Default History of Magic Lesson One

As you walk into the History of Magic classroom, you might first notice the five rectangular objects covered with sheets and propped up along the front wall. They are covered more for the benefit of the objects underneath, from which quiet murmurs can be heard occasionally, rather than for any kind of surprise or secrecy.

Professor Finch is found leaning casually against his desk at the front of the room, waiting for students to arrive as he greets each one. "Good morning.. please take your seat at the table marked with your name." He gestures to the multiple tables with four chairs each that fill the room instead of traditional desks. There are four nametags at each table, already filled out with names of the students enrolled in this class, in a random order. Hopefully this will help him retain the names that he still has trouble remembering at times, though he will know if you are sitting at the incorrect name.

Also located at the center of each table is a small caddy with several colors of markers, paint pens, glitter glue, and a handful of stickers. "Feel free to embellish your nametags if you'd like while we wait for everyone to arrive." Or not, it didn't matter to him. But he knew that people needed to express themselves in their own individual way at times, and it was often good to occupy young people while there downtime.

OOC- Come on in and take a seat! The names are in random order so it is up to you at which table your character's name is located, but it's likely that they aren't sitting next to their best friend. But as Professor Finch would say - think of this as broadening your horizons and giving you the opportunity of getting to know someone new! =)

Kitty continued to decorate her nametag with the items Professor Finch had so generously allowed them to use. She decorated the first half of every letter of her name with pink marker, and the second half with black marker. Pink because of Valentine, and black because she was Gothic.

"Hey Garreth!"She waved at her new friend as Garreth went by her table to go sit somewhere else. Who was she sitting next to anyway? Kitty bent down to examine the nametags of her fellow students.

Yawn.

Ava didn't really looking forward for this class. History of Magic wasn't her thing and even though they had a new Professor (that according to some people that he was as handsome as a Prince), it didn't change her opinion about this lesson.

But at least that she's not late. "Hello, Professor." She greeted that man. Well, he did have a nice face. But since she didn't know anything about Prince fairy tale, so she didn't know if it's true that he's that handsome. She looked around and found her name tag... Oh, look. She was in the same table as Davie, a Ravenclaw girl who stole two balls from last Astronomy class and Colt... Yeah, she still remembered him, the one who defeated her in a duel last term. "Hi, Davie!" The young lioness greeted the guy. "Hi there." She smiled to the rest of them.

Near the back.

She sat down and clasped her hands together and her purple eyes looked around.. She wondered who was going to be sitting with her?
It has been ten minutes since Jessie entered the class and she wasn't found her seat yet.

She began to walked closer to the last desk with available seat.

ThankP Merlin There it was.Her nametag. Finally she found it.

Jeslyn K. C.

In the desk near the back.

Not bad.

But then she realized that there was another students occupied the other seat already.

the lioness smiled shyly toward them before plopped down to the seat
"Hi, I'm Jessie.Nice to meet you."

Tia was not late; she was simply on time and everyone else was simply early. Taking one look at the professor, Tia resolved that this year of History of Magic would be far from boring. Except for ... what?!? He assigned their seats? who does this? What was this - kindergarten? So much for sitting in the front row and center to stare at the handsome professor all day and doodle hearts around his name.

Beautiful day today, eh?" he quickly made his way towards the rest of the class only to have the smile wiped off his face completely as he discovered the seating arrangements. Uh-oh! His name was on one of these nametags, and he had to actually search for it? Yikes. Now begins the awkward shuffling around the room trying to spot a "Garreth Kenway" on one of the pieces of paper. He scanned the tags he could see from where he stood and upon coming to terms with the fact that his name was on none of them, he began the search. His first stop was over at Esme's table. She was probably the one person he'd spoken to the most out of everyone in the room - not that that was saying much - and he sort of hoped he'd be sitting with her, but alas, his name wasn't there. He gave her an exaggerated frown and moved over to Kitty's table. Nope. No "Garreth" there either.

He searched hard and found none. He searched harder and found noner.

Aha! There it was! ... At an empty table. Fantastic. Well, at least he'd found his seat. Now the lesson could begin! Well, maybe after at least half the class had arrived. Was it too soon to start asking questions? Yeah, probably. He'd just have to shut up and doodle on his nametag for now. Dum dee dum. Could he ask questions now? No, probably not. How about now? No? How about now? Now?

