Once you have followed Professor Tanner through the castle, out the front doors, and through the courtyard, you come to a small slab of concrete. Had that been there before? Next to this possibly new stretch of path you can find stacks of sidewalk chalk in almost every color of the rainbow.
Tiara stood next to one of these stacks. "Alright everyone, circle up and take a seat, please."
OOC: The activity is now closed. Thanks for playing!

What is this place?
Curiously Ariel looked at the weird thing on the ground. "What's that?" she asked before taking a seat. This wasn't looking for treasure, but maybe it would still turn out to be a really fun adventure.
Toby wasn't entirely sure where Tanner was going with this, but what he DID know was that that chalk was super colourful, and that concrete was just waiting to be drawn on and all prettied up. Taking his arm back from Soph now that the class had regrouped, as they were still technically in class and all, Toby took a seat by the Hufflepuff girl who was already settled and looked curiously between all the chalk and the professor.

Down a few flights of stairs and out the doors of the castle, they were soon near the courtyard and past it. until they came to an area Benny didn't think he had ever seen before. Probably something the woman cooked up just for the purpose that Professor Tanner had brought them outside in the first place. A little magic was great when one wanted to control and change one's environment on a whim.
Was that chalk?
Following the professor's instructions, the fourth year moved with the rest of the class until they had made it to the other part of the would-be circle or arch. Then he settled down on the ground, crossing his legs into an indian style position. Now what?

Were it not for the fact Alexa stopped questioning Hogwarts months ago, she might have been trying to figure exactly where the Professor was taking them. It wasn't necessarily somewhere she knew because well...where did the concrete structure come from...? And the path? No really, how had she not seen this place before--Op! There she went asking questions again. That wasn't meant to happen.
Once she was back to not questioning it, Lex took a seat in what was meant to be a circle maybe and waited for something else to happen.
No questions, none.

The ballerina gracefully followed the class outside and stopped when everybody else did so. She took a good look around before going to stand next to the Head Girl - she was in that leadership position for a reason, Agatha supposed - and taking a seat. The others should follow their lead and make a circle from the place they had sat, obviously.
Agatha was no prefect but she was sitting next to the Head Girl. Besides, she was Agatha Hapgood, people should just do whatever she did if they knew what was good.

Following along with the rest of class, Heather was puzzled when they stopped at a concrete slab. When did that appear? She didn't remember seeing any concrete here at Hogwarts before. Nope, it was all stone. She didn't even know wizards knew what concrete even was. And there was CHALK stacked beside the professor, which now she was itching to get her hands on. The chalk, of course, not the professor. Heather loved chalk and the feel of it and the smell....
She followed directions though and plopped down in the circle.

..... Was that chalk? Were they stopping here? Okay... Were they going to have to reduce numbers and write it all down in chalk. Because he could've sworn that she had promised no reducing would be going on and this totally defied that in so many ways. But they were taking a seat again? ... Uh, okay.
Looking around at the rest of the class, Zander opted to go take a seat next to Agatha. She was alright, but Simon liked her. And not just liked her, he liked her-liked her. And Zander did trust his friend's opinion sooo.... Yup. He was going to try this again, okay?

Zhenya had ventured out with the Professor and was surprised when they stopped. She could't remember that being there… And the colourful sticks on the ground, she wondered what they were for. Drawing, perhaps?
She listened to the professor and quickly took a seat, letting the sounds of nature and the smell of fresh air surround her.
Soph was ELATED to be outside for class and wished EVERY professor was nice enough to let them have it outside. Well, except for Thompson, who didn't have a choice but to have class outside for the most part.
She let go of Tobes' arm the moment they stepped outside, not wanting Tanner to give them any sort of looks when they all convened in one area, and Soph was... a little confused when they reached their destination. Had... this part always been there? No. Certainly not. She KNEW these grounds inside and out.
It was kind of cool that Tanner had planned ahead, wasn't it? And there was CHALK there. Ooooooo.
Taking a seat near Zander, she poked the boy in the side with a big grin and set her notes in her lap. READY FOR THE FUN.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeheeeeeeeeeeeee!
Outside! Outside! Outside! Outside! ... For the first time in, well, EVER... Arithmancy sounded like a subject he could get used to. Super used to. Especially if they did this outside thing more often. He liked working outside, it had been the only time he really tried at his English work in muggle school, when the teacher would let him sit outside and do his work on the path by the door.
Eagerly, Zeke hurried to find a spot in the circle around the slab thing, and waited for the lesson to continue. The chalk stuff looked pretty neat too. Were they going to draw? or just do their calculations on the paths?

