The crisp November air sweeps through the Muggle Studies classroom as you step inside, though it looks nothing like a classroom today. Instead you'll find yourself standing in an abandoned city lot of sorts. Overturned buckets are scattered here and there among the trash, leaves, and fallen branches that litter the ground. Broken fencing lines three of the four walls of the classroom, while the fourth appears as old red brick, some of which has been painted by graffiti. A few busted and broken tires complete the scene, making you wonder what could've happened to this place. All in all, it's quite dismal.
Moxley can be found seated on one of the larger tires, dressed in old jeans and a long sleeve shirt. Her hair has been pulled back and her trainers are worn, a clear indication that the muggle studies professor is here to work. So come on in and pull up an overturned bucket or tire, soon you'll be working too.
CLASS IS NOW OVER!
Thanks for coming!

Ellery was too young to have volunteered at anything worth mentioning, besides local elementary school arts and crafts days. But her family did donate to charity a lot. She didn't know whether to mention that or not, though, so she just sat on her hands and waited.

Haddie paused a moment, debating on whether or not she should explain what Thanksgiving is. "Thanksgiving is a holiday in America where everyone eats a lot of food." She paused again, wondering if she should say more. Nope, that pretty much covered it. "We were little so we couldn't really do all that much, but it was fun hanging out with the homeless people and listening to their stories and telling them jokes. They had a lot of interesting stories." She shrugged.
Moxley was such a fan of Thanksgiving and she was fairly certain her expression said as much when the topic came up. Grin was instantaneous, just saying. Having spent so much time in the states during her travels, she’d been lucky enough to experience this day several times and she liked it, she did. ”Bringing food to those in need is an important, and popular, way to give back. Hunger is an issue whether you’re magical or not so it’s great that you’re family has been involved in helping to end this, even in a small way.”

"I volunteered at a homeless shelter too, but in a different way. I got to read stories to the kids that stayed there. I played games with them too. It was really cool and I think that they enjoyed it." Janelle knew that they had and she had felt really good afterward. Just knowing that she brought a little fun to the kids' day was satisfying.
It was always pleasantly surprising to her how many of the kids were familiar with the topics she was presenting and hearing that her students had been exposed to volunteer projects, in particular, warmed her heart. It was important business, and had more of an impact than they could know. ”I’m sure they did. Volunteering doesn’t always have to be in the form of a huge project. It’s important to remember that the small stuff sometimes means the most.”

"Every Saturday he would take me there with him and I would sort through the donations with him. It was really fun working with all the Muggles there, most of them were my dad's friends and I don't think any of them knew I could do magic." Several times when she was younger she had told them, but of course they didn't believe her and her mom would have a lecture prepared every time she found out. She was very fond of the memories.
Moxley hoped they didn’t know she could do magic because that was a huge issue but she didn’t dwell on it as the girl was here and safe and didn’t seem phased by what she’d said. ”That’s kind of your father and again, hunger is an issue that has been around for ages. Good example.”

Raising her hand, she said, "I volunteered at a soup kitchen last summer. On top of that I volunteered at a thrift shop, where I also donated clothes." She would probably continue doing volunteer work this summer because it was a good way to help others and build community.
Volunteering in the form of giving food and clothing were quite common so Moxley wasn’t all that shocked at hearing it several times. She smiled and nodded at Esme, acknowledging her contribution. ”I’m glad you’ve gotten to lend a hand, then.”

