A large number of floor-to-ceiling bookcases fill up the library, creating aisles upon aisles of books available for students to read and browse. To make finding books for all years a little easier Mr Kitridge has divided the bookshelves into sections like romance, suspense, crime, history, plants and fungi etc.
To return books just walk up to the appropriate shelf and hold up the book. The gripping charm in place on the shelves will take a hold of the book. When you feel a tug on the book let go and the book will fly up and find its right place amongst the other books on the shelves. When retrieving a book you can use the sliding ladders or if you feel confident with your magic you can use a simple accio charm to retrieve the book you want.
In front of each aisle there is small set of desks which students can use to complete homework, copy notes, take book references or chat. Keep your voices down and be mindful of falling books and other students accessing books around you.
Having spent an entire summer away from the Hogwarts library and its vast selection of resources, Daxton was keen to get back there at the earliest opportunity once he was back at school. He had been working on all manner of things in his free time at home, relying mainly on the information he had already read and committed to memory, but nothing was quite the same as referencing and cross-referencing actual physical books, and being surrounded by thousands more.
Though he was very tall for his age, especially after his most recent growth spurt (which had also left him rather lanky and thin), he was clearly not tall enough to view the books on the highest shelves. However, he did not want to use the sliding ladders either, finding that it would be much too easy for someone to push the ladder so it slid away while he was up at the top, and feeling that the ladder would easily succumb to any sort of destructive spellwork while he was using it, sending him crashing to the ground. And Daxton knew that there would be plenty of people liable to try such a thing.
So, in an aisle of books with a section devoted to magical theory, Daxton instead climbed up onto one of the desks to peruse the higher-up shelves. He kept an ear out for anyone who might approach, ready to leap away, should someone cast a spell at him or the desk he stood upon. Gradually, he started making his way down the aisle, scanning through the titles on the bookshelves and occasionally bringing out a book that looked like it might be of some use.

What did Mason love more than anything? Books. Where were books stored? A Library. And Hogwarts had one of the best Libraries that she had ever seen. Plus, she might even stumble across some sort of adventure like she had last year. Not that she wanted to brew another Bathroom-Potion, cause that sucked. A lot.
This wasn't the time for reminiscing, though. Mason had work to do and books to read. But she had to find those books first. She wanted to get into that Spirit-Room thingy and that weird ghost-shield wasn't making it easy. She wanted to know why it was there and if it was possible to blast a hole through it. . . she was going to get in there, one way or another.
Her thoughts were cut short, however. When she turned the corner to where the Study-desks were, there was someone occupying it, but not nearly in the way that they were meant to be used. He was has standing on one. . . why?
Mason raised an eyebrow, "What the hell are you doing?" She asked the lanky boy, crossing her arms as well, "You know that there are ladders for a reason, right?" So that you don't have to clamper around on tables like an idiot, duh.

Having pulled out an interesting looking book on the topic of the physics of magic, Daxton had begun scanning through the contents and then the first few pages, trying to determine if this would be of any use. However, no sooner had he done that than did he hear a set of footsteps stop nearby, and a voice floating up to him.
Looking up, Daxton found the source of the voice immediately, in the form of a second year Slytherin girl, standing down on the floor not too far away. Though Daxton was not a social creature in any sense of the word, he made it his business to know as much as he could about everyone else who lived in the castle. This one's name was Stevens, he knew, though he had no first name for her as yet. Frustrating.
In regards to her question, Daxton simply responded with a none-too-subtle roll of his eyes, and went back to his search for useful texts. Those were some stupid questions, questions that did not even deserve the effort it took to produce the answers that Stevens wanted. What he was doing was obvious, and any idiot could work out what the ladders were for.
Now alert to the fact that there was someone else in his vicinity, Daxton kept her within the range of sight and picked out another book from a shelf right at eye-level.