Searching for her name by the empty seats, Tia thought desperately that maybe, just maybe, he had simply forgotten her. But not the case. Where was her name? At long last she found it at a table in the way back with only one student thus far sitting at the table. A lad she recognized as being a newly sorted eaglet from the feast. Perhaps this was on purpose; sticking her with a first year to help him follow along AND away from staring distance from himself. With a sigh, Tia took the seat behind her name tag, "TiaMarie Mancini" and just for the sake of it, added "Head Girl" underneath it.

"Hi, you're Garreth, right?"
Tia said, greeting her tablemate. "Don't think I've officially gotten to welcoming you to Ravenclaw, so ... welcome."

Shame.

"Hey!" she said as Olivia joined her. "How are you?" Garreth made his way over and she waved at him, but it looked like he was to be seated somewhere else. Oh well. She would get to know him better outside of class, she was sure!
Esme seemed intent on her nametag but thankfully responded to her greeting. "I'm good, what about you?" The firstie being nice and returning the inquiry on the older girl. Olivia briefly followed her gaze and wave to someone that turned out to be a fellow eagle first year but he didn't appear to be at their table so slid on by. Turning back to the table, she looked at the nametags remaining.

Just who were they?

"I wonder what kind of topic we'll be having today?" she mused aloud, her eyes flicking once more to the covered items as she finished up her own nametag. Though she supposed they would find out soon enough.

Ansley was rather looking forward to this class, no matter how large it would likely be with all the years together in one classroom. It was a subject he was rather fond of and he felt it a creative way to learn about history. He just wondered how many students had actually employed this method of learning already. He figured he'd find out soon enough anyway.

He remained at the front of the room as students walked in, returning greetings with many hellos, good mornings, and nods until he lost count. He was always thankful for the reminder in name as a few had offered, as he still was trying to remember without having seeing it mentally attached to the face. It would come to him soon though. Names, and as many new ones as he had to remember this year, often took time. But at least he had the general idea. And he did have to chuckle being called the train teacher, wondering how long that moniker would stick with him.

Professor Finch watched with vague interest, casually walking through the rows of tables, as some students chose to alter their nametags and others did not. It did not matter to him in the least if they chose to take advantage of the time that way or not, but he felt it did say something about the student and he kept all of that in mind. Interesting.

Finch glanced at Rooney as he inquired about the seats. "They are your seats for now, but we'll probably change them up at some point during the term at least once." He liked a little change once in a while or things got too boring. But he liked the way things were for now, unless he saw need to switch someone's seat. And that still remained to be seen.

Finch looked up at the sound of his name being called out across the room. "And you as well," he said, moving a little closer to Olivia's table. "But we don't shout across the room in this class. Conversational voices only please." If something louder was needed, they'd likely move outside, but there were too many students in this class for the noise level to be out of control.

Bradson walked into the classroom and looked around at all of the other students. This was a history class. About magic. Okay, he really was in the right place. The first year still didn't know what his favorite class was so far but he really did like charms the most. HE HAS TO SAY GOOD MORNING???? Yeah? That's what everyone else was saying. "Good morning Professor." What time of day was it anyway? He was too awake for it to be morning. "I think it's morning." Bradson looked over at Professor Finch and nodded before walking off and finding his best friend.

The first year looked around more before trying to look for a seat. He was NOT going best friendless for another class. He wasn't going to stand for it one bit. "KAAAAAAAT! WHERE IS MY KAT!" Kat with a "k" not a "c". He wasn't looking for an animal, he was the looking for his best friend. People better not even think about calling her an animal or else they would have him to speak to about and let's just say no speaking would be involved.
I think it's morning? Clearly not a Ravenclaw. "I can tell you with complete certainty that it currently is morning," he told the child with a somewhat amused expression. Whether is was good or not was a matter of opinion though.

He then stared after him incredulously as the boy started wandering around the room. Had he ever been inside a classroom before? "Young man," he called after him sternly. "There is no shouting in this classroom. Put your outside voice away, it's not needed today." He also did not need a headache before class even started.

