Chamber off the Great Hall - Tapestry & Hoard Viewing
As announced in a recent Daily Prophet article, the treasure found in the Great Lake has been returned to Hogwarts alongside a tapestry which experts believe detail the hoard's origins. The pieces lie in the empty chamber off of the Great Hall, open for students and staff to visit, although safeguards have been put in place by museum curators to ensure no items, not even the smallest copper coin, can go a-wandering.
The tapestry is made up of seven story panels, each about a half metre in size, and is laid out on a long table pushed against the far wall of the room. For those who know their Muggle history, it wouldn't be too dissimilar to the Bayeux Tapestry in style -- albeit it much smaller. The needlework was finely done, made of woollen yarn on a woven linen, in a limited colour palette of mainly grey, brown and green hues, with hints of yellow and indigo. The figures tend to be in outline only, the wizard's ornate robes an obvious exception, with blocks of colour for flags, armour, horses and the treasure. Above the figures were a few scattered words in runes, hinting at the true story of events.

What actually did happen though? Have a close look, and see what you think. Your interpretation is as good as anyone else's.
OOC: This thread is for all primary Hogwarts characters to come and see all of the items that were found under the lake and analyzed inAncient Runes. Furthermore, the tapestry that is associated with them is on display. How the story shown on this tapestry is interpreted is entirely up to your character. With history having gaps, who knows what the right interpretation may be.
Please note that the text cut above vaguely describes what every character would be seeing. The only descriptors on the tapestry would be the runes provided.
A number of security charms have been casted on the hoard and tapestry to prevent them from being removed from the exhibit. Attempts to remove the items without first undoing the charms will result in being the recipient of Stinging and Knockback Jinxes. These items cannot be moved or summoned until the charms have been lifted.

Although Haraldur, along with the rest of staff, had already had plenty of time to study the objects from the Great Lake; he still felt the need to make a detour to the Great Hall for another look. Plus, he had to check that everything was in order. He did not trust or even particularly like the Ministry, so of course he had to double-check that the whole treasure along with the tapestry was there for the students to see. The old man made his way there, on foot for once, with his winter boots leaving snowy marks on the stone floor. Once entering the chamber, he shuffled up to the tapestry at the end of the room and brushed some snow out of the red feathers on his head. He stopped at the first story panel, reached into his pocket to fish out some peanuts and frowned at the tapestry in front of him.
He had a little while before he had to resume his groundskeeping duties, which allowed him to linger with the bag of peanuts in front of the tapestry for a few more minutes. Honestly, it interested him. Not as much as soaring above white, snowy mountains in Iceland interested him but ya know, interesting enough to eat peanuts in front of.

Crunch, crunch.
So it looked like the history of magic professor was not the only one who got the idea that morning to get a look at Hogwarts's newest treasure. He didn't have to teach class until evening that day and he had already graded most everyone's homework. He was up for an early morning snack 9those house elves were as helpful as ever) and that was when he walked into the area where the story panels were being kept.
"Fascinating, isn't it?" he said loudly to announce his presence. "Who knows how long they sat in the Lake, neither untarnished by the ravage of nature nor sighted by human eyes." Did the merfolk see them? Hmmm. "It makes you wonder what other treasures and mysteries there might be right under our very noses."
He gazed at the story panels with an intense admiration.

So Maddie missed the great search and rescue in the Great Lake, but she was not going to miss this! She was still kicking herself for not signing up for Creature Companions. She just be that dive under the lake was super fun! She headed toward the chamber off the Great Hall, assuming there would be tons of students and staff members alike crowded in there. She was surprised to see only two other people there.
"Hi, Professors Baldvinsson and Curtains!" she said.
The young teen glanced at the display, suddenly feeling that it was way more mysterious than she had originally thought. She was scared to even move and accidentally knock something over. She had walked up just in time to hear Curtains wonder about other possible treasures out there somewhere. "Will there be another hunt, Professor?" she asked. Please say yessss!