Jasmine followed Professor Tanner and her classmates outside. When they reached their destination, Jasmine was a little surprised. First of all, they stopped at a patch of concrete that she didn't remember seeing before. Surely she would have noticed it, right?
As the students made a circle, Jasmine took her place. She had a flashback to her muggle childhood and felt like they were about to play Duck, Duck, Goose. Then she saw the sidewalk chalk and began to smile. Did hopscotch have anything to do with Arithmancy? Maybe they would get to draw pictures on the concrete like she used to do with her friends. Jasmine was intrigued. Whatever they were going to do, colored chalk could make it fun.

Angel followed the Professor and everyone else until they stopped, she wondered what they would be doing outside today. She suddenly realised there was chalk around, oh this was going to be fun. Now she had to sit down and wait to see what happened next.

The fact that they were heading outside was a GOOD sign. It meant that as kinda confusing and weird as the class had been -- he didn't know who half of those Muggles were -- there was the chance that they weren't gonna be cooped up in a classroom and expected to make some long calculations. Even if the fifth year liked to input his own opinion into his explanations.
So, Grayson followed Tanner and the rest of the class outside and towards the grounds. He didn't have any questions until the group came to a stop near a new piece of land that he hadn't seen before. How did he know? Because he was SURE that he would have remembered a place like this if he had been here before. Unless he was THAT oblivious.
Nah!
And wait. WAIT. Hold the freaking phone!
WAS THAT CRAYOLA?????
Oh MAN, were they gonna be drawing? Decorating this piece of concrete? He wasn't good at that. Casting a somewhat wary glance at the chalk, Grayson moved to an empty spot and sat down. Uh huh. Curious. He was very curious.

Ian followed the class out into the courtyard. When he got out there, the professsor directed them to circle up around a concrete slab and he noticed...sidewalk chalk. Oh great! Artistic stuffs Ian was the world's WORST artist. So, it seemed like he would fail this class. Unless of course they made a hopscotch track and he would crush EVERYONE! He waited to see what was next.

Tiara looked around and only saw a few students out and about on the grounds. If they were stragglers from her group then they would hurry along soon. She would just go ahead and get started, since there were many eager faces in their little outing.
She bent down to pick up a bright purple piece of chalk. "If you are unfamiliar with this particular muggle art object, these sticks are called sidewalk chalk." Oh, how she had loved drawing with chalk as a small child! "You can use it to write," she bent down, "on concrete," and drew a circle. "I procured these sets for you on a recent trip into Inverness from a muggle toy store. You will use them today to demonstrate your learning. Still have your notes, I trust?" She had asked them to bring their parchments along with them. "If not, a simple Summoning Charm should remedy the mistake." Suddenly a mental picture of 20 pieces of parchment soaring through the front doors leaped into her mind.
"Your task is to pick one of the master numbers: 11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88, or 99. Based on the descriptions of the master you chose, I would like you to draw me a pictorial representation of the number. You could include people, objects, colors, or symbols you think exhibit those traits - or something else! This is a very open exercise." That would be freeing to some and torture for others.
"So hop to it! Never fear, it washes out of clothing in a trice. The bell to end the period will ring in.." She checked her watch. "About thirty minutes."

You need a minimum of three RP posts if you want full credit. I will leave the thread open through the beginning of next week, probably Monday evening EST. I got the majority of the information for this lesson from here and here, which would give lots more detail for your ideas. Further instructions on what to turn in and how to do it will be posted on your common room notice boards and the Arithmancy Announcements thread when this thread closes. Tiara will be around watching if you have questions, but also feel free to PM me! Have fun, budding artists!