After a moment of regarding those in the classroom, Daxton went ahead and snagged the first free seat that was closest to the door, not even seeking out his own name in the classroom. Barely glancing at the name of whomever's seat he had stolen, Daxton picked up a black marker from the middle of the table and crossed it out, making it entirely unreadable. With the hint of a frown on his face, Daxton looked up and right at the professor, turning the marker over and over in his hands and saying nothing.
Ansley knew who this student was. He also knew that he was sitting in the incorrect seat. And that wouldn't bother him so much other than the fact that it seemed to be a deliberate attempt at disregarding his instruction as shown by the crossed out name on his desk.

He simply walked over to him so as not to draw too much attention and pointed at the table just behind the one where he was sitting. "Mr. Prince, you seat happens to be there. My instructions were to sit in the seat I assigned you... Please take the correct seat or express to me why you need to select this different seat." And he didn't care if that was a verbal or written expression. If there was a specific problem, he could be flexible about the arrangement to a degree. And he could provide accommodation as needed. But accommodation didn't mean simply disregard instruction and do whatever you wanted.

OOC - We will start class very soon. I have a family emergency, but I should hopefully be back shortly. Post more if you want. Or not. Up to you. =)

Davie gave pause for a moment as he spied something near the front covered by a sheet... something murmuring quietly... portraits, maybe? Hmm. And now he had to find his seat.

Davie wandered around quietly, looking for his nametag, and finally finding it over by the window. Well he liked that. Davie smiled at the older Slytherin boy who had just sat down, recognizing him from Dueling Club, and then he sat himself down to decorate his own name tag. He decided to emphasize his name with a few geometric lines in various shades of blue. Always blue.

When Colt sat down at his table alone, he realized not for long it will be filled up. He honestly had no idea who he was gonna be sitting with. When he was doodling, he noticed someone sat down. He looked up and saw this kid that looked familiar. Oh right....it was....Davie from dueling club. He nodded to the dude in response to his smile. "Sup dude?" he asked.

When he shortly finished asking Davie how he was doing, he saw someone familiar come to his table. He nodded and smiled at Hady. He remembered meeting her at Diagon Alley. "Hey Hady. Scarlett didn't think she'd really enjoy History of Magic, but with a professor who looked THAT YUMMY, maybe it wouldn't be so bad. She flashed him a big smile and waved in greeting. "Hello Professor!" she said happily. Hehe. Yes, even if all she had to do was stare at him, she certainly would not mind this class THAT much.

They had assigned seats? That was new, but it was a new opportunity to make friends too! And there was GLITTER GLUE! Ok, this class was officially awesome. She found her nametag, which was at a table that was empty right now. Well that stunk. Hopefully the rest of her table mates would show up soon!

That Ravenclaw girl remembered her. "Oh yeah, that's very fun." And also Gryffindor won, fair and square. No need to steal two balls in one time like she had done. But well, she didn't need to bring it up again, right? "I don't think we've met officially. Ava Burton, second year." The young lioness grabbed her hand and shook it... Wait, there's an electric shock bell on her own hand. Hehehe...

She turned back to Colt. She was still a little bit mad to herself that she couldn't defeat this guy on the dueling last term and still thought that Professor Dakest did make a mistake to place him on the younger group. Well, it's already happened and now it's time to move on. "Yeah, that's my name." How could you forget your opponent's name, dude? "Of course I am! I'm totally looking forward for it!" She'd fallen for dueling since she joined the club last year. It's like she had found something lost for a loooooooong time.

The young lioness stared at the table.... GLITTER GLUE? SERIOUSLY? Weren't they in kindergarten class anymore?

Oh my summer was good. It was the same old same old. Just visited some family ya know." He always had tons of fun visiting his cousins. "How was yours? Did you enjoy being in Diagon Alley?"

Colt then saw another girl join their group. Well I guess it had to be even with two boys and two girls. He nodded to the girl and tried to remember her name. He knew that he beat her in dueling club. "Hello Ava is it?" he asked jogging his memory. "You going to do the dueling club this year?" he asked.

Well so far so good. Colt...Winchester, right, that was his last name. Davie totally hadn't had to peek at his nametag to remember that. "Hey, how's it going," he replied confidently. "Nice nametag." See, Davie could play nice with people. He finished his own nametag by now and was just starting to put back his assortment of blue markers when lo and behold.... the closest thing he had to an enemy (that hag aside) sat down.