What!? Did he seriously just ROLL HIS EYES at her? What.A.Butt-face.
And he didn't even have the common courtesy to answer her questions. . . they had been rhetorical in a sense, but still! And Mr. Jerk decided that even though Mason was STANDING RIGHT HERE, he was going to go about his business as if she weren't.
"Oh, excuse me, Sir Jerk-face. I didn't know that I was in the presence of royalty." As far as Mason was concerned, the only people that had the right to ignore her were the Royal-Family and she was pretty sure that this peasant wasn't a Royal, "I'm talking to you. Are you deaf or do you just think that you're too good to answer me?" She glowered up at him, her ears turning pink from her frustration.
She wondered if this guy had a tongue? For a second Mason thought that maybe he was a mute. But then again, how would he be able to cast spells? She didn't know of any Hogwarts-Student that could cast non-verbal spells, and she was pretty sure that she would have known if there was a mute-kid at school. . . maybe he had Silencio cast on him? Or maybe he was just a jerk?
He must have been an older student, cause Mason didn't recognize him at all- wait, wasn't this the kid that had been so sulky and withdrawn at Duelling Club? The one that hated Hawt-Hirsh for some (probably stupid) reason? She was pretty sure that he was the one that had gotten detention in the last few weeks of school. . . What was that guy's name again?
"Aren't you that Dalton Prax-guy?" She doubted that he was going to answer the question. . . jerk.
The first week of term was key, Dalton had discovered, if you wanted to secure books from the library. Although the shelves held multiple copies, he knew that a lot of people wanted them, and he also knew that he needed them. If he wanted to pass exams and get qualifications and get a job and actually make something of himself when he left this... Place. It was a recent decision, and one he hadn't made lightly, but seeing his friends so determined down their career paths had really given him a kick.
And it didn't help that a lot of the required or 'recommended' reading happened to be out of his budget. He could deal with old editions if that was all the library had, because they were always kept in good condition, he couldn't help but reflect ad he trawled the shelves searching.

For someone with the most Ravenclaw of Ravenclaw parents, Charlotte Kettleburn did not spend all that much time in the library. When she did find her way in there or was either for social time or to do her own non-homework research. Preferrably both.
Today she wanted OWL-level spell books with stuff in them she could maybe use for duelling. Also today social time would happen TOO because hello new friend. New friends who is a boy and older and therefore a good contender for her list.
The list that she was working on. Her ultra top secret list.
Mayyybe she could sneak up on him? Char crept closer and tried to hold back a giggle.
"Rahh!"

With one book under his arm, Dalton flicked through a second book, noting the contents, before swapping the two and letting the other lift back onto the shelf. He then moved across slightly, wondering if there was any way he was actually going to pass his OWLs this year, because it wasn't looking likely. Especially not Transfiguration, he thought, pulling down a few more heavy books.
It was as he was trying to adjust his grip on them that Dalton heard Charlotte. With a short exclamation under his breath, the books went tumbling to the ground as he turned around in surprise.
Oh. "Hey, Char." He managed, dropping down to pick up the books from the floor.

As he made to pull another book off of the shelf, Daxton glanced down at the now ranting and riled up girl. He thought her amusing, and made a mental note that this particular Slytherin seemed to have some sort of entitlement complex, and that defying it was a very good way to annoy her. Helpful information indeed.
So, continuing to ignore her ranting, Daxton looked at the next book he had selected. It was one on the mechanics of non-verbal magic, one that he had read before and could easily remember the details of, but thought he might like to read again. All the while, he stayed very much aware of the fact that there was a very easily and quickly angered girl nearby, and a Slytherin at that, who might very well like to get her own back at any moment. He kept a very close watch on her in the periphery of his vision.
The butchering of his name, however, led Daxton to look at the girl once more, wondering if she had him mixed up with someone else. Dalton Prax? There was a Dalton at the school, but Daxton was fairly certain his surname was something else. 'Dalton Prax' sounded similar enough to Daxton's own name that it occurred to him that the girl was, perhaps, simply a little dim.
What to do, though? Agree, and lead her to believe that that was his real name, eventually making her seem even more like an idiot? Or disagree, and lead her to believe he was someone else entirely, as it seemed the girl had recognised Daxton's reputation or his appearance before he had so much as hinted at his own name. It was a tricky decision.
Adding the book he had taken from the shelf to the one he already held, Daxton appeared to consider the question for a long moment, as though he might answer it. Indeed, he opened his mouth, appearing for all the world as if he were about to say something... and then simply turned back to the bookshelf - careful not to turn his back to the girl - and resumed his perusing of the bookshelves as though nothing had happened.

Heeeeheeeee. Charlotte giggled and knelt down to help with the books. The least she could do since she'd successfully startled him.
"Got you." She said with some satisfaction, and examined the book of his she'd just grabbed from the floor. "You like to study? This is a lot of books." The boring kind mostly. Like proper learning books, not fun or duelworthy spell books. "You don't look like the sort of person who likes to study." So, that was INTERESTING. "What are you studying for? Fun or because you have to?"

"Yeah, you got me." Dalton couldn't help but roll his eyes as he closed a few books that had come open during their fall. He offered an awkward smile as she bent down to help him, though, debating as to whether he should stop her because he could do it himself, but actually refraining from doing so. After all, it had been her fault. And he appreciated the help.
Or something.
Straightening up and putting a few of the books down on a nearby table, Dalton took the book from Char's hand and frowned down at the cover. "That's because I'm not the kind of person who likes to study." People who liked to study - and he would have doubted their existence if his friend wasn't so persistent - we're completely crazy, in his opinion. "It's a means to an end." That was easier than saying he was a bit stupid when it came to school work, right?

