And once again, you enter the dank, dark cave that is the Hogwarts potions classroom... but something has changed. Unlike the environment of the previous class, which was characterized by a clash of noxious odors, this time the classroom is filled with...
THE BEST. SMELLS. EVER.
Though the room is still cast in the typical gloom from the flickering candle wall sconces, unlike during the last class this time the air smells sweet, with notes of chocolate, vanilla, fresh coffee, light florals and fresh breezes, newly cut grass... A thousand lovely scents all harmoniously combining to create a symphony of sweet smells. Small flames are burning under a series of cauldrons simmering at the back of the room, and there are the typical rows of workstations with two stools at each station.
A thousand and three jars, canisters, and containers of potions ingredients line the shelves along the walls, gleaming dully in the low light. Each is labelled in the Professor's shaky old man's script, and at the back of the room are shelves groaning under the weight of huge potions encyclopedias and texts.
At the front of the classroom, a large charmed chalkboard stands. On it are written these simple instructions:
Quote:
POTIONS CLASS: LOVE POTIONS
Please be seated. The professor will be here momentarily. Be certain that you have all your potions equipment with you; failure to do so may cost your House points. If you are an older student who is familiar with Potions you may set up your workstation. I expect my younger students are now able to set up their workstations as well; if you need help, please ask an older student.
You may talk quietly amongst yourselves, but please keep the conversation to a reasonable level out of respect for your classmates. Thank you.
--Professor Kazimeriz
Class Synopsis:
The class began with a discussion on Love Potions- the theory behind them and their classification.
Then, the students discussed probable ingredients in love potions based on their knowledge of potion ingredients; this lead to the lab assignment, in which the students were to partner with a person of the opposite gender and brew a basic Class XX love potion.
The students received instruction on how to remove infused oils from their pre-treated lovage seeds, and were instructed to work in pairs to complete this task.
Next, the students were instructed to add a single drop of swan blood to the potion, bottled a draught, and sample each other's work. Ah... Love!

Apple cider, 8 ounces
Lionfish heart, minced
Griffin dandruff, 1 dram
Warm water until just before boiling.
Crush fluxweed with mortar and pestle, add to water. Allow to come to a brisk boil.
Add lovage pollen, stir until dissolved.
Potion should take on a light golden colour.
Stir slowly, alternating clockwise and counterclockwise stirs
bring potion back up to a boil and allow to simmer 5 minutes
Add inner membrane ONLY of bloodroots; do NOT include the tough outer membrane of the root!!!
Add apple cider and lionfish heart; potion should take on an iridescent sheen and a light pink to purple cast
Add griffin dandruff and simmer until your potion takes on a deep pink to red sheen.
DO NOT GO FORWARD, wait for further instructions.
LouAnn glanced back and forth between Cope and the mixture they'd created. She was waiting on it to turn that light golden color the directions mentioned. "Archaeology, that sounds like an interesting job," she commented, her eyes still on the mixture. If it didn't turn light gold soon, did that mean they'd done something wrong? Cope was her partner, though...of course it would turn a light golden color!
...and a few seconds later, it did! Or so she thought it did. She stepped back a bit and pointed towards the cauldron. "Cope, I think we did it," she said, hoping he'd notice the color change, as well. He had the stirring rod, she thought, so he'd have to be the one to get the stirring going. After that, they'd have to wait a whole five minutes before moving on again. "Sooo, you're probably the expert here. What's next?" she asked, blushing a little once again.
Copernicus turned up the heat again to let the potion resume boiling before backing it off slightly. Now they just had to simmer for five minutes, which gave them plenty of time to prepare the next step.
"Why don't you mince the lionfish heart while I scrape out the bloodroot lining?" Copernicus suggested. He set the apple cider aside, since it didn't require preparation, only measurement. "Wonder why we need the lovage seeds AND pollen when we only used the pollen," he mused aloud before shoving the seeds off to the side.

