naughty Niffler l Whittysaur l #awkwardturtle<# Glancing at her recipe card, Esme saw that the next thing that she needed to do involved the mandrake and some honeywater.
After cleaning the dropper using Scourgify, she picked up the mandrake in her gloved hand (Wouldn't people ALREADY be wearing their gloves? Maybe there really were people who didn't know better...) and collected some of the honeywater into her dropper. One... two... three... four... five... six... seven... drops were added to the mandrake so that it was covered and then Esme carefully quartered it with her clean knife. Into the cauldron it went and then it was on to adding some sloth brain mucus. Yummy... Esme made a face but moved on to cleaning her measuring cup. One cup of sloth brain mucus was measured out and that was poured into the cauldron.
After cleaning her dropper once more, it was used to add two drops of moondew. Picking up her metal stirrer, she stirred the potion once counter-clockwise and then once clockwise. A pinch of the powdered root of asphodel followed and then Esme cleaned her measuring cup before measuring out and adding two cups of the shredded dittany.
The two inches of Wiggentree bark was carefully plopped in almost immediately afterwards and the seven Moly petals were then added to float on the surface of the potion. |

| Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite By now the contents of his table had diminished noticeably. So much so that he could already make a fair guess as to what the next bit of the potion would need. No room for mistakes though, so the boy still took a glance down at his potions card to confirm his suspicions.
Wolfsbane was next on the agenda.
Blaise picked up the wolfsbane roots that had already been roughly diced and added them to the cauldron before reaching for the wooden spoon. According to this, he'd need to stir it twenty times...counter clockwise? Was that what he read? Twenty was an awful lot to get wrong so he did a double take at the card before sticking the spoon into it and starting the stirring process.
Once, twice, thrice; the boy counted out the twenty stirs. With the solution settling again, Blaise leaned against his stool to watch. It had to simmer for a while. He wasn't sure just how long so the boy let it sit over the fire for a bit. When it began showing little signs that it might start bubbling again in a bit, he took that as his cue to put the flame out from under his cauldron.
And now for the finishing touch, the boom berry juice. It was already room temperature and didn't saw HOW he was meant to add it so Blaise took that as the go ahead to simply pour it in.
With that done, it actually looked like he was done the entire potion! Yes! Yeeessss! one more final down, one step closer to full on summer break...though he was technically now on break being home all the time but y'know, it wasn't REAL summer yet.

Well, there were still eight steps to go but that didn't matter. Esme was having fun brewing her potion - some gross ingredients aside - but finals were not nice and she wanted to see if she had done everything correctly or not. Hopefully it wouldn't take too long for Professor Newton to get the results in though of course she was patient. The man had a lot to do after all. Besides he was like her grandpa and she wouldn't rush anyone like that because it would be rude.
Slooooooooooowly she poured out the cup of salamander blood - the measuring cup was clean - into the cauldron. Honestly she had no idea if this was the right speed to go with or not but it seemed pretty darn slow to her and so long as the potion didn't start acting weird things should be in order.
When that was done Esme roughly crushed the ten lionfish spines and added them as well. Now on to grating the horn of the most magnificent creature that had ever graced the planet. It was a good thing that no unicorns had been hurt in the process because she would have been mighty ticked off otherwise and refused to continue. As it was, she graaaaated away at the thing until it was all added to her cauldron.
Cleaning her knife, Esme then proceeded to roughly dice the two wolfsbane roots before gently plopping them into the potion. One... two... three... four... five... six... seven... eight... nine... ten... eleven... twelve... thirteen... fourteen... fifteen... sixteen... seventeen... eighteen... nineteen... twenty... counter-clockwise stirs with her clean metal stirrer and then it was time for her to let the potion simmer.
Okay then.
Exactly how long was she supposed to wait??? Not really sure, Esme decided to let it sit until she felt that the correct time had come for the burner to be turned off. Carefully she watched the bubbles and when they became more active she extinguished the fire. Cleaning her measuring cup, she added a cup of room temperature boom berry juice and that was her done.
Pouring some of the potion into a vial, she put on a label that she had written her information down on: Quote: Esme Darcy
Hufflepuff
Fourth Year After handing her work into Professor Newton she set about cleaning up her work area. |

Olly was not feeling to confident about his ability to pass this Potions final. But he was going to try his best and hopefully not disappoint either of his dads by completely failing. He didn't have to be perfect or anything, but he wanted to be able to at least pass. He studied his potion card and went to the front of the room to gather his ingredients first. Most of them were fairly straightforward and he selected them with ease, but a few were less easily recognizable. A few he lifted up and sniffed before making a selection. But eventually he made it back to his seat with what he hoped were the right ingredients.
First things first, clean the equipment of course. He cast a quick scourgify over his cauldron, measuring equipment, and stirring spoons. When he was satisfied he'd gotten everything cleaned it was time to start brewing. All he needed to do was bring some water to boil, which was simple enough. He measured out three litres and filled his cauldron. Then he cast incendio to start the fire under his cauldron. While that was boiling he could prepare the next ingredients.
2 cups of horklump juice. He was pretty sure that ingredient was the right one. He'd worked with it before and was pretty confident he'd been able to properly recognize it. That was ready in his measuring cup for when the water was boiling. Most of the rest of the ingredients did not need much preparation, which saved him some time. He scanned down the list until he got to wolfsbane. It needed to be roughly diced, which was something he could do while he waited. Olly used his clean knife to dice it. It was nice that it said roughly diced, so he didn't have to be too careful.
Then it was time for Olly to pour one cup of the horklump juice into his mortar. To that he added the mucus, seven fangs, and slime. The fangs and slime he was pretty confident about, but the mucus was less certain. He'd chosen what he thought most looked like mucus and hoped it was correct. That one he hadn't used or studied as much. With those four ingredients in the mortar he crushed them until it was really gooey, and also had turned purple. By that time the water was boiling so he dumped the goo into his cauldron. Also the rest of the horklump juice. Why hadn't that also gone into the goo? It just needed to be added separately which Olly didn't really understand but obviously there had to be a good reason.
Rip the sprig of mint in half? That was weird. Why would it make a difference if it was two half sprigs or just a full sprig? Wasn't it exactly the same thing. But Olly didn't argue with instructions. He simply ripped his sprig of mine in half and added both halves to the cauldron. It certainly made it smell better. Did it serve any other purpose?
The next step required him to wear gloves, which he scourgified before putting on. He held the stewed mandrake in one hand while he used to other to drop seven drops of honeywater on top of it. When that was done he cut the mandrake in four fairly equal pieces and added them all to the cauldron. Alright, that had been easy enough and he felt confident about both of those ingredients. The next one he was less certain about. He'd chosen two ingredients that looked mucus-y, but he really had no idea which was the flobberworm mucus and which was the sloth mucus. He decided at random so he had a 50-50 shot of getting it right. As he added a cup of what he hoped was the sloth brain mucus he hoped nothing too horrible would happen if he had, in fact, mixed them up. Because that was very likely.
There was not a lot of pausing while making this potion. He just added ingredient after ingredient without stopping to stir or let it brew or heat up or cool off or whatever. At least it kept him busy. Olly dropped in two moondew drops then stirred twice. First counterclockwise and then clockwise. That was it, then it was time to move on to the next ingredient. |