She didn't mind helping. Least she could do since she was the cause of all the books falling. But still, worth it! His face! Heeeeheeeee.
Standing up and passing the book over, Charlotte followed the direction of his gaze with her own and examined the cover.
"I don't like to study either. At least, I don't like to study things that I HAVE to study, but I don't mind doing research for things that I WANT to learn. Like right now I'm looking for spells I could maybe practice and get good at for dueling." Which was why she was here where the OWL books were. And also the reason her actual homework wasn't exactly finished.
"But studying IS less dumb when you aren't studying alone." HINT HINT, DALTON. She would TOTALLY be his study buddy.

Somehow, Charlotte's admission that she didn't like to study didn't shock Dalton: something about the cheerful Gryffindor just did not scream 'studious type'. He offered her a brief smile and readjusted his grip on the stack in his arms, before changing his mind and motioning her over to a nearby table, where he could now put the books down.
And, at her next comment, riffle through them slightly.
"Try this one," he managed, pulling out a fifth year level Defence Against the Dark Arts spell book and glancing over the cover before offering it to her. See, he'd so caught the comment about dueling and noticed that she was in the OWL level section, and he wasn't egotistical enough to think she was there just because she'd seen him. "I've never actually studied... not alone."

Oooooooooh! That was helpful of him. Charlotte lit up when he selected a useful book for her and went all grabby hands, taking it and immediately opening it somewhere in the middle, not being one to start with the table of contents or be particularly methodical about a thing.
"Thanks!" Hopefully she would find something good in it, something useful. Something with which she could impress Hirsch. And then subsequently be able to open a dialogue and, because she was an excellent friend, lay some groundwork for Chloe.
Oh and also win duels. Many duels. That would also be very cool.
And as for Dalton not studying NOT alone, Char tipped her head to one side, cheerfully setting her hair bouncing.
"Well then you're in luck because here I am!" He could study with her, she would even try really hard to keep him (mostly) on task! Maybe. For a while.
"And you should do that more, by the way." The smiling thing. It was nice. Another point for him on the list.

Elsa kept brushing her fingers at the book's back, grinning to her self overtime one of them gave her a light shock of magic. Magic books were such wonderful things. She kept her gaze strained on the titles, looking for something that could help her with the book of Mysteria to help with hers, Mason and Kitty's mission. But so far none of these seemed to be capable of giving her some insight.
She sighed remembering her uncle's evasive tone when she asked him if he knew something. Of course he did. And he was not up to sharing. Or maybe thought it was a business she had no right sticking her nose in. She kept making her way between the bookshelves now crouching down to see some of the lower shelves properly.

An eyebrow raised slightly in amusement as Dalton watched her open the book randomly. Although he wasn't one to read a book from start to finish - rather, using the index and contents to find the relevant information so that he could do as little reading as possible - he was slightly surprised at the unorthodox approach. On reflection of Charlotte, though, he couldn't help but wonder why: she wasn't exactly orthodox in herself.
"Welcome," he found himself saying with a little nod. His eyebrows didn't resume their natural position for long, however, before he found Char saying that... Well, was she saying that she would study with him? His look of confusion settled into one of doubt before he responded, though. "I... I'm.. Er, I'm not sure how good of a study partner I'd be..." You know, there was a reason he kept to himself in lessons. And a reason why people avoided him.
"Do what more?"

Azura was laying on the floor near one of the back bookshelves, her head was on her backpack and she had a book in her hand, but her purple eyes weren't exactly focusing on the words on the page.. She looked slightly distantly at the charms book and she sighed softly as she remembered the one that her mom had gotten her for dueling club..
She sighed again.. Wishing she could tell her mom about the O she had gotten in potions!
Tears started to come to her eyes for a moment.. And she closed them quickly.. Trying to push away the sad thoughts.

Not his one.. not this one either...ups! compenetrated in the task at hand, Elsa did not see where she was going and bumped knees with someone else laying low. Literally. "Azura!" she exclaimed, looking over her friend whose eyes were closed. Oh boggart, she was probably sneaking a nap in the library and I totally woke her up! Elsa thought concerned, chewing on her lip.
She dropped herself on the ground next to her friend's knees and patted her on one of them as if it was a kitten "How have you been? It's been ages since we hang out together."How is Wes? I haven't seen him around either!!? - part of her brain screamed. She kept that part quiet.