I always feel weird things in this class and they all turn out to be right.'' now it was time to pour out all his suspicions though it looked like an inappropriate one because they were in the middle of a potions class and were busy with brewing a love potion which required utmost attention. He watched her as she added the crushed fluxweed into the cauldron. The greenish substance scattered around once it was in the water and vanished among the bubbles as the water started to boil. Blinking into their work Josh responded ''Yea, i think i can handle the bloodroot job. Got a silver knife here'' he indicated the tool on the table ''Because us guys are always the experiment; of course, i know, i would not want any girl to suffer if the potions turn outs to be wrongly brewed, either. But the idea of love potions around... they are the most dangerous thing... anyway'' then grabbed the lovage pollen and lovage seeds next to it. He knew it was the turn for the lovage pollen but...he second checked the instructions ''There is written nothing about the lovage seeds. Do you think we should add them together with the pollen?''
"Hmmm..." Reading through the instructions about three more times, she looked down at the lovage seeds and then the cauldron. "I don't know. It doesn't say to add them though." Frowning, she read the instructions one more time before shaking her head. "No, don't add them. Just add the pollen, it's boiling now. Then I'll stir."
She knew that Josh was probably right on the fact that the professor might make them try the love potion, but she also had doubts. Who knows? Maybe the Professor was just trying to scare them or something... "Lets not worry about that now. If he does make anyone of us try it, than we probably want the potion to turn out right instead of poisoning us or something. Don't want to end up like last potions class."

Marie? Alright. He opened his mouth to introduce himself, but then frowned. She knew his name. How though? He didn't remember her... he didn't play quidditch... must be from a class or something. Or maybe he was so handsome that all the Slytherin house knew his name. Oooh."Evan Cartwright." he said nevertheless, just in case. "Oh yeah." he said as he smiled. He went over to light a fire and placed the cauldron filled with water onto it. He wondered if he'd fall in love with her even for an hour. Glancing at the sihfty looking professor, he guessed he would. He wondered how Fallon would react to that. Of course she wouldn't know. Or maybe she would, Evan'd revenge Nate issue. Her intention was to be friends, and so was Evan's. Evan fought back a smirk and waited for the water to be inches away from boiling. Hopefully, Marie'd get his message and crush the fluxweed.
"Nice to meet you officially Evan. We've worked together before but only in a group." Marie was not really sure if he remembered that they had worked together in another class but she had a feeling he would remember this time.
She crushed the fluxweed while Evan put the water on to boil. 'How is this going to make me fall in love with him?' seh wondered. Sure, he was cute but gee, she was only 11 and not ready for love yet.
'Why don't you just tell me when and I'll scrape them into your cauldron for you?' Jack offered, as he was making sure that he'd minced the heart correctly.
um alright.i guess we can add the roots now she said consulting the notes again to see if they were doing right.

At the mention of their first meeting, Evan took a really good look at her, and for the first time realised the beauty. How come he had missed her before? Must be around Lyra or Fallon. Not that they were more beautiful, just he liked them more. And he remembered the incident: Divination class, his vomit. He grinned and nodded as if agreeing it was nice to meet her too. He then checked the cauldron, seeing that it was ready to add the fluxweed. He then looked at Marie to see if she was finished too. Seriously, where were Fallon and Lyra?

Seeing that the cauldron was ready, Marie added the crushed fluxweed. "I guess we just wait now until it boils then we can add the lovage."
Maire noticed that Evan seemed to be pre-occupied with something as if he was deep in thought. Then again maybe he was just shy and didn't really know what to say. Marie was feeling a little shy herself at the moment. The last time she had an encounter with another boy she ended up pushing him in mooncalf dung. A evil little grin crossed her face as she remembered the little huffie boy laying there with his face in the ground as she accidentaly dropped dung on his back.

Evan nodded again as he didn't see any need to speak. He usually found a little need to speak. He hoped he could come up with a topic to talk about. Of course, he had to remember they were actually in a class. Maybe after class? It seemed as if this potion's effects would last a day, the professors would enjoy it. Come to think about it, he'd be just equally evil. Because what was school for?
When the water gave huge bubbles of boiling, he added the lovage pollens. He stirred as directed, and waited for it to turn colour. How long will it take?
um alright.i guess we can add the roots now she said consulting the notes again to see if they were doing right.
she waited for Jack to add the roots into the potion
Jack picked up the cutting board and positioned it over the cauldron. He very carefully scraped every last bit of the roots in, slowly, so there was no splashback.
'Okay, now just let me know when you need the heart.' he said.
Jack was starting to get a bit nervous. Naturally, he wanted to brew a perfect potion, but if they had to test it....
Isabella nodded and then after the roots were added she took the 8 ounces of measured apple cider in a vial and gently added it in the potion and mentally keeping her fingers crossed.she waited for any change in the potion and she did find a bit of a change in the yellow color.it had began to lighten.her heart gave a sudden nervous thump.turning to Jack she said um...we can add the minced heart now.we will have to wait for it to turn into iridescent sheen light pink or cast pruple
she instantly got busy with measuring with one dram of griffin dandruff on her scales