Luckily, most people here didn't know she came from a place like this; would they suddenly feel disgusted, scared and unsafe around her if they did? It was an awful thought, and it sat in her stomach like a stone sinking in a pond.
Sam did send a grateful smile at Tia's comment though, and to the boy that agreed with it.
The Professor's next words didn't ease her uncomfort. Getting accustomed to it wasn't a thing. It was what she had; what she made the most of. She wouldn't object to it being made better, of course, but IF and ONLY IF, people thought of the consequences after. There was no point sprucing it all up, building something all nifty and lovely on it, if the people that called it home then couldn't afford to be there any more - just moving somewhere else. Most likely somewhere worse. And that was aside from the fact most of the time it wasn't the people living there that made the mess. It was those that thought they had reason to look past it, and not care.
All these thoughts had put a decided scowl on Sam's face, and she might have been tempted to walk out had this not been the Headmistress' lesson. With a stifled sigh, she tried to think of a time she'd 'volunteered'.
"I 'elp give directions teh lost tourists in Lan-dan sumtimes," she said after a while. It wasn't much, but it was something.
The brunette had noted the scowl and she wasn’t blind to the fact that some of her students might have grown up in places like this. It wasn’t her intention to make any of them feel bad but she did feel like those who were more sheltered should be enlightened to the conditions others had experience all of their lives. ”I’m sure they appreciated that. Helping others, even in passing, counts, I’d say.” Because it wasn’t something you had to do, but it was a kind act that aided someone in accomplishing a goal.

Raven looking proud with his accomplishment, as he was smiling, didn't realize he done many until he said it today. He felt lucky now to raised by his muggle nanny.

A holiday just for eating? Pfffffffft. America had gotten rid of that holiday YEARS ago. Or they SHOULD have gotten rid of it by now. Why would they have a holiday devoted JUST to eating after they went through the uber-health craze of the 2010s? It just didn't make sense. Haddie was using her Americanness to tell LIES.
David rolled his eyes toward the girl to show his displeasure, then nudged Blaise as he rolled his eyes a second time. The double-eyeroll was supposed to say get a load of that loser. That was what his nudge said too. Clearly. But since Davie was still putting together a plan for revenge on Haddie, he then tapped the side of his head to show Blaise that he was thinking.
Sign language, ya know. Blaise would understand.
As for the professor's question about volunteering, David OBVIOUSLY had the best answer. It was the realest answer, and it related to Dark magical creatures. BAM.
"About five years ago, Hogwarts was attacked by Chorts," he offered. "So the whole school was under an ice age, even when the school year ended, because Chorts are so hard to get rid of." They'd been living in the Forbidden Forest, which was kinda funny to think about. His mum had been Headmistress at the time (who DIDN'T know that by now though), and he hadn't seen her for months that year (lots of kids probably didn't care about that though) because the school was so snowed in. "I had to come in and help my mum defrost windows and clean up some of the dungeon passages that were still slick. It was crazy boring times, but I think that counts as volunteerism?"
It still counted even if he'd been forced to help, right? He would have helped anyway, maybe, but defrosting stuff as a seven-year-old in the middle of July was tedious work. ESPECIALLY without your own wand to use. Why couldn't the school have hired more House Elves was beyond him.
Moxley had been watching David and the head tapping had her worried he might’ve had some bugs in his hair or something. She’d make sure to put some distance between herself and the young Ravenclaw just in case. Safety first and all that.
”Ah yes, I’m quite familiar with that situation. Unfortunate times. It was nice of you to lend a hand and I’m sure your mother appreciated it. Good example of a way you helped in the wizarding world.” A small smile and another glance at his head were given and then Moxley moved on to the next student.

So they were going to talk about volunteering and helping out people who were less fortunate than they were.
Truthfully, Ariadne was a little let down by the topic of today's lesson. It didn't seem as exciting as she imagined it to be, BUT...that may be because she wasn't as eager to volunteer as it seemed other people were. She was willing to have an open mind, though!
Her hand shot into the air. "I volunteered to help YOU when I first walked into the room!" she exclaimed. "You already know about that, though. Sooo...OH! I let a little old lady have my seat on the bus once! She didn't really look like standing and holding on to the poles was her thing." PLUS, her mother had elbowed her in the side and given her a LOOK, which helped Ariadne make up her mind REALLY quickly.
Moxley had decided she liked this little one, she did. Kid was adorable and matter-of-fact and reminded the muggle studies professor of her own daughter so it was hard not to find her endearing. After letting out a little chuckle at her comment about helping when she’d entered the room, the headmistress nodded her head. ”That was nice of you and I’m sure it was a gesture that was appreciated. Maybe it was how he was raised perhaps, but Spencer was always willing to help others, no matter what the cost was.
Spencer was raised in the muggle world so he knew quite a bit about the muggle world although his father was pureblood and his mother was muggle born, he went to a muggle school before he came to Hogwarts. Although he hated it due to his friends turning on him, he came to love the muggle world, but he now loved the magical world a bit more then the muggle world. After all, he could do magic and people think that he was a freak, and he had fiends like him so he wasn't alone. What wasn't there to love in the magical world? it was amazing.
Spencer raised his hand. " I volunteer every summer with my mother Professor, we go to parks that been vandalized aand we clean them up and repair swings and paint whatever needs to be covered up, I also volunteered at the homeless shelter feeding the homeless soup past Christmas Eve."said Spencer.
Well, the first example Spencer had provided was right in line with what they’d be doing today and Moxley nodded encouragingly, smiling. ”I’m sure the kids appreciate your work and are excited to use the parks once they’ve been repaired.”

