That's how you know they like you
The old stone walls, strong though they were, creaked and groaned as snow piled on the roofs like marshmallow fluff. A chill passed through the halls as students burst through doors and out into the bright sun, light dancing on the white powder.
From a tower window, it was easy to watch. A young girl, wrapped tightly in Ravenclaw blue, fumbled with her mittens before discarding them, opting to pack the snow with her own hands. Soft flesh now red and raw, she tiptoed through drifts to a young Hufflepuff, unseen, grinning mischievously.
Winter had returned to Hogwarts, once more.

So that's where they go
Tucked away in a corner there is a cupboard. It is small, unassuming, and goes virtually unnoticed though people pass it every day. Elegant in its simplicity, despite the layer of dust and cobwebs from years and years, it is locked.
The cupboard of the lost socks.
Stripped socks, dotted socks, hole-y socks. Thin socks, thick socks, smelly socks.
How it is that the cupboard and socks came to be there, no one will be able to tell you. But sometimes, late at night, a figure will steal away from the kitchen and open the door. Taking, or leaving, unknown.

It must be genetic
“What. is. THAT?” A young Albus stopped short, staring into the forest as two bright lights drew near.
“No way,” James whispered.
He and Albus had stolen out of the castle for a nighttime stroll. That they had done so together was unusual, though the that they had done so at all was very... Potter.
“That's the car dad and Uncle Ron crashed into the Willow! I'm gonna go look!” James hurried off as Albus hesitated, casting a look back at the castle, before following.
It seemed Hogwarts would once again bear witness to a Potter adventure.

Mother
If Hogwarts could speak, she would tell you of the feasts. Of the smells that waft up from the kitchen long before the Headmaster begins to speak. Of the palpable excitement that exudes from students as they enter. Of what a great joy it has been to watch them.
If Hogwarts could speak, she would tell you that alma mater isn't just a phrase; it is her sacred charge. And she would tell you that she has sometimes failed in it.
But today, as a new class awaits, she would tell you of the feast, waiting just beyond those doors.

Is it an insult if you don't understand it?
“Yodel-ae-hee-hoo!” The sound ricocheted off stone walls, glancing off banisters, and cascading from the towers down to the deepest dungeon.
“Why is it always our bloody portrait,” Ron muttered, somewhere on the ground floor, the off-key wailing having offended his ears.
“It could be worse, Ron,” Hermione said grinning as the yodels continued to echo past them.
“Oh yeah, tell me how it could possibly be worse.”
“You could be a Ravenclaw.”
“Yeah, and how'd that be worse than this?” Ron scowled looking toward the stairs.
“You'd never be able to get in.”

| Granddaddy Ravenclaw | | Jermione Granger Number picked by Jools. Thanks! Drabble #6, Theme #60 Joke
Witness to a number of things
A figure lurked in the shadows, unseen. It wasn't terribly hard. The castle provided all manner of nooks, crannies and shadows. All of them ripe for mischief. If you'd asked that figure he'd say it was as if Hogwarts made those spots for him. Whenever he needed a corner to dive into, there one was. They had an understanding, he and the castle; they both liked a good joke.
Lining up the dungbombs across the threshold of Snape's office, the figure slunk back to wait for the door to open and the smell to rise, the walls the only witnesses.

Some things never change
Tiberius shivered. The dark and damp of the Hogwarts dungeons seeped into his bones as he waited. The ceilings hung low, the room feeling increasingly claustrophobic. A heart pounding out of fear or anticipation would echo cruelly off the walls - walls that had seen detentions from the most severe to the most absurd. Tiberius was unsure which kind this would be.
Drips of water falling steadily from the ceiling kept his focus as he waited, interrupted finally, by the fall of footsteps that he'd been dreading.
“Professor Pryce? I'm here for my detention.”
“Alright, Dexter. This way.”

| Granddaddy Ravenclaw | | Jermione Granger Requested by Jen, who asked that I write it *for* Erin. Drabble #8, Theme #93 Chicken
Clumsy from the Start
Moonlight danced on the snowdrifts, an eerie quiet having fallen over the grounds as castle windows went dark. But if you stood in one of those windows, and squinted, you would have seen the small shape of a girl rushing frantically across the grounds. A bit harder and you'd see why.
She was chasing a chicken.
Silently, she bounded over drifts, getting ever closer, until her foot caught clumsily on a pumpkin, hidden by snow. As she landed face-first in a drift, feet in the air, a shrill voice broke the silence.
“Nymphadora Lovegood, what are you doing?”
Busted.

Family Tradition
It seemed Hogwarts wouldn't be Hogwarts without a Potter and a Weasley making trouble. Lucky for Albus, Rose had inherited her mother's smarts, which made their mischief infinitely easier.
Students spread out on familiar purple sleeping bags, another emergency requiring a night in the Great Hall. Rose and Albus were sitting together, Rose's teddy bear between them, casting color-change charms around the room.
“Widde Weasley baby has a widdle beaaar” Malfoy sneered, pointing.
Looking up, wicked smile on her lips, Rose cast another charm, thinking pink.
“Nice pajamas, Malfoy,” Albus called out, grinning wickedly, laughter filling the room.

| Granddaddy Ravenclaw | | Jermione Granger Professor Pryce returns! Tegz asked me what I thought he'd teach, so here that is. The drabble presupposes a number of things, not least of which is that Tibi gets over his fear of big animals and heights... so, let's consider this one alt!universe for now. Drabble #10, Theme #7 Care of Magical Creatures
Pay it forward
Tiberius had a ritual. The day that students were to arrive, he would go to his office and review his lesson plans one final time, before heading to the stables.
Wings beating beneath him, Tiberius soared over the grounds, reveling in the rushing wind and the panoramic views of the grounds he loved so much. As they circled, the lights of the first year boats came into view. The COMC professor smiled, as he reached down and caressed the abraxan. There would be a baby, soon.
And someone down there, skimming lightly across the water, would get to name her.