'Alrighty!' Jack picked up the cutting board again and with his lovely silver knife, slowly scraped every last bit of the heart into the cauldon. It probably didn't matter that much, as the hearts weren't all exactly the same size, but he did like to be precise.
While he was waiting, he updated his notes a bit. They were almost done...
Warm water until just before boiling....check (Isabella)
Crush fluxweed with mortar and pestle, add to water. Allow to come to a brisk boil.....check (Isabella)
Add lovage pollen, stir until dissolved....check (Isabella)
Potion should take on a light golden colour....
Stir slowly, alternating clockwise and counterclockwise stirs
bring potion back up to a boil and allow to simmer 5 minutes
Add inner membrane ONLY of bloodroots; do NOT include the tough outer membrane of the root!!! DONE
Add apple cider and lionfish heart; potion should take on an iridescent sheen and a light pink to purple cast DONE
Add griffin dandruff and simmer until your potion takes on a deep pink to red sheen.
Kay was busy work on her potion and didn't care anymore about someone to work with. She measured out 1 dram of griffin dandruff and add it to her potions. That was the last step and all she had to do how was wait of it to change color again. To a nice deep pink or red sheen. Kay hope it would be red, she hate pink. Kay looked around to see if the Professor was going to tell them what to do next.

LouAnn was glad Cope was sort of taking control of this brewing. She was more than just a little happy to be the follower and not the leader. It made her more confident in thinking the end result would be success. "Mmhmm, sure. I can do that. Lionfish heart...lionfish heart," she mumbled, searching the work area for that particular ingredient. "Ahh, right here!" She carefully collected the heart and got started cutting it as small as she possibly could.
"I don't know," she finally replied, "but I was actually just wondering about the lovage pollen and seeds myself. I guess we're probably using it later. Maybe since it helps create confusion, we need the pollen for the first stage then the seeds to stir in during the final stages."

Bella was done with measuring of the 1 dram of griffin dandruff which was all powdery and soft.she peeped into their cauldron and had a smile creeping across her face.the potion had a light pink in color though there was little sheen that appeared.
she took out the 1 dram of the dandruff and poured it into her potion.she bent down and reduced the flame just to allow the potion to simmer.as she began to clear the extra dandruff that had fallen down on her workstation and then she sneezed.once, twice, thrice and she heavily sat down stupid dandruff she said softly.

Carefully, Copernicus extracted the delicate inner membrane of the bloodroot, ignoring poor LouAnn as he did so. It wasn't her fault; he just required complete concentration for the task. He finally pulled the last of the membrane free right at the five minute mark.
He dropped the three fibrous pieces into the cauldron before adding the apple cider. "Go ahead and add the lionfish heart, and we'll be able to see how we're doing when it changes color." That was his favorite bit about potions... you could tell at any stage if you were going wrong based on the color.

Cope had grown quiet as he worked, something LouAnn picked up on right away and made a mental note of. It probably helped with concentration, which was an aspect of brewing she needed to work on. Getting distracted while measuring and cutting probably wasn't the best idea in the whole world.
LouAnn's eyes fell on the mixture as Cope added pieces of the membrane and the apple cider to the mixture. It was then her turn to add the lionfish heart, so she carefully lifted the minced pieces and lowered them into the cauldron. "Hmm...an iridescent sheen and a light pink to purple cast," she mumbled. "...just one more step after this one."

Jack watched as their potion progress. It was doing JUST as it should...light pink...a bit dark...coming up to a nice shade of fushia.
Jack beamed at Isabella. 'Well done!' He really was pleased. If she had been a he, a high five would have been in order. He was beginning to think of her as a little sister and had an urge to give her a hug...but considering what was brewing, he thought that ill advised.

He was lucky to have her as a partner other than the love potion issue, she was the top student of the Slytherin house so their potion was going to be perfect. He could relieve, he was working with Rose, the most beautiful and smart girl in Hogwarts, so he was safe. ''Actually i would prefer to be poisoned if i were not working with you'' he whispered leaning towards her a little and as he did so his eyes spotted Evan at the opposite table who was working with another Slytherin.