Well well well. Was the first year know-nothing not even going to greet him? Was that how things should go? Hmmph. Two could play at this game, Duncebringer. David coolly reached into his bag and got out his notes parchment and accessories, including a very fancy green quill which he was training to take down his every word. It didn't always have the best accuracy, no, but it DID make the best remarks. David was curious to see what it would write about Haddie, and so with a pointed glance across the table at her, he stuck his nose up in the air at her and then let the quick quotes quill get to work on its own.

In the meantime, Ava had joined their table, and David was relieved to see a friendly face from his year. A Gryffindor face, too, so it was safe to say that their table had some diversity. "Hi Ava! How are you?!" She was probably looking forward to Dueling Club, but Colt had just asked her that and she'd said yeah, so Davie would have to think of something else to ask.

He glanced around the room to see where the rest of his friends were and felt a pang of jealousy for not lucking out and getting to sit with Rooney, Char, and Blaise. He would have made the perfect fourth person for that table. Bummer. Still, at least this group had three quality smart kids, and She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named was NOT one of them!

It was rather irritating, but then she hadn’t really thought that the Grey Lady would stay teaching for long anyhow. That meant she was only going to compare the new professor with Professor Glendower, since she’d actually enjoyed her lessons for the most part. Even if her first memory was arguing with the head girl over whether or not fairy tale characters were real. It was still memorable, and it didn’t involve her getting hurt or nearly tossed into a swamp. That made it a good memory, as far as Hogwarts was concerned.

“Good morning Professor,” she said, walking into the classroom and giving the man a nod, which also worked as a subtle way of trying to get a full idea of him. What he might be like, but then his announcement worked just as well for that. Assigned seating. With her luck, she’d probably be sat with Frankie, or someone else she’d feel more like arguing with than anything else. She had to deal with it, though, now that she was here. Turning, she looked for the seat with her nametag on, then made her way over and sat down. So far so good, but she wasn’t holding her breath.

Now THIS was a subject Matt was not looking forward to. History of Magic, how BORING did that sound? Very boring. They'd probably be sitting there with their faces in a book or they'd have to listen to a really old person talk to them in their really old boring voice.

Matt pretty much dragged himself to the classroom, only because he had to. He did perk up, though, when he saw the tables and lots of chairs and a classroom looking like something he wasn't really expecting to see. And what were those things on the wall??? Curious Matt was suddenly very curious about this lesson and after saying hi to the professor, he started to look for his name tag.

"Aha!" He exclaimed, taking a seat at once. He grinned at the Slyhterin girl who was sitting there but before starting a proper conversation, he had something more important to do, and he had to do it QUICKLY.

Grabbing a red marker, he crossed off his surname and wrote SOLO over it. There. That's what people should call him. After he placed his name tag thingy back on its place, he looked up at the girl again. "What do you reckon those things are??" He asked her with big eyes, gesturing towards the five things propped up on the wall.

This may not have been a top priority on Hady's list of lessons she really liked but here she was anyhow. Manly because she took every class without question and was always determined to do her absolute best in it. Which is why she was where she was this morning silently slipping through the doorway and into the History of Magic room, her long brunette hair tumbling down her back and around her face, bag slung casually over her shoulder.

The way the desks were grouped had her a little 'perplexed' to say the least but she could easily handle it. Maybe. It all would come down to whom she ended up sat with. Hopefully no one she truly disliked. Would it be to late to pray that Frankie would be at her table if not beside her?

Slowly glancing at each group of tables she read the names there before finding her own. "Morning Professor Finch," she greeted warmly before slipping down into her seat and setting her bag down at her feet. All the materials laid out on the table caught her eye and she instantly selected a green and silver marker alternating the colors as she traced over her name that was already written down for her. With that done she picked out some bright colors and in two opposites corners of the name tag draw flowers (tiger lilies) and in the other two opposite corners she drew two butterflies each. A tad of glitter for some added sparkle and she was done!

Now all she could do was wait and see whom she was supposed to be sat with for the lesson.

They had assigned seats? That was new, but it was a new opportunity to make friends too! And there was GLITTER GLUE! Ok, this class was officially awesome. She found her nametag, which was at a table that was empty right now. Well that stunk. Hopefully the rest of her table mates would show up soon!

Ailsa followed Haddie and company into the History of Magic classroom only to be told that the professor had set up assigned seats for them. She snickered a little as Haddie had to sit with Davie; Ailsa had heard her cousin complain about that boy. Of course, she didn't see what the problem with him was. He'd seemed quite nice when she'd spoken with him.