Gaston needed coffee! His daughter had kept him up half the night, and he had a class to teach this afternoon so caffeine was a must! He was on his way to the staff room when he decided to take a quick detour to check out the tapestry. He peered into the chamber and saw he wasn't the only person taking a look at the treasures. "Hello, Haraldur, Charles!" he greeted, joining his colleagues. He saw Maddie as well and gave her a warm smile. "Good morning, Miss Kemp!"
Bright blue eyes stared intently at the tapestry. So it looked like a wizard joined a band of Vikings... they went on raids and battles together and amassed treasure... That part made sense, but the last two panels had Gaston stumped. Why would the wizard double cross his comrades and take the treasure? And... was that a skull he saw in the last panel? Did the wizard kill the others?
His eyes flicked toward the treasure recovered from the lake. He'd seen the items before in the staff room, but now he was examining them in a different light. What among this treasure could be more important than a human life? "What could've happened to the wizard?" he wondered out loud.

Charles turned at the small pitter patter of footsteps. Ah, it was one of the students. "Goood morning Ms. Kemp," he said cheerfully, turning back towards Haraldur as she asked him a question. "Well I think that's a splendid idea, wouldn't you agree, Professor? You found these panels in under an hour, now imagine what you could find if you devoted a day to the task. Although honestly, I'm surprised our merfolk friends hadn't discovered these before..."
"Morning, Gaston," he said, turning only slightly to regard the usually charming charms professor. "What happened to the wizard? I am more concerned with what happened to the skull. Or, to be more precise, what happened to the man or woman that it belonged to."
"Well the Runes don't give much away," Noble replied to the History of Magic teacher, as he wandered along the length of the tapestry from the doorway. Seemed he wasn't the only one who'd decided to come here in the morning break to look at everything together in situ. He took a long sip of his morning coffee as he mentally checked his previous translation of the final panel. "There it lies. There what lies?" It wasn't exactly detailed, was it?
But it wasn't the last panel that really intrigued him; it was the first two. Who was this wizard? And how did he end up involved with the Vikings? He wandered towards Haruldur now, unsurprised the man had brought snacks. "Knut for your thoughts?"
Argyle popped into the chamber, a duster in hand. Old objects need to be kept clean just like new objects. Dust…dust…dust. Dust…dust…dust. The house elf had no clue as to scratches on them but the other residents and visitors of the castle seemed to be interested. Her wide-eyed gaze taking in the room off the Great Hall, it was easy to notice the professoreses all there and make the house elf stop in her tracks. Ooooo and student too.
Maybe not all were in class, the house elf having thought it would be a perfect time to clean undisturbed. “Sorry Master Professors…Mistress,” Argyle apologized. “Argyle didn’t mean to interrupt."

Gaston looked up from examining the treasure at the sound of Charles's voice. His blue eyes widened at the history professor's reply to Miss Kemp. He did not think another hunt was a splendid idea at all! Had everyone completely forgotten about the grindylow attack the last time? No treasure was worth putting the students through that again! Unfortunately,, the final decision on another hunt wasn't up to him, so he kept quiet on the matter.
His expression changed when Charles mentioned the skull in the last panel of the tapestry. Perhaps he misspoke... "I mean, what could've happened to him to make him think taking that treasure was a good idea?" he tried to clarify. "And do you think he was responsible for... whatever happened to that skull in the last panel?" Maybe the skull was that of the wizard? Retaliation for stealing the treasure, perhaps?
Turning his attention back to the tapestry, Gaston stared at the image of the wizard, as if that act would somehow reveal the answers to his burning questions. What happened to you? he thought. Why did you take that treasure? He was lost in thought, trying to put himself in the wizard's shoes. Then an idea dawned on him. What if something tragic had happened to the wizard - or someone he cared about? That could explain why he'd double crossed the Vikings. Maybe the tragedy caused him to go mad...
or what if the Vikings had been the cause of said tragedy?
He was so lost in thought that he barely registered Ignatius speaking; he greeted the other man with a polite but silent nod, so as not to distract him from his thoughts - or distract himself form his own. Moments later, he heard another voice and finally tore his eyes form the tapestry to see Argyle dusting. "It's no trouble, Argyle," he replied with a slight smile. After all, the house elf had as much right to be there as they did.