"And I help dad when he's harvesting plant parts."
That probably didn't count as volunteering though. He really liked to do that, because it meant he got to touch things.
Plants! Yes, Moxley nodded enthusiastically. This was actually a good point and something they’d be tying in at a later time so it did count, so much. ”Plants not only help to make places aesthetically pleasing, but planting things like trees take the carbon released into the air and store it, while releasing oxygen. Good.”

"My mom is a healer at St.Mungo's and during the summer I would go there and volunteer, I would go visit the patients and talk to them a bit, and then I would play the piano for them as well." Everyone said her playing was really good and it helped some of the patients feel better! She loved helping out at the hospital, because she too wanted to be a Healer some day.
Another great example of volunteering in the wizarding world. Moxley smiled and nodded her head, pleased. ”Volunteering at hospitals in both wizarding and muggle communities can be extremely beneficial to both the patients and to you. Lifting the mood of others is a great way to lift your own. Great addition to our discussion.”

Humans were not teething toys.
Moxley laughed a little, finding it funny that it was the humans that posed a biting threat more so than the dogs at the shelter. She then realized that laughing at the kiddo when she seemed annoyed wasn’t exactly headmistress-y so she put on her best sympathetic face. ”It was nice of you to volunteer and I do hope someone spoke to them about the…biting thing.” Don’t laugh, Moxley. Volunteering? Did anything count? Like giving assistance to her friends when needed? Probably not. However it wasn't anything she had been told to do or asked to do she had offered to do these things so therefore it sort or counted. It was all she would say right now anyhow as she didn't feel like bringing up anything from home. "I've been helping a few of my friends with things they want to learn like dancing and learning to cast a corporal patronus," Hady replied with a small shrug adding a second later, "Not really sure how much that counts though." Volunteering.
Was she a bad person for not having a story like so many others had?
The first year couldn't think of a single example that fell into the similarities of others' experiences. Sure she helped people...but random things..and she worked with her extended family in a bunch of ways. Just not really publically. Out there in the world. Not like the others had.
Moxley smiled a little at Olivia, noting that though she wasn’t speaking up, she was paying attention. She was thankful for that.