"Good morning professor," she smiled up at him politely before heading off to find her seat, which turned out to be at a mostly empty table. So far the only other person there was a brunette girl (Scarlett) about her age who seemed almost as excited about the glitter as she was about the professor, which caused Ailsa to giggle a little as she sat down.

"Hi, I'm Ailsa. Looks like we're working together." Ailsa extended a hand to the girl with a friendly smile, leaving her own nametag unaltered; after all, it was performing its function just fine so far.

A jolt went through Haddie's hand, and she pulled it away from Ava in shock. She waved the sensation and slight tinge of pain out of her hand, but she was smiling, as if she enjoyed it, even if she'd been the victim. "Haddie Denaker. That was great! Now do it to the Dodo bird's face." She pointed at Davie with her thumb. She turned and explained very slowly to Davie, "That's an extinct species of non-magical bird that was known for being rather stupid." Like the boy was. Especially, it seemed, to anything non-magical. He might have been sorted into Ravenclaw, but he was no eagle. Davie Thickbridge was a dodo bird.

She ignored the looks he had been giving her, and returned to decorating her name tag. "My summer was alright," she told Colt. "Rachel and I hung out a lot. Do you know Rachel? She's..." Haddie glanced over to Rachel's table and gestured to her best friend, "over there. Diagon alley was wonderful, of course." She focused on her name tag for bit, then continued. "That's cool you got to spend time with family. I've only now reconnected with my cousin after we ran into each other on the Hogwarts Express."

So much for sitting in the front row and center to stare at the handsome professor all day and doodle hearts around his name.

"Hi, you're Garreth, right?" Tia said, greeting her tablemate. "Don't think I've officially gotten to welcoming you to Ravenclaw, so ... welcome."
With all the students who had arrived after he'd found his seat, Garreth had expected his table to fill up rather quickly. He didn't know who'd be sitting with him, as the nametags were angled in such a way that he couldn't see them from his seat. Even if he could read them, he probably wouldn't have recognized the names on them anyway. At this point, he half expected to just be alone for the whole lesson, but then someone came to his rescue! It was one of the prefects! How fitting. The first year was understandably nervous about having to sit with strangers and getting to know new people, but knowing he'd be sitting with a prefect made him feel a lot better.

"Yes, I'm Garreth. Thank you. I always wanted to be in Ravenclaw." he smiled anxiously at the older girl. What's your name?" the boy wasn't sure how to talk to older kids, but he supposed it was a safe bet to go with asking their name to begin with.

Rula had decided she would probably enjoy History of Magic this year because this professor was VERY pretty. Hehe. This class and DADA were awesome for having pretty professors. And fortunately she was getting used to it, so she didn't awkwardly stare or anything this time.

"Hi, Professor," she greeted, smiling shyly, before she moved on through the room to find her nametag. Where oh where could it be?

Oh, there it was! At the same table as this girl with the really dark hair.

"Hi!" Rula greeted her too, taking the seat beside her. And now to start doodling on her name tag too, yes?

Ever since her days in Romania Kitty had always been very self aware, and right now she was starting to feel awkward sitting all by herself. Everyone else had already found at least one partner, but not her. Of course it would have been much worse if their seats hadn't been assigned, because then that would mean that no one wanted to sit with her.

But just then a fellow third year student said hi and sat down next to her. Yes! "Hi I'm Kitty!" Kitty smiled at her in relief, feeling a lot better now that she wasn't alone.

Then she turned back to finishing her own pink and black nametag.

Allowing time for a few more stragglers to come in, Ansley offered a few more hellos and good mornings in return greeting, then glanced up at the clock. Seemed to be just about time to begin class, although there appeared to still be a few empty seats. Still though.. what a full room.

"Good morning, class!" he greeted them brightly, slowly walking past the tables to look at each one of them. "Personal conversations should now come to an end as it is now time for this lesson to begin." He certainly didn't mind some talking between classmates, but once class started he expected them all to be focused. "If you did not already know, I am your teacher, Professor Ansley Finch, and this is History of Magic." Everyone in the right place? Good.

"History - or herstory, whichever the case may be - is, as I'm sure you all know, the study of past events. In its most basic sense, it's the retelling of stories,"
he began, though he'd expect them to at least figure this already. "Of course, there are many, many stories throughout history - everyone has a story to tell - but which ones get told, which ones are remembered, and why?"