Reese looked back towards Torin. "I'm sorry," she said. "Now, I think you've crushed enough fluxweed. We only need two bunches." She grabbed the two bunches of fluxweed with mortar and the pestle and added it to the water that was near boiling. "Okay, so..." Picking up her pen, she scratched off the steps her and Torin have already done.
As she waited for the water to boil, Reese sat there and measured out 2 drams of the lovage pollen. He watched as she started adding to the potion while talking. Hopefully he would be able to do some stuff for this thing. Or something. But it was okay just sitting here too, it gave him a chance to zone out.
He was daydreaming about Quidditch when she told him something about bloodroots. He immediately snapped out of it. "Wait, what?" He looked at her, confused. And then she handed him a piece of paper.
Looking it over, he saw that he had to add the bloodroot in 5 minutes. Or a little less time than that by now. "Right..."
He immediately set about preparing it like the instructions said to and when he saw that it was the right time he added the inner membranes of the things to the potion.
He crossed that step off of the list then added the apple cider and lionfish heart. He watched as the potion took a pinky purplish colour. It was pretty.
Then he added the griffin dandruff. Now they just had to let it simmer.

With a smirk on his face he knew what could bring his cheerful mood back. ''Hey Cartwright!'' he called out ''I did not know you had the ability to talk to girls'' this was a pointless one, he knew well since he had a girlfriend but he had to say something anyway. Then he turned back to Rose ''I hope you can manage to keep me down while i am in the efect of it''
Stirring the potion, clockwise, counter-clockwise, clockwise...and so on, she listened when he whispered to her. And she definitely agreed with him. No way was he doing this potion with anyone else. Of course, she wouldn't tell him that because for one, she would surely turn bright red and she didn't want that at the moment, and two, the Professor might hear and get the wrong idea...
About to say something back, anything, she opened her mouth to speak but then shut it. Josh was preoccupied with talking to someone else at the moment, and she continued to stir the potion, watching it turn to the light golden color it was supposed to be. "Bring back up to a boil and simmer for five minutes." she mumbled to herself, while reading the rest of the instructions, but then heard Josh speaking to her again. "What do you mean keep you down?"

Keeley was bored out of her mind! Her potion was finished, and she had no partner to talk to. Urg, why weren't there any guys that were willing to work with her? Ah well, she pulled out her book, Treasure Island (what a classic!) and buried herself in the printed words, trying to push away that nagging thought in the back of her head asking her what would happen when she tried to test the potion. Probably fall head over heels for someone else's partner and get into a catfight over them. Great.

Cela stared at the instructions and since there was a while before adding things... she put her hand up.
"Professor, the lovage seeds, is that for later or is there a step missing in the instructions?"

Maybe she could work on the potion herself. Who needs boys? Psssh. 'Professor! Can I work by myself?' Please say yes, please say yes.

Well, Rafe was out of the question. And Torin was working with Reese. She didn't know who else to ask...so she looked around the room, hoping some guy would be nice enough to be partners with her.

Looking back at her notes, she poured the water into the cauldron and pulled the needed fluxweed from her supplies.
Looking up to check the water, she had a quick sweep of the classroom. She did need a partner and even though, she did feel quite confident that she could do it alone, she feared she would be docked for the sheer fact she did lack a partner. Sighing softly, she continued to work on crushing the fluxweed. Her water was almost to the point of boiling and she did have to add the fluxweed soon. Working as quickly and effiecently as she could, she finished her crushing task and added it to the water. Now to bring it to a brisk boil.
As she waited, she kept her eyes open for a possible partner. Who knew, maybe a late-comer would show. She could wish, right?

How many boys did Chelle know at Hogwarts? Maybe one or two. Who was going to pair up with her?
The terrible feeling in her stomach warmed up a bit when Professor said that it doesn't have to be someone who you suspect is currently enamored with you. That meant it didn't have to be someone you knew, right??? Relieved, her eyes searched the room frantically. `Umm, does anyone want to pair up with me please?' she asked hesitantly.

Frowning as she realised some people had done a fair bit towards their potion, Nia looked round the room. "Any males need a partner?" she asked doubtfully. Scratch that. "Anyone need a partner?" Maybe a fellow Ravvie girl wouldn't mind pairing up if it meant they could actually start.

Were they allowed to work on it alone cuz' it seemed like there wasn't any chance she was going to be getting a partner. Everyone was already all partnered up. Where were all the free guys? GAAHHHH. "Professor," Livvy started, raising her hand into the air. "I can't seem to find a partner. Would it be okay if I worked by myself?" she asked.