Volunteering? Given his classmates' replies it sounds like the altruistic projects his grandma is always involved in. But it sure didn’t involve anything that looked like this place. It was always someplace that had tables and fizzy drinks and photographers. "Uhm... Sharing a tire to sit on, no big deal.
As class continued and a list of positive and negative emotions were made. Yoongi read them all, seeing his own in the negative list. Had they or do they know someone who volunteered? He listened to the other students answers, grinning at Hady as he heard hers. She was his Patronus Tutor after all. “Well, I volunteered to rescue the students and previous Headmistress from the Acromantulas in the forbidden forest two years ago” he said, raising his hand. Did that count? “And my oldest sister Victoria used to help out her best friend who worked as a mascot at a muggle shopping centre. Helping her handing out flyers”
Acromantulas, ugh. Moxley was not a fan, okay? She might've cringed a little but other than that, she was good. She was cool. "I'm sure the headmistress appreciated your help. That's a scary job but it was great of you to volunteer. Your sisters work, though different and less scary, is also important. I'm sure her friend was grateful."
Quote:
Ellery was too young to have volunteered at anything worth mentioning, besides local elementary school arts and crafts days. But her family did donate to charity a lot. She didn't know whether to mention that or not, though, so she just sat on her hands and waited.
Moxley smiled at Ellery, noting the younger girl had nothing to add. It was okay as long as she was actively listening.
Once the last of the examples had been addressed, Moxley took a pause to let students catch up with notes if they were taking them and then smiled. It was time to get to work and that was always the best part of class, at least in her opinion. She quite liked learning in a hands-on way.
”Great job, everyone. I’m really happy to hear that so many of you have, in some way, helped those around you. I think it’s really important to keep in mind that when you help others, you’re helping yourself, too.” Did they realize this? It actually wasn’t entirely for the benefit of others. ”Volunteering helps to build relationships, combat feelings of depression, boost confidence, help keep you in good physical condition, depending on the type of work you’re doing, and giving you a sense of purpose.” Among other things. ”It’s also important to rememer that the people you’re helping are not in any way less than you for needing some kind of help. Sometimes it’s hard to handle situations all on your own and accepting the help can be hard but it really does make a world of difference knowing you have a support system. Having people wanting to make a situation better and working towards it as a team helps to achieve that goal so much faster.” And speaking of goals…
Walking to the door, Moxley opened it and stepped out into the hallway. A moment later she reappeared and tugged a giant box back into the room. After a bit of pulling, the box opened to reveal all kinds of supplies. Bin bags, rakes and shovels, gloves, paint and paint brushes, brooms, big sponges, and buckets, already filled with water. Yes, she’d used magic to get them all in here safely but no more magic from this point out. They were going to get their hands dirty.
”Our job today is this, to think about what this space could be and then work together to make it a much less depressing place. I’ve got everything we could need to accomplish this goal and I want you to first help and clean up the trash, then help to make it as beautiful as you can. Work with friends or on your own, interact with your classmates, but please do stay on task. I hope that by the end of class, we’ll have given this environment new life.” With that she grabbed a pair of gloves for herself and put them on. ”Come on, you lot, let’s get started.”
OOC: Hi, lovelies! What I need from you for this part of class is at least 3 cleaning posts and at least 3 posts helping to paint and/or beautify the place in any way your charrie can think of. Be creative, have fun, don’t be afraid to interact with Moxley <3 Class will wrap up on Tuesday, the 26th, sometime in the evening EST. Happy RPing!

Ariadne BEAMED at the Headmistress. She was SUPER nice and seemed to like everything Ariadne had to say. Her class didn't seem really hard either, so it wasn't like coming here was really going to break her. She didn't know for SURE, but Ariadne kind of thought she might enjoy Muggle Studies. MIGHT. She was still reeeeeeally rusty on the subject of Muggles and how they lived, but she thought this class might end up being fun. They had the BEST Headmistress everrrr! Never mind the fact that this was Ariadne's first time going to school, hence her first time actually having a Headmistress.
So they were going to clean this place up? ... WITH NO MAGIC?! There was paint, though, and Ariadne was really getting antsy thinking about all the ways she could paint that fence! She wanted to work with a friend, though! "Anybody want to work with me on this?" she asked. PICK ME! PICK ME!

Had Yoongi just said he helped rescue Davie's mum?!?! She'd never really talked about the acromantula stuff to him... aww, what a guy! THAT was why he was in Gryffindor. And why he was Head Boy. Yup yup. He was a hero, and Davie was now an official volunteer. Just look at all the altruism already present in his heart. Look at it. See how Davie was such a good kid, despite the rumors HADDIE was probably spreading about him?
Anyway. He'd wasted enough time scowling at the back of her actually ridiculous head all class. David was grateful they'd be standing up and doing something now, and so... he just did that. Stood up, moved over to the box to get a trash bag, and then drifted back to his tire-home. He would make a GREAT bum, even though that wasn't the point of this exercise. The point was... to clean? Their classroom? Er??
"Headmistress Moxley?" David raised his hand, decided that was silly since everyone was moving around, and then moved himself closer to the teacher. "Why are we cleaning up the classroom? Shouldn't we be out in... I dunno, Hogsmeade or London, cleaning up a REAL city?" He was assuming that this was their usual classroom, just transfigured. And as a follow-up question, "What do you want us to do with the old tires?"
The buckets had many obvious uses, but the tires? Couldn't they make tire swings like the Gryffindor kid had tried to do?