Chalk?
Curiously Ariel watched as the Professor made an object on the grey thing. Huh. Human things were so interesting, and she couldn't wait to play with this chalk stuff. Would they be drawing anything they wanted? Because Ariel wanted to make a picture of her and Prince Eric. Eagerly she waited her turn and...
...She had no idea what was going on.
Where was she? What was happening? Why was Professor Tanner there? Lux liked the woman, but she was sooo confused because there was no Flying class and she didn't even fly anyhow. "Professor, what's going on?" And why was there sidewalk chalk?

Something about her tone of voice... Was she still in fairy tale mode, or had she come out of it now? Tiara decided to take a chance on her being back to her normal self. "We're starting the activity, Miss Carrington." Fingers crossed she got a normal answer.

........
Activity?
Lux stared at the Professor for a moment before what the woman was saying sunk in. Letting out a gasp, she put her hand to her mouth. "I missed everything... I - I don't know what's going on." She was starting to panic because she had no idea how she even got there and she didn't know what she was supposed to DO. She couldn't remember anything that had happened recently.
Oooohhhh... interesting, they got to DRAW stuff. Very exciting and out of the ordinary for a class activity and she couldn't WAIT to start, so as soon as they got their instructions, Soph skimmed the list of master numbers and their meanings to pick one that seemed like it would be most fun to draw -
Forty-four. Absolutely the best one to choose.
"I'm picking forty-four," she told Zander with another poke to his side, grinning away. "'Master of the Material,' it says. Should be super easy. Y'can draw glamorous stuff with me if you want." Or he could pick his own number and have less fun. His choice.
She had already moved to pick up a bunch of sidewalk chalk, then returned to their area to section off HER space in a big square shape on the pavement. With a blue piece of chalk, she wrote Sophie Brown in the left corner so everyone knew that was HER work space, then she put the number '44' in the right corner so they knew what she was illustrating. Then, without giving it much thought, she started off drawing the brown, black, and yellow chalk in tiny circles to illustrate a knut, sickle, and galleon respectively, using the black extra lightly to try to make it grey on the pavement. Money was the essential thing to draw first, wasn't it? Hehe. She drew lots more galleons than knuts or sickles to illustrate WEALTH in its simplest form, then drew a little stick-figure guy under it with its arms raised up to the money as if it was HOLDING all of it - a wealthy person with the master number of forty-four. Totally clever of her.

Chalk? That's what it was called? At least she was right in thinking it was for drawing. She listened to the Professor's instructions and decided to hop to it. Walking over to where all the chalk was arranged, she stood there a while trying to decide what colour to choose. Maybe she could choose two, but that might be getting a bit greedy, so she reached down and chose a green piece of chalk. On second thought, no, there was probably enough to go around. She'd put it back if not. She picked up a blue one and a purple one as well. It felt odd in her hand, her non-gloved hand of course, and she walked over to where she was sitting previously.
She was glad she had packed her notes up and had them with her. She certainly didn't know a summoning charm and was too embarrassed to ask the Professor to help her. She hand't decided which number to choose. She had volunteered number 99 in class, but she didn't want to use that number. Instead, she read quickly through the numbers and meanings and decided to use number eleven, because it reminded her of her Grandpapi.

