All announcements pertaining to classes, homework assignments, quidditch tryouts and any other important school events shall be posted here! Want to help Hufflepuff defend the title as House Cup Champions? Look no further than here (or the Hufflepuff Herald) for assignments in which you can rack up those yellow diamonds.
Confused about an assignment or something that happened in a lesson? Why not ask the Professor in charge or perhaps an older student?
Note: Any Hufflepuff may post in this thread, but please remember that this is for official school events only. No personal notices please.
For your convenience, only current upcoming classes, classes in session, and homework posts will be in this thread (aka posts will be deleted when they are no longer relevant). It is also a good idea to SUBSCRIBE to this thread and all class threads to make sure that you are always up to date!
C'mon Badgers!!! No time to waste; let's take the lead! General Homework Submission Guidelines for EACH Subject can be found here, as well as in each subject's rule thread.

Potions Year-long Activity! Want to earn a chance to work with Professor Culloden privately and learn some cool potions? Want to be recommended to the most distinguished potions community? This is your chance!
All you have to do is brewing a Un-Felix Un-Felicis potion that you can also use against your enemies! It is the exact opposite of Felix Felicis - causes a complete lack of luck. If you are interested, do not waste any more time but head to the Potions Lab right away, and begin brewing! The deadline is March 15. For the recipe, please look below. For any questions, visit or send an owl to me.
Text Cut: Recipe
a litre of goat milk
1 strand of thestral mane
bicorn horn
full, undamaged mussel shell
one black cat's fur
caterpillar
13 rose thorns from 13 different roses (plucked ripe from the branches)
Pre-heat the cauldron to 150 celcius degrees
Put one litre of goat milk
Add the thestral mane
Wait for two hours
Put out the fire and wait for it to cool down
Crush the bicorn horn into a fine powder in the meantime and add it once the potion is cool enough for you to touch
Check point: it should be cool in maximum 15 minutes
With a wooden stick, stir it five times clockwise, four times counter clockwise, three times clockwise, two times counter clockwise and once clockwise.
Light a fire and bring it to maximum. Let it burn for a full week. Make sure the fire is always at maximum.
Clean the mussel shell gently, make sure there is no moss on it. open it, remove the mussel itself and clean its inside too, then add into the cauldron after a week is up.
Put out the fire and wait for one Moon cycle
Check point: the colour should be silver
Sprinkle half of the fur
With a metal stick, stir vigorously 13 times counter clockwise
Sprinkle the other half of the fur
Stir slowly 13 times counter clockwise
Check point: it should smell like your least favourite flower
Wait for a week
Slice the caterpillar into five equal pieces and add the one by one
Swirl your wand slowly over the cauldron while telling an event you think is unfortunate (the number of swirls doesn't matter, just don't stop until the end of the story)
Light a low fire and wait for 13 days
Get 13 rose thorns from 13 different roses in the gardens and add them all at once
With a metal stick, stir once clockwise
Wait until it changes colour from green to brown
Label it and leave a vial it on the desk
Do NOT! try it without my consent.
If you have done everything correctly, it shouldn't smell or smoke. Its taste should not spoil the substances it is added.
OOC: This is this term's potions event! It is not obligatory. It is open to everyone. Most likely I will not award points, as this is something for character development and a bit of fun (if your character slipped some into his/her friend's cup? ).
I want at least 5 posts in the Potions Laboratory and 2 posts on the grounds collecting rose thorns. The OOC deadline is November 5. You don't have to notify me of your participation, but please title your posts in the lab with "Potions Activity". You don't have to PM your posts in the lab, but you should PM the posts on the grounds. Instead of double-posting, you CAN edit your next post into the previous one if no one has posted in the lab in 3 days. Otherwise, please do not edit unless it is YOUR mistake and not your character's.
I hope you have fun with this! As always, you can PM any and all questions.

There are two options for this homework. Please only complete ONE of them for credit. Doing more than one will not earn you double the house points. An addition 5 points of extra credit is available to outstanding efforts and creativity.
Both options are in preparation for our end of term field trip to the National Space Centre due to my shortcomings as your Astronomy professor recently. Consider it a bit of self study as we have other topics to discuss in the coming weeks.
OOC: you do not HAVE to complete the homework to participate in the field trip!
⌦ option one (worth 10 pts)
Create a timeline of the history human of space exploration. Your timeline should include at least 5 events that you believe to be especially important and please include a brief description (just a few sentences is enough) of why you think so.
For example (super basic):
February 20, 1947 - first animals into space (fruit flies). Helped prove that living things from Earth can survive spaceflight.
You may present your timeline in either written or drawing form. Just keep in mind that the more effort and thoughtfulness you put into your work, the better the reward.
OOC: Please be sure not to just copy paste answers from the internet or from the lesson for this should you select this option. I will be checking. Likewise, if you opt to draw (either by hand or with a graphics program) a timeline, please be sure it is your original work and not just a copy-paste of a pre-existing timeline on the internet.
⌦ option two (worth 10 pts)
My original intent with the lesson was that each of you would get to create your own "signature" space food (either in tube of freeze dried form). Since that plan went out the window, you may do it for homework.
Food in space has come a long way, but for you to appreciate the advances in science we will focus on the "vintage" forms of space food. Using the toothpaste tubes and box containers located outside my office, I want you to create two space food dishes. One in a purée form and the other freeze dried. The freeze dried one should be your own unique ice cream flavor while the purée is entirely up to you.
Spells you will find useful:
Francesco; wand movement: point at food; effect: turns a food intem into a purée duratus
Ratus Ausicceso; wand movement: slow upwards flick from the wrist; effect: freeze dries a food item
Bonus points if you get someone to taste your creation before dropped them in the box outside my office!
You may include your recipe in written form along with your creations if you wish.
OOC: This is an RP-centric assignment and requires at least 4 posts to be considered for full credit (2 posts for each food item). There is no specific location you need to use for this option. Tasks included should be the actual making (meaning mixing of ingredients and any real cooking that may be necessary) of the food item, spell casting to modify the food, and placing it in the appropriate containers - and having someone taste what you made if you wish . You do NOT need to RP picking up or dropping off anything outside of Professor Flamsteed's office.
Please PM me with the links to all your RP posts. You may, as the IC instructions state, include the recipes for your space food.
⌦ this assignment is due November 2nd @ noon GMT
Please be sure you have read through Astronomy & Space Navigation and paid particular attention to the rules regarding homework submission. Late homework submissions will not be accepted. Any questions, concerns, or what have you can be sent to me via PM.