Kitty was actually looking forward to cleaning up the room. Sure they couldn't use magic, but she wasn't very good at magic anyway (the only cleaning spell she knew was Scourgify) and she had recent experience cleaning when she and helped Professor Kitridge clean the library with water and soap.
"I can work with you if you want" Kitty said with a smile to the first year Slytherin student. "I'm Kitty Valentine, by the way. So...what do you want to do first?" If it was just her she would have started by moving stuff out of the way.

Olly had just glanced around and listened to other people talk about volunteering. When had they found time to do that? He, personally, had not done much to help other people. Not that he didn't want to, but that he was only twelve. So.
The activity sounded incredibly boring. Cleaning? Were the students only there to perform manual labor for Moxley to help her clean up her classroom? Why didn't she just do it with her magic? She'd made it dirty. And Davie had a very good point. They weren't actually helping anybody by cleaning up this classroom, so it seemed like a complete waste. He just nodded at that, but figured he had to at least try and make an effort in the class. Because it was class. And because Moxley was cool so he wasn't going to do nothing.
Olly grabbed a rake before moving back to the wall he'd been standing by. There was a bunch of leaves over there, so he began raking them into a pile. That was helpful. "Hey, want to work together?" He asked Ava.
Ilia didn't like this place one bit. It felt unclean and desolate. She felt no different than those who answered negatively and she didn't answer. Her thoughts went immediately to Henric however. Though, she didn't want to alert the crowd so she walked up to him slowly and stood just a little in front of him. Her hand reached back to take his nonchalantly and she hoped that she'd managed to hide it from the Headmistress' view. It's okay, you aren't alone now. She was becoming less and less thrilled with this.
She ignored little Rachel, but yes she caught that look. No, she was not falling into a dirty bucket. Eww. Now if you wanted her to sit on dirt outside though, that'd be fine. As for answering..... Umm...."My family hosts a charity ball every year around Christmas time. The funds that we raise go to wizarding children in need and creature based charities. It is usually my job to help acquire toys and clothes to bring to the children." Although with her and Henric's 'disagreement going on, she hadn't helped last year.
Henric smiled a little when llia quietly slipped her fingers into his hand. He relaxed under her warm touch. It was comforting to know that she would be there with him no matter what. He wasn't alone. Sometimes he needed to remind himself that he wasn't a lost orphan anymore. He shouldn't continue feeling this way. But he wished the environment they were in didn't trigger memories of it. He sighed, knowing it was inevitable.
Moxley asked whether they had volunteered before. Of course...he did. Since the day he could learn how to read. His family would come and visit every chance they've got and did their best caring for the homeless community near their home. They did all sorts of things for charity. From giving food and warm clothing to organising fund-raising events. They were his reasons to be actively involved in a youth volunteering programme too. But... Henric wasn't ready to start participating now and remained silent throughout...
Finally, the got to the main activity...Henric tugged on llia's hand and smiled at her. "Partners?" He guessed he could help carry away the more heavier stuff.
Cleaning was definitely something that Jaemin knew how to do. The small boy weaved between some of the milling about students to grab a pair of gloves and a bag; he stared at the supplies for a moment before also grabbing a broom. He didn't wanna pick everything up in itty bitty bits and pieces, it'd be easier to sweep it all into a pile. Yes indeed.
The Headmistress had said they could have partners, but... Jaemin wasn't planning on lifting any of the big huge tires, so did he really need one? He'd managed to clean at home without a sibling or one of his parents, and he'd managed to clean at the places they'd gone to plant flowers alone as well. He wouldn't bother anyone else for this then, but he'd let them bother him if they wanted.
He headed off to the most junked up, cluttered up area without giant tires or heavy things in it, pulled on his gloves, and started sweeping the garbage into a pile with his broom.