| Granddaddy Ravenclaw | | Jermione Granger Drabble #11, Theme #97 Dictionary
Usefulness is subjective
Nestled between 7 Easy Steps to Speaking The Language of Love and 999 Words to Impress your Professor, the large tome never stood a chance. 839 Useless Spells: A Dictionary had sat on the shelf untouched for decades, generations of students coming and going, studying and... not.
That was, until one day, a tiny child reached up, wrapped his hand around the thick, cracked binding and took it down. Finally!
Sneezing, he dusted off the book and considered it a moment. Then, with an unceremonious thud, he dropped the book and stepped up onto it, streeeeaatchhhhiiiing for the highest shelf.

Sharing is most certainly not caring
“Dexter, don't!”
Cole ran, dress robes hitched in his hands, across the grounds, away from the rampaging Hufflepuff. Through the courtyard, down the pathway, around the hut and the pumpkin patch, frantic.
Finally out of breath, Cole stopped at the edge of the lake, turning to face Dexter, hands up in surrender.
“Isn't” *heave* “my” *gasp* “fault.” Cole bent at the waist, coughing, his hands on his knees.
“YOU TOOK MY GIRLFRIEND TO THE DANCE, YOU RUFFLE-Y TWIT.”
Without warning, and without remorse, Dexter shoved; Cole emerged moments later, sputtering, dress robes wet and ruined.

Too much of a good(?) thing
“Ow.” Dexter shot up, feeling as if he'd just been slapped in the face with...? a wet fish of some sort? He'd fallen asleep on a bench? Looking around groggily, he realized he was on the grounds. A smear of chocolate betrayed the cause.
Sugar rush. Sugar crash.
Sitting up straight, Dexter rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand, before pressing palms to eyes. A giggle from a nearby bush startled him, but he quickly dismissed it.
Meanwhile, Cole hid, carefully opening boxes, preparing for an assault of chocolate frogs. If Dexter wanted sugar, he'd get it.

| Granddaddy Ravenclaw | | Jermione Granger Last of three Dexter / Cole for now. Drabble #14, Theme #86, Daring
Best 5 minutes of his life, those first
Two boys huddled together behind the bench, finalizing the details of their daring escape to Hogsmeade.
“Ok, you go first,” one whispered.
“Why?”
“Because I said so.” Slightly louder.
“And why do you get to say so.”
“I'm older.” Wasn't it obvious?
“By like, FIVE minutes.”
“Still older!” Truth.
“COLE!”
“Dexter...” Exasperation.
Suddenly, the Hufflepuff launched himself at his Ravenclaw brother, bowling them both over, landing awkwardly on the ground, pinning Cole beneath him.
Dexter grinned evilly to himself. Cole might be the older brother... but he was still the winner.

| Granddaddy Ravenclaw | | Jermione Granger With acknowledgment that I find actual haiku really wonderful and that this is a poor attempt at mimicking that structure. Drabble #15, Theme #25, Sorting Hat
So... where'd the Sorting Hat spend break this year...
Perched on the stool, most ceremoniously, the Sorting Hat began its yearly ritual. But not song... haiku?
On the shelf, a hat
of lineage most noble
watches years fly by.
Brought out for one day,
a day both cherished and feared.
On this stool, judgment.
My brim has rested
Upon those most righteous, yes.
Also those most foul.
Lo, from the time of
Gryffindor, thus goes the tale.
I decided fate.
.
No more, I beg you.
Separation makes for strife.
To sort is to hurt.
This year, I will not
your future is up to you.
Freedom, not decree.

“Cap--”
“NO. No more until I'm done.” The Fat Lady crossed her arms and glared at the offending Gryffindors. “I'm giving a Christmas concert for the portraits! So, excuse me...”
But as she gestured grandly, it was clear to everyone but her: the other frames were empty.

As it has always been
“Albus, where are we going?”
“Shh, just keep up.”
The first years slunk through the halls, though it was probably unnecessary. No one had paid them much mind and it was early enough that they would not incur the wrath of the staff. And yet, they slipped down the hall, and raising a finger, Albus tickled a pear and they slipped through the wall. Albus turned and gestured to the kitchen, proudly.
With a loud crack, a house elf appeared before them, a tray of baked goods balanced in one hand.
“Ah, Master Dumbledore. Master Doge. Cookie?”

| Granddaddy Ravenclaw | | Jermione Granger For Jools Drabble #18, Theme #5 Astronomy
Soon
The young Hufflepuff leaned out the window of the Astronomy tower, staring out at the grounds. They'd planned to meet here and actually get to talk. The alley and the train had just been too busy and the summer had been long. Too long.
Tapping his fingers against his cheek, he thought about the letters stashed in his trunk and looked down at the gift wrapped around his wrist.
Red sparks flew past Lorcan's head and out into the night. Lexi. Smiling, the boy turned around...
He woke up, then, and stared at the ceiling. Just a few more weeks.

Well, now you can test it...
“Owwwwwww! Merlin's.. OW.” Ron hopped about the potions lab on one foot, grabbing at the other, wincing. A pewter cauldron lay on the floor, tipped on its side, a sticky blue puddle growing larger on the floor. The clanging still echoed in his ears, drowned out only by his own mutterings.
“Honestly, Ronald,” a voice floated in from the hall, before Hermione entered, shaking her head.
Picking up the cauldron with gloved hands, she siphoned up the spilled potion with her wand. “What were you brewing, anyway?”
Ron grumbled, now seated, rubbing his foot.
“Pain-relief potion.”