Maddie took another glance at the display before her. Here she was thinking Ancient Runes was just another boring subject, but it was actually turning out to be somewhat...fun. When she heard her name, she looked up to see Professor Marchand. Whoooa. This was like the professor hotspot or something! "Morning, Professor Marchand!" she greeted. She was starting to feel a little out of place. Maybe another student would come up in a minute or two...
Her eyes and ears perked up when Professor Curtains mentioned another hunt. She'd be in on that one, for sure! When someone else joined them, a hopeful Maddie thought it might be another student, but it was Professor Noble instead. Not that she was disappointed or anything, but his presence just further added to the fact that she was seriously outnumbered here. So many professors and so few students!
But then Argyle popped in, and she suddenly felt a lot better about being so outnumbered. "Hi, Argyle!" she said. That one was Argyle, right? Because sometimes she had a hard time telling them apart. As she listened to the professor's talk about the tapestry, her eyes grew wide. This seemed like one amazing story! "Maybe some of the treasure is cursed or something, and the wizard was hiding the treasure, so nobody else could be hurt!" Or, at least, that was the thoughts going on in her mind... It would also explain why the merpeople had stayed away.
Professor Gryffindor was the first to respond to the diminutive house elf. No Trouble it was. Goody for Argyle. Much dusting to get to Argyle had, the feather duster still at hand. Dust…dust…dust. Dust…dust…dust. Dust…dust…dust. No bothering here. Nope...nope...nope. Just the flittering of the duster as Argyle moved around the display of found items.
The others didn’t respond to Argyle’s presence, or at least hadn’t noticed it, interested in old things. Yep, that’s what they were. Old things to be cleaned. Mistress Student did react to Argyle though. Addressing Argyle by name even, making the house-elf’s wide eyes widen further. “Hello Mistress.”

In the midst of all the chaos, Maddie temporarily forgot where the treasure and hoard had been showcased. She flailed about for a bit, not sure which way to go, until she suddenly remembered. In theory, she'd been ready for a darks arts battle since she'd been a first year. For all practical purposes, though, she was like a fish out of water.
She finally came to a skidding halt just before the viewing area, remembering the time she'd been here before. This story had been right in front of them all along, hadn't it? This entire battle had been displayed right here in this chamber, and they'd never even seen it coming. After this, she seriously had a new appreciation for Ancient Runes.
Again, all thanks to the chaos surrounding the Inferi invasion, Maddie forgot that the entire viewing was protected by security charms. Marchand had just ordered them to go get the treasure, and she'd just taken off. So when she hurried forward and put her hands around the gold pendant, she was thrown back with such a force that she was sure the Inferi had suddenly joined her. When she landed, she felt every bit of the fall, and she winced as she remembered that the treasure was protected by charms.

Nettie ran after Maddie, determined to get this stupid treasure that had caused SO many problems and stopping this whole mess once and for all. She arrived and ran into the room JUST in time to see Maddie thrown back from the exhibit. At first she was afraid Inferi had somehow gotten in here, but then she remembered the charms surrounding the treasure.
Great. Another problem.
"Maddie!" she exclaimed, running up to the older girl to help her up. "Are you ok?!" she then turned to the treasure and frowned, groaning. "How are we supposed to get the treasure when they're protected by the spells!?"
She didn't know the first thing about disarming the charms. Maddie was older, but only by a few years, so she probably didn't know how to do it either. If they didn't get that treasure, they wouldn't be able to stop the Inferi!