Moxley smiled at David and then turned her attention to the students, some that were already up and looking for people to work with. Her eyes followed them as she answered the Ravenclaw. "Honestly, I wanted everyone to be able to try their hand at volunteering in a safe environment, one I could control." Especially with what had happened to two of her students who she hoped would return to school soon. She couldn't imagine what their parents were going through. "I also think it's important to develop your positive thinking and turn it into positive action, even if it's just in our classroom today." There would be other opportunities to expand on the making a place liveable idea soon enough for them.
As for the tires, Moxley shrugged and looked at him once more. "Be creative, Mr. Truebridge. I'll leave that up to you and your classmates to decide." She gave him an encouraging smile.

It didn't take long to find a partner! Ariadne was excited to be approached by somebody she didn't know yet. NEW FRIEND ALERT! "I'm Ariadne Greingoth, a first year," she replied. "Yeah, cool! Let's work together! I want to paint the fence a rainbow of colors!" Never mind the fact that a rainbow fence would probably look awful in real life. Ariadne wanted one board red, the next one orange, the next one yellow, and so on! She couldn't even GET to the fence, though.
"Maybe we should start by bagging up some of the trash and leaves, though. I can't really get to the fence right now," she said. "Does that sound good to you?" They could always paint later! She headed over to supply box and pulled out two garbage bags and two pairs of gloves, one set for her and one for Kitty. "I got us some garbage bags and gloves," she said, passing a set to Kitty. Ariadne slipped on her gloves, opened her trash bag, and began cleaning.
She found a few candy wrappers and a plastic cup and tossed them into her bag. After that, it was just a bunch of shredded paper that used to be who-knew-what. "So what year are you in, Kitty?" she asked.

"Oh." Well that made perfect sense. Yes, safety first. Davie nodded at Moxley and followed her gaze out to the busy classroom as he got a few ideas. Plus the thing about positive thinking made him feel a bit guilty all of a sudden for even asking was valid. Yeah. Make this place nice and clean first. Sure. They could do that.
He raised his brows as she said it was up to them to decide what to do with the tires. "Coooooool," the second-year drawled, a small smile working its way onto his face. "Yep. Got it, Headmistress. Thanks."
WHO WANTS TO MAKE A TIRE SWING!!!?! Davie hurried back to his tire, almost dropping his empty trash bag on the way. He needed some partners, stat. Where was that Gryff kid? Davie started looking around for a way to get this thing to work...

Jace simply agreed to what the professor said. The sense of purpose thing? He liked that. It was very rewarding, and it actually gives him a direction. Besides, in Japan, it’s always best to give positive energy all the time, for it will return to the doer a hundred-fold. Karma, as what others would want to call it. Jace didn’t know that he has been volunteering all along. He thought he was just doing a positive deed.
This realization made the young boy pumped to clean up the place. He simply can’t wait to see the place clean and organized! As the box was pulled in inside the classroom, Jace quickly finished his notes, hid everything else inside his bag, and made a beeline for a pair of gloves...broom...and a bin bag. Obviously, the trash should go out first.
Jace moved towards the less crowded spot of the classroom, and began to sweep the floor. Ever since he could walk, he was taught in Japan to keep his immediate surroundings clean. In his muggle school in Japan, they were even asked to clean up their tables after taking their lunch...and their classroom with a bucket of water, and a piece of cloth. It was to teach discipline, more than volunteering though.
As Jace collected the trash into a heap with his broom, he paused and stared at the pile. There was something wrong with his sweeping. Turning, he left his pile momentarily and headed to where the professor was standing. “Ano...Professor Moxley?” Jace gripped his broom in front of him, obviously trying not to be shy to ask the professor a question. “Do I...need to sort the trash? I found paper, leaves, and plastic bottles mixed together...and I was wondering if I need to separate them? The bottles can be recycled still...” Because in Japan, it was a BIG deal in communities. “I’m not sure if you do Waste Management here.” GRIN. Whoa, big words right there.