It would be nice to have a partner though... but it wasn't like any guys at this school liked her. The only guy she ever talked to was Carter, but she was pretty sure he was dating Ella or something. It's not like she was boy crazy, she was only eleven. Now she was almost done...

The professor watched as the students found partners -- well, most of them. Ah, the curse of co-educational facilities, there never seemed to be an equal balance of boys to girls! "If you are unable to find a partner of the opposite gender, please join a workstation where a boy-girl 'couple' is already in process, but brew your own cauldron of potion. After all, the only thing more amusing that manufactured love is a manufactured love triangle." A sinister smirk crossed the Professor's face.
"I commend those of you who noticed that the lovage seeds are not in the instructions just yet. My herbology star-students may also have noticed that the seeds themselves are a good deal larger than typical lovage seeds, and are also a slightly softer and more pliable than a traditional lovage seed." Indeed, the seeds were not truly tiny as normal lovage seeds are, but instead were each about the size of a sunflower seed and had a little bit of give when pressed gently.
"These particular lovage seeds I have provided for you have been pre-treated- first soaked for 9 days in a tincture of bubotuber pus and grain alcohol, then kept for at least one calendar year in a tisane of rosemary, damiana, and balm of Gilead blossoms. In doing this, we have infused the seeds with a bit of a potion-ingredient-within-a-potion ingredient. You can find such pre-treated seeds at any apothecary."
"As I said, this next part is a bit tricky, and you will need the assistant of a partner for this. Working together, one of you will gently -- GENTLY -- peel back the outer seed coat - that firm, dark 'shell' on each seed. As SOON as the seed coat is exposed, the other student will take one of the tiny pins found at each workstation and pierce the hilum- for those of you who have not studied your herbology, that is the indentation in the seed where it normally attaches to the plant stalk. You must work quickly, for the oils you wish to extract will evaporate almost as soon as the seed coat is held open! Once you have pierced the seed, you will catch the single drop of oil that you will find in each seed on a stirring spoon and immediately place it in your potion, stirring it three times clockwise. Do this for each seed until you have three drops of freshly harvested lovage-seed oil in your potions. I expect it may take you several tries to accomplish this, so feel free to take more treated lovage seeds from the potions supplies if needed. Also, please note that it the lovage oil smells terrible on its own and will irritate your skin terribly if it comes into direct contact, so please do not get it on your fingers-- or your partner's fingers."
"As soon as you have three drops of lovage seed oil in your potion, take turns stirring the cauldron vigorously-- passionately, one might say -- until your potion begins to thicken and boil. Your arms will grow tired, I have no doubt, but if done well the potion will begin to shift colors, and eventually will reach the consistency of maple syrup and smell absolutely intoxicating. Please restrain yourselves from drinking the potion, however... At least, not until instructed to do so, for there is one... final... step... in our process." He smirked again as he said this, as though daring them to drink it. He knew how difficult it would be to resist if they brewed it correctly!
"I will come around the room and observe; please feel free to ask questions. I know this is a rather tricky bit of work, but then, love itself is a tricky business, is it not?" He smiled at the students, his livery, wrinkled lips stretching into a rather creepy grin.
"Oh my..." Jake whispered as he listened to the Professor. There was a number of things that were making him start to freak out. First, it became blatantly obvious that at least one of them was to drink this stuff, and Jake vowed it would NOT be him. Second, the process with the lovage seeds seemed very... delicate and meticulous. NOT GOOD! Jake was fumbly and clumsy and flustered at the moment. Third... something about stirring fast... tired arms... maple syrup.
Jake loved maple syrup.
He wouldn't resist.
Scooting his stool further away from the workstation, Jake glanced sideways at Celandine and then gripped the desk, bowing his head and taking deep breaths. Could he feign illness and leave?
Maybe...
But... gahhhh. Now what?

Carter looked around. They were ready for the next part so he was wondering who would join Marilyn and him before they moved on. He picked up one of the seeds and played around with it a bit while waiting.

Keeley awkwardly walked toward the pair of Gryffindor and Slytherin kids that she had seen around, but not talked to before. "Er-hi. The Professor said that if we didn't have partners then we should work in trios. Um, would you mind if I worked with you?" Of course they probably minded, I mean, who wanted to work with a girl with bubblegum pink hair? Then again, the worst that can happen is them saying no. Ugh, she should've asked Carter, but too late now.