She didn't know the first thing about disarming the charms. Maddie was older, but only by a few years, so she probably didn't know how to do it either. If they didn't get that treasure, they wouldn't be able to stop the Inferi!
Maddie was still wincing a little, when she heard the footsteps closing in on her. She gasped a little, but then she relaxed when she saw Nettie. "I'm okay," she grumbled, a little annoyed at how sore she was. She was more annoyed at herself for being so quick to help out that she almost got herself into big trouble in the meantime. She sighed and allowed Nettie to help her up.
"Professor Kennedy's on his way, I think," she answered, and then she froze. A thought had just occurred to her. What if the Inferi got here before Kennedy did? Then it'd be just her and Nettie alone with them. "Nettie!" she said, withdrawing her wand. "Get your wand at the ready, just in case. If you hear someone coming, be on alert. Just make sure you know who it is before you act. If it's the Inferi, you know what to do."
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Dorian ran behind Maddie and Trinetta to the location of the treasure. He still had no clue what the inferi had mean by treasure and the fact that these students knew what it was made him even more confused.
But he knew the moment they entered the room where the exhibit was held and he gapsed in understanding. The treasure was the coins they had found in a cave in the lake! A place the Ravenclaw had NOT been in to because he was one of the only ones who actually listened to the prefects when they said to stay away.
He was about to laugh that this hadn't been his fault when Maddie suddenly flew back. He looked at her with a worried expression but Nettie was already helping her up so he put his thoughts on how they could remove the protective charms.
As he thought, one of his hands went in to his robe pocket and he paced back and forth in the room. He was still holding on to his wand of course and his other hand in his pocket touched..... A coin...
Dorian froze for a split second, barely even noticable if one hadn't been paying attention to him. He had kept one of the coins he had found near the entrance gate. He thought that he could have exchanged it in to real money at Gringrotts but the guilt had been too strong after a while that he had went and find a staff member to give it to.
Sadly, he had chosen today to do this and naturally he wasn't able to because...well, inferi were kinda attacking them all..
Dorian bit his lower lip as he thought. Maybe he could throw the coin on the treasure the moment Professor Kennedy lifted the protective charms? Yes. Perfect plan!

Kalen was running down the hall after making sure that no Inferi were following them. That’s the last thing he wanted at the moment. And Kalen did not run, ever. So seeing the Librarian/Astronomy Professor booking it down the hall was indeed new. And an indication of how serious this all was.
He skidded to a stop in front of the chamber, his leather loafers did not have good traction, but that wasn’t on his mind right now.
He had three objectives, get the treasure, keep the students safe, and hope to all that was good and magical that Tristan was okay and alive. As soon as he saw the Inferi, he could understand why they were his best friends boggart, and Kalen could feel a panic rising in him at the thought of his Tris out there surrounded by his worst nightmare!
Once again the urge to bolt through the night to find Tristan rose up in him. It was intense and he felt like his entire body was shaking as he tried not to think about the fact that his best friend could die. Either of fear or actual Inferi.
Merlin.
He arrived right as Maddie was thrown back and he moved to kneel next to her. “Are you okay? These things have protective charms on them.” He said as he looked at her Nettie and Dorian
“I’m going to release the charms, and then we are all going to grab as much as we can and hurry to give it back to the Inferi, we need to get all of it as well, so we might need to Accio any treasure that might not be here.” He said as he stood and pulled out his wand.
His hand was shaking as faced the treasure and several wand waves and nonverbal spells later, he hesitantly reached out to touch a tapestry. And didn’t get shocked!
“All right, charms are down! Grab as much as you can and go!”