Rachel listened intently to what Professor Moxley had to say then watched her with interest as she brought in the supplies. It was no surprise when she informed them that they would be cleaning up the classroom as part of the lesson.
She stood up from the bucket to go over to the supply pile to pick out a rake. Rachel opted to start off by raking up the leaves littering the ground. She coincidentally found a rake with a pink bottom. Light pink to be exact. Smiling to herself because she had found one on her favourite colour, the girl set about gathering the fallen leaves into a small, neat pile.

While she listened, Olivia caught the headmistress' gaze aimed in her direction making her mildly nervous. Was she in trouble for not answering? Or being judged for not volunteering in any way? But thankfully she was soon smiled at, giving the opinion the attention wasn't a bad thing, the first year becoming relieved. The last she thing wanted to get on the bad side of a professor and headmistress.
Continuing to listen as Moxley moved on, the Ravenclaw watched as a large box was brought into the room igniting her curiosity. She didn't have to wait long as it was opened to reveal a whole assortment of things. Supplies that would be useful for cleaning and painting. Which was revealed just a few moments later, to be the purpose of the lesson and project for the class. An activity which made the instructions for comfy and able-to-get-dirty clothes all clear to her.
She could do that.
Olivia wasn't afraid of getting her hands dirty.
Or her gloves dirty in this case. Best to insure she didn't deal with anything on her skin that might not be good to touch. It wasn't like she could clean with magic like they had in the library. For one, this was Muggle Studies and two, it kinda defeated the purpose. The first year got to to retrieve said item from the collection of supplies, plus a garbage bag, before heading off to a spot of the room she figured she might as well start with. Once there, she began with picking up pieces of scattered trash.
Some wrappers and crumbled paper here...some discarded food or such there.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Rather glad that her hair was in one plait today (for it kept her less distracted as the two plaits would bounce against her shoulders), Rachel continued to pile the leaves into one heap. She watched it grow larger. She was extremely pleased with her work and was also glad that there was no breeze, however mild, to blow them away.
When she though that the first pile had gotten big enough and the area she had decided to work on was clean and devoid of leaves, she moved on to another area which was quite close by. Wasting not even a second, the first year proceeded to draw these leaves into another pile. Soon she would be getting a thrash bag to scoop those leaves into.

It appeared that her answer did count. Really it should being as she took time from her day and whatever she may have been doing to assistance them with whatever it was they might have needed. So it did make sense that this would count for something. Hady wasn't about to let the fact that some of her peers had done far more volunteering then herself either. It wasn't a competition it was the helping of those that needed it.
Getting to her feet the lady snake carefully made her way towards Professor Moxley and collected herself a bag to put garbage in. Pushing the sleeves of her shirt up to her elbows she was ready to begin. Right where she was standing was a fine place indeed. Bending down Hady collected papers and wrappers tossing them into her bag. Working alone was fine by her just as it always was. That was more then enough that needed to be done right now and going at it alone was alright, for now at least.

Honestly, he was a little disappointed with the task they were given. He had come dressed for action, and the action that they would be seeing was actually quite dull. They were... 'fixing up' the place. Wasn't that supposed to be a local government thing??? And if it was vandalised, it would like get vandalised again anyway...
Still, it WAS better than book work at least... he supposed.
Grabbing himself some gloves and pulling those on, Zeke helped himself to a rubbish bag and turned to stare at the vast boringness of it all. Ugh. He was not exactly the 'picking up rubbish' type. Figuring though that the sooner he started, the sooner he could get out of here because in theory, if one was busy, time would fly. So time, do that flying thing. Now.
Nudging bits of rubbish with his feet, Zeke then bent over and picked it up, dropping it into the bag. This was not a fun lesson.