Zander smiled as he saw Sophie Brown walking towards him, though he couldn't help but wonder why she didn't automatically go for her 'Tobes' like she normally did. See, he would never actually admit this to her, but Zander actually missed the girl. Even missed how she poke at him with her jokes all the-- Speaking of pokes.... The Gryffindor playfully clutched onto his side pretending as if it hurt, but the smiled nevertheless. "Hi, Sophie," he smiled as he looked back at the Professor for an explanation of this chalk thing. He did not feeling like doing the reduction thing today.
And come to think of it, Sophie was a Ravenclaw so maybe she could do the calculations part and Zander could do the writing part like interpretations or something. Like a trade off. Seemed fair, right?
BUT WAIT, so they really weren't doing reductions?!! HOW COME TANNER DIDN'T TEACH THE SUBJECT ALL THE TIME!! Okay, okay back to the point. Sophie was poking again. The Gryffindor nodded at the idea of calibration because firstly yes and secondly yes. Arithmancy was never really his thing and drawing... Well they'd figure that one out soon enough. Anyways. He looked down at his notes and by the time he looked back up, Sophie had already begun doing her thing. Except wait a minute. Taking what he thought was a red piece of chalk- which turned out to look more pink- he crawled over to the girl's other side and scribbled in a And Zander Adair Also, right below her name.
Then he looked over to her and grinned, before noticing the rest of her drawings and nodding a little bit. "I'm going to draw some muggle coins on this side because you know... Wealth is like a universal thing?" Right? Arithmancy?... Ahem. But there was also another side to the number 44 according to his book. "How do you wanna show the emotionally rich side?" he asked casually as he began drawing a 5 pence, 10 pence, and 1 pound onto the concrete with different colored chalk. "Uh, like a treasure chest filled with a bunch of faces that have different emotions???" Or was that stupid? Yeah.

She was doing a really good drawing her wizarding currency, she knew she was, and she was VERY relieved that Zander had joined her, even though she wasn't going to tell him that. She didn't want to give away any hints at how much she really liked his friendship, did she? Hehehe. His Muggle currency was good, though, and she gave him a nod of approval. "Good call, Cool King of the Nerds," she jabbed affectionately, having not forgotten their conversation last term where he rightfully accepted his role as such.
His interpretation of emotionally rich was... creative, to say the least, and though it wasn't the route Sophie would have gone with it, she liked it. "That's smart. We can do that, too. Since it's your idea, you can draw that one, if y'want." She gave him a thumbs up of genuine approval. "And... maybe we need a HEART to demonstrate emotions, and FEELING emotionally rich, too, since we're probably gonna want more than one example of both kinds of wealth, yeah?" She could do that, and without waiting for his approval, she took the red chalk and drew a heart in her part of the square, shading it in fully with the red, then switched to a yellow one and drew squiggly lines emitting from around the heart as if the heart was shining because it was a HAPPY heart, like a ray of sunshine and a heart together in one.
...And then she took the black chalk and drew a simple smiley face on the heart. There. That was HER interpretation of emotionally wealthy.
"This isn't a competition, I don't think, but we're gonna win this." TEAM AWESOME.

Something artistic! Samantha was liking this. She thought of which Master Number she was going to draw as she collected some chalk of various colours. She found a vacant piece of pavement and began to draw. Samantha wrote "33" in the centre in blue chalk and began to draw a border of little red hearts around the numeral.
"I've selected the Master Number 33. The hearts represent the fact that people who have this numerological profile are emotionally sensitive,"
Samantha bit her lip in concentration as she decided what to draw next.

Zeke had listened, so he DID have his notes with him... and he was pretty sure he'd fail at summoning it from the classroom if he had been unfortunate enough to leave them behind. But alas, this was a lesson he could really get behind. It was all interpretive and imaginative, two things he thought he was rather good at. There were no calculations involved or anything like that, so... EASY LESSON YAY!
Checking over his list, Zeke struggled to make up his mind on WHICH to choose to portray using chalk. It was HARD!!!!... In the end, he closed his eyes and let his unguided finger find a spot on the page. Upon opening his eyes, he decided his finger was more on 55 than it was 66, and so the lucky winning master number was 55!
Master of New Thought and Freedom!
Sounded legit, and it was pretty awesome.
Instinctively, his hand flew to a yellow chalk stick, and the FIRST image he chose to draw on his patch of pavement, was a light bulb! Light bulbs were the things that were often used to symbolise new ideas, right? Right? So... it was legit.
Kneeling comfortably, Zeke worked away on his chalk art by tracing the outline of a circle with a little rectangly bit at the bottom, shading it in roughly, and then putting the shine!sparks around it to signify that it's switched on.