Maddie was grateful for all the concern, but she kind of wished she'd have picked herself up off the ground before everybody got in here. Embarrassing!"I'm okay," she told Professor Kennedy. She nodded when he reminded her there were protective charms in place. "Tell me about it." She rubbed her sore arm then picked herself up off the floor. "I kind of forget with all the chaos going on."
So where were they?
Right. Inferi--invading the castle and wanting their treasure. As in, NOW. Her fly across the floor had done nothing to her memory. Unfortunately. She stood still and watched as Kennedy expertly released all the charms and then commanded them to grab all they could and go. Uhh...was he sure that all the charms had released? Because the last time a professor called for her to go grab the treasure, she ended up being volleyball'ed across the floor.
"Professor Marchand taught us a charm," she said. "The Undetectable Extension Charm. We could probably bring a whole lot back with us at once." It might be faster, though, just to start bringing back anything right now, just on the off-chance it kept the Inferi at bay. With hesitation, she crept forward and grabbed the gold pendant she'd tried to get before, only this time, she wasn't slung across the floor. She grabbed a few more coins, cupped everything in her arms, and then dashed off.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Oh, Professor Kennedy was here!
Dorian stopped pacing and quickly held his hand out of his robe pocket with a guilty expression on his face. He hid it by turning to look behind him and was surprised that no one else had followed. So the rest had stayed with Professor Marchand? Good, he needed the help more.
As he turned his back to the door opening, Dorian watched as Professor Kennedy tried to get rid of the protective charms. The Ravenclaw looked a bit worried for a moment but when he said that it had worked he sighed "Thanks Professor!" Alright lets get the treasure!
He was about to dash forward when Maddie suggested the Undetectable Extension Charm and he held up two thumbs up. "You're brilliant!" even he could use that spell because he had used it a lot when he had been doing his Astronomy Term Long assignment and had to drag his blanket along.
He took his coin out of his pocket and hid it in his other hand and then pointed his wand at his robe pockets yet again and shouted "Capacious extremis!" He did not see the result but when he felt inside of this pocket he noticed that it was much bigger on the inside now.
Grabbing whatever he could reach, Dorian began stuffing his pockets with coins and whatnot. It felt.....good actually.... To hold that much treasure. If only he could keep it...No! Everyone was in danger including the castle. With his pockets fuller than full, the fourteen year old grabbed an armful of coins and mixed his own coin he had kept with the rest and then ran after Maddie to the entrance hall, trying not to drop anything.

Every time the door opened, Nettie was afraid it was an Inferi - but thankfully, it was just Dorian and Professor Kennedy. She felt herself finally relax as Kennedy undid the charm around the treasure, providing them a window to grab as much treasure as they could. This time, Nettie didn't even THINK about pocketing a single piece of it. This treasure was going to go back where it came from and they were going to be DONE with this!
Nodding, she JUMPED as soon as the charm was released. Wrapping her tiny hands around as much treasure as she could, she grabbed a bunch of the coins and then took off towards the Entrance Hall, taking care to make sure she didn't drop any.

"GET IT, GET IT, GET IT ALL!" she said, chanting mostly to herself as she ran back into the Chamber. They'd made a mess of things, what with them rushing along and shoving the treasure into every pocket they had. Dorian had used the extending charm on his pocket, which Maddie decided to do, as well. "Capacious Extremis!" she called out, pointing her wand toward her pocket.
She rushed forward and shoved a brooch and what felt like six bazillion coins into her pockets. "Are we supposed to bring these tapestries, too?" she asked. She stopped, coins dripping out of her hands, and looked up at the scenes before her. Something told her the Inferi army didn't want a reminder of that night. "Nahh," she said.
In all the chaos, she didn't realize she was still crying. A little tear escaped her eye and trickled onto the coin she was holding. She ignored it, sniffed back a few more tears, and then shoved the coin into her pocket. As she dashed off again, she wondered if fourth year would ever come for her.

Kalen nodded at Maddie as she spoke, he was glad she was okay, and he would make sure to send her to the healer later, Penelope was going to be very busy tonight, he smiled at the mention of the extension charm, one he knew rather well.
He waited until the students had filled their pockets with the treasure when he levitated the rest of the stash with his wand along with the tapestries, he didn’t fully know if they wanted them, but it couldn’t hurt to try!
“Maddie! When you get back out to the entrance hall, see if you can Accio any more coins, this might not be all of them!” He said as moved out of the chamber and back into the hall and started to run with the rest of the treasure levitating in front of him.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Dorian could actually feel the sweat trickling down the side of his face as he ran back in to the room. Or were it tears? He didn't even know what he was feeling at the moment. He usually stayed away from anything that would get his adrenaline pumping through his veins but he had no other choice now.
He looked like he had had too much coffee and his hands were even shaking as they grabbed whatever treasure he could find and shoved it in to his large pockets. All of this was done on automatic pilot, as if someone else was controlling his body.
He didn't even hear Maddie's question about the tapestries but he did hear that he laughed at that. Why on earth did he laugh?! It had been a normal question! Adrenaline had finally gone to his head. And then he was dashing out of the room again and running back to the entrance hall.
He was going to THROW this treasure at them stupid inferi!