From just a few feet away Hady spotted Zeke doing the exact same task she herself had started. Picking up trash. A not in the least bit fun activity. On ones own anyhow. With a small grin on her face she picked up a few small bits of trash dropping them into her bag.
Something more needed to happen. A bit of anything to jazz up what they were currently doing. That's when she had a small idea. Reaching down she grabbed up some parchment and balled it up into a tight ball. Lifting her head she let her eyes sweep towards her friends meeting them once more for only a brief second. Since no one was around them or at least to close by and it was only a bit of parchment Hady tossed the balled up garbage the few feet into Zeke's trash bit with a little smirk. Buddying up and adding a bit of fun to the job would help keep things move along swiftly.
Garbage basketball anyone?

Boring... boring... boring... dirty... boring...
That's what this was. And while he didn't mind getting dirty, or manual labour, this really wasn't what he had in mind. In fact, what would his family think if they knew THIS is what they taught at Hogwarts now???... Somehow he didn't think they'd approve. It was a good thing they wouldn't know then, because he STILL wasn't keen on transferring to Durmstrang.
He was still picking up rubbish bits and glancing around occasionally as he did so - though somehow he completely missed Hady's look, and only really noticed her existence when her rubbish came his way. HA! Good one, Hady.
Zeke grinned, shaking his head slightly before aiming the bit of rubbish he still had in his hands toward her bag. If she was going to help him fill his, the least he could do was return the favour.

Seriously, Moxley could suggest any other activities that were also part of volunteering but in a more fun way. Maybe after the cleaning they could make this place better like... Nah, Ava currently had no idea about that. When she was gonna start to do something, Olly asked her to work together. Well, why not? "Sure, what we're gonna do first?" She asked her Slytherin mate. They could start by... collecting some trash, or anything else.

Whoo! Yes!
Her bit of balled parchment landed right on target! Nothing but bin is what she got! Hady beamed at Zeke a small laugh coming from her lips when he shook his head. What, she was only having some fun. "Might as well make a game or something out of it," she commented with a small shrug holding her trash bag open and moving it just enough so that the garbage he'd thrown her way landed inside. "Nice one." It was.
Walking around and collecting more trash off the floor and either tossing it into her bag or sometimes Zeke's bin wasn't a bad idea. It mixed things up a little bit. When she'd gathered everything she could throw away Hady tied off her bag and set it aside grabbing a bucket of soapy water and a large sponge. It was time to move on and clean something else. Like the walls or the floor even it didn't really matter just so she was doing her part. A quick glance towards Zeke was made in silent question. Did he want to join her or continue on his own?

"You're not wrong there," he replied, agreeing with her point. He hadn't thought to make a game of it himself, but he was happy enough to go along with it, and that he did. Zeke continued to work alongside Hady, and together they made some real progress as far as the amount of litter in the space was concerned. His bag was close enough full for him to tie it closed without the guilt of a half-done job. No. He'd done well enough, especially considering he'd also added to Hady's bag as much as she had added to his own.
"You're not doing more cleaning are you?" he questioned, staring as she opted to pick up soapy water and a sponge. Like. WHY? He instead picked up a paintbrush and wiggled it in her direction. "This would be tons more fun." Mmhmm. She should reconsider her choice here, and to convince of of this he also wiggled his brows.

Not wrong.
That's all she had heard there. Not that Zeke had said anything else. She knew she wasn't wrong and the work/fun they had tossing garbage into each others trash bags showed. The time flew by much more quickly and in little to no time at all both bags were full.
With a soapy sponge in hand to which she was already cleaning something sticky off a wall she heard Zeke speak to her. Yes she was going to keep cleaning. Wasn't he? Turning to look over her shoulder at the boy she noticed what he was holding instantly and the eye wiggle didn't go unnoticed either. It actually got a laugh out of her and a shake of the head causing her strands of hair to fall free of her ponytail. "This could be fun too," she answered with a smirk giving her wrist and hand a flick in his direction in order to get him with some soapy water from her sponge (not the face of course). See she could prove a point too.
However his painting idea could pose more interest then cleaning. Dropping the sponge into the bucket she went to grab herself a brush to join him.