{ Muggle Studies Homework One }
PART A: Question and Answers (5points)
1. What part of the camera adjusts the lens opening?
2. What type of camera develops a print instantaneously after taking the picture?
3a. What is one advantage to film processing over digital?
3b. One disadvantage?
4. Name three possible uses for photography in different careers? (hint/example: what would law enforcement officers use it for?)
PART B: RP Exercise (up to 10 points)
Your task is to transfer the negatives you developed in class to prints using the steps outlined below. All the equipment you need is available in the technology center. But minimum 5 RP posts and simply link to each
Text Cut: Negatives to Prints Process
* Use a scanner attached to the computer in the technology center
* Make sure the computer and scanner are both turned on.
* On the lid of the scanner when you open it, you should see a slot to insert a sheet of up to five negatives; it is embellished to resemble a film strip. You may need cut your negative strip as you cannot develop more than 5 images at a time; just be careful to not cut the actual image.
* Blow any dust from the negative and be careful not to leave fingerprints or smudges (so as we held it from its edges in class, i would continue to do so in handling it)
* Insert the negative to scan into the slot with the shiny side facing the glass of the scanner.
* Close the lid and press the button to scan it into the computer.
* A menu screen should pop up onto the computer monitor; select the option to print negatives in the scanner monitor. Resolution should be set to 300 ppi and type of digital file, JPEG.
* Complete the scanning process from your computer, clicking 'scan' on the menu, which will create a digital image saved onto the computer that you can elect to print out as a hard copy.
* Repeat for a minimum of 5 pictures
Optional questions about part B (for an extra 5 points):
1. Did your pictures come out? If not, what do you think you might have done wrong?
2. What part of the process did you like best? Like least?
3. Describe the images developed OR provide a graphic (must be your own creation) of the pictures developed.
Follow the Homework Guidelines. Homework is due November 11th by 11:59pm EST, ALTHOUGH I will accept it late till the end of the term for half-credit. PM/VM me with any questions.

Ancient Runes Lesson II
When: 10/29th Where: Ancient Runes Classroom What: Bring your manners first and foremost, your notes, your dragonhide gloves, and your wands. Who: Everyone cool enough to take this class.
Referring to the Being, Beast, or Spirit that you chose in class and reflecting on your experiences taking on that particular persona, create an argument in support for or against your chosen creature's placement with the Ministry's classification system.
Do you feel that their current placement is fair and beneficial or do you think somewhere else is a better fit? Why?
Think about particular rights, protections, privileges that your creature may or may not receive in that category or a different one along with any disadvantages or discriminations when creating your argument
Think about how the categories and their definitions changed over the years, including the various disputes that have occurred
This needs to be written in three well-thought out paragraphs of at least 5 sentences each, supported by facts, personal opinions, and class experience.
Due: November 12, 11:59 pm EST
Worth: 15 points
OOC - If you were unable to participate in the activity portion of class, you can still complete the homework. Simply choose something categorized as Being, Beast, or Spirit as the topic of your homework and follow the above instructions. If you were not in class at all, please refer to the class progression posts in the first post of History of Magic Lesson 2 to better understand the class discussion.

You may only pick one of the following options. If you choose to do both you won't be credited for either of them. Each one is worth 15 points. If you have any question do not hesitate to ask me via PM.
Option one:
Make a drawing of two different plants in two conditions. One when each plant looks healthy and the other when it looks unwell for a reason of your choosing from what we learned during class. Pick a different illness for each one of the plants. With your drawing, include a few lines describing what is wrong with each plant and what should be done to fix it.
ooc: You may use any program to draw; paint, photoshop, a paper..etc. it only matters that it is not snatched from somewhere on the internet. Upload the picture to your personal photobucket or tinypic or any other site and PM it to me. Make sure you read how to submit a homework in the rules.
Option two:
The Greenhouse was full of the sick plants like you have noticed and still is. Professor Walton requests help to treat and diagnose the rest which are still in the Second Greenhouse that will be reserved for this purpose. Andrew will be there to observe and aid if needed. You know where to find the equipment, the cupboards are big enough to be seen. Like in the lesson, make a log and stick a tag with your name on it on each plant you treat.
ooc: You will need four quality posts to get full credit in which your charrie treats a minimum of two plants. And you may only RP it at the Greenhouses thread. Check the lesson for details on how to do the treating, there are links in the first post to help you navigate. Links to the posts are to be PMed to me. Make sure you read how to submit a homework in the rules.
Have fun!