There were certainly reasons to be theorized, but he let that rhetorical question sit for a moment before he continued. "Often, historical stories are dependent on who was there to witness the events. It's best to get accounts from more than one person so as to get the most accurate story. In the past, stories were sometimes handed down for years before they were written down, and that can affect the accuracy too, especially as things get forgotten or even changed." Luckily record-keeping was better in recent times, though people's perspectives still gave way to bias at times.

"This year, I'd like us to explore past events as well as more recent ones, and major events as well as lesser-known ones. Even though I am your teacher, clearly I don't know everything."
And he had no issue in admitting that. Ansley knew plenty, but students didn't expect him or anyone else here to be omniscient, did they? It would be impossible for him to know every story in the history of wizardkind. "And while your textbook as well as many of the books located in the library are great resources for learning history, even they don't hold every story as there are always new ones to explore."

"Many of what we will be learning this term will come from your textbook, but today we will be doing something a little differently. Another way to learn about history is to talk to people who have been a part of it." And this castle had a great resource for that. He wondered how many of them utilized it. "While they are not the actual people who have lived, the magical portraits found all over the castle are paintings of many people who have been a part of history. They even have some of the thoughts and memories of those people.."

Ansley knew that once he started talking about them, the portraits under his sheets would murmur even louder. "Almost time," he mumbled as his eyes lifted towards that end of the room. Turning back to his class, he addressed them once more. "How many of you have held a conversation with a magical portrait to find out their story?" He looked around the room, holding some gazes for a moment before moving on.

"Even if it's minimal, I want each of you to talk about an interaction you've had with a portrait either at Hogwarts, or anywhere else. Name, if you know it, and anything they told you.. Let's go around the room, starting here." He gestured to one end of the room. At the very least, some of the portraits held secret passwords, but he hoped that most of them had more than that to offer.

Not everybody in the room talked to the portraits. At least not at length. Chloe had been harassed by portraits before-- they usually told her to get her hair out of her eyes-- but she wouldn't constitute that as them having a conversation. A conversation was a two way street and she mostly ignored them.

But they were going around the room. She hated when professors put students on the spot like this.

Chloe tucked some rogue blonde hair behind her ear and swung at an answer. Brief but he got one, "I don't talk to them much. But some of the Knights who like to travel around from portrait to portrait like to yell things at students and me. Like walk faster, make sure you get to class, for Narnia." Dumb things like that.

Oliver was anxiously awaiting the arrival of some more tablemates. Come on, anyone. There were two more names on the table, and it had not even occurred to him to see whose names were on them. But before he even got the chance, there were some new arrivals. The first was Charlotte Kettleburn. Alright. Fine. Not scary. And BLAISE! The most perfect addition to the table ever? One of his best friends ever? Perfect. Olly grinned, but before he got the chance to greet them, the professor started the lesson.

Portraits? Olly didn't make a habit of talking to portraits. He generally preferred to talk to real people. But he did recall a few conversations from the previous year, when he had been exploring random places in the castle. He didn't talk to them about their lives though. Why would he do that? That sounded boring. He raised his hand.

"I talked to a knight last year? I don't remember his name, but he talked about slaying dragons and stuff." That probably wasn't very useful, but he didn't like to say nothing. So. You're welcome.

Oh joy! The FIRST question the professor asked, and Garreth already had a story to tell! Perhaps it would be best if he kept it as short and concise as possible, but any way you sliced it, the most exciting tale of portrait interaction that Garreth had to tell was a long one. How to keep it short? Hmm...

Either way, he only had a few short moments to think on his answer before it was his turn. The boy beamed enthusiastically up at Professor Finch and, forgetting his social anxiety for a moment, began to speak: "I haven't had much opportunity to speak with any of the portraits here at the castle, Professor, but I did learn a story from a portrait back home in Grimsby." he did hope he wasn't already boring everyone, including the professor. "In the library at home, they have a portrait of Gifford Ollerton, the famous Giant-Slayer! I used to spend a lot of time at the library and spoke to Gifford on a number of occasions. He once told me of how he saved Upper Barnton from Hengist the Giant, who was terrorizing the town!" the boy beamed with enthusiasm, and he may not have been fully aware that he was beginning to ramble on. "I must say, his version of the story is a lot more interesting than anything I've read in the history books!"