Azura was trying to keep from bawling right in the middle of the library when she felt someone bump into her! Her eyes shot open as she looked up to see who was there.. "Oh! Else." She said as she slowly started to push her way upwards.. "How's it going?" She asked her..
She smiled a little as she felt her friend pet her knees and she shook her head a little bit. "Yeah, it has been! I haven't seen you since a week or so before term started." Right before the world as she knew it ended.. "I'm okay, how about you." She had told the lie so often, she was sort of getting used to it..

"Exactly, we were all together then, then I went for some napkins and when I returned you were all gone!" Elsa commented, pouting as she crossed her legs under her body. At that time she felt a little.. sad, thinking they might have all gone else where and forgot about her and that had hurt. But she was over it now, she wandered the streets a few more moments, met Mason and all. It turned out ok, didn't it? Too bad she never got to hang with Wes that summer.
Azura said she was ok, and even though she seemed so, four limbs, two eyes, one nose and all, she didn't really feel ok. Just like she didn't seem ok back at their encounter in Diagon Alley. Elsa pulled her kneed up and hugged them, resting her chin on them. "I'm okay too. I think I've missed you?" she asked a little unsure. She wanted to ask what was bothering her, but didn't want to pry, so she settled that being a good friend ought to be enough. "Were you catching some sleep here in the library? I was looking for something rather.. mysterious!" she added with a whisper, proud of her own inside joke. Book os Mysteria, Mysterious, get it?

Azura looked down at Elsa as she spoke about that terrible, horrible, awful, no good, very bad day. "I'm sorry, I found my step dad and he had some.. Important news for my Aunt and Uncle so we had to leave right away." The small Ravenclaw explained as she gently picked at her shoes a bit, biting her lip. "We really didn't mean to leave you, it was an emergency." " She apologized again.. She hadn't even thought to owl Elsa.. She had passed out and then had woken up in her bed at her Aunts house.. That week has been a haze..
The funeral.. Family members discussing what to do with her.. Leaving for Hogwats.. The choke hold she had on her step father.. She wasn't sure if she would ever see him again, or what would happen to her now..
She hugged her knees to her as well as Elsa spoke.. She thought she had missed her? "Well I missed you." She said with a nod as she bit her lip at the other girls question.
"No, I was just thinking,. And oh! What book are you looking for? "

Elsa nodded as her friend spoke. That made sense. "It's fine, as long as it wasn't anything nothing serious." she said politely. That was what people were supposed to say wasn't it? Even though in this particular case Elsa had no idea how serious the matter had actually been. "How is Wes?" she asked, trying to sound nonchalant about it when in fact her heart felt like she had missed a step.
But then it was quickly picked up by Azura's words. She missed her too! Yeeeey! Still her friend looked sad. How could she possibly ask her what was wrong without making her uncomfortable?
Elsa scooted over closer to Azura and said in a low conspiratory voice "I'm not sure. I was looking for something that would help me with something Kitty told me about, you know Kitty?" she looked around making sure no one was listening to them "Have you heard of the book of Mysteria?" she asked her friend, her head leaning towards hers. If anyone walking in on them there was no doubt they were speaking of something forbidden or that could be frowned upon.

"Well I'm probably not all that good either, but we can try!" It could at least be fun and ALSO she could have more time to assess him for her LIST. All good things.
That decided, she turned on her heel and headed towards the tables, answering over her shoulder, "Oh, smile more, it's handsome."

Azura bit her lip a little as Elsa spoke and she wasn't sure how to say it wasn't serious.. She could tell her the truth and maybe she would understand, but she hadn't been in a talking mood much lately. Hence her laying down and attempting to shut out the world. She then grabbed onto the one thing she could.. Elsa's mention of Wes. "He's doing good." She said with a nod. "He was supposed to meet me here soon.. but I got here early." She said, hoping the pending arrival of her cousin would throw Else off the track of what happened earlier in the summer.
Azura looked at Elsa as she leaned in and started to speak, "Mmm, I know Kitty." She WAS her housemate after all. "What did she tell you about?" The Ravenclaw girl was curious now..
"The book of Mysteria?" Azura blinked her purple eyes.. "No.. I haven't heard of it.. What is it?" She asked curiously as the girl whispered. Was someone listening?

Right. Dalton nodded slightly. "Okay, we can try," he repeated, hesitating a little before following Charlotte over to the tables, his stack of books still clutched under his arm. He wasn't exactly sure how to feel about the whole, 'studying together' thing, because really, he wasn't sure he would be any good. He was terrible company most of the time.
But heck, on her head be it, yeah? It was her idea, right? He shook his head slightly, before forcing the corner of his mouth up into a half smile. "Er - thanks, Char." Cue feeling awkward. It was different when Kelly and Tim said it. They had boyfriends. They'd been friends for years.
The tips of his ears turned pink.