Perhaps the story of Gifford Ollerton and his Giant-slaying adventures wasn't making any headlines in the storybooks that Garreth had read, but at least they were mentioned, and that was the most important thing. Garreth would hate to have been a famous giant slayer and then be ignored by the history books! "Not that the history books are boring or anything..." he was quick to add.

Default Mentions Haddie too...
Professor Pink | Mrs. Bruce Wayne | I'm on a Goat | Glitterpuff | Dumbledore's Defense Squad | BHB

Wow, mentioning the dodo and comparing it to him? Haddie really didn't know anything, did she. If she DID know things, especially things about MAGIC, then she'd be aware that what Muggles called the 'dodo' was actually a magical bird called the Diricawl. So who was the stupid one now? The girl who STILL didn't know anything about magic, or the one who knew enough to sit there and feel smug about how stupid that insult had been?

But David wasn't going to acknowledge her ignorance right now. The professor was talking, and this subject was easily one of his best. In fact, his father had taught this subject, so Haddie could just... could just.... actually, okay, David DID need to acknowledge her. Her beef with him was one thing, but bringing the others into it? That was a no no. And he knew that the longer he sat here and let her think she was right, the more this dumb slight was going to bother him.

So as the professor introduced himself (and David was listening, he was), the second-year casually pushed his parchment over to where she could see it:

Quote:
The dodo is only extinct to ignorant Muggles like yourself.
Now then, the professor had asked a question about encountering magical portraits, and Davie certainly had a lot to say about those, having been around them his entire life. Plus he had correctly guessed the topic of today's lesson, and he liked feeling smug about that. The first portrait encounter to pop to mind, however, was from the end of his first year here.

"Last year, I cast obscuro, the blindfolding spell, on about three of the portaits in the Headmaster's office," he admitted fearlessly. Who was the dodo now, huh Haddie? Had she even heard of that spell? No doubt she was not devoted enough to learn it as a mere firstie, as he had done.

Davie glanced over at his BFF Char and grinned, adding, "One of those portraits was my mum's. Headmistress Anastasia Truebridge. She can be kind of... intense, so the blindfold was for her portrait's protection." And his. And their combined sanity and safety. "The others I blindfolded were the portraits of Hogwarts Governor Cassandra Rae and former Headmaster Tate. None of them really said anything other than small exclamations of surprise, but that was because the blindfolds worked perfectly well. No paint was hurt in the blindfolding or anything." At least, they'd all looked fine on his visit there at the start of term. So what was the harm in admitting this now? Nothing. It was surely too late to throw Davie into detention for the small sneaking-in of Botros' office...

But uh, none of the portraits Professor Finch had brought were from Moxley's office, were they? Somebody please tell him they were home-painted portraits and not Hogwarts ones.... please.... please don't be mum's portrait....

Azura smiled over at Austin, Rachel and Jessie, she had been unable to say anything to them before class started, but she gave them all a wave, before listening to what the teacher had to say.

It was fascinating.. History. It really was, and this new teacher seemed to make it a bit better than normal.

Though at his question.. had she ever talked to a Talking Portrait? She thought for a moment and could only think of the knights that raced from portrait to portrait! The Ravenclaw's didn't have a picture that guarded their common room. She bit her lip a little.. before folding her hands in her lap and when it came to be her turn she just shook her head.. "I've never actually really talked to one, just the knights, like some of the other kids have mentioned." She said softly

His name was Finch. Train teacher was a bird!!! Secret bird. Jaemin carefully filed this in his memory and gave the Gryffindor girl sitting with him a smile and a little wave. He would have said something, but train teacher had started in about portraits and Jaemin knew better. He didn't wanma make him mad or anything, right?!

They were talking about conversations with the paintings? The little boy frowned a bit. Were they supposed to talk to them? He had avoided them so far, because they had always unnerved him a bit. His dad had taken him to a few places with them, and the way they watched him made him feel like they were gonna reach out and pull him into the picture with them. Jaemin was not sure he would be nearly as cute in oils as he did in flesh.

"Uhm..." he wracked his brain when it came his turn to offer an example. "There was a little girl in a blue dress who talked to me when I was lost before..."

She had looked like a doll. A painted doll. Big eyes and stuff. Very creepy. He had thanked her for her directions and immediately taken off. He wasn't even sure what floor she had been on, much less who she was.
